    SURPASS supports LifeWorks, the Siemens

vision and strategy for the future of tele-communications. SURPASS opens the door

to the world of Next Generation Networks

with its attractive applications and smooth

migration towards all-IP and optical net-

works. It provides the building blocks for

    your network of the future:

    s Next Generation Switching

    Carrier-grade and customized Voice

    over IP solutions are complemented

by a wide range of attractive con-

    verged voice/data applications.

    s Next Generation Optics

Flexible solutions for migrating yourtransport network towards NGN

    while keeping track of OPEX.

    s Next Generation Access

A complete range of flexible access

solutions offering any voice, data and

video service required for today and

    tomorrow.

    s Next Generation Network Management

    Comprehensive management solu-

tions based on standards and open

    interfaces, guaranteeing evolution

    capability and the fastest possible

    launch of new services.

    In todays telecommunication markets, ba-

sic telephony services are still a major sourceof revenue for carriers, but in many geog-raphies they have become a commodityoffered by numerous service providers withlittle differentiation. Under the pressure oferoding margins, network operators are fo-cusing on new sources of revenues whilemaking best use of their existing assets.

The new end-customer demand is in voice-data converged services. Businesses as wellas residential users are increasingly askingfor next generation services and applica-

tions. Residential users are continuing toadopt broadband at a rapid rate and are in-creasingly looking for value-enhancing ap-plications for their broadband environmentsuch as interactive games, movies, TV re-play, video-telephony and music downloads.

Business users are facing difficult communi-cation dilemmas that need to be solved. Peo-

ple must no longer work in isolated teams, but in global communities with a commongoal and they will become increasinglymobile. As can be seen in Figure 1, the next

few years will see a shift in business com-munication behavior: the synchronizing, integrating and managing of communica-tions regardless of media, device, applica-tion or location.

Increasingly, ISPs are encroaching into the

domain of voice carriers by offering VoIPservices with enhanced features. Carriersneed to have a solution to defend and re-tain their markets and revenues from thisnew threat.

This poses a major problem for those carri-ers who have a TDM base that is still prof-itable but who are not yet under pressureto implement IP-based services. They arewell aware that this situation will change, and may change faster than expected. Car-riers worldwide regard the Next Generation

Network as the right approach to changingcustomer demands, but have functioningTDM networks in place. Most carriers there-fore prefer a step-by-step migration approach

for their transition process, successivelyadding IP functionality to their existing net-work.

The ideal solution would provide the best ofboth worlds by allowing continued invest-ment in TDM while preparing the ground, both financially and technically, for IP-basedservices that can be taken advantage of at

the appropriate time. But does such a solu-tion exist? And if so, does it really give free-dom of choice in deciding if, when and howthe threshold to an IP-based solution iscrossed?

    Optimized for TDM Networks

In many parts of the world, the demand for

voice channels continues to grow and thebusiness from voice services remains high-ly profitable. In such a situation, however,it can be difficult to choose the next stepforward. Should you stay with TDM, accept-ing the short-term returns this brings or in-vest in IP solutions for which in some coun-tries a demand may not yet be fully devel-oped?

This situation need no longer present youwith such dilemmas. The SURPASS hiE 9200

Migration Switch is the further development

of the well-known EWSD with improvedfunctions, reliability and performance. Itpossesses the lowest downtime of all TDMswitches but this is only one reason whymore than 350 operators have chosen EWSD.

Their satisfaction has resulted in more than300 million installed ports worldwide. On-going improvements focus on the benefitsto our customers, including low power con-sumption, footprint reduction, more pro-cessing capacity, improved operability andmaintainability and a multitude of revenuegenerating features and services. One ex-

ample is the more compact system core witha footprint reduction of 25% compared tothe standard assembly of the core compo-nents. With the latest generation of accessequipment (Digital Line Unit, DLU), we haveachieved a 50% footprint reduction per ana-log subscriber line and approximately 30%less power consumption compared to theprevious generation.

A TDM Switch for all Network Levels

The SURPASS hiE 9200 Migration Switch isthe solution for local networks, transit net-works, international gateway networks andcombinations of all of the above. Wherev-er your SURPASS hiE 9200 Migration Switchis used in the network, it can also serve asa Service Switching Point (SSP) in the Intel-ligent Network (IN).

