SURREY – Want a glimpse of what rapid transit might look like in Surrey by as early as 2020? TransLink planners are presenting 10 major rapid transit plans for Surrey residents to peruse as they seek input into various transit expansion designs involving possible SkyTrain extensions, light rail line and rapid buses. The corporation isn’t looking for opinions on preferred routes, but rather, what they think of the designs as presented. “Eventually one of these options will be selected,” said Jeffrey Busby, manager of infrastructure planning for TransLink. “We’re interested in whether or not we’ve designed these 10 in a way that’s acceptable, so that we can do an evaluation of the 10. “We don’t want to do an evaluation based on a design that doesn’t have a basic level of acceptance.” The Surrey Rapid Transit Study, as it’s called, is sponsored by TransLink and the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. It’s expected to be completed by the end of the year. It will then go to the politicians. “This is preliminary work,” Busby said. “We want to come out and consult primarily on design assumptions, and to the extent to which the public influences the designs we need to update that evaluation.” Design and construction would take four to six years to complete, Busby estimated. “What usually takes the longest is consensus on how to pay for it and what the right technology is.” TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie added, “The two dynamics are time and money. The more you have of one, the less you need of the other.” Some major roadways, like King George Boulevard and Fraser Highway, play major roles in all 10 options. Scott Road, however, is currently “not viewed as the most promising candidate for rapid transit,” Busby said. “The Fraser Highway corridor seems to be a very significant travel corridor moving into the future.” In all cases, Surrey city centre is the hub from which the transit routes would extend. The package features options for rapid buses. In these cases, Busby said, it’s “assumed” that the buses would run down the centre of the streets along their own exclusive lane, with stations along the way. They’d run, from Surrey centre, out to Guildford Town Centre along 104th; to Langley city centre along Fraser Highway; and down King George Boulevard ending at 72nd Avenue in one option or continuing down the George to South Surrey, where it would then make a jaunt into White Rock along Johnston Road. SURREY – The newest addition to Surrey’shospital system – the $237-million Jim PattisonOutpatient Care and Surgery Centre – isofficially open.

Health Minister Mike de Jong was in townMonday morning to do the honours and wasjoined by the man who lent his name – andopened his wallet – to the place. Also there forthe ceremony were dignitaries from the hospitalfoundation and the health authority along withSurrey Mayor Dianne Watts.

The centre is the first of its kind in BritishColumbia, de Jong noted, and offers services notavailable elsewhere. He also thanked Pattison, who donated $5 million to purchase equipment, for his generosity before turning his attentionto the staff and volunteers who made the wholething possible.

“The soul of this outpatient facility is thepeople who have helped make it happen andthe people who will provide the services,” theminister told a crowd of about 100 gathered forthe event.

Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundationdirector Tracy Redies had some good newsabout the 100 Days to Give capital campaign forequipment.

The foundation set out to match Pattison’s

donaton in a 100-day campaign.“We are delighted to tell you we have

surpassed our $5-million goal,” Redies said.“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to

all the donors.”The $10 million raised by Pattison and other

donors will be used to purchase specializedequipment for the centre in hopes of attractingleading doctors to Surrey.

The new centre is unique in that it offersdiagnostic services like lab, X-ray, CT andMRI scans, biopsies, day surgery services andspecialized medical programs all under the sameroof.

The centre will offer services currentlyunavailable in Surrey, such as a breast healthclinic to diagnose suspected cancer in 21 days orless, urology services including extracorporealshock wave lithotripsy to treat kidney and otherstones without invasive surgery, the FraserValley’s first comprehensive HIV/AIDS and

Hepatitis C clinic and more. The centre will relieve pressure on Surrey

Memorial, which now handles nearly 134,000outpatient visits per year and performs morethan 94,000 outpatient diagnostic procedures. The majority of those cases will move to the newcentre in Green Timbers.

The 188,000-square-foot building was built toGold standard LEEDS design with six operatingrooms and 10 procedure rooms. The structureallows for 30 per cent expansion when needed, has more than 600 parking spaces and easytransit access.

The centre will become fully operational byJune 14.

NDP MLA Jagrup Brar (Surrey-Fleetwood),however, took issue with the government’s claimthe centre was built “on time and on budget.”

“That’s not true. Their promise to the peopleof Surrey was that it would be finished in 2009,so they’re two years late,” Brar said.

