…on the (southern) shores (of Lake Whatcom) of which, perhaps, the finest trout fishing in the world is found…If a good wagon

road were cut through to this lake and comfortable hotel erected on or in the near vicinity, provided with suitable pleasure boats, no spot on the Pacific Coast could be more desirable as a place

of summer resort…It is certainly one of the most picturesque spots that ever gave brilliancy or romance to a landscape.

Article in the Northern Light newspaper | August 14, 1858

In the northwestern corner of Washington State, just ninety minutes north of Seattle and forty-five minutes from the Canadian border, lies one of the largest, most beautiful timber-lined lakes in the entire Northwest. Lake Whatcom. And it remains to this day, a pristine natural gem little known outside of the immediate surrounding area.

Over 11 miles long, Lake Whatcom, the fourth largest lake in Washington State extends northwest from the foothills of the Cascade Mountains to the city of Bellingham. And Wildwood’s lakefront cottages rest right at the lake’s pristine southern shores on a quiet and serene bay where the lake gets up to 70 (F) degrees come summer.

Here on South Bay at Wildwood very little development has taken place and it will remain that way. The crystal clear waters and the views of this sapphire

lake and green velvet mountains across the bay are quite simply awe-inspiring. Wildwood’s intimate lakefront cottages will become the foundation for memories that will bond you and your family and create a legacy that will continue for generations to come.

As the fresh water reservoir for Bellingham, the care given to this important asset is meticulous…yet it is a wonderful recreation source where water sports flourish in perfect harmony. While the north end of Lake Whatcom is dotted with large luxurious homes, the south end is essentially untouched. A few cabins peek out from behind the trees. Nature abounds and fishing for bass, trout and perch is all at your doorstep. Wildwood’s cottages for sale on Lake Whatcom – pure magic!

Wildwood cottages are cozy and intimate with everything you need for a weekend or a month away! All of the cottages have attached covered decks (240 sq ft) that creates a wonderful indoor/outdoor lifestyle and you can even add a fireplace to the deck area. The plans have either roof top decks for star gazing/sunning or high vaulted ceilings and the lots come fully landscaped. The designs are creative; utilizing clever storage areas and built-ins. The sleeping lofts are perfect for the kids or guests and can be sectioned off into

separate and private areas. There are three interior color schemes to choose from with Alder, Cherry or Hickory cabinets along with quartz counter tops, porcelain bathrooms, hardwood floors, stone fireplaces with cedar mantels, and appliances are included! Curl up in a sunny window seat or relax around the outdoor wood burning firepit that comes with every cottage! There are three cottages ready for immediate occupancy, including all furnishings, or custom design your own with our help!

Wildwood is the only resort community of Lake Whatcom and it is irreplaceable! As a campground since the 1950s its location has been “grandfathered” with zoning and nothing like this will ever be built again. With over 1,700 feet of lakefront on a quiet “no-wake zone” bay, there are over 11 acres of land with two streams and towering cedars. The views are inspiring and the furthest cottage from the lake is only 150 yards! Wildwood is a gated and private community with a full-time resident manager and with landscaping included it really is a carefree and safe environment. Emphasis is on family and most owners have kids or grandkids...a great place to start a family legacy and create memories that will last a lifetime!

And the views are just the beginning:

Negotiators for the B.C. Teach-ers’ Federation (BCTF) and school districts are meeting Friday for the fi rst time since schools were shuttered by a strike in late June, and Education Minister Peter Fass-bender expects new proposals from both sides.

Fassbender said Tuesday it’s the fi rst meeting of full bargaining teams in more than a month, and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) has some “new concepts” to bring to the discussion.

“We’ve already demonstrated our willingness to move on some key elements,” he said. “We need to see the same from the BCTF. Th ey’ve indicated they’re willing to do that.”

Homeless people in Metro Vancouver are less transient than is often thought, according to the fi nal report of the region’s 2014 homeless count.

Seventy-nine per cent of the 2,777 homeless people counted across the region on March 12 had been living for at least a year in the city where volunteers interviewed them. Just over half reported living in the same city for 10 years or more.

Th e minority of homeless who were relatively new in their community were often not new to

the Lower Mainland. At least half the homeless people who moved

into Surrey, Delta, White Rock, Langley, Rich-mond, Burnaby and Maple Ridge within the last year had come from another Metro Vancouver community.

But most new arrivals to the Tri-Cities came from outside the region and most newly arrived homeless in Vancouver and the North Shore came from another part of Canada.

A recent poll shows former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum in the lead for name recog-nition going into the civic election.

Vancouver-based In-

sights West conducted the online poll of 507 people aged 18 and over from July 17-21.

