PYC Kant Katch Me never had the chance to see his name challenged on Saturday night at Remington

Park. The star from the Heritage Place Futurity trials in early May, when he won his trial by an astounding three lengths, became fractious in the starting gate

seconds before the fi eld was released and was scratched. His poor fortune opened the door for the remaining 2-year-olds and BP Cartels Alibi seized the opportu-nity.

Owned by Raymundo Villarreal, Jr. of Mission, Texas, and trained by Trey Wood,

BP Cartels Alibi managed to out-duel El Duero over the fi nal 100 yards to score by a head in the Grade, $1,048,560 Heritage Place Futurity. Ricky Ramirez managed

to put his colt through a small opening between rivals at the start to move on to victory.

“We got away well but we were in tight but I managed to get him through,” Ramirez said afterwards in the winner’s circle of getting away between Thequeenhasgonenuts to his inside and Sum Better Stuff to his outside. “It was a small

opening but in a million-dollar race we had to go for it. He’s not the best in getting away from the gate but he got away well enough.”

Wood gave plenty of credit to his staff at Rem-ington Park, including his assistant Paul Leal, for hav-ing the winner on top of his game for the richest race in

his young career. “Paul Leal, he did a heckuva job with him. If it wasn’t for him, BP Cartels Alibi would not have done it tonight.”

BP Cartels Alibi hit the fi nish in :17.58 seconds over the fast track at odds of 11-1. El Duero had the much cleaner start and run but could not hold off the rally of the winner. Sum Better Stuff was a neck behind the runner-up in third. Dash For Coronas, winner of the Oklahoma Futurity in March here, was the beaten 6-5 wagering favorite and fi nished fourth.

PYC Kant Katch Me was the heavy wagering choice as the fi eld went to the starting gate initially but lost that stat-ure once he acted up and sat down in the gate. The actions resulted in being scratched on advice of the Remington Park attending veterinarian.

BP Cartels Alibi paid $24.80 to win, $10.80 to place and $6.20 to show. El Duero returned $4.80 to place and

$3.40 to show. Sum Better Stuff paid $7.40 to show.

Bred in Oklahoma by Bill Price of Thackerville, Okla., BP Cartels Alibi is a 2-year-old colt by Corona Cartel from the Chicks Beduino mare My Ladys Alibi. The Heritage Place Futurity score was his second career victory to go along with his trial win to qualify for the race on May 4. The winner’s check of $440,398 gives BP Cartels Alibi $450,900 in his very young career.

BP Cartels Alibi’s win in the Heritage Place Futurity gave all his connections their fi rst career score in the rich race.

Jockey Roy Brooks, 70, rides Priceless Feature to Derby win

The ageless wonder-boy of jockeys, 70-year-old Roy Brooks, was tabbed by trainer Eddie Willis to take one of his qualifi ers in the Grade 2, $247,800 Heritage Place Derby. The move to put him aboard Priceless Feature paid off as Brooks rode the gelding to a come-from-behind win, beating Texasindependence-gal by a head.

A resident of Blanchard, Okla., Brooks has ridden spar-ingly in 2012 with just fi ve mounts overall. His stingy approach worked well Satur-day night as he scored his fi rst win of the season and posted

another graded triumph in the process. It was a second con-secutive win in the Heritage Place Derby for Brooks who won in 2011 aboard Capo De Capi, also trained by Willis.

“He left much better today than he did in his trial,” Brooks noted. “I knew we won when we hit the fi nish. I’ve said that I might retire once I won a big race at 70 but I may have to come back to win this again next year.”

Willis never doubted his jockey, regardless of age. “It’s amazing. Roy is a money rider,

he always has been and always will be. That’s why I like to use him.”

Priceless Feature crossed the fi nish line in :19.62 seconds at 9-1 odds, paying $21 to win, $10.40 to place and $6 to show. Texasindependencegal paid $6.60 to place and $4.60 to show. BPs Jumpin Frisco paid $3.40 to show as the beaten 8-5 wagering favorite.

