All sections of a country form a „National Platform“. That

means that alle German sections form the National

Platform of Germany. At the same time the meetings

where all sections of a country meet are called „National

Plattform“. This long word usually is shortened as NP.

An NP has special rights: only it can elect the National

Board, change the statutes of ESN Germany and make

all important decisions.

The National Board coordinates and leads the sections of

a country. The member of the National Board consists of

volunteers just like you. It is their task to take care of the

sections and ESN in its country.

Important note: should you be relatively new to ESN it

could be useful to take a look at the acronyms used in

ESN. You do not know where to find it? No worries! Only

turn a few pages.

Jena is the second biggest city in Thuringia and was the centre of the optical industry in the 20th century. Carl Zeiss, Schott, Jenoptik—companies that are still determing the townscape.

But obviously Jena has more to offer. 1558 the Friedrich Schiller University was founded and counts nowadays around 21.000 students. Keeping in mind that Jena has a total amount of around 110.000 inhabitants it means that one out of 5 persons is a student. Additionally 5.000 students attend the University of Applied Sciences in Jena.

Historically Jena was a focal point of the German Vormärz as well as of the student liberal and unification movement.

Amongst the most notable persons that lived in Jena are Goethe, Schiller, Abbe, Marx or Hegel.

Today Jena is widely known as a pure student paradise and trust us: Jena is the place to be!

In the dining halls / mensas you can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner starting from 1.50 Euro. There always is a vegetarian option and vegeTable at Ernst-Abbe-Platz is fully vegetarian.

Some advice from our side: Try Thüringer Rostbratwurst! It’s the speciality of the region. But be aware: Eating it with ketchup rather than with mustard identifies you as a Non-Thuringian.

Also try fries from Fritz Mitte! Best fries in town and they make their own sauces (also Vegan). And last but not least eat and drink out in Wagnergasse. There are various cafes and bars.

1996 a small group of motivated students at the

faculty of economics founded the group „Erasmus

Alumni“. With the increasing number of

international students this group wanted to ensure

good offers and support for a better integration in

Jena.

Later on Erasmus Alumni joined the local Erasmus

initiatives of the DAAD (German Academic

Exchange Service) and joined the Erasmus

Student Network in 2000 as the 5th German

section. Since then many things have happened in

Jena and we can look back at various milestones.

For example numerous members of the National

Board came from the contemplative Jena:

Presidents (e.g. the very first president of ESN

Germany), Project Manager, Fundraiser, PR

responsibles.

But our members also like to get involved in

international projects. So e.g. two members got

involved in „Ride for your rights“, an European wide

bike tour. One former member is still active as

Liaison Officer for ESN International on various

conferences and represents the network towards

institutions and organisations not only from

Germany but all over Europe.

We are further especially proud of former Erasmus

students who founded own ESN sections at their

home universities that are nowadays also well-known (e.g. ESN Timisoara was founded by 2

former Erasmus students of ours and will host an

Eduk8 event soon).

We are happy and excited to host another National

Platform in Jena and look forward to meet you all!

By plane:

The closest airport is situated in Erfurt, the state capital of

Thuringia, 70 km from Jena. Other close airports are Leipzig-Halle

or Nurembourg. Leipzig/Halle is accessible by train in less than two

hours, Nuremberg in less than tree hours.

Our advice: if there are no flights to either of those take a plane to

Berlin, Dresden or Frankfurt am Main. From there you can take a

bus or train to Jena.

By train:

There are various train stations in Jena but please:

Choose JENA WEST or JENA PARADIES!!!

Our recommendations concerning Deutsche Bahn: If you book in advance you might be able to get a „Europa Spezial“.

Further some special tickets might be interesting: Quer-durchs-Land

Ticket—only valid on one day between Mondays and Fridays but

you can not take fast trains

Schönes-Wochenende Ticket—only valid on Saturdays and

Sundays but you can not take fast trains

Länder-Ticket—valid on every day of the week, if you buy it in

Saxony-Anhalt or Saxony it is also valid in Thuringia but you can not

take fast trains

By bus:

Bus routes with stop in Jena: Berlin Linienbus, Flixbus, Postbus,

Eurolines

By lift:

Check Blablacar for good rideshare opportunities.

By car:

The North-South and East-West thoroughfares of the Autobahn A9

Rostock-Berlin-Munich and the A4 Dresden-Eisenach-Frankfurt/

Main cross near Jena. Jena itself is linked to the A4 via the

junctions Jena-Zentrum and Jena-Göschwitz. There is access to the

A9 Berlin-Nürnberg via the nearby Hermsdorfer Kreuz.

Parking:

Our recommendation: parking at the Neue Mitte (very central, fee)

or at the stadium (no fee, tram 5 direction Ernst-AbbePlatz or 1/4

direction Zwätzen).