Among the declared candidates for mayor – McCallum and Surrey First’s Linda Hepner – McCallum leads in

name recognition 83 per cent to 67 per cent.

Barinder Rasode, who is planning a run for the mayor’s chair but has not yet offi -cially declared, was not included in the poll.

Both declared candi-

dates were recognized well among voters 55 years old and over – McCallum at 96 per cent and Hepner at 81 per cent.

McCallum leads Hepner by 19 per cent among those aged 18

to 34 (64 per cent and 46 per cent, respec-tively).

And among those aged 35 to 54, McCal-lum (87 per cent) leads Hepner (74 per cent) by a narrower margin of 13 per cent.

Among those who know McCallum, 40 per cent say they are “very likely” or “moderately likely” to vote for him as mayor this fall. Hepner was just behind with 37 per cent likely to vote for her.

McCallum’s issue of neighbourhood wards resonated among those polled, with 53 per cent saying it was a “very good” or “good” idea.

Reacting to Hepner’s statement in a Leader story, people were not in favour of her call

for a ferris wheel at the south end of the Pattullo Bridge.

Of those asked, it was deemed a “bad” or “very bad” idea by 72 per cent of respon-dents.

Crime was listed as the most important issue by respondents at 45 per cent, followed by transportation at 21 per cent, poverty at 10 per cent and economic development at eight per cent.

Th e poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

Poll shows McCallum the most known mayoral hopeful6 The Surrey-Nor th Delta Leader Thursday August 7 2014

Th e closing of the Clova Cine-ma on Sunday, after 67 years as a community theatre, is truly the end of an era.

While the building will remain and likely be refurbished for use as a church, it will no longer be a movie theatre – or a gathering place for the community.

My memories of the Clova go back a long ways. It was the fi rst movie theatre I ever attended as a small child and I still remember the movie – Peter Pan. I likely felt much the same as my four-year-old granddaughter has when she has seen movies there.

Th e Clova has been just as spe-cial a place for her as it has been for me. It was wonderful to share the Abba Cadabra experience with her Saturday night, as the excellent Abba tribute band put on a fi ne show to help send the theatre out in style on its fi nal weekend.

In my teen years, the Clova was a gathering place for high school students, particularly on weekends. It was the scene of many fi rst dates,  and Saturday afternoon matinees were very popular.

Like most community movie theatres, it did quite well until the advent of movie multiplexes in the 1970s and 1980s. Th ey were able to show more than one movie at a time and were more economical to operate.

Th e Clova had been inde-

pendent for many years, but eventually became part of the Odeon chain. In the late 1980s, the chain closed it. For a short time, it served as a venue for live acts. However, it still had a future as a movie theatre and has operated as an independent for many years since then.

Craig Burghardt has operated it for the past 17 years and he epitomizes the best of a com-munity businessman. He has brought in many innovations, such as $4 movie nights and “bring your own drink containers and popcorn bowls.”

In addition, he has made it a true gathering place. It has host-ed birthday parties, fundraisers and sleepovers that likely did not involve much sleeping.

His willingness to help raise money for worthy causes, from youth and school activities to overseas charities, certainly puts him above and beyond many business people.

My daughter Christina worked at the Clova for most of the past fi ve years, when she wasn’t in Africa with her non-profi t orga-nization, the People’s Founda-tion of Sierra Leone. Burghardt ensured the theatre was made available on several occasions to raise funds for the foundation, which among other activities, of-fers scholarships to young people

to attend university in Africa. Her fi rst fundraiser there had

a huge impact on getting the scholarship ball rolling and Clova staff members have played a big role in all the fundraisers.

Members of the community also played a big role in the Clo-va’s charitable activities. Several years ago, my daughter heard about fi ve families who had the roofs of their homes blown off in a windstorm in Kabala, Sierra Leone. She decided to raise funds for new roofs. With help from a story in Th e Cloverdale Report-er and amazing support from members of the community who dropped by the Clova with donations, she raised enough money in three days to replace all the damaged roofs.

On a visit to Kabala in Decem-ber, we were able to meet some of the people who benefi ted from that generosity. Th ey are grateful not to have lost their homes and greatly appreciate all the help.

Th e Clova has been a great place for residents of Surrey and surrounding areas to watch great movies and it has also served as a beacon of generosity to people far away. Th at’s a pretty impres-sive record.

Frank Bucholtz is the editor of The Langley Times. He writes weekly for The Leader.

I would like to share my thoughts about the debacle that the government has created with their dealings with our education system and teachers.

I am an education assistant and deal on the front lines everyday with all the chil-dren being left behind, or out completely.

It is shameful. I have cried many times due to the stress and heartbreak of seeing children struggling daily in this crazy environment (too many kids, too many

types of learners in one class). My heart hurts when I see children that

need support but don’t “qualify” so they are left struggling.