Owned by Ed Melzer of Edmond, Okla., Priceless Feature was bred in Oklahoma by Sam Green. The 3-year-old is a gelding by Feature Mr Jess from the Corona Cartel mare

Southern Price. The Heritage Place Derby win is the sixth from 13 career starts for Price-less Feature with all six wins taking place at Remington Park. The winner’s share of the derby, $104,076, moved his lifetime earnings to $200,896.

Priceless Feature gave Wil-lis his fourth career Heritage Place Derby win. It was the second win in the race for both Melzer and Brooks.

Ubuyillfl y wins top Paint/Appaloosa Futurity

The Grade 1, $240,760 Speedhorse/Graham Paint &

Appaloosa Futurity, the riches race for the breeds during the Remington Park season, went to top qualifi er Ubuyillfl y.

Owned by Mary Hainline of Noble, Okla. and trained by Eddie Willis, Jimmy Brooks had the riding assignment on the 2-year-old Paint gelding who won by a neck after taking the lead midway through the 350-yards. Judys Miss Banks rallied inside of the winner to just miss while gaining. Super Glide Harley was another head behind for third-place.

The 7-5 wagering favorite, Ubuyillfl y crossed the fi nish in :17.873 after a less than brilliant start. “He didn’t really get away from there, running,” Brooks noted. “About halfway down he got going.”

The victory for Ubuyillfl y makes him the only Paint eligible to win the inaugural Speedhorse Triple Crown. The fi nal two legs of the series take place with the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity in August at Fair Meadows in Tulsa, Okla., followed by the Lone Star Park/Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity in Grand Prairie, Texas in Novem-ber.

A son of Country Quick Dash from the Cash Legacy (qh) mare Strafi ng Run (qh), Ubuyillfl y was bred in Kansas by Nikki Low Schwerdfeger. The third win from four starts during the Remington Park season was worth $91,493 for Ubuyillfl y, moving his overall total to $114,805.

Grade 2, $50,900 Junos Request Stakes

Older fi llies and mares were featured on the under-card Saturday in the 400-yard Junos Request Stakes, won by Thisfeatureisspecial who pulled clear to win by a half-length in :19.733 seconds.

Owned by Mauro Za-borowsky of Sao Paulo, Brazil and trained by Paul Jones, Thisfeatureisspecial was rid-den by Cody Jensen. Pulling away over the fi nal 200 yards, the winner pulled a slight upset over the 6-5 wagering favorite Fredaville who was second. The Dashing Attitude was another half-length back in third.

Thisfeatureisspecial paid $12.60 to win, $4.20 to place and $3.80 to show. Fredaville paid $2.80 to place and $3 to show. The Dashing Attitude paid $5.80 to show.

Bred in Louisiana by J.E., D.C. and C.T. Jumonville. A 5-year-old mare by Feature Mr Jess from the Special Ef-fort mare This Girl Is Special, Thisfeatureisspecial won her fi fth race from 19 career starts. She is a perfect two-for-two at Remington Park with both victories this season. The fi rst-place Junos Request check of $30,000 boosted the career earnings of Thisfeatureisspe-cial to $78,582.

The Junos Request is named after the 1992 Ameri-can Quarter Horse Association Champion Aged mare who also won many races at Rem-ington Park in the early years, including the Remington Park Championship the same year.

$75,00 Heritage Place Juvenile

Talented 2-year-olds who did not qualify for the $1M Heritage Place Futurity had their stakes opportunity in the Heritage Place Juvenile, won by Generating Cash with a solid run from the starting gate to the fi nish in :17.643 seconds.

Owned by EJ Partnership of Austin, Texas, and trained by Ed Hardy, Generating Cash was ridden by Stormy Smith. The win was the fi rst career score for the gray who was second, three lengths behind, the sharp PYC Kant Katch Me in his qualifying trial for the Heritage Place Futurity.

Away at 8-1 odds, Gen-erating Cash paid $18.60 to win, $10 to place and $4.40 to show. Wild And Game was sec-ond, paying $9.60 to place and $6.40 to show. Nellie Delaney was third and paid $11.20 to show.

JB James was the beaten 6-5 wagering favorite, fi nish-ing fi fth.