“Also, the original budget was $162 milllion. That rose to $237 million and that’s a significantdifference, so it’s not on budget.”

Brar also expressed concern medical staff willjust be moved to the new centre from SMH andother facilities.

“If we don’t have new staff, we won’t see anychange in service delivery if all they’re doing isshifting people from one place to another.”

The options featuring light transit raillines, some of which also incorporate therapid buses in sections, basically involvevariations on the same routes. Again, thesetrains would run at street level and likelyin the middle of the roads, along their owntracks.

Busby said that along some stretches, lanes for regular vehicles would have to beeliminated, such as along 104th Avenue inNorth Surrey.

“There are a couple of places wherethere isn’t sufficient street space to actuallyaccommodate transit and roads,” heexplained. “So almost all of the optionsthat use King George Boulevard, we canmaintain four lanes of general traffic andtwo rapid transit lanes. Where we don’thave enough room is actually on 104th.Today, 104th is four lanes. To provide rapidtransit on the street we would need to givetwo lanes for rapid transit, leaving two leftover for 104th.”

There are “not many” options for South

Surrey, he added. “But we’ve got a fewoptions that go all the way into SouthSurrey. So for the southern stretch, a coupleof kilometres, we’d need to reduce the laneson King George.”

Possible extensions for SkyTrain are fromKing George Station down the Georgeto 72nd Avenue and from King GeorgeStation down Fraser Highway to Langleycity centre.

Projected costs for stations along toway are from $2 million to 5 million forthe rapid bus and train stations up to $20million per SkyTrain station.

The consultation hearings got underwayMonday night with an online “webinar.”

More consultation hearings in Surreywill be held on Thursday, from 6 to 9p.m., at Surrey’s Simon Fraser Universitycampus, and at Guildford Sheraton Hotelon June 8, again from 6 to 9 p.m. andat the Newton Seniors Hall on June 14,from 6 to 9 p.m. Check out translink.ca/surreyrapidtransitstudy for moreinformation.

SURREY – If there’s no progress at thenegotiating table, teachers across B.C. arepoised to take a strike vote between June24 and 28, according to the B.C. Teachers’Federation.

VANCOUVER – A self-employedbusinessman who tried to annul hisdisastrous marriage with a filipina live-incaregiver whom he claimed would latchonto his ankles whenever he tried to leavethe house has lost his case in court.

The plaintiff, identified in B.C. SupremeCourt documents only as R.H., claimed hewas “coerced” into marrying the 33-year-oldwoman.

Justice Miriam Maisonville agreed withthe “sophisticated businessman” that he’dbeen subjected to coercion.

“But I do not find it disabled him fromfreely consenting to their marriage,” shedecided.

The judge noted that someonealleging duress must prove they were sooverwhelmed “that they were actually in astate of mental incompetence.”

While she accepted R.H.’s claims his wifewas “demanding and exhibited verballyabusive behaviour,” she found this was not

sufficient to override his consent to tyingthe knot.

The court heard that the 30-year-oldJamaican man had immigrated to Ottawawith his family when he was five yearsold. He moved to Vancouver in 2007 andset up a labour consultancy business. Hedrove a BMW, owned property in Surreyand Vancouver, and was netting $15,000 amonth when he met R.T., a 33-year-old live-in caregiver from Philippines.

While Maisonville accepted that R.T.had been “exerting pressure” on R.T., shesaid, “Marriage for immigration purposesalone does not by itself warrant granting anannulment.”

R.H. told the court he was gettingdepressed and losing sleep because he wasconcerned his girlfriend had control overeverything. Nevertheless, he married her onDec. 18, 2009. He testified that she’d beenpressuring him to marry her for monthsand the tipping point came when she toldhim “I will destroy you.”

The couple separated on Feb. 28, [email protected]

Clark scoreswell on myTop 10 list

Soon after she wassworn in as premier,I offered Christy

Clark some advice in thiscolumn about changingsome policies that provedcontroversial under herpredecessor.