9200. Smaller remote Digital Line Units(DLUs) can be attached as indoor or out-

door installations (RSDLUs) to the hostSURPASS hiE 9200 and to the larger RSUs,thus shortening the local loop length.

In transit or long-distance networknodes, interregional and mobile traffic isswitched to and from other network nodes.Up to 240,000 trunks may be connectedto a SURPASS hiE 9200 transit network node.

The SURPASS hiE 9200 includes all functionsrequired for an international node, suchas international signaling, echo compensa-

tion for intercontinental and satellite con-nections, inter-administrative charging andSS7 screening and accounting.

Local network nodes are used for switch-ing incoming and outgoing subscriber traf-

fic. Up to 600,000 subscriber lines can con-nect to a local SURPASS hiE 9200 via thecomplete range of subscriber interfaces in-cluding analog lines, ISDN-BA, ISDN-PA, V5.1

    and V5.2.

Subscribers must be connected in the mostefficient way possible. Depending on sub-scriber density and distribution, TDM sub-scriber interfaces can be aggregated direct-ly to the SURPASS hiE 9200 MigrationSwitch, or to the Remote Switching Units(RSU). The RSU provides a capacity of up to

50,000 subscribers with RSU internal traf-fic switched locally to avoid traffic load onthe transport links to the host SURPASS hiE

    SURPASS hiE 9200 Migration Switch

    for Network Streamlining

In a streamlined network the number ofnetwork elements is reduced in favor ofbigger switches with greater performanceand remote access equipment at the locallevel, so switching system processing pow-er should not become a limiting factor. TheSURPASS hiE 9200 Migration Switch coor-dination processor provides a call process-ing capacity of up to 16 million busy hourcall attempts (BHCA), allowing you to buildnetwork nodes of nearly any imaginablesize in every network level.

At the transit level, hierarchies are cut andrestructured into a single level using large, fully intermeshed SURPASS hiE 9200 tran-sit nodes. In smaller networks, hierarchylevels can be reduced even further usingcombined local transit network nodes. Atthe local level, large SURPASS hiE 9200 lo-cal nodes replace several local switchingnodes or, depending on subscriber density

7Figure 4: Network streamlining with SURPASS hiE 9200 Migration Switch

    Creating StreamlinedTDM Networks

and distribution, the subscriber lines willbe connected to Remote Switching Units. The RSU is hosted to a SURPASS hiE 9200Migration Switch and does not need thecore components of a complete switchingsystem, saving floor space and power con-sumption. RSU traffic is switched locally toavoid traffic load on the transport links tothe host.

Streamlining with the SURPASS hiE 9200Migration Switch prepares your networkfor IP services, where subscriber demandmay initially be distributed. If so, use aSURPASS hiE 9200 transit node to controlseveral IP access gateways distributed inyour network while still fulfilling its taskfor the TDM environment.

    What is a Streamlined Network?

    treamlining a network means consolidat-

ng and flattening out the hierarchy by re-ducing the total number of network ele-ments and replacing local switches withemote switching units. This makes it more

efficient in operational and maintenanceost, since lower complexity and fewer net-

work elements means less operational ef-ort. Lifecycle cost is lower due to the re-

duction in floor space and the lower poweronsumption. Applications are availableaster, making possible homogeneous dis-ribution of fewer network elements andhus faster area-wide implementation of

    he same software level.

    f the following applies

s Your voice network has grown by quick-ly providing telephone access to sub-scribers

s A large number of small switches at thelocal level provide subscriber access toyour network

s Different network functions, such astransit switching and local access aredistributed over several network levels

sYour network will soon run out of ca-pacity and will not be able to meet thechallenges arising from new services, increased service usage and the effectsof competition in deregulated markets

    then you should consider networktreamlining.

    Smooth Migration Instead of Disruptive

    Replacement

No matter how you have decided to intro-duce Next Generation Network services toyour TDM network, SURPASS NGN Migration

olution opens up a non-disruptive approach

o go from your working installed TDM baseowards a full-blown Next Generation Net-

work with minimal risk and controlled in-vestment.

Due to the universal scalability of theURPASS Migration Solution, the migrationrom TDM to IP can be accomplished in atep-by-step manner and on demand. You

an decide precisely when and where to takehe next step into IP without having a high

upfront investment with the risk of low ini-ial usage. If you have an installed EWSD

base you can even maximize your invest-ment protection by re-using significantparts of previous and current EWSD equip-ment in the new SURPASS solution, such

s the Digital Line Units with all of theirne cards.