A son of Wave Carver from

the Streakin Six mare Wasting No Time, Generating Cash was bred in Texas by Bob and Jerry

Gaston. The victory was worth $21,803 for the gray to push his total to $28,161.

World champ overcomes very rough start to cruise in Remington Park ChampionshipMay 27, 2012 • Remington Park, Oklahoma City, OK

The Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Invitational Champion-

ship featured a dozen older horses with highly-successful resumes. Unfortunately for 11 of the contestants, one of the runners was American Quar-ter Horse Association World Champion Cold Cash 123. The 4-year-old overcame another brutal start, then rolled to an easy three-quarter-length vic-tory in the 440-yard classic.

Owned and bred by T. Bill Stables of Clare, Mich. and trained by Dwayne ‘Sleepy’ Gilbreath, Cold Cash 123 was ridden by Roy Baldillez. The World Champ has a knack for awkward starts on his own accord. However, in the Rem-ington Park Championship, he endured a physical under-taking due to rivals on either side collapsing on him at the beginning.

“He stood really well today,” Baldillez remarked. “He may have gotten a little too relaxed and he got bumped pretty hard. He’s a remarkable horse. He loves to run and he’s a great horse.”

Streakin Down and A Toss Up made contact with Cold Cash 123 in the opening strides. The result was Cold Cash 123 losing his back-end, going nearly sideways before recovering to get into stride. Despite the fi rst yards, Cold Cash 123 quickly moved to the lead and had the advantage by the halfway mark before open-ing up, well within himself at the end. He stopped the clock in :21.267 seconds over a fast track.

Gilbreath has had many

star horses under his care over the years, including Refrig-erator in the early 1990s. He places Cold Cash 123 on the highest level of those he’s been involved with in his career. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have some good horses but very few are great horses. This is a great horse.”

JLS Mr Bigtime was second, a head better than Llano Teller. Mr Truly Uno was another neck behind in fourth position.

The even-money wagering favorite, Cold Cash 123 paid $4 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.80 to show. JLS MR Bigtime paid $12 to place and $5 to show. Llano Teller returned $4.40 to show.

The Remington Park Championship was the 11th win from 16 career starts for Cold Cash 123 and his second locally, joining his score in the Leo Stakes in March. The win-ner’s share of $150,000 moved the career total for Cold Cash 123 to $1,190,281.

Bred in Michigan by his owner, Cold Cash 123 is a 4-year-old gelding by Oak Tree Special from the Takin On The Cash mare Hot Cash 123. The victory was the fi rst in the Remington Park Championship for T. Bill Stables and Gilbreath. Baldillez posted his second win in the race to go along with his 1993 win aboard Easily A Rogue.

By virtue of his win in the Remington Park Champion-ship, Cold Cash 123 has earned a berth into the $750,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos Race Course in south-ern California in December.

Owned and bred in Oklahoma by Desiree Buck of Ringling, Okla., and trained by Kasey Willis, LD Flashback was ridden by Stormy Smith to a neck victory. The 2-year-old gelding handled 330 yards in :16.997 seconds.

Away at 9-1 odds, LD Flashback paid $20.40 to win, $10.40 to place and $6.40 to show. Mean Little Sis was sec-ond and paid $12.80 to place and $7.20 to show. Nothing-sweetaboutme was third and paid $4.20 to show.

The win was the third straight in four starts this sea-son for LD Flashback, a gelding by SF Royal Quick Flash from

By Robert Geller

Just over a month into the new season at Emerald Downs, the infl u-ence of owner Jody Peetz appears

to be as strong as ever. Racing under the One Horse Will Do Corporation, her team of horses has continued on from where it left off — in the winner’s circle.

A world-record performance by Hol-lywood Harbor, back-to-back successes by Perfect Pie and an off -the-bench score by Talk to My Lawyer came early, maintaining the high bar that had been set.

The 2011 season ended in triumph when lightly raced fi lly Talk to My Lawyer held off the boys to land Jody one of her biggest stakes wins to date, the $65,000 Gottstein Futurity, the state’s premier 2-year-old classic. Her victory helped give trainer Chris Stenslie the edge over Tom Wenzel for the end-of-year training achievement award after both registered banner meets.