I don’t believe for amoment that any premierfollows my advice, of course, but I thought it might beinteresting to see if Clarkhas agreed with any part ofmy “top 10” list and gradeher accordingly:

1. Raise the minimumwage. Well, this was one ofher first decisions soon aftertaking office and the firstindication she was preparedto do things differently thanGordon Campbell. Grade: A

2. Review the province’senergy policy and BCHydro’s proposed massiverate hikes. She has ordereda review of those rate hikes, but that’s the extent of anyaction on the energy file.Still, if a review means lowerrate hikes that will be a goodthing. Grade: C+

3. Review the legalbills arising from the BCRail trial of two formerpolitical aides. She’s metthis one halfway, by namingUniversity of B.C. presidentStanley Toope to review thepolicy of paying legal bills ofcivil servants. Grade: C+

4. Repair the relationshipwith Children’sRepresentative Mary EllenTurpel-Lafond. Majorstrides have been madehere, as Clark appointeda new minister (MaryMcNeill) and, perhaps moreimportantly, a new deputyminister (Stephen Browne). The moves have been hailedby Turpel-Lafond and byTed Hughes, the formerdeputy attorney-generalwho reviewed the province’schild protection system.Grade: A

5. Restore all the gaminggrants to charities andnon-profit organizations. This was one of the dumbestcost-cutting measures ofthe Campbell government, and Clark has partiallyundone much of it. Many, but by no means all, of thoseorganizations are gettingtheir grants. Grade: B.

6. Mend the relationship

with B.C.’s teachers. Anearly sign that things wereturning around on this issuewas the attendance at theannual convention of theB.C. Teachers’ Federation ofEducation Minister GeorgeAbbott, who became thefirst education minister ofthe B.C. Liberal governmentto attend that gathering. Thegovernment also declinedto appeal a court rulingstriking down its law onclass sizes. A good start, but still not enough tosuggest successful contractnegotiations with the BCTFare possible. Grade: C+

7. Change the fundingformula for K-12 education. No change here, althoughthat court decision on classsizes could have an impacton education funding.Grade: Incomplete

8. Review the hikes tomedical service premiumsand the carbon tax as part ofthe “families first” agenda. Sofar, not a peep here. Grade: F

9. Explore using revenuesfrom the carbon tax to atleast partially fund publictransit. Clark has indeedagreed to consider thisapproach within a couple ofyears. Grade: a tentative C+

10. Finally, figure out asolution to stop fares on BCFerries from continuouslygoing up and up. Clark’sgovernment has introducedlegislation to cap fare hikesuntil a review of the entireferry system is completed byBC Ferries CommissionerGord McAtee. Clark appearsto be buying time here, hoping to minimize ferryfare hikes as an electionissue. At the end of theprocess, she’ll have toincrease the government’sferry subsidy anyway.Grade: C+

It’s interesting to notethat all 10 of my suggestionscould probably be found inan NDP campaign platform(indeed, my column was“retweeted” by an NDP

MLA at the time) and Clarkhas adopted most of them tosome degree, demonstratingthere is indeed a new sheriffin town who is substantiallydifferent than the previousone.

It should also be notedthat Clark adopted someadvice I humbly wrotein this space a coupleof weeks back: she hasproposed to chop the rateof the HST by two points,as well as offer more HSTrebates (she calls them“transition cheques”) tomore British Columbians.

I suggested taking thoseactions were the only thingsthat could give the HSTa fighting chance to pass

muster in the upcomingreferendum.

Indeed, an Ipsos-Reidpoll taken for Global Newsshows support for the tax isnow in a dead heat with theopposition to it.

Just a few months back, itseemed inconceivable thatvoters would warm up tothe HST (when it was firstintroduced, polls indicatedopposition to it was runningabout 9:1).

But, way back then, itseemed inconceivable thatChristy Clark would be thenext premier of B.C.

Page 11: Surrey Now - May 31, 2011

The Editor,Re: “How to get tough on drunk drivers,”

the Now viewpoint, May 26.Kudos to columnist Harvinder Sandhu

for blowing the whistle on relatives who leftparties drunk and drove home.

Unfortunately, that approach doesn’tcover the large percentage of people who getbehind the wheel impaired after drinkingthe night away at bars, clubs and pubs.

In these establishments, drinkersroutinely reach levels of intoxicationwithout the benefit of counsel from moresober friends, directing them to take a taxior bus. They often remain unfazed as to thereality of their being incapable of drivingcompetently.

Drunk drivers deserve no mercy. But itseems hypocritically convenient for “tsk-tskers” to lay all the blame on them forthe alcohol-related carnage on our roads.Fairness dictates that all who represent thebeverage alcohol industry (producers andsellers) deserve to share responsibility foreach and every traffic injury/death linked tothe consumption of beverage alcohol.

