However, voice commands work far better than on the system’s original rollout, and while the learning curve is a bit steep, the system works well with familiarity.

Performance:Under the Focus’ new hood is the familiar 2.0L turbocharged engine, punching out 252hp and 270lb-ft of torque. Much more than what’s offered from rivals at VW or Honda, the ST’s straight-line performance is strong, punctuated by more than a hint of torque steer scrabble.

As a highway car, the no-shift passing response is very good. Lots of low-end torque means you can just leave the manual-only shifter in top gear and just let your left foot get you up to speed. Road noise from the 18” alloys and performance tires is less intrusive than in a Subaru WRX.

However, the ST doesn’t really wake up until the road gets twisty. The advantage of having a dedicated European performance arm for decades is that Ford’s hatchback offerings have been fighting off a much larger competitive segment than we experience in North America. Here, we contrast the ST against the GTI. There, they’ve got Peugeots and Renaults to contend with as well.

The closest rival for power-on thrust might be the Mazdaspeed3, a car on borrowed time, but unlike Mazda, Ford doesn’t tame the torque steer inherent in front-wheel-drive cars by cutting turbo boost. Instead, a trick front

Official fuel economy figures for the ST are quite good at 7.3L/100kms on the highway, and 10.2L/100kms in the city. Observed real-world economy is really going to depend on how often you ignore the upshift indicator and just floor it, but the ST can handle a gentle commute without being too painful at the pump.

Green Light:Characterful, engaging drive; usable passenger and cargo space; grippy seats

What’s with the rally-stripes?

Ah, but this is the Focus ST, an over boosted hooligan with big wheels, big brakes, punchy

turbocharged acceleration, and a face like a disgruntled catfish. It’s a genuine hot hatch, complete with seats that wouldn’t be out of place in the Shelby Mustangs.

Ford has a long history of quick compacts overseas, but its North American audience is still getting used to these. When we think “fast Ford,” we usually think “Mustang,” but something with four doors and a usable hatchback is sometimes far more practical.

With the incoming all-wheel-drive Focus RS currently stealing the headlines for its STI-beating power output and hoonish Drift Mode, here’s a look at the regular strength fast Ford. It’s quick, but how does it work as an all-rounder?

Design:Building on the standard Focus is good news for the ST – already a sharp and stylish design, the Focus recently benefited from a refresh including a new front end and restyled 18” wheels. The ST’s headlights now include standard LED daytime running lights, and a power bulge in the hood.

Many hot hatchback rivals to the ST are pretty tame – the VW GTI, for instance, is a relatively genteel machine. Ford’s version is no wallflower, shouting its intentions to the world with a huge front grille, Lamborghini-ish centre-exit exhaust, and available rally-stripes.

On the plus side, people see you coming. On the negative side, people with badges see you coming. That centre-exit exhaust is also a pain for anyone who would wish to upgrade their muffler, as most aftermarket offerings look completely silly when bolted on.

Still, despite the big grille and obvious wheels, the ST can still manage to fly under the radar in a neutral colour.

Here though, it’s as good inside as out. The seats are the biggest improvement, comfortable enough for a cruise to Bowling Green while bolstered enough for a quick autocross session.

Add in swathes of leather, an instrument panel that doesn’t just look up-to-date but is actually ahead of the curve, and easy to use infotainment, and you’ve got a real winner. Looking around for things to complain about, a simple map-button to pull up the navigation would be nice, but really, the Corvette now has the interior quality and look to match its price.

Sit in one, and you don’t even need to drive it to see why it’s a $60-90,000 car. Drive it though, and you’ll wonder why it doesn’t cost more.

Performance:Did I say cruiser? I meant cruise missile. Dawdling along on the Sea-to-Sky behind your usual oblivious rental RV, a brief passing lane opened up. I judged the gap, figured it was big enough, walked on the accelerator.

Under the Corvette’s long hood, a bomb went off.

The all-aluminum 6.2L LT1 V8 in this car isn’t some high-strung, rev-needy turbine. It feels like it was built by the people who produced the B-17 Flying Fortress and Indy 500 winners and Bonneville Salt Flat racers. It feels like it was engineered by hot rodders and computer scientists alike, and when you poke it with a stick it wakes up in a hurry.

For this year, the Corvette gets a new eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shifters that’s the equal of that found in the Jaguar F-Type. But heck, you could hook that V8 up to a Conestoga wagon and it’d make the thing scoot.

455hp comes snarling out almost immediately, with a torque peak of 470lb-ft rocketing you forward. The nose lifts in pure old-school ‘Vette fashion, you dust off everyone in sight, and then you look down at the speedometer and apply the brakes quickly. Holy Dinah: it’s a ‘Vette all right.

Drive it and you’ll wonder why it doesn’t cost more

Throw the Stingray through a few corners or around a skidpad, and

it’s equally wonderful, despite not having the catlike quickness available with the handling package. There are multiple modes for both traction control and driveline management, but you best be ginger on the

throttle if you completely defeat the traction control. In the dry, it’ll

spin the tires from a rest without hesitation. In the wet – well, just make

sure your life insurance is up to date.