The dam of Talk to My Lawyer, Infernal McGoon had been a star herself. In 2003, she won the $100,000 Emerald Breeders Cup Distaff on Longacres Mile Day en route to the $50,000 Belle Roberts Stakes one month later. They are fond memories for Jody, who owned no more than fi ve horses at the time.

Washington Cup Day 2004 almost produced a similar success when Dark In-tent, whom she part-owned with the late Chuck Potter, lost by a nose as the longest shot on the board to odds-on favorite De-mon Warlock in the $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic in a nail-biting photo.

Today, Jody has 18 racehorses, all with trainer Chris Stenslie – fi ve 2-year-olds, fi ve 3-year-olds and eight older horses – and though she never envi-sioned owning this many, her prominence is a blessing for the industry here in the Northwest. The expansion, fueled by a deep underlying respect for the horse, refl ects a solid fi nancial investment for Jody. But the measure of its reward goes well beyond any dollar amounts. In spite of coming off of her best season yet,

Jody retains realistic expectations.

“It’s a passion. That’s what it is for me, and it is a sport. I would like to say it is a business, but if I can pay my bills, I’m really happy. I can’t look at it as a busi-ness because when a horse gets claimed off me, I don’t say good riddance. I worry about what hap-pens to the horse, as I care about where it ends up in its second career — after racing.”

The fact is that on May 6, Jody lost her favorite horse, Showme Yourfriends, to a claim. The 50-1 upset winner of last sea-son’s $50,000 Auburn Handicap was com-ing off a cozy fi rst-up win as a 4-year-old when entered back at the same $20,000 level. Clearly the high claiming tag did not deter interest and, after his hard-fought second-place fi nish second out, Showme Yourfriends was headed out of her barn.

“That one really hurts because now I have a horse that I really like and is running well and is now with trainer Tim McCanna.”

It is never a case of out-of-sight, out-of-mind for Jody. She remains emotionally invested in her horses, even those who had left to campaign in other parts of the country.

“I cannot stand to see them end up in the bush leagues. I have had so many horses back that you go, oh my god. Delinquinator, I got back from Canada. Boomslang, he’d been back at Mountaineer. You see these horses and you just cringe, and it takes you a while to get them back into shape.”

Horse welfare is of prime importance to her. A graduate of Meredith Manor in the late

‘90s, a nationally accredited Equestrian Ca-reer College, Jody has never taken horse care for granted.

“It gave me just a really good solid basis and for riding, too. I’d ridden before but the nine month course gave me a real appreciation for how much hard work goes into the overall care of the horse and that it’s a seven day a week deal.”

Not surprisingly, Jody settled on a trainer in Chris Stenslie who gets on her own horses in morning track-work. Together with the highly accomplished assistant trainer Carol Hubbard, the barn is known for its hands-on philosophy and the results speak for themselves.

“That’s the key to her success. It’s because Chris knows what’s going on with each horse. She can tell you if this horse is sound, unsound, how it’s feeling today. I mean, she is one of the few trainers who

for sake

can tell you how she mixes her own feed for each horse – the grooms don’t do it, she does. She knows if each horse has eaten up the night before. I don’t know how many trainers really take an interest in that, they listen to their assistant but she’s so hands-on that way, and just being able to ride the horses too gives her an idea of their capabilities.”

Having good stock to work with is the other important part of the equation, and Jody has a keen eye for a horse. Jody takes an active role in spotting potential and goes out of her way to find it. Athleticism is key on her list of attributes that must be there before any com-mitment to invest is made.

“Basically, they just have to look like an athlete and you do have to look at those pedigree pages. If there’s nothing under the dam, you go, hmmm, and you think twice, but first you look at the horse and see if it looks like an athlete.

“What I’ve tried to do the past couple of years is go to the different farms and look at these yearlings before they go through the sales. And because of our economy, ev-erybody has been really good about showing their yearlings, like putting them in the round pen so you can actually see them trot and canter because when you’re at a sale, all you get to do is see those horses walk. So if you watch them on the farms, you can get a better idea of how the horse has been raised, you can see them move a little better even if they’re out in the pasture. But then again, there’s no guarantee you’re go-ing to get a champion. That’s just not the way it works.”