Shouldn’t they also be held accountablefor the collateral damage done through theconsumption of their spirits?

It seems illogical that those whoprofit from an industry that creates andperpetuates so many social problems shouldcompletely escape accountability.

Certainly, the purveyors of booze should

shoulder a hefty percentage of the nation’shealth and welfare costs incurred as a resultof social drinking – staggering costs that areborne solely by the taxpayer.

Rick Crompton, Surrey

Hydro’s smart metersare massive blundersThe Editor,

Recently, a new kid has appeared on thetechnological block. And, oh joy, Surreycould likely be one of BC Hydro’s sevenprovincial “hubs” for this technology.

BC Hydro’s misguided plan to deploywireless “smart meters” throughout B.C.is being inaccurately promoted as a “greeninitiative” and launched without propereducation, meaningful community inputor ethical options. It is shaping up to be ablunder of monumental proportions.

Similar “smart meter” initiatives in theU.S. have, with much opposition, resultedin city-wide moratoriums, increasing innumber. Here, the meters are upon us,but due to the seeming complicity ofgovernment, industry and media, fewcitizens are aware, let alone prepared tospeak intelligently about, or pursue, options. As yet, most of us in B.C. still have ourattention focused elsewhere.

There is no doubt in my mind thatHydro’s decision to buy into so-called“smart meters” and “smart grids” is ahuge and damaging mistake on so manylevels: safety, security, human health, cost, environmental impacts and human rights.

My own cardiac arrhythmia is onlyone of many health conditions that areincompatible with wireless metering.

The impossibility of avoiding wirelessinfluences in the community will nowexpand to our personal space.

BC Hydro has suggested that people withhealth issues should move off-grid.

What kind of option is that?

Linda Ewart, White Rock

Cellphone towersare nothing to fearThe Editor,

Re: “‘We’d rather not have’ cellphonetowers,” the Now, May 24.

So Deltans would rather not have anycellphone towers. Why? Have they put theircellphones down? Or they’d rather freeloadoff others?

Radiation is all around us 24/7 and thereis more of it all the time. There have beenhigh-profile cases, like the Tsawwassenhigh-voltage lines and the airport full-bodyscanners, not to forget the indeterminatecase of the cellphones right next to yourbrain. People are understandably spooked. Some of this has turned into hysteria.

Unlike longer-distance microwavesystems, the cellphone towers put outrelatively small amount of power. Thisis due to the nature of the cellphonenetworks.

They work in small areas, called cells.Hence the name cellphone. It is like a honeycomb. You see lot of these towers around. They hand your call from one to the nextwherever you may be travelling.

This design was necessitated by the smallnumber of available frequencies and theirreuse every few cells away.

SURREY – Shoppers at aSurrey mall encountered a flashmob of nearly 600 Chimney HillElementary students dancing forthe environment Thursday.

As Katy Perry’s hit song“Fireworks” began to play, the kids– all clad in green T-shirts bearingthe slogan “Go Green” – filled thearea in front of the Central Cityfood court and began to dance.

Why “Go Green?”“Social responsibility is one

of our school goals,” explainedChimney Hill principal, ChrisBaldry. “We have walk to schooldays a couple of times a monthand we really encourage students, parents really, to park their carsand walk to school.”

Baldry said the idea of a flashmob came from Grade 6 teacherHeather Briske. She and Baldrystarted kicking the idea aroundand decided to see if other teacherswere into it.

“They were all on board with it,so we started to think about wherewe could showcase it,” Baldry said.

They talked to the Central Citymanagement, who gave the plana green light. In fact, Baldry said, the mall helped cover the cost ofbuying the T-shirts and hiringbuses to carry the students to thesite.

Small businesses receiveHST input credits. Thatmeans they don‛t end uppaying taxes on the goodsand services they buy torun their business.

B.C. has the lowest HSTrate in Canada, makingour province an attractiveplace to foreign investorsand for existing businessto expand.

HST‛s single tax system reducescosts for B.C. businesses. Thathelps strengthen the economy, create jobs, and makes us morecompetitive internationally.

HST‛s one tax system reduces theamount of time and money B.C.businesses spend on administrationby about $150 million per year.

Consumers have to pay the HSTon the end product. But sincebusinesses no longer pay embeddedtaxes during the manufacturingprocess, their savings can bepassed onto the consumer.

