There are 79 students in the Hamilton School Districtwho are served by the district English Language Learners(ELL) services this school year.

An update of the ELL program was provided by JohnRoubik, director of Human Resources and OrganizationalDevelopment, during the Dec. 2 School Board meeting.

The ELL program serves students for whom English isnot their first language. According to a report submitted tothe board by Roubik, approximately 30 different lan-guages are spoken by the students, including Russian,Mandarin and Punjabi, while the two most prevalent lan-

guages spoken by ELL students are Spanish and Hmong.According to the staff report, ELL students are assessed ona yearly basis and are scored on a 1-6 level, with studentsscoring a 1 needing the most services while students scor-ing at a 6 level leave the program after demonstratingEnglish proficiency. The program is administered by onefull-time and one part-time teacher.

During his presentation to the board, Roubik notedthat the number of students served by ELL has remainedsteady over the past six years, topping at 106 in 2012-13while this years figure is the lowest over this time period.

Roubik said ELL students are one of the areas that hasbeen identified in the district strategic plan for the purposeof analyzing achievement of ELL students to non-ELL stu-dents.

It has been a focus of this district for a number ofyears. We have a strategic plan objective thats holdingus accountable to try and close any existing achievementgap that would exist, Roubik said.

According to the report prepared for theboard, the state school accountability sys-tem requires that achievement for ELL stu-dents meet Annual MeasurableAchievement Objectives (AMAO), whichinclude increases in students makingprogress in learning English, exiting the ELLprogram and meeting Annual MeasurableObjectives.

According to reports issued by the state, the district did not meet the reading bench-mark in reading on the WKCE test at themiddle school for the ELL students. Roubiksaid the district was six or seven studentsshort of meeting proficiency in that area.He said the district has done a few things to

try to address that already and Im confidentwere doing the right things with studentsfrom an instructional standpoint.

He later explained that the nuELL students scoring in the advanceficient areas of the WKCE in readactually higher than last year, whetrict did meet the state benchmaexplained that the district did not increased benchmarks from the syear.

Roubik said there are new resoELL students, including vocabulary ment tools.

We really felt it was vocabularthe area of reading that our studenularly struggled with. Thats probsurprising when you consider that them have limited English proficiethey come in with, Roubik said.

He added that the district met area of the AMAO.

In the three and a half years sinceHartford residents Brian and NancyGehrung brought their daughter, Ava, intotheir home from China, their lives havebeen filled with lots of laughter and love.

She is sweet, happy, loving, funny, described Nancy in an interview with theExpress News. She is a great kid wholoves to make people laugh.

The effervescent nature of the nine-and-a-half-year-olda little person with thesame form of dwarfism as her adoptiveparentsmakes it especially hard for thosearound her to watch her experience somuch pain from the near-constant seizuresthat plague the girl.

She has experienced a lot of traumain her short life, said Nancy.

It was clear early on that Ava had neu-rological issues so soon after he adoption,Nancy took her daughter for a CAT scanthat delivered devastating results.

Before we even got home from theappointment, the doctors office had calledus, she said. Tests had revealed that Avahad suffered a massive stroke at birth andthat had affected 75 percent of the left sideof her brain, and the Gehrungs were toldseizures would be a side effect.

A month later we saw her firstseizure, said Nancy. It was even worsethan they thought, she said, as a MEG scanthat captured pictures of Avas seizuresrevealed that the affected part of herbrainthe occipital lobewas continuouslyseizing. In two and a half hours she had atleast 200 seizures.

The Gehrungs decided surgery was thebest option and a year ago they attempteda two-part process; however, Ava was onlyable to make it through the first half of thesurgery due to an undiagnosed blood clot-

ting disorder.A second attempt at the surgery during

which doctors severed the part of her brainthat is seizing from the healthy areas wasmade at Childrens Hospital Nov. 3.

The surgery itself went smoothly withno complications, but the recovery hasbeen slow and painful, Nancy said. Imguessing it will be about four to six monthsbefore she is really back in action, andhopefully there wont be any more surger-ies after this.

It has been a long journey for the family.

Married for six years, the Gdecided to adopt Ava after seeingthe Little People of America adoptisite. Nancy already had two growdrenCollin and Shannon OConnand 19, respectivelybut wanted tofamily with Brian.

    They adopted Ava and we

looked back, said Nancy.Despite her strugglesemotionapsychologically Ava is about fouoldthe girl brings much joy to thand has many gifts, her mother said

Because the right side of Avais strong, she is extremely creatiloves to pick up odd things andbeautiful art out of them, described. She is a huge fan ofprincesses and she loves everyonefamily so much.

The surgery appears to have success, which is exactly whGehrungs wanted, but the medicremain. Also, with Brian undergoinsurgery and possibly missing upmonths of work at the Menomone

Post Office, the familys finances wbe a struggle for the near future. The community has been inc

    supportive through everything, said.

Family friends Bob Howe and Jean Siegel-Howe held a fund raAvaat which more than $5,00raisedat Trysting Place PMenomonee Falls in September.