The method is bringing results. Her win percentages from the 2011 meet are far better than they read on paper since One Horse Will Do Cor-poration partners with other owners, namely Tina and Scott

Saxwold, Tony Loften and Chris Stenslie herself in addition to sole ownership, splitting the stats several ways. Will This One Do Stable is also synony-mous with Jody Peetz. Which-ever way you slice and dice it, in 2011, the figures were through the roof, with in-the-money strike rates of the dif-ferent ownership registrations ranging from 67 percent to 100 percent, netting her a total of 14 wins. Her current combined tally of five wins to date for 2012 would place her second in the ownership standings.

The world-record-setting performance of Hollywood Harbor stood out amongst those wins. The 5-year-old son of Harbor the Gold covered the 5-1/2 furlongs in 1.00.87 on April 22, displaying the bril-liance that has remained a hall-mark of his abbreviated career ever since his 2-year-old days when voted the top juvenile on the grounds. His tender feet have always been some cause for concern.

A subsequent third-place finish in the $50,000 Governor’s Handicap behind Winning Machine just under a month later was bittersweet. High expectations were virtual-ly dashed from the start when Hollywood Harbor dwelt by a good length or more as the gates opened. Despite former success in the wet, he never seemed comfortable that day on the rain-affected surface — a fact confirmed by his regular rider, Jose Zunino — drifting out the length of the stretch.

Nevertheless, Hollywood Harbor did win, albeit nar-rowly, the battle of the giants, prevailing by a head-bob over the top billed Noosa Beach, who wound up fourth. ‘Woody’ is too talented to not give him the benefit of the doubt, and once again, he had paid his way. His show effort was not dissimilar from that of Te-quila Gold, who ran third in last

year’s Governor’s Handicap, a horse that coincidentally Jody had originally hoped to buy out of the sales.

“In fact when we were bidding on Hollywood Harbor, I tell you, the first horse that went through was Tequila Gold, and I wanted that one before I wanted Hollywood Harbor. But we ended up getting Hollywood Harbor, so you just don’t know, you know what I mean?”

Jody has been in the game long enough to expect the unexpected. She remains grateful for the successes and has learned to take the losses in her stride.

“Thankyouwilldo, she had fabulous workout times, but then would get in a race and end up last; a morning glory-type horse. I had another horse, Showtime at Nine. I think we paid $82,000 for him or $85,000, a good Jump Start, a good-looking dude. He could not run a jump. He won a race

at a mile for $4,000 claiming and I said I am not going to let this horse get claimed off of me because he was such a cool horse so I sold him immediate-ly to a person that is retraining him as a hunter.”

“Another horse, Remem-bermenow, a Tiznow filly that I bought for $50,000 back at the Keeneland Sale — bred by Brookdale Farm – she ended up cracking both of her pas-terns in a workout. Case closed. And she got sold back at the Keeneland Breeding Sale for $2,500 in January this year.”

Ownership can be a double-edged sword if you go into it with blinkers on. For those dabbling with the idea of getting involved, Jody offers some words of advice.

“If you really are serious, join one of the syndicates. You’ll have a good time and you’ll meet a lot of people, but see if you can handle the losses because you’re going to lose more than you’re going to win.

You’ve got be a good loser and you’ve got to be able to go up to the winner and say, Congratulations, good for you.”

With her budding crop of 2-year-olds waiting in the wings — two by Lawyer Ron — Jody is already on tenterhooks fol-lowing their progress as they are prepared for debut runs later in the season.

“I am really excited about them so I’ll keep my fingers crossed on those.”

Her excitement is contagious. In many ways, Jody is the perfect owner for the modern era. She trusts her instincts, remains on the pulse of what is going on in the industry, and is a true flag-bearer for putting the horse first, a hallmark of her

all-female team of Chris and Carol. “I like to look at someone like Maggie

Moss who’s really out there. I mean she’s kind of a role model, having done so well. She looks at racing as a business, but also cares about her horses, and I think that that’s really cool. There are more women in the business than people think, and I believe women have a different perspec-tive on the horses too, treating them differently from the guys, a little more sympathetic, a little more empathetic.”