With SURPASS IP you can start offering allhe new revenue-generating IP-based ser-

vices already today, while migrating yournetwork step-by-step to Next GenerationNetwork and fully exploiting the addition-

l operational cost savings of Next Gener-tion Networks.

    Subscriber Migration to IP

The SURPASS IP Direct Access package con-

ained in the SURPASS Next Generation Net-work Migration Solution provides connec-ivity for IP-based subscribers using devicesuch as IP phones and clients, CPGs, IADs,P PBXs etc. with the same full featureet known from the TDM world.

This package is therefore perfectly suited forthe smooth migration of subscribers from

TDM to Next Generation Network, such asenterprise customers who intend to replacetheir old PBX with a new IP PBX or IP Centrex.

To further exploit the cost benefits of anNext Generation Network solution, it alsomakes sense to expand the IP-based NextGeneration Network as close as possible tothe subscribers, reusing the bulk of the ex-pensive investment in TDM access (copperlines plus line cards). This is made possibleby the SURPASS IP Converged Access pack-

age, which is a combination of the SURPASShiE 9200 Migration Switch with powerful

    access gateways.

    Revenue Enhancement

SURPASS IP Applications enables you to in-crease your revenues significantly with in-novative IP-based applications such as IPCentrex. Low upfront investment makes itthe most important ingredient for an eco-nomically viable NGN introduction and yourfuture prosperity.

    Network Migration to IP

SURPASS IP Trunking is the right choice to

consolidate and optimize your switchingnetwork. With it, you can replace the mul-ti-layered TDM transit network with a mod-ern IP-basedNext Generation Network topol-

ogy. So, with this package, you can makeoptimal use of a Next Generation Networkwith its cost-effective flat hierarchies andself-routing capabilities.

The Road to theNext Generation Network

    10/22

    Benefit from an IP Backbone

    Various factors, mainly competitive, are

leading to declining tariffs for basic voiceservices and to increased cost pressure.Voice revenues still account, however, forthe largest part of the revenues and willcontinue to do so for the foreseeable fu-ture. It is thus essential to maintain thisimportant source of revenue, while at thesame time concentrating on reducing op-erational costs to a competitive level.

On the other hand, falling tariffs also driveup PSTN traffic volume, while interconnec-tion to other networks, e.g. to mobile or

other licensed operators, demands highertransit capacity. Traffic growth may also

be caused by extensive use of dial-in Inter-net that cannot be offloaded at the local

network plane. Thus, network resources maybecome overloaded despite little or no sub-scriber line growth. To cope with the traf-fic demand, extension of your transit net-work must be considered. The challengenow is to support all existing voice servic-es while taking advantage of cost-optimizedIP backbone capacity.

    Practical and Cost-Effective Transit Ex-

    tension

The scenario proposed here enables youto pursue a highly cost-efficient cap and

grow migration strategy. This consists typ-ically of capping the investment in existing

TDM switches and deploying the SURPASShiE 9200 Migration Switch and Trunk Gate-

ways for the growth of trunk capacity us-ing an IP transit infrastructure. SURPASSIP Trunking provides conversion of circuit-switched voice streams into packet datastreams (and vice versa) and call-setupand media gateway control through theIP-based network. It also supports the fullset of transit switch features known fromtodays PSTN. In the course of time, addi-tional trunk gateways can be deployed, inorder to migrate all existing trunks intothe IP-based transit infrastructure, for ex-ample when TDM switches become obso-

    lete.

    Enhancing Your Transit Network

URPASS IP Trunking focuses on reduction

of the total cost of ownership through net-work simplification. Firstly, it improves net-work efficiency since traffic overflow is rout-ed over a flat IP infrastructure and no trunkports are needed for the transit extension.n addition, the significantly reduced num-

ber of E1/T1 equivalent connections to bemanaged leads to economic benefits in traf-ic engineering, provisioning, monitoring,

maintenance, inventory and design. Inher-ent IP backbone self-routing capabilities re-eve you of the expense of constantly plan-

ning and load balancing your Trunking net-

work. Secondly, processes can be optimizedwith end-to-end fully integrated manage-ment, reducing operational, administrationnd maintenance costs. Finally, you can now

direct capital expenditures for network in-rastructure for the first time towards a fu-ure-proof IP-based Next Generation Net-

work architecture in order to also tapnew revenue streams with IP applications.