It was so humbling for usNancy. It was wonderful, but whave people giving us money. Tthat event, the parents were ableAva a motorized wheelchair and nare looking to make ramp modificatheir home.

The family also has a youcarfundraising account set up for thowish to make a donation online. Thof her fundraiser there is Friends Gehrung.

A new one stop shop for furniture, appliances, cabi-netry and construction and building supplies just openedin Germantown.

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the ReStore affiliateof Habitat for Humanity of Washington and DodgeCounties, opened last September at W188N10707Maple Rd., Germantown, Wis to much excitement.

"Its the only store in the world that helps build homes,"

ReStore Manager Bernie Hletko said.Indeed the ReStore is the only retail store that actuallyhelps people get brand new, affordable housing as allthe profits go straight into Habitats home constructionand home repair programs.

But thats not all. The ReStore takes donations from thepublic and nationwide businesses and offers them to cus-tomers at half off of retail. Imagine finding a brand newAnderson window at half cost. They even offer free pickup for donations.

"Its amazing what youll find at the ReStore," Hletkosaid. "It has everything and the kitchen sink."

With the profits from their three ReStores as well asgrants from various organizations such as ThriventFinancial, Habitat for Humanity of Washington andDodge Counties is currently building their 31st home. Incollaboration with that the affiliate has helped to repairnumerous homes through their "A Brush With Kindness"program.

"The way the ReStore works with the affiliate is notsomething you see everyday," Hletko said. "To see suchcollaboration and such a willingness to help other peopleis amazing. Ill be hard pressed to find another nonprofitthat is set up like Habitat. We are one of a kind because

at the end of the daywe will do anything tohelp these people."

So what is a Habitathouse? How do peo-ple qualify for one?

    Executive DirectorRussell Wanta said that

a Habitat home is anaffordable house builtcompletely by volun-teers that through thepower of partnershipand a zero interestloan is made availableto people that demon-strate a strong need.

"We like to partnerwith people in the community that need a hand up in life,"Wanta said. "Through 250 hours of partnership andfinancial commitment to us we are empowering thesedeserving people to own their homes and be an activepart of the neighborhood and the community."

Wanta said the ReStore is one of the most crucial waysthey make these affordable homes possible. He addedthat the secret to all of Habitats success is "average peo-ple that are looking to make a difference in their commu-nities."

"We are 100% volunteer powered," Wanta said."Everyone you see out there with the exception of thebuild site supervisors is a volunteer. Without these won-derful volunteers, we would be left scratching our heads

wondering what to do."Volunteers are a necessary portion of the Ha

model."The volunteers are what make the store, they are

of our greatest assets and we are always lookinmore," Wanta said.

If you want to volunteer or would like more informabout Habitat for Humanity of Washington and DCounties, email [email protected] or call 338-0690.

It's been six years since Benedon's moved into the

Falls from the Colonial Plaza to the current loca-

tion at N85 W16158 Appleton Avenue, next to Bel-

Aire flowers and Chen's Chinese restaurant.

We're proud to part of this great community andhave made great friends and acquaintances, here,

and look forward to the next 6 years and more.

The staff now includes Chuck, Sam and Judy

    Benedon and Brandon Dearth.

Chuck is a diamond dealer and jewelry manu-

facturer by trade for over 35 years. He's a skilled

    guitarist, likes politics and law.

Sam is an outstanding musician, specializing in

guitar while also playing multiple instruments. He's

built numerous guitars and does set up and repair on

    some instruments. He's a "gear-head" with extensive

    knowledge in vintage gear.

Judy is a former grade school teacher whoseorganizational skills help Chuck keep the place

together. She's the real boss and office manager.

B randon, a "picker" since childhood, specializes

in coins and currency and other specialty items.

Last year, we got our Federal Firearms License

and currently provide loans on guns, along with the

other things we've been doing, here.

We are the only licensed pawnbroker in

Menomonee Falls and there are very few in the

entire metropolitan area, and the ONLY Firearms

pawnbroker in southeast Wisconsin. We know thatthere are many businesses that advertise online and

in the yellow pages under the pawnbroker head-

ings, but are not pawnbrokers, at all. They simply use

the term in a way that is wrong and misleading, to

bait you in to sell your valuables. Pawn is a collat-

eral based loan, plain and simple. If it's not a loan,

it's not a pawn. Selling your things is simply "selling."

In some circles, it might be called "hocking."

We hold four federal, state and local licenses,

three bonds and are insured. This is not something to

take lightly when selling your valuables. As an exam-

ple, a retail jeweler is only required to have a sec-

ond hand dealer's license to buy your products nobonds or further licensing required. Pawnbrokers

with licensing like ours, at Benedon's, withstand fed-

eral and state background criminal checks and the

state bank license requires yearly reporting to the

Department of Financial Institutions banking division

    and a clean financial history.

Benedon's is helpful and very loose with i

tion that other dealers won't give you. If you

know the real cost of things, stop in an

Particularly, with jewelry, the markups can b

and the appraised values even more out of As Chuck likes to say, "Dont be a victim of ret

by the retailer!" Don't pay too much for thin