Come on guys. Get with it — for Peetz sake!

The accomplishments of Charmin Chief Corona came under the watchful eye of trainer Cindi Keeton who admired the calm demeanor of the filly in the barn, but saw her fire and determina-tion when she entered the starting gate.

“She’s turned into a beautiful horse,” said Pat Kurz, who accepted the Sam Hous-ton Derby trophy with her husband, Gary. “My husband was the one who wanted to breed to Chief Corona and he came through for us. Cindi is a beautiful person inside and out and we are so happy for her.”

Francisco Raul Ramirez, Jr. had the mount in three of her four starts; James Flores rode her in trials for the Adequan Derby on May 5.

She returned to the win-

ner’s circle on May 5, setting the fastest qualifying time in trials for the $54,450 Adequan Texas Derby Challenge. In the finals on May 19, she stum-bled to her knees when the gates opened and finished seventh to A Game Dame.

Fortunately, she came out of the race in good shape and Keeton reports that Char-min Chief Corona has been shipped back to the Kurz’s farm in Somerset, Texas.

“She is going to get some rest and will likely return for the Dash for Cash Derby trials at Lone Star Park,” said her trainer.

Kurz has been a longtime supporter of Texas racing. He has bred some exceptional stakes winners including Gols Honey Money Pop, Jakes Charmin Jody and Shake Em Special Pop.

Judd Kearl wins fifthHouston training title

Judd Kearl continues his domination at Sam Houston Race Park, winning 35 races from 133 starts to clinch his fifth leading trainer title. Kearl’s runners hit the board at a rate of 55.6 percent, with claiming, allowance and trial victories. He earned purses of $213,977 throughout the 27-day meet. His lone stakes winner was Nowurtalkin who captured the $50,000 Sam Houston Classic (Grade 2) on May 5 and will run May 27 in the $250,000 Remington Park Invitational.

Born in Utah, Kearl now calls Madisonville, Texas home and continues to be an ardent supporter of Texas racing. He won his first Sam Houston training title in 2006, and topped all conditioners

in 2007, 2010 and 2011. This year, Kearl also ran horses Remington Park and has a string at Delta Downs as well.

“I could not have this success without the support of my owners and an excel-lent staff of assistants and grooms,” said Kearl. “I don’t have to worry about my horses at Remington Park and Delta Downs; I know they are taken care of.”

The 37-year-old condi-tioner and veteran jockey Rodrigo Vallejo have forged a solid union over the past five years.

“Our relationship is more than trainer and jockey,” adds Kearl. “We are friends and I trust him completely.”

Kearl is currently the 14th-ranked trainer in the national AQHA standings. He will travel to Remington Park this weekend as he has quali-

fied three juveniles for the $1.1 million Heritage Place Futurity (Grade 1) on Satur-day, May 26.

Cindi Keeton enjoyed a successful debut at Sam Houston Race Park, finishing second with 13 wins. Brian Stroud was third, saddling 11 winners and Guy Hopkins, Jorge Haddad and Cleto Mar-tinez, Jr. each had 10 wins.

Rodrigo Vallejo earns third leading riding title

Jockey Rodrigo Vallejo picked up his third leading rider title at Sam Houston Race Park. He won his first title in 2008 in a tie with Gaspar Garcia and his second in 2010. As the first call rider for leading trainer Judd Kearl, Vallejo won 38 of his 136 starts as well as 26 seconds and 15 third-place finishes.

The 46-year-old jockey was born in Jalisco, Mexico and has been one of the top riders in Texas, with solid showings in Louisiana and Oklahoma as well. His 2012 stakes wins here included the $50,000 Sam Houston Classic (Grade 2) aboard Nowurtalkin for Kearl and Zoomin Moon, for trainer Gary Jacobs in the $15,645 Colors of Houston Futurity (Grade 2).

“I want to thank Judd Kearl and other trainers for putting me on very good horses,” said Vallejo. “Judd and I have been a team for the last seven years. We may not speak the same language, but we have always com-municated perfectly. This has been one of my best meets.”