Who is responsible for property taxes? For buyers at this time of the year, the payment ofproperty taxes can be a very confusing topic.Property taxes are paid for the calendar year, fromJanuary 1st to December 31st. Property taxes areofficially due on July 2nd. If, at the time of the signingthe documents, the seller has not paid the property taxesfor 2011, then the buyer is responsible for paying theproperty taxes for 2011.Buyers should receive credit on the Statement ofAdjustments from the seller for the portion of the yearthat the seller occupied the property in 201. For example,if all adjustments for the purchase are done on June 16th,the buyer should receive a credit on the Statement ofAdjustments for the property taxes from January 1st toJune 16th. The buyer then pays a full year of tax and canclaim a Home Owners Grant if they occupy the propertyas their principal residence. The fact that you are paying a portion of the propertytaxes with your mortgage payments can be misleading inthe first year of ownership. Please make sure that your 2011 taxes are paid in order toavoid penalties.

Is there an alternative todrugs and surgery for chronicmusculoskeletal pain?Chronic musculoskeletal pain occurs when ligamentsand tendons are damaged. Over time, movement isimpaired, which contributes to further damage.

Anti-inflammatory medications (Ibuprofen,Naproxen) are often prescribed to reduce pain, butthese ultimately prevent the body’s natural healingprocess, leading to more damage. With time, surgeryis recommended as a last resort.

An effective alternative to drugs and surgery is Pro-lotherapy. Prolotherapy involves injecting a naturalsolution into the area of the damaged tendons andligaments. This stimulates an inflammatory response, leading to growth and strengthening of the tissue andultimately reducing pain and restoring motion. Thenumber of treatments required is commonly between2 and 10, depending on the area affected. Mostextended health care plans cover prolotherapy.

SURREY — At the age of 25, life waslooking rosy for Brigitte Cuthill. Newlyengaged, she was happily planning a late-summer wedding. Then, quite suddenly, shelost a lot of weight without dieting — about30 pounds in just three weeks.

“I thought, ‘Yeah!’” Cuthill said. She was pleased she’d be looking her best

on her big day.But a visit to a doctor and a round of

tests revealed that Cuthill had Hodgkin’slymphona, a cancer of the lymph tissue foundin the lymph nodes, spleen and other areas.Cuthill was scheduled for surgery. Surgeonsremoved her spleen and she embarked onnine months of chemotherapy treatment.

The wedding was called off.As she shares her story 25 years later,

Cuthill said the rapid speed of the discoveryand diagnosis of her disease was a blessing ina strange way, in that it helped her cope.

“It was just bang, bang, bang. I neverthought to breathe in between, it was just sofast,” she said.

Cuthill, a Fort Langley resident, said thegravity of the news hit her family harder thanshe took the news herself.

“My sister couldn’t even say the c-word,”Cuthill said, referring to her cancer diagnosis.

Since her recovery, she’s been having annualcheckups and is in fairly good health.

Next month, Cuthill will be among themany cancer survivors helping to promotethe Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay forLife, held at Cloverdale Millennium Park

Amphitheatre on June 11.The annual event, held on different dates in

communities across Canada, celebrates cancersurvivors, remembers and honours loved oneslost to the disease and raises funds to help inthe fight against all cancers.

Opening ceremonies get underway atnoon and the event includes a number ofother ceremonies and rituals that extendinto the night.

A relay team participant in the past, Cuthillwill be at the event this time to offer words ofencouragement and support to those newlydiagnosed with the disease and still fighting.

Her own stubborn refusal to be beaten bythe disease was strengthened through the loveand support of her family and friends and shewants to share that kindliness.

Even in her darkest moments, Cuthillremained positive about her future.

“I just never thought it was going to beatme,” she said.“I never thought twice, that’s it,that’s me, done.”

Caitlin Berndt, co-chair for Surrey’s Relayfor Life, has a special reason to support thecause.

Her godchild, Sarah Smith, was diagnosedwith choroids plexus carcinoma, a raremalignant brain tumour, at the age of fourand has since passed away.

Berndt, a long-time volunteer with theCanadian Cancer Society, is on a mission tohelp raise as much money as possible to helpbeat cancer and she’s urging the public tosupport the local Relay for Life.