Th en there are kids who qualify for hours but are “not a behaviour” so they have their hours used for someone who causes trouble. I wouldn’t want to be a principal for all the money in the budget – having to say who will receive help and who won’t. I have worked hard to teach children how to read and behave in a classroom – kids who have a chance to have jobs and lives. Th en I watch as the principal has to take away the hours they

have to give them to another in more need.

Who cares if they stagnate, regress, or simply do as well as they could with some assistance, right? Who cares if they don’t have friends because they need help understanding how to play the games? According to many, they don’t matter and shouldn’t be in school anyway.

What about the typical kids that are having problems understanding a subject? Th ey don’t count in this system either. Th ey don’t qualify for help because they have no special needs.

Being a senior citizen driver with more than half a cen-tury of driving experience behind me, I am happy to not have to go through the “L” and “N” phases of driving.

It is good to know that “L” stands for learner and not for loser, and “N” stands for novice and not for nerd. I tell my grandchildren that I thought  the “N” stood for neophyte or even Neanderthal.

I have held a driver’s licence in New Brunswick, Quebec and British Columbia.

If you passed a basic written test – and the driver’s test without scaring the life out of the tester – you passed.

Nearly two-thirds of the region’s homeless are concen-trated in Vancouver, while 15 per cent are in Surrey and the rest are spread out in other communities.

Th e report concluded the number of homeless in Metro has remained “fairly stable” – the total homeless counted has risen just four per cent since 2008, an increase that was slower than the nine per cent gain in population over the same six years.

Th e count found 742 people –

27 per cent of the total counted – had been homeless for more than a year.

It said more research is need-ed to determine if the roughly 300 newly homeless each month are becoming homeless for the fi rst time or are having repeat episodes.

It’s also unclear, it said, whether the relatively stable numbers are the result of more success in housing the home-less or preventing them from becoming homeless in the fi rst place.

Th e report made no reference to the signifi cant provincial

government investments in social housing –  more than $600 million in Vancouver alone since 2006 – as well as increased rental assistance subsidies.

Th e one-day count is an imperfect snapshot of home-lessness in the region conduct-ed once every three years that organizers say undercounts the severity of the problem.

Th e number of street home-less has declined in most parts of the region except Vancouver since 2011.

Among the homeless were 371 seniors 55 and up.

He wouldn’t comment on the new proposals, except to reiterate that the BCTF’s position on benefi ts and other compensation is not in the “aff ordability zone” established by other public sector union agreements.

If the strike shuts schools again in September, the government plans to use the savings to com-pensate parents $40 a day for each child under 13 in public school, to assist with daycare or tutoring costs. Fassbender said there would be no condi-tions attached to the payout.

“My hope is that there isn’t a nickel available as of September, because schools are operating,

teachers are back in the classroom, students are there and there is no further disruption,” he said.

Th e B.C. School Trustees’ Association has urged the government to direct its $12 million a day in payroll savings from the strike to a fund to address class size and special needs support.

Trustees have also called on the union to mod-erate its benefi t demands, which include paren-tal leave, dental benefi ts, massage therapy and increased preparation time for elementary school teachers.

BCPSEA has off ered $375 million over a six-year contract term to provide extra classroom sup-port, and specifi ed class size limits in the teacher contract, to address key issues in a series of court disputes.

TransLink’s day of free transit in apolo-gy for recent service disruptions drew heavy crowds on B.C. Day.

“We experienced heavy volume on most routes,” spokesman Robert Willis said.

Besides crowded buses and SkyTrains, passengers in some cases had to wait two or more sailings to board the SeaBus.

Th at was despite the deployment of TransLink’s third SeaBus reducing frequency to every 7.5 minutes – a level of service the transporta-tion authority says it can’t normally aff ord until new taxes for a major expansion are approved.

Willis said TransLink

anticipated the extra demand and had 46 Sky-Train cars in service, compared to 32 on a normal Sunday or hol-iday, and also deployed more buses as needed.

“We also chose to postpone the regularly scheduled maintenance work on the SkyTrain in order to accom-modate the volume (Monday) night,” he said. “We again thank our customers for their patience as we man-aged the large crowds.”

Th e free day was in compensation for two major SkyTrain shut-downs that disrupted service for more than four hours and saw some passengers exit via elevated guideways.

An independent re-view is underway into the July incidents.

Th ere were many ap-preciative thank-yous to TransLink on social media.

JEFF NAGEL

A referendum next March on new taxes to expand Metro Vancou-ver’s transit system will – if it happens – be conducted as a mail-in ballot.

But Mayors’ Council Chair Richard Walton is far from confi dent the vote will take place.

