Oscar Wendel

Event Director

Dear Delegate,

Twelve months ago, anything painted green and blessed with the word sustainability was a safe

investment offering attractive returns. Concerns for unsustainable lifestyles were driving sales of

products, and pegging back indulgent consumerism and energy consumption. But this last year, we have

watched as the world economy has entered a freefall, and the tables have turned. Companies have begun

to fear that sustainability is little more than a burden on the bottom line.

Yet on the contrary, reality persists. We face finite resources and rapidly growing populations. The

human race has time and again proved its ingenuity, and the economic downturn should be no different

– we should take it and twist it in our favour. It is our opportunity to carry out the work imperative for a

sustainable future.

Whether by choice or necessity, we must learn to be frugal. This does not mean being poor, but being

intelligent. It means using resources wisely and doing more with less.

I am proud to be welcoming this line-up of speakers to our third Building Sustainability into the Middle East

conference. In the light of globalisation, narrow thinking has led to sustainable construction solutions

that are largely the same regardless of location. Today’s conference is a forum that will demonstrate

leadership through ideas, with experts around the world sharing their experience from having planned

and delivered both innovative and proven solutions that reduce energy consumption. Today’s discussions

will lead you to discover ways to further reduce energy consumption by adopting localised practices that

are workable for you, and will assist you in pursuing the approaches best suited for desert climates.

I am glad to welcome you all to this third Sustainability event of Construction Week.

WELCOME

Kelwyn DaviesAldar Properties PJSC

Kelwyn Davies works with ALDAR Properties PJSC, Abu Dhabi. He works within their HSE Team as Manager – Environment & Waste,

where he is developing Integrated Waste Management strategies across the company. His remit covers ALDAR offices, ALDAR

Academies, ALDAR construction sites, and completed ALDAR facilities – including residential, commercial, hospitality, leisure and

other business streams.

A Chartered Civil Engineer with over 30 Years experience he is a designated European Engineer (Eur Ing) and his experience includes

waste management facilities and strategies plus development infrastructure, highways, transportation and the Environment.

He has worked in numerous countries including Macedonia, Hungary, Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Latvia, Bulgaria, St Vincent

and The Grenadines, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, India and the United Arab Emirates.

Today, Kelwyn will contribute on Waste Management Planning – where order and efficiency in the re-use of resources, starting at

the construction phase, not only supports the environment but also delivers a benefit to ALDAR’s operation.

Ivar Krasinski, is the leader of the majority of Burt Hill’s high-rise projects, with vast experience in large mixed-use complexes.

An understanding of client branding, image and their link to the financial plans of developers forms the foundation for each of the

designs he undertakes. His studio is responsible for most of the progressive work under the Burt Hill banner, with rigorous one-

of-a-kind processes feeding into each project yielding unique results.

Interviewed in MEP Middle East Magazine, Krasinski argues that, from an integrated design scenario, “the MEP guys should be

involved in that process very early. We should have the energy modeling done from the very earliest phase, even before the building

shape or intention has been decided upon. All of these things require the involvement of MEP engineers, because they are the ones

who can run the energy models for us and help us interpret the data.

“As designers, we can do some of that, but an MEP engineer will have the extra expertise to really make the most of that process.

So it is very important to bring in MEP at the very beginning, absolutely. And especially now, if you think about the potential energy

savings on building orientation being in the order of 30%, those kinds of energy models should happen long before the client even

sees what the building might look like.”

The magazine also includes an appointments section, as well as tenders and business leads that give both local and international contractors the inside track when it comes to bidding for the region’s new projects.

Construction Week underwent a major design overhaul in May 2007, which readers have responded to immensely well.