Those interested in registering or donatingfor this year’s relay can find out more at www.relaybc.ca/surrey or by calling Carissa at 604-533-1816.

Keffri Neal knows exactly the momentwhen his whole life changed.

The gifted Fleetwood Park Grade 12runner heads into the B.C. High SchoolTrack and Field Championships in Burnabythis weekend as one of the guys to beat inthe middle distance events, but this was notalways the case. Quiet and withdrawn offthe track, Neal rarely made much noise onit either despite training in the sport sincehe was in Grade 6. He admits his goal wasalways to try and make it into the top threein a given race and if that happened, he wascontent.

In the summer of 2008, Neal headed upthe Coquihalla Highway for the B.C. SummerGames and when he returned from Kelowna,he had a silver medal in his pocket and a newmindset between his ears.

“When I won silver at the Summer Games,I realized I was up there with the top peoplein B.C. and I shouldn’t be satisfied withjust making it into the top three,” he said.“Irealized I had the potential to start winningsome of those races. That was totally new forme because I hadn’t had anything like thathappen to me before. It was a new way ofthinking and it took me a while to get usedto it.”

Encouraged by his showing in the

Okanagan, Neal threw himself into trainingunder the guidance of Surrey Athletics coachBrian Onstad. His hard work was rewardedwith a Fraser Valley junior boys 1,500-metretitle as a Grade 10, which was followed byan impressive 10th place showing at theprovincials for the 800m despite racingagainst rivals up to two years older.

Last year as a Grade 11, Neal built on thatsuccess. In the Fraser Valley senior boys 800mfinal, he finished second with a time thatbroke a 10-year-old record for the event. At

the B.C. meet two weeks later, Neal postedthe fastest time in the preliminary heatsbefore finishing second in the final behindUnity Christian’s Travis Vugteveen.

Neal’s results are a product of mindand body. In races he taps into his ownpersonalized GPS service and instinctivelyknows where he is, where he wants to goand the directions for how to get there. Thisincludes an innate understanding of notonly what is happening around him, but anuncanny knack for assessing the intentions of

other runners in the race.“I try and push myself in my workouts

so I can learn my limits for races so I knowwhen I should make my move and when Ishould kick,” he said.“I try and learn frommy opponents so I know what to expect fromthem and what I have to do to have my bestrace possible.”

Longtime Fleetwood Park track coachNancy Champagne said Neal’s ability to size

A moment of self-realization sent FleetwoodPark’s Keffri Neal on arecord-breaking path

Surrey’s Shallon Olsen stole theshow at the Canadian GymnasticsChampionships in Halifax lastweekend.

The 10-year-old Omega Gymnasticsathlete wowed the crowds with herdaring routines en route to winningthe gold medal in the all-aroundstandings for the high performancenovice category.

Shallon won gold on the vault andadded silver medals for the unevenbars, beam and floor events. Her totalscore of 60.825 easily topped runner-up Brianna Clark of Montreal.

Shallon’s efforts in Friday’s vaultfinal had spectators and officialsshaking their heads in amazement.According to Gymnastics Canada,Shallon nailed a “double twisting

Yurchenko” vault, complete with ahandspring and a somersault withtwo full twists.

The move is difficult for seasonedsenior gymnasts but Shallon made itlook routine.

The judges gave her a gold-medalwinning score of 16.250, far aheadof silver medalist Sydney Townsend’s(Mississauga) 14.80.

up a situation and then adapt hisabilities to the challenge is somethingthat sets him apart from other runners.

“The thing that I am most impressedwith him is his intuitiveness,” she said.“He knows in any given race how muchhe needs, what everybody else has gotand how to read that and use it to hisadvantage. He reads it better than anykid I’ve ever coached.

“It’s something that will take him farbecause it’s not a case where he just hasthe physical athletic ability, he also hasa racer’s mentality. Some people arerunners and some people are racers andKeffri is definitely a racer.”

In February of this year, Nealtravelled south of the border for theearly season Brooks Personal RecordInvitational indoor meet. Although hecame into the event with one of theslowest personal best times of anyone inthe field for the 800m race, Neal pulled

away with 100 metres to go and nobodywas able to catch him. His winningclocking of one minute, 50.91 secondswas the fastest for a high school runnerin 2011 at that time.

“That was really amazing because Ididn’t expect that to happen,” he said.“To be No. 1 in North America at thetime was really huge for me. It reallyinspired me because it happened soearly in the season and I knew I wouldbe running even faster later on.”