He said talks with the provincial government continue and while there has been some behind-the-scenes progress, there has been no breakthrough.

Walton said a deal on the size of the expan-sion and how it would be funded, along with referendum details, must be hammered out in advance of the next mayors’ council meet-ing Sept. 20 or else local politicians will be immersed in civic elec-tion campaigns, after which there won’t be enough time to educate the public about the options.

“Th ere’s no ques-tion if a referendum happens it will be late March,” Walton said, adding that’s when there would be the most people and particularly transit-rid-ing students in town. “You want to engage as many university students as possible because they’re heavy transit users.”

Mayors in June laid out their transit in-vestment vision for the region to meet public demand for much more bus service and new rapid transit lines as Metro’s population grows.

Th e preferred source of new funding for TransLink would be a new regional carbon tax – after the province ruled out sharing some of its existing carbon tax revenue – with some form of mobility pricing to come over the longer term.

But some mayors have wavered on the short-term source – Walton said other alternatives to the car-bon tax that are still on are an annual vehicle levy or a regional sales tax.

Charging more in car-bon tax for TransLink in Metro Vancouver would eff ectively mean higher gas prices – in addition to home and

business heating costs – and would be prone to the same problems as TransLink’s existing gas tax, which has been pulling in less than TransLink expected as cars get more effi cient and drivers fi nd ways to reduce fuel use or buy it outside Metro.

“Th ere may have to be some pragmatic de-viation,” Walton said.

Th e province’s big-gest objection has been the large contributions toward the $7.5-billion capital investment plan that the mayors want from the provincial and federal governments.

But Walton said he believes Transporta-tion Minister Todd Stone will accept the plan as written, even though there may be disagreements for now on how to raise the money.

“Th e vision is sound and it does fulfi ll what

the province request-ed,” Walton said. “It’s really a statement of priorities for the region.”

It also remains unclear as to wheth-er mobility pricing – which could include some form of regional tolling or per-kilome-tre road use fees – will be on the referendum ballot.

Walton is in Cali-fornia this month to gather more informa-tion on U.S. trans-portation-funding initiatives.

Los Angeles area res-idents recently voted 67 per cent to approve a 0.5-per-cent increase in the local sales tax for transit expansion.

Walton said most voters there may not use transit but recog-nized its value and he hopes similar logic will prevail here.

“Nobody was ever

advocating for a second you get rid of freeways in Los Angeles,” he said. “But by shifting some of those travel patterns and freeing up capacity on the roads, a lot of people’s com-mutes is a lot shorter.”

Another question mark is whether the province, including the premier, will campaign for the yes side.

Mayors want to see active involvement from the province, but Premier Christy Clark previously suggested the province would be offi cially neutral on how residents should vote.

“My understand-ing of referenda in the States is that it’s critical you get your levels of government aligned and support-ive,” Walton said. “It certainly increases the chances of a referen-dum passing.”

Local Glee Club hits a high note

A singing group, where the average age is over 80? You bet. At Sunridge Gardens, a seniors’ residence in Langley, living vibrantly is a part of everyday life. And although all four Bria Communities (two in Langley and two in Tsawwassen) exude a philosophy of ‘living large’, it’s the residents who keep the ac-tivities and groups thriving. The Glee Club is no exception.

Walk into Sunridge on any given Wednesday morning, and you’ll hear the happy refrains of oldies like The Tennessee Waltz or Take Me Out to the Ballgame, being belted out with great enthusiasm.

Hardly surprising though, for a Bria community. Known for their out-of-the-box approach to active living, activities are always resident-focused and ever-evolving. In fact, all four communities work hard to bring unconventional, fresh ideas to

When you’re happy, you just want to sing. Nearly 25 members of the wildly popular Glee Club at Sunridge Gardens wholeheartedly agree. At this Bria community, they’re hitting all the high notes.

Douglas Stewart leads the incredibly popular Sunridge Gardens Glee Club with the 25 residents who put together their own singing group.

every aspect of living. For example, Sunridge was

awarded LEED Gold certifi cation (a standard for green building), while all interiors exude con-temporary details like upscale furnishings and clean, inviting surroundings where residents feel completely at home.

When Recreational Assistant Douglas Stewart, an accom-plished actor and singer, brought forth his vision of a singing group, even he couldn’t predict the incredible popularity of the Glee Club. Now up to nearly 25 voices strong, the members pro-fess it to be the highlight of their week. “It’s so popular. They can’t wait for Wednesday mornings!” Manager, Shannon Saunders says happily about the program.

It’s no secret that singing is liberating, improves mental acuity, and when done in groups: highly sociable and just plain fun. Naturally, singing

isn’t everyone’s tune, but Bria residents have opportunities to participate in countless other activities like walking groups, gardening, Bocci tournaments, bridge, poker, ice cream socials and shopping excursions.

