SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Definition

Sustainable development is a

way for people to use

resources without running

them out. The term is defined

as development with

sustainability that "meets the

needs of the present without

compromising the ability of

future generations to meet

their own needs”.

Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro

United Nations Conference on "Environment and

Development" commonly called the Earth Summit was held

from 3 - 14 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The

Conference was attended by representatives of 172 countries.

The conference was organized in the 20th anniversary of the

first United Nations conference on the problems of the

environment, held in Stockholm in 1972.

The results of Rio de Janerio Summit

Making documents including ideas to improve the

ecology in other countries for example: Agenda 21

– which has ways to keep sustainable development

in run till the end of XXI century some of them

are:

International cooperation with resources development;

Changing model of consumption;

Defending human life, ecosystems, and atmosphere.

Why is sustainable development so

important?

The effects of lack of the sustainable development can be dangerous for

our world.

If all natural resources are gone, we won’t have anything to make energy.

If we don’t help the third world countries, the environment will be

destroyed (rich companies produce goods in non-ecological way there)

Page 6: Sustainable Development, Advertising, Lighting -Poland- (Poland meeting 2014)

How to use natural resources wisely?

Be sure that the production of this resources is greater than the

consumption.

Don’t create more problems by solving only one; burning coal

produces energy, but it also adds carbon dioxide to the

greenhouse gases.

Page 7: Sustainable Development, Advertising, Lighting -Poland- (Poland meeting 2014)

We should use more types of energy

sources which are free, renewable and

sustainable, for example: solar, wind,

tidal and thermal energy. Instead of

using limited recources, like: coal, oil

and natural gases.

Page 8: Sustainable Development, Advertising, Lighting -Poland- (Poland meeting 2014)

The renewable types of energy sources could power a lot of

industries and cities, only if more money would be involved.

People shouldn’t be using new things (for example: electronics)

faster than they are produced, because then a lot of these

products are being wasted.

Average number of advertisements

Before Easter After Easter

35% of students in our school

took part in the survey.

We asked how many

advertisements they

received before and after

Easter.

What do you usually do with advertisements ?

I throw it away without reading. I read it and then i throw it away. I recycle it without reading.

I recycle it after reading. I leave it if i think it is useful.

Page 14: Sustainable Development, Advertising, Lighting -Poland- (Poland meeting 2014)

Would you like to recive advertisements ?

Yes No

Page 15: Sustainable Development, Advertising, Lighting -Poland- (Poland meeting 2014)

The Summary

We receive more advertisements before Easter. We usually

don’t care about what is written there. We don’t want to

receive these advertisements, but most people get a lot

of them.

Conclusion Now to reduce CO2 generated only by light in our school we need 40000 trees

it is 10 km2 of forest ( size of Warsaw is 519 km2)

If we changed our bulbs to eco ones the number would be reduced to 5500

trees it is 1,5 km2 of forest.

A few interesting facts about forests in Poland:

• In 2010 trees were planted on an area equal

to 7,5 thousands football pitches

• By the year 2020 30% of Poland will be

covered by forests according to a goal set in

1995

Students from our school took part in an all-Poland

competition for the best poster or movie to promote saving

energy.

Saving energy - competition

Our friend Kuba Kalemba from grade II, achieved

a distinction it this competition.