And for all that madness, the new Stingray is something of a pussycat. It’ll make distance easily,

is relatively quiet at speed (road noise splits the difference between the old 997 Porsche 911 and the new 991), and will even return liveable fuel economy on the highway.

It’s wonderful, all the best of the old and the new combined together. Sell your kids and buy a Night Race Blue one with the stick-shift.

Features:Chevy’s MyLink system anchors the infotainment for the Corvette, and is simple and easy to use, with nice big touchscreen buttons. It includes the Siri system to control compatible phones.

Fuel economy figures for the automatic-equipped ‘Vette are set at 8.1L/100kms on the highway, and 14.6L/100kms in the city. If you’re driving it quickly on a lonely road, it’ll burn far more fuel, but will easily match the highway mileage on the way there.

Green Light:Power!; great styling; comfortable seats and greatly improved fit and finish; all around performance

Stop Sign:A handful in the wet; limited storage with targa roof off; seating position still a little high

The Checkered Flag:A full modernized and updated take on the Corvette, all without losing the car’s rowdy soul.

Everything else now tastes like styrofoam. Seriously, one splash of ‘Vette hot sauce and even a tuner car starts feeling like the turbocharger fell off.

This is GM’s flagship, the best thing they make (that isn’t a truck). For years it’s been a performance benchmark that many respected – even while complaining about the seats.

Well, they’ve fixed the seats, and the entire interior. And everything else is better too.

Even though this version of the General’s ballistic missile should be tame, equipped as it is with satellite navigation and an automatic transmission, it is not. It’s a beast, a fry-your neurons machine with a removable roof and a push-button starter.

The Chevrolet Corvette is all-new. However, it’s still all old-school too – and that’s a good thing.

Design:More angular than ever, Chevy’s design team took the curving cues of past Corvettes and basically threw them out the window. This new Stingray is all sharp cuts and pointy bits, an arrowhead chipped from obsidian.

I think it looks great apart from the very front end: there’s something just a bit too frog-like about that straight-across grille. However, every other facet of this thing is a masterpiece, from the quad-exhaust trumpets out back to the historic-inspired side-badge to the vents in the hood that let out wavy heat in the cool air.

This particular tester is spec’d as a something of a cruiser, fitted with staggered, split-spoke 19” and 20” alloys front and back, without having the Z51 performance package. If it were my ‘Vette, I’d be spending money on the go-fast stuff and leaving the shiny bits on the table. Still, even the most-basic Corvette looks the business.

Environment:But then, they pretty much always did. The problem with the Corvette for the last several decades hasn’t been the looks or the performance, but the way the interior was always a bit of a let-down. Step inside and you could see where the cost-cutting came from.

Many parents contribute money toward the purchase of their teenagers’ first car. But even those who don’t help kids finance the pur-chase of their first vehicle may still want to offer some advice as their teens start to look for the car they will no doubt remember for the rest of their lives.

Different drivers need different things out of their vehicles, so a car that might be perfect for adults will not necessarily be the best fit for teen drivers without much experi-ence traversing the nation’s roadways. The following are a few factors to consider when helping teens find their first car.

SizeTeenagers have little to no experience

behind the wheel, so it’s best that they not drive cars that are especially small or large right away. According to the National High-way Traffic Safety Administration, young drivers between the ages of 16 and 17 are significantly overrepresented in fatal crashes. The NHTSA suggests such drivers’ immaturity and inexperience plays a significant role in that overrepresentation. So parents likely do not want their children in the smallest car possible, as such vehicles may not protect teens as adequately as slightly larger vehicles in the case of an accident. In addition, very large cars, such as pickup trucks or SUVs, can be difficult to control and are best suited to older drivers who already have years of driv-ing experience under their belts. A mid-size sedan is big enough to protect teens and their passengers in the case of an accident, and such vehicles are small enough to handle easily.

PaSSenger caPacityAnother factor to consider when shopping

for cars for teenagers is passenger capacity. The more seats there are in a car, the more friends teens can pack into their vehicles. Nu-merous teenagers in a car at once can prove distracting to the driver, and that distraction can pave the way for an auto accident. Steer clear of minivans, SUVs or other vehicles that feature a third row of seats, as teens may be unable to stay focused on the road with so many passengers in tow.

Under the hoodFew teens would not light up at the sight

of a muscle car awaiting them in the drive-way. But cars that accelerate quickly and those with substantial horsepower and high-performance engines may tempt teens to speed or spark the development of poor driving habits. Look for a vehicle with modest acceleration instead of an imported sports car that teens may be too immature and inexperienced to handle.

Wear and tearTeens’ first cars are often preowned vehi-

cles, and such cars may have significant wear and tear on some important safety features. Wear and tear may not be a reason to avoid purchasing a preowned vehicle, but parents may want to replace the brake pads and tires on recently purchased preowned vehicles. Brake pads in strong condition may prove the

difference between avoiding an accident or getting into one. In addition, poorly inflated or worn down tires pose a safety risk to teens and their passengers. If such features seem to be worn down, replace them before letting teens hit the open road on their own.

Teens will remember their first cars for the rest of their lives. Parents can ensure those memories are positive by finding a car that teens can handle comfortably and operate safely.