Shannon is quick to point out, “it’s the people that make the dif-ference. They are the reason why we do what we do” She explains that the residents truly feel their community is home, so they con-

nect with a family-like energy. There is a constant buzz and banter. There is vigour. There is a curiosity and willingness to participate, while most import-antly: there is happiness. “And when our residents are happy, they are inclined to sing.”

Recent high profile municipal road safety plans—Vancouver’s and New York City’s for example—have

imported the ‘Vision Zero’ objective, a future in which no drivers or passengers or vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists are injured or killed on the roads. Inevitably, discussion of this objective turned to the aspirational value of a utopian vision, which implied, of course, that it was impossible to achieve and unrealistic and, hence a nice idea, a catchy term, but out of reach.

As trend lines in the early-motorized countries continue to show steady improvement demonstrably linked to specifi c changes, ‘Vision Zero’ visionaries are encountering less skepticism. Road Rules applauds these developments and all eff orts to promote universal ‘buy in’ and hence motivate achievement. Th us we commend and recommend to our readers Cars vs People in the June 10, 2014 Maclean’s Magazine written by Brian Bethune. Th is article discusses the plan to end traffi c fatalities in Canada by 2035 — No Accident: Eliminating Injury and Death on Canadian Roads, written by Neil Arason, a BC civil servant and road safety researcher.

Vision Zero visionaries agree that with the possible exception of the self-driving car, there is no silver bullet for achieving zero road fatalities and injuries. Changes are needed in all three main contributing factors: driver behaviours and skills, road design, and vehicle design. Ultimately the sum total of these changes will continue to push the trend

lines in the right direction—down—to zero. Debate tends to concentrate on the needed changes, their eff ectiveness and the way they combine to produce results.

Mr. Arason, however, takes a slightly diff erent approach by favouring the two ‘designable’ factors over the behavioural one. He is quoted as saying that, “the human factor does matter a lot, and safety measures should aim to infl uence driver behaviour, the more automatically the better, but a shift of focus to the road system and, above all, to the dangerous machines we drive… is what will make Vision Zero conceivable and possible.”

Th e development of Mr. Arason’s thesis makes for a stimulating article (and book, no doubt) but may not persuade everyone interested in the topic. Th e proposition that we may have reached the limit of controlling or minimizing the risky propensities of the “idiot behind the wheel” —to tire, to be distracted, to disobey the rules, etc. is undercut by the irresistible urge to continue advocating for changes in this area as well, such as lowering the permissible blood alcohol levels and raising the minimum age for starting Graduated Licensing programs. But so be it. Any way to advocating for such a vision is well worth exploring.

One rationale commonly advanced for Vision Zero is the economic waste of road injuries and fatalities. Mr. Arason notes, “Th e annual economic carnage wreaked by car accidents, as estimated by Transport Canada: $63 billion.” Th is money pays for those who deal with the consequences of motor vehicle accidents: police, emergency responders, doctors and a host of other health care professionals, auto body shops, insurance agencies and brokers, lawyers, judges, and funeral directors.

Th e dreadful disease smallpox, a plague upon humanity for thousands of years was declared to be eradicated in 2011. Likewise one day, the car crash.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

Streetside Developments is bringing convenience and luxury to South Surrey’s emerging neighbourhood of South Point with South Point Walk, a collection of condominiums that is close to everything you can possibly imagine.

“Th is is a very unique location,” says Vanessa Isler, marketing and sales manager for Streetside, a division of Qualico. “Th ere aren’t too many suburban locations where you can walk two minutes to get a coff ee or dinner.”

South Point Walk is just steps from shopping and dining at

South Point Exchange, as well as the boutiques at High Street via a walking path directly linking the two.

Homeowners will also have easy access to the U.S. border and Highway 99. Schools, golf courses and other leisure and recreation opportunities are also just minutes away.

Th e beauty and convenience of the location continues at the homes themselves. Outside, the West Coast contemporary architecture features bold roof lines, hardi shingles and arched brick accents. Each home has a large balcony, and the ground

fl oor homeowners will have a spacious patio and direct access to green space.

Inside, the kitchen includes classic shaker-style cabinetry, complemented by a solid eased square-edge Quartzite countertop and full-height ceramic tile backsplash. Stainless-steel appliances, recessed pot lighting and under-cabinet task lighting all combine for a truly beautiful space.

Th e bathrooms are spa-inspired, with solid slab granite or Quartzite countertops and undermount basin sinks. Th e ensuite features contemporary fl at panel cabinetry, in-fl oor heating and a hand-set ceramic tile tub or shower surround with marble tile accent. Th e second bathroom, where applicable, has shaker-style cabinetry and a deep soaker tub.