Neal has accepted a scholarship offerfrom the University of Kentucky buthe has remained focused on his trackgoals. Earlier this month at the FraserValley championships in Coquitlam,Neal reset the 800m record at 1:50.72when he outlasted White RockChristian standout Sean Keane — afuture teammate at Kentucky — in arace that was one of the highlights ofthe meet.

“I broke the old record last year butI didn’t set the new record because I

finished second,” Neal said.“It’s a reallyfast time and I don’t think I could havedone it without Sean pushing me hardin that race.”

Neal now turns his attention to thefinal meet of his high school career, theprovincials in Burnaby this weekend. He has never won gold in a senior eventat the B.C.s and he admits the pressurewill be building as the meet gets closer.

The cautious side of Neal is evidentwhen he initially described his hopesfor the 800m and 1,500m events at themeet.

“I’m going to run both races but itwill be tough because of the heats thatcome before them,” he said quietly.“Hopefully I can finish in the top threein both races.”

He pauses and then the new, improved Neal — the one who returnedfrom Kelowna almost three yearsago — speaks up, adding: “The bestoutcome I could want is to win both ofthem. We’ll see what happens.”

Phil Reimer’sgolf reportMost Sundays I am all overthe computer looking downthe leaderboards hoping I canfind a Canadian in contention. Idon’t care if it’s the LPGA, PGA,Nationwide or Canadian Tour, where we have found somesuccess.

Week after week it’s becomingmore and more difficult to findCanadians in contention.

So we wait it out, wait for the next Mike Weir, the nextLorie Kane, the next, well you know what I mean.

However this past week was far from dull.

Luke Donald, who has been playing for over a decade, went to number one in the world on Sunday. LeeWestwood had the title but when he went into thewater in the first playoff hole with Donald in the BMWChampionship in Wentworth, England his hold on thetitle went with it. So the number one player in the worldis a golfer that not too many years ago faced the question“Sid he have enough desire and fire in his belly to be atthe top of the heap?” Now he is.

The seniors had their PGA Championship, whereOntario’s Rod Spittle finished 31st and Victoria’s JimRutledge 34th, and to the surprise of only a few, TomWatson at 61 was the winner. It is rare when a playerover 60 wins on the Champions Tour, even though Tomfor many decades was among the best in the world, simply because golfers at 61 don’t win.

There he was: Tom Watson, the man who only two yearsago had a great shot to win the British Open, holding thetrophy high. There’s none more resilient than Watson butin the press tent as he savoured the win he said, “If this isthe last tournament I win I am happy to go out with thisone.”

Click-open-pgatour.com. Keegan Bradley wins PGA’sByron Nelson tournament. Who? Keegan Bradley. Bradleyfinished 14th on the Nationwide Tour. That qualified himfor the PGA Tour this year. He already has three top-10sand after Sunday he has $1,760,000 in the bank andsits 20th on the money list. Not bad for a golfer who isknown and loved by his family and fellow golfers—butfew others. Oh yes, I should mention another golfer under30 (24) winning again on the tour.

To finish off our surprises Isabelle (Izzy) Beisiegelqualified for men’s Canadian Tour.

This is not a new act for the 32-year-old; she has beenattempting to play golf with the men for a lot of years, and up until this past weekend had failed to qualify forone of the men’s tours. She, along with 39 other golfers, played in horrible conditions at Morningstar in Parksvillelast week as the rain poured down on the qualifyingtournament.

Yes, she plays from the men’s tees at 7,000 yards and thecourse with the rain must have felt a lot longer.

Unfortunately, we will not get to see her in the TimesColonist Canadian Tour opener this week in Victoria asshe heads to L.A. for a rest before teeing it up at theWestern Championship at Rivershore Golf Course inKamloops next week.

If you want to take this to its what-if conclusion: if sheshould collect enough points on the order of merit list onthe Canadian Tour she could qualify for the PGA Tour’sCanadian Open at Shaughnessy. Now wouldn’t that beinteresting? Chances are slim that will happen, but fornow her qualification is a first on a major men’s tour.

Have a good week.

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles?

Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzlewill have you hookedfrom the moment yousquare off, so sharpenyour pencil and putyour Sudoku savvy

to the test!

Here's How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill eachrow, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numberswill appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