Figure 6 compares the total costs associat-ed with extending your transit network with

TDM equipment with those of deployingSURPASS IP Trunking. For this purpose, a rep-

resentative mid-sized operator network ismodeled, based on realistic and rather con-servative assumptions. For instance, thecosts of introduction of a new technology(e.g. training), as well as a fixed amountfor base operational expenses inherent toeach technology are included in order toprovide a fair comparison.

Furthermore, if the trunking network is ex-tended with TDM, it is assumed that the

network architecture, i.e. the number ofnetwork hierarchies and their complexity, stays the same. It is also anticipated thatimplementation of SURPASS IP Trunkingconsolidates this part of the network down

to one level. In such a scenario, trafficgrowth is mainly driven by an increase in

calls, the greater amount of interconnec-tion traffic to be routed and the extensiveuse of dial-in Internet. However the trafficgrowth assumed is kept relatively low inorder to provide a realistic analysis.

The most evident benefit shown by the busi-

ness case is the fast return on investmentwith a Net Present Value (NPV) breakevenof 2.5 years. The crucial factors here are re-duced capital expenditures and recurringoperational savings of 60%, mainly due tothe dramatic reduction of the complex TDM-

based architecture. These counterbalancethe SURPASS IP Trunking initial investmentand introduction costs. Higher traffic growth,

of course, further improves the businesscase.

    Offering Your Customers More

Today, for most carriers, voice services are

still the major source of revenue. But at thesame time, the complex voice network struc-

ture and outdated equipment lead to highoperational expenditures and growing in-flexibility, thus preventing the introductionof new revenue generating services. The operational benefits are tremendous SURPASS IP Converged Access enables

he operator to reduce switching-relevantoperating expenses in three main areas:

s Overall reduction of the number ofmanaged network elements by replac-ing local switches with remotely con-trolled access gateways, thus loweringthe costs of operational and adminis-trative processes. This optimization es-pecially allows you to implement newvalue-added applications much fasterand more cost-efficiently.

s In the self-routing network world of

IP technology, planning and operationcosts for trunks are dramatically reduced. With SURPASS IP Converged Access, boththe local and transit network can be re-placed, completely eliminating operat-ing expenses related to TDM Trunking.

s Power and space savings are obtainedwith the SURPASS Media Gateways forAccess and SURPASS Access Gatewaysdue to latest technology that minimizesfootprint and reduces power consump-tion.

Conclusive findings from business case stud-es, conducted jointly with operators plan-ning to migrate their TDM networks to anP-based architecture revealed that the de-

ployment of SURPASS IP Converged Accessan reduce switching network operatingxpenditure by up to 60%. But there is more:

URPASS IP Converged Access achieves short

payback times, offering optimization of cap-tal expenditure right from the start.

    New Business Opportunities with

    SURPASS IP Direct Access

Customers show a growing demand forbroadband Internet access. In order tohandle the emerging data traffic, carriersbuild up or expand their IP networks. Butwhy should they use these networks fordata services only? As an enhancement, lo-cal voice operators may offer multiple linetelephony to all existing and new broadband

access users. SURPASS IP Direct Access fromSiemens allows carrier-class and cost-effec-tive provisioning of voice and next genera-tion services to packet-based subscriber lines

    or customer premises equipment. The

tremendous economic benefits are basedon a number of key business drivers.SURPASS IP Direct Access:

s Allows you to offer additional voice ser-vices to all broadband users based on ex-isting broadband data access, thus saving

access network costs and maximizing thepotential for fast market penetration.

s Allows you to offer multiple voice linesto each subscriber, a highly valuable op-

tion both to increase the average rev-enue per voice customer and to differ-entiate from competition in the voicetelephony market.

s Opens the door to generate new rev-enues through offering new services, such as SURPASS IP CENTREX or third-party applications from our we SURPASSpartner program.

Our business case study shows that invest-ing into SURPASS IP Direct Access leads toconsiderable reduction of the network To-

tal Cost of Ownership (TCO) compared toa TDM solution while enabling new reve-nue generating opportunities. Dependenton the particular network scenario, the in-vestment in SURPASS IP Direct Access mayprovide positive returns in less than twoyears (see Figure 8).