Streetside is counting down to the completion of the fi rst phase this fall, and is currently off ering a promotion on the available homes.

Homes at South Point Walk start at $226,900. For more information, visit www.southpointwalk.ca, call 604-560-3238 or visit the sales centre at South Point Exchange, 860-3014 152 Street, Surrey, open noon to 6 p.m. daily except Fridays.

Making a move to South Surrey’s South Point Walk

By Kerry Vital

Washington’s Lake Whatcom is a largely undiscovered gem for Canadians, yet it is only 55 kilometres south of the Blaine border! Lake Whatcom is over 16 kilometres long and a pristine watershed. It serves as the drinking water for nearby Bellingham so it has stringent rules in place to protect it, and that makes swimming and all lake recreation even better.

At the south end of the lake on a quiet cove, a family campground called Wildwood has been a popular designation for Canadians since the 1950s. It has recently been redeveloped into a private cottage community and now you can purchase your own family getaway at Wildwood Lakefront Cottages, right on the picturesque shores at South Bay.

Th e natural setting is one of the highlights of Wildwood, with its two streams, huge cedar trees and pristine lake and shoreline. Th e Canadian developers have added in a tennis/ball hockey court, a swimming pool and hot tub, playground, walking trails, clubhouse, marina, and covered picnic pavilion to complement the lake activities.

“It’s a real family experience,” says Wayne Lyle, the developer’s Canadian spokesperson. “Canadians are buying here for the legacy, for the memories.”

One of the big draws for Canadians is that the property is gated and private, has a resident on-site manager, and your landscaping is all looked aft er.

Whether you want to go fi shing, take out the canoe or go for an evening swim, you’ll fi nd a ton of outdoor activities available on-site. Th e private marina has 34 private boat slips and 15 mooring buoys, and a number of guest slips.

Th e cottages themselves are made for cozy family times, with fi ve diff erent fl oor plans to choose from and three natural colour schemes. Th e main fl oor features the living areas, sunny window seats, decked-out kitchens and one bedroom or one-bedroom plus den confi gurations with sleeping loft s above.

“Kids love the sleeping loft s; the ceilings are fi ve feet in height,” Lyle says. “Th ey think it’s built just for them!”

While not large in size, these are upscale cottages with hardwood fl ooring, quartz

countertops, stainless-steel appliances and stone fi replaces. Some of the cottages have rooft op decks that are perfect for star-gazing.

Each cottage includes a covered outdoor deck to give you that indoor-outdoor life that everyone loves in the summer, some with an outdoor fi replace.

You’ll also fi nd an outdoor wood burning fi re pit with every cottage, perfect for lazy fall nights full of stories and s’mores. Wildwood is also fortunate in that it has over 1,700 feet of waterfront; that means the furthest you can get from the lakefront from any cottage is

only 150 yards!“Th is a great base camp for families,” Lyle

says. “With many other Pacifi c Northwest attractions nearby and with the price of real estate in B.C., this lakefront property is certainly a very attractive alternative!”

Lots at Wildwood start at $160,000, and fully fi nished cottages including lots start at $330,000. For more information, visit www.wildwoodlakefrontcottages.com or call the Canadian offi ce contact number at 1-855-588-7788. Th e site is open for tours on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or any time by appointment except Sundays. Call today for an appointment!

Submitted photosWildwood Lakefront Cottages are located on Washington’s Lake Whatcom, just 55 kilometres from the Blaine border. Right on the pristine shores of the lake, families will fi nd plenty of activities, or just the perfect place to relax and enjoy spending time together.

Surrey’s Samantha Ogbeiwi sprinted to silver in the 200-m dash at the Hershey’s North American track and fi eld fi nals over the week-end, making her mom proud – and Canada, too.

Th e 12-year-old Katzie Elementa-ry student “had a gorgeous run” in

Hershey, Pennsylvania, according to one of the announcers covering the event in a video of the race online.

Ogbeiwi, who trains with Ocean Athletics Club in South Surrey, was positioned in the outside lane, running against girls from across the U.S., and another Cana-

dian, Lea Savard of Trois Rivieres, Quebec. Her time of 27.85 in the 200-metre

sprint for 11- and 12-year-old girls was just one-tenth of a second behind fi rst-place runner Reagan Gallagher of Pasade-na, Texas.

Th e games are the largest of their kind.“Canada continues to show really, really

well, here,” the announcer at the compe-

tition added. “Samantha Ogbeiwi from Surrey, British Columbia had a gorgeous run.”

Her mom, Dayo, said Samantha was veryhappy with second place.