Last year’s leading rider, Luis Vivanco finished sec-

ond with 32 wins and Luis Ramirez was third with 24 victories.

Vallejo has a rich history at Sam Houston Race Park. He is the only four-time win-ner of the Sam Houston Futu-rity and was the regular rider of Azoom, who was honored as the 2004 Sam Houston Horse of the Meet as well as AQHA Champion 2-Year-Old Colt/Gelding. Vallejo will divide his time between Ruidoso Downs and Retama Park over the summer.

Filimon Saucedo and A.D. Maddox tie as top owners

The battle for owner of the meet went the distance with A.D. Maddox having sole possession until the sixth race of the May 19 closing

day card. Filimon Saucedo’s Executive Tone won a 250-yard allowance to vault him into a tie for leading owner with Maddox with seven wins each.

This was the first owner title at Sam Houston Race Park for Saucedo, whose horses are trained by his son, Juan. Maddox has captured three previous titles; the first came in 2005, another in 2007 and he tied with Jorge Haddad in 2009. His top highlight of the 2012 Sam Houston Race Park meet was a victory by CC Miss Yin You in one of the three divisions of the 110-yard $15,000 Texas Twister Stakes. The 5-year-old mare is trained by James Gerhards.

Jerry Windham and Elea-zar Martinez, Sr. were tied for second with 5 wins.

MAY 28, 2012Canterbury Park, Shakopee, MNSanto Gato wins Honor the Hero Express; Hollywood Trickster wins Skip Zimmerman Stakes

A crafty ride by a veteran jockey led to victory for Santo Gato in the $35,000 Honor the Hero Express on Monday at Canterbury Park. Bobby Walker Jr., the 51-year-old winner of more than 2,900 races, waited patiently for front-runner No Peace At All to tire before asking Santo Gato for run in the stretch. The 4-year-old Kentucky-bred owned by Merrill Scherer, Dan Lynch and Ken Sentel and trained by Gary Scherer responded, going on to win by 1 1/4 lengths, covering fi ve furlongs on the fast main track in 57 and 1/5 seconds.

“I knew he would break hard but didn’t need the front,” Walker said. “I just took back and fi gured the speed would come back to me.” Santo Gato was in control in mid-stretch, holding off Richmond and defending Honor the Hero champion Humble Smarty. “It was pretty much over at the eighth pole,” Walker said.

The Honor the Hero Ex-press was originally scheduled to be run on the turf but heavy rains in the Shakopee area caused racing offi cials to trans-fer the race to the main track. Santo Gato returned $11.80.

Hollywood Trickster won the $18,950 Skip Zimmer-man Stakes for trainer Ed Ross Hardy and owner Christine Hovey.

Derek Bell rode the winner who paid $13.60. Final time for the 350 yards was 17.903 seconds.

Betfair Hollywood Park, Inglewood, CABelle Royale surges late to win Gamely; Roman Threat leads throughout in L.A. Handicap

Trainer Simon Callaghan and jockey Joel Rosario made it consecutive wins in the $250,000 Gamely Stakes Mon-day at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Twelve months after Dubawi Heights won the Spring/Summer meet’s fi rst Grade I, Callaghan and Rosario repeated with Belle Royale, who fi nished with a fl ourish to defeat Quiet Oasis, Capital Plan and fi ve others.

The 2-1 second choice in her graded debut, the 4-year-old Irish bred ran the 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.84. Owned by Michael Tabor, the daughter of former Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Val Royal and the Brief Truce mare Kahyasi Moll won for the 10th time in 26 starts.

Now 2-for-2 in the United States – she won the Ameri-can Beauty April 7 at Santa Anita – Belle Royale has earned $358,231.

Callaghan became the fi rst trainer to win the Gamely in consecutive years since the late Bobby Frankel won with Citronnade in 2007 followed by Precious Kitten in 2008.

Meanwhile, Rosario was

R A C E R E C A P Sthe fi rst rider to go back-to-back since Kent Desormeaux – Possibly Perfect for Frankel in 1995 and Auriette for Gary Jones a year later.

