Sustainable Development
The use of renewable and non-renewable resources in manner that satisfy our current needs but does not compromise the future availability of resources. The concept of sustainable development was originally synonymous with that of sustainability and is often still used in that way. Both term are derive from the older forestry term “sustained yield” .
Objectives by WCED for Sustainable
Development1. Reviving growth.2. Changing the quality of growth.3. Meeting the essential needs for jobs, food, water,
energy, sanitation.4. Ensuring a sustainable level of population.5. Conserving and enhancing the resource base.6. Making development more participatory.7. Merging environment and economics in decision
making.8. Re- orienting technology and managing risk.
Different about Sustainable
Development1. First, the concept of sustainable development is based
onthe idea that there is no such thing as a purely
environmentproblem. There are always political, social and economicimplication as well.
2. Second, sustainable development is based on the idea that
development is essential but that it must be a different‘quality’ of development, organized differently, that takes environment into account- conserving or
enhancing theenvironment is not the sole purpose.
What can we do as Key Players
Do’s1. Be aware of issues and impact.2. Inherently includes well-being of environment.3. Comply and go beyond minimum requirement.4. Involve public and communities in decision- making.5. Even when appears to be a more difficult process – it is a step in
right direction.
Don'ts1. Find ways to work with nature.2. Save energy, Resources.3. Step back from “business as usual”.4. Build on small successes-piloting.
Main parts of Sustainable
Development1. Environmental Sustainability.
2. Economic Sustainability.
3. Sociopolitical Sustainability.
Environmental Sustainability
A state in which the demands placed on the environment can be met without reducing its capacity to allow all people to live well, now and in the future.
Economic sustainability
The use of various strategies for employing existing resources optimally so that that a responsible and beneficial balance can be achieved over the longer term.
Sociopolitical sustainability
The ability of a community to develop processes and structures which not only meet the needs of its current members but also support the ability of future generations to maintain a healthy community.
Current Scenario• Man is blissfully ignorant and insensitive to the equation between his actions on the surroundings
• Persistent blame game between citizens and government. But what about the environment?
• Need to raise awareness regarding the detrimental effects of uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources and increasing pollution levels amongst others that compromises our present and endangers our future
1. Industrial waste problem1.No specific disposal sites for industrial waste,
nearly rivers bear the brunt.2.Industrial location in non-conforming areas
cause water and air pollution besides waste pollution.
3.No consent from local governing bodies while setting up Industries. Hence dealing with industrial solid waste becomes a menace.Solutions:-
1. Maintaining and allocating proper dumping grounds.2. Organizing timely collection, treatment and disposal
of liquid and solid waste.3. Amalgamation of civic responsibility, by the people
and waste management strategies,. By the government will help curb the problem.
2. Slum Waste ProblemsNo segregation of methods for disposal of liquid and solid wastes. For both, the disposal methods are similar.• This leads to overflow of garbage, creating an unhygienic breeding ground for micro- organisms which in turn leads to break outs of epidemics and pandemics of myriad diseases.
Solution:-• Increasing the collection cycle of garbage every week• Placing two garbage bins every 10 km with distinct tags: liquid waste and solid waste• Amalgamation of civic responsibility, by the people and waste management strategies, by the government will help curb the problem