“She wanted to win this one,” Dayo said. “She fought so hard on a very tough lane eight and ran the race with all she got. Shewas fl awless.”

With the number of golfers teeing it up decreasing, Eaglequest Coyote Creek is pro-moting a non-tradition-al sport to lure people back to the green.

FootGolf is now off ered at the Guild-ford course, an 18-hole sport that sees partic-ipants kicking a soccer ball as opposed to swinging a club.

“We’re excited, we have received lots of positive feed back from a lot of people who are

playing,” said Coyote Creek spokesperson Janette Richardson.

“Th e fi rst (FootGolf) course to do this was in Salmon Arm, we’re the second.”

Currently there are just three courses in B.C. off ering FootGolf through the Canadian FootGolf Association. And more are expected as fewer people take up traditional golf.

“Golf numbers are declining,” said Richardson. “It’s down seven to 10 per cent

all over. We’re just guessing,  but we think the younger generation is getting caught up in video games and don’t get out as much as they used to.”

Coyote Creek launched FootGolf last week and has received plenty of response.

“Th ere’s positive feedback, and there’s the negative,” said Rich-ardson. “Th ere are some people who think we’re taking away from golf, the traditional game.”

But there are many

who enjoy the newer sport. It costs just $15 to play a round. At the offi cial opening,

roughly 100 people registered to play, and several businesses have inquired about hosting

a company FootGolf tournament.

“It takes just two hours to do 18 holes,”

said Richardson. “You just aim for the big pots, marked by the yellow fl ags.”

With a chance to advance to the semi-finals, the Whalley Chiefs let a 5-1 lead

slip out of their hands, losing 9-5 to the North Shore Twins at the U18 B.C. Premier Baseball League provincial

championships on the weekend.

The teams were playing a tiebreaker on Monday morning at Whalley Stadium to determine which team would face the Vancouver Cannons and have a shot at the provincial champion-ship game later that day.

The host Chiefs and the Twins, who both finished the round robin portion of the tournament with 2-2 records, each scored a run in the first in-ning. The Chiefs’ run came on an RBI single from Lucas Soper.

Whalley seemed to have grabbed con-trol with a four-run third inning, loading the bases and then scoring one run on a hit batter, a two-run single from Cole Hunt and an RBI single from Max Williams. But the Twins scored four runs in the bot-tom of the fourth and then another four in the sixth.

The Chiefs opened the tournament with an 8-0 loss to the Langley Blaze on Friday, before beating the Victoria Mariners 5-2 on Saturday.

Whalley shut-out the Vancouver Can-nons 4-0 on Sunday and lost 12-2 to the Twins later that day in their final round robin game.

The Langley Blaze won the champion-ship 4-3 in extra in-nings over the Twins.

An Escalade worth the waitCadillac recently held the introduction of its all-new Escalade in the heart of Toronto, specifically the heart of Yorkville. This upscale slice of Toronto real estate is home to spendy shops, exclusive restaurants and luxurious ho-tels. This is a place to be seen or be seen in a vehicle that projects the image one wants to portray. Media guests for the Escalade launch stayed at To-ronto’s very first boutique hotel, The Hazelton. As one Torontonian put it, “that’s about the fanciest place in town.” It certainly draws an upscale crowd of rich people, or posers, looking the part. With a steady lineup of Ferrari, McLaren and other exotics parked outside, Cadillac was front and centre showing off its new full-size luxury SUV to a young, well-healed crowd of Toronto socialites and business people.

LooksGetting a full-size truck into a boutique hotel is like trying to park in one of those parking spots labelled “small car”. To get around this, the party part of the launch was held on a garage rooftop, transformed into a nightclub, complete with gourmet finger food, fancy

cocktails and live performers, including the requisite fire-twirling entertainers. There was even an Escalade-inspired golf cart to shuttle guests to the roof. The star of the show was the all-new 2015 Escalade, a vehicle Cadillac hopes will make up about 20 per cent of its overall sales. With a $6,000 price drop and very competitive packages, they hope even wealthy shoppers will stop to see the value in this SUV. It sure got attention, thanks to the fabulous LED projector headlamps and taillights. The angular shape is very contemporary and the sleeker sheet metal looks up to date.InsideThe Escalade has always made an impact when it arrives at any destination; the sheer size and attitude it projects says a lot about the person driving it. It is inside that needed to be refreshed the most, and the attention to detail Cadillac infused in its new truck should pay dividends. Any luxury buyer expects leather, wood, and smart infotainment and Cadillac delivers on all of these. The dash and doors are cov-ered with hand cut leather. The open-grain wood and contrasting interior materials like faux suede all make it look as rich as the buyer expects. Front and centre is Cadillac’s CUE entertainment system that I find easy to operate and interact with. The buttons below it are touch sensitive, there are no knobs or switches. The front passengers just swipe over the surface to change the volume and heat controls. DriveOne reason to buy a big truck-based SUV is to move people in numbers or tow a trailer to a cabin or cottage. That latter experience came with the drive portion of the Escalade launch, driving north of Toron-to to The Briars, a 100-hectare resort on the edge of Lake Simcoe. This family run complex includes a huge stretch of lake frontage, golf course, pools, tennis and activities for all ages and the Escalade fits right in. For moving a large family around in comfort, the

