Dear Parents: I would like to express my sincere appreciation for your partnership in making KES a better school for KES kids. Thanks to those who braved the weather and were able to attend the KES Sneak-Peek. Your support greatly enhanced the hard work put in by our teaching staff. A special thanks to this year's tremen- dous PTO leadership team, as well. Just to prove that a new school really is being built behind those covered fenc- es, I've included a recent drone shot in this issue of the new school construc- tion site. You'll be able to see the perimeter of the new school via an overlay provided by the construction team. Our Terra Nova standardized test results are in. Withdrawing families who are PCSing are receiving their results upon departure. The results for all returning students will be mailed home with the report card. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our two retiring teachers - Ms. Yvonne Brown (Literacy Specialist) and Mr. James Woolfork (3rd Grade Teacher). Both have held numerous teaching and administrative positions in their careers and served on several continents. I consider it an honor, just by association, to be retiring with these two gentle and generous educators. Additionally, the following KES educators will also be moving on to a new part of the world. I know you'll join me in wishing them all the very best - Mrs. Botnick (Music), Ms. Cosper (4th Grade), Mrs. Miller (3rd Grade), Mrs. Tom- linson (1st Grade), Mrs. Guzman (1st Grade), Mrs. Berry (1st Grade). Also, from our paraprofessional and office staff, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Voorhees will be moving on this summer. Finally, a fond farewell to our 5th grade stu- dents as they move on up to middle school, and to our families who will be leaving us this summer. It brings me pleasure to be able to announce the representatives on next year's School Advisory Committee. Parents members include Mr. Mark Landez, Mrs. Gia Witmer, Mrs. Shanon Chorzelewski, and Mr. Lee Roundy. Teacher reps include Mrs. Amanda Tucker, Mrs. Tami Gray, Mrs. Lorri Devalois, and Ms. Ashley Padilla. While all meetings have an Open Forum opportunity, please don't hesitate to contact them if you wish to discuss a school concern. For those families who are returning to KES next school year, classes will re- sume on Monday, 31 August for students in grades 1-5. I'd like to welcome Principal Wiley again, as she will be arriving in August to assume leadership of Kadena Elementary School as I retire from the best job in the world. Parents & Students,

You are invited to a summer filled with learning experiences that will help your brain

blossom! As we head into summer, children and adults alike may have images of sleep-

ing until noon, splashing in the pool, or building sandcastles on sunny, sandy beaches.

After ten months of school, kids do need a break. However, with a little effort the aca-

demic "summer slide" can be minimized. Students can have fun continuing to learn dur-

ing the summer and keep their minds razor-sharp, preparing them for a successful re-

turn to school.

The purpose of the website below is to present a parent and student resource for expe-

riencing fresh, exciting ideas in education. Some website links are suitable for older stu-

dents to explore on their own. Parents of younger children will probably want to spend

some time exploring the links with their children, guiding them to areas to promote

growth and learning. Throughout the website, students of all ages, abilities, and inter-

ests will be inspired and motivated to learn for the fun of it!

Dear KES Families,

Hooray, summer is just around the corner! For most children, this means

more outdoor activities (swimming, camping, bike riding, etc.) and for par-

ents, this means being extra vigilant to keep your child safe and healthy. Here

are a few tips to make this summer as healthy as possible!

1. Be on the lookout and treat spring allergies which can cause your child to

have a lot of sneezing, plus a clear runny or stuffy nose, itchy and watery eyes

and a cough, especially when he/she has spent a lot of time outside.

2. Follow all water safety rules to protect your children when they are swim-

ming or boating. Most importantly, always supervise your children around

any water, deep or shallow.

3. Use sun safety to prevent damage from too much exposure to the sun. Reg-

ular use of sunscreen in children can lower their risk of skin cancer by almost

78%. Sunscreen only works when applied properly, so read and follow all in-

structions. Also remember the importance of wearing proper clothing and

hats, timing outdoor activities to minimize peak midday sun (10 am-4 pm)

when possible, and wearing sunglasses.

4. Use insect repellents safely to prevent bites from mosquitoes, etc. which

can make your child (and you!) miserable.

5. If your children skateboard, ride bikes or four-wheelers, please make sure

they are wearing a helmet. With good safety training and a good helmet, most

injuries are avoidable. If a helmet is in an accident, it is recommended that

you buy a new one. A small crack in a helmet may mean it won't protect your

child's head well if it's hit again.

IMMUNIZATIONS -- IMPORTANT HEALTH NOTICE

Plan Ahead. Don’t Wait. Have Your Child Immunized.

If your child needs immunizations summer is a great time to get them updat-

ed! 5th grade going to 6th 11 year olds. on or before August 25th, will need

Tdap Booster and Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV).

Please bring updated shot records to the front office so that we can keep your

records current. Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions about im-

munization requirements, or any other health related questions! Have a

Wonderful Summer Break!

James C. Woolfork served tours in Bamberg, Germany; Strullen-

dorf ,Germany, and Okinawa, Japan (Kadena Elem. School. During those

tours he served as a third and fourth teacher, acting principal, high school

tennis coach; Educators’ Day Co-Chair; Team Leader, Island-wide Spelling

Bee Coordinator; Video Production Club Sponsor; Taiko Drumming Sponsor,

Union Rep, and volunteer. He still maintains contact with some of his for-

mer success stories, and has visited others. A few years ago he ran into one

of his former students performing with “Tops in Blue” while volunteering

with production staff. Florence and Jim will be retiring to Florida to be reu-

nited with Peace Corps associates(two were on-island a few weeks ago

checking on him), visiting with one centenarian, a 98 year old teenager, and

family members. With friends around the world, the bags will remain semi-

packed. Having volunteered during the summer months to help the less for-

tunate, they will continue serving.

In 1996 Yvonne was selected for the position of Assistant Principal, Zukeran

Elementary and later at Kinser Elementary. She went full circle and returned

to her fist love of working directly with students in second grade, and kinder-

garten at Kadena Elementary School. She is currently a Literacy Support Spe-

cialist and READ 180 teacher. Yvonne has been actively involved in the mili-

tary community and the Chibana Church of Christ. She has worked vigorously

with a number of organizations. When Yvonne retires in June, She will plant

her feet on American soil in Stafford, Virginia to be with family and friends. As

Yvonne’s journey of a thousand miles comes to an end, she would like to

thank each of you for the memories which she will always treasure.

Mrs. Yvonne Brown has served as an outstanding educational leader and role model for youngsters

for over 45 years. The first 10 years she was employed by the Hartford Board of Education as a teach-

er and later as a Title VII Director in the town of Canton, Connecticut. She started her career with the

Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) in 1980 as a second grade teacher in Schwein-

furt, Germany. In 1983 she was subsequently assigned to Atterberry Elementary School in Frankfurt,

Germany. During her service there, she was a second grade teacher, Reading Improvement Specialist,

and a physical education teacher. When Frankfurt closed in 1995, she was transferred to Bob Hope

Primary School in Okinawa, Japan where she again taught second grade.