Escalade is wonderful as there is plenty of room to stretch out when the long wheelbase (ESV) model is chosen. Granted about 70 per cent of all buyers choose the shorter wheelbase as it looks less imposing and some might not need the interior vastness. Under the hood is GM’s premium 6.2L V8 with a whopping 420hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. This might seem like overkill but this larger engine can switch off to just four cylinders under light load, more often impacting fuel economy. The power goes to just the rear wheels, all four wheels or automatically controlled, all by a switch on the dash. My experi-ence driving for the day returned about

12L/100km in mostly highway driving. Not bad for a big truck.

VerdictThe new Escalade adds about $10,000 worth of new equipment like standard magnetic ride control for a more nimble ride. The cabin is much quieter, for doing big business deals on the phone, and the ride overall is much more refined than before. Starting at $79,900 the Escalade is for the well healed, but Cadillac representatives told me that most buyers shoot for the moon and buy the top Premium model for $90,500. The new Cadillac is fresh and much more refined, with features like never before. Do young wealthy buyers like the Cadillac brand and where it is going? The short answer is yes. GM claims this is the fastest growing luxury brand in Canada and B.C. is a hot spot for the Escalade. It has been seven years since we’ve had an all-new Escalade… the wait was worth it.

A forest fi refi ghter’s truck of choicedrivewayBC.ca

Forest fire conditions in this province are at an all-time high and the wood is very dry. The men and women that fight these fires every year

rely on their vehicles to take them to the battlefield. Remote back roads and sometimes the forest floor are the roads on which they must travel.

There is a variety of vehicles in the firefighter fleet but lately they have been using the Ford Super-Duty as the prime support vehicle. The new 2015 version is pow-

erful enough to haul heavy trailers and large enough to double as a mobile office. The 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V8, with higher power ratings for 2015, coupled

with a 6R140 heavy duty Torqshift six-speed auto-matic transmission delivers improved torque, horsepow-er and fuel economy. The en-gine pumps out a whopping

860 ft.lb of torque at 1,600 rpm and 440 horsepower at 2,800 rpm. It has lots of get up and go. Ease your way into the throt-tle and before you know it,

‘‘There is a variety of vehicles in the firefighter fleet but lately they have been using the Ford Super-Duty as the prime support vehicle.’’Ian Harwood

you are at highway speeds. Power and acceleration are smooth and effortless. When properly equipped the Super Duty has a maximum tow rating of 14,152 kg (31,200 lbs) and a total payload of up to 3,293 kg (7,260 lbs)The interior is very func-tional. The available LCD productivity screen keeps you up to date with vital information, for example fuel economy numbers, towing, off-road information and voice command navigation. A rapid heat supplemental cab heater is available for those cold days that you need interior heat quickly. When you leave your mobile office, it is nice to know you have options with storing your valuables. Under-seat locking storage compart-ments beneath the first and second row seats provide space for laptops and other important things. I really liked the layout of the gauges and controls in this vehicle; all are easily read and accessible. There are 12-volt outlets everywhere, two in the dash, one in the centre console, one in the back of that console, right beside the newly added 110V/150W power inverter and there’s a supply located in the rear under seat storage bin on the driver’s side. The front seats I found very comfortable and perfect for a long day at work. The rear seating positions were also very comfortable with lots of legroom.Noise levels in the cab, or lack thereof was amazing. This is must be the quietest diesel on the planet. It runs as quietly as a gasoline vehicle. You can easily hold conversations in the cab at any speed with no interfer-ence from outside sources. It was also a treat to be able to order from a drive thru window without having to shut the truck off! Remember, when travelling the back-roads this summer, pay attention to the Fire danger rating, follow any camp fire bans, and report any fires you see too 1-800-663-5555 or *5555. Drives-U-CrazyBike Lanes

Here’s a summer time teaser for those with designat-ed bike lanes separated by a physical barrier – curb stone – in their community. On a regular road if a bike flies by on the right, just as you are making a right turn on a green, it’s a ticket-able offence for passing on the right. However, these new separated lanes seem to have given cyclists a false sense of security because they ignore the rule. They just assume drivers will yield the right of way as they zip by.