In her initial try at nine fur-longs, Belle Royale was outrun early while Quiet Oasis, Wild Mia and Capital Plan disputed the pace, saved ground into the stretch, found room to split Wild Mia and City to City in the stretch and was up to win by a half-length.

“I wouldn’t say I gave up on the turn (Belle Royale had only one rival beat after six fur-longs) because this fi lly really fi nishes,’’ said Callaghan. “But the nature of this course has been very speed favoring all meet. Because of that, our plan was to be forward a little more, maybe fourth.

“But she’s just one of those fi llies that drops herself in and relaxes. She’s got an unbelievable turn of foot and that is a very big weapon. The big thing with her is she loves fi rm ground. She’s just very, very honest. She’s one of those fi llies who always gives 100 percent and she’s also got a lot of class. I’m very lucky to train a fi lly as good as this.’’

Callaghan said Belle Royale would be pointed to the $750,000, Grade I Beverly D. Stakes Aug. 18 at Arlington Park, a race in which Dubawi Heights fi nished second in 2011.

“She came home fast, but she was doing it easy,’’ said Ro-sario. “She just keeps it going. That’s just the way she runs. The last quarter of a mile she really turns it on.

“I think she’s a really nice fi lly. I don’t see any reason she won’t go longer – a mile and a quarter or a mile and three-eighths.’’

Seeking her second stakes win of the meet after taking the Grade 3 Wilshire Handicap

April 29, Quiet Oasis had the advantage coming to the wire, but couldn’t quite stay for own-ers J. Paul and Zillah Reddam and jockey Mario Gutierrez.

In her fi rst attempt beyond one mile, Quiet Oasis fi nished a half-length in front of fellow 6-1 shot Capital Plan. She paid $6.60 and $4.60 while Capital Plan returned $5.20 to show.

Ben Cecil, the trainer of the runner-up, said she could make her next start in the Grade II, $150,000 Royal Heroine Mile July 7.

“She ran really well, but what can you do?’’ he said. “A mile and an eighth might be her limit, but we’ll see. It’s nice to be Grade I placed, but it would be nicer to win it.’’

City to City wound up fourth ahead of Cambina, 2-1 favorite Nereid, Wild Mia and Bauble Queen.

In the race immediately prior to the Gamely, Roman Threat went gate-to-wire for his second victory in three starts.

A 4-year-old gelded son of Roman Ruler and the Fly-ing Chevron mare Shameful, the 9-10 favorite is owned by breeders Patti and Hal J. Earn-hardt III. Roman Threat quickly established command over 6-1 shot Centralinteligence and those two didn’t change posi-tions the entire journey.

A meet high fi fth stakes victory enabled Hall of Fame trainer Baff ert to reach a Bet-fair Hollywood Park milestone. He has 84 local stakes wins, moving him into a tie with D. Wayne Lukas for fi fth on the all-time list. Charlie Whitting-ham leads with 222.

In providing both Baff ert and jockey Rafael Bejarano their fi rst Los Angeles win, Roman Threat, who has earned $123,600, completed the six furlongs in 1:08.57. He paid $3.80, $2.60 and $2.10 for the

1 ¼ length score. “He’s fast,’’ said assistant

trainer Mike Marlow. “Rafael said he had so much horse that even in the stretch he didn’t really have to get into him.

“He had a lot of little things wrong when he was two and three. We had to (geld) him because he was tough to handle and wasn’t paying attention to his train-ing.’’

Making only his second start in graded company, Centralinteligence wound up 1 ½ lengths clear of defending champion Camp Victory and returned $5.20 and $3.40. The show price on Camp Victory, whose victory in 2011 came due to the disqualifi cation of Amazombie, was $3.

In his initial outing as a 7-year-old, Rail Trip, the winner of the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup, fi nished willingly for fourth. It was the fi rst race in California for the Jump Start gelding since he was second as the 2-5 favorite in the 2010 Gold Cup.

Ron Ellis, who trains both Centralinteligence and Rail Trip, was happy with the per-formance of both geldings.

“(Centralinteligence) gave (the winner) a run,’’ he said. “That time on this track is smoking. In his second start, (Roman Threat) made Am-azombie run all out and that’s a pretty good horse for crying out loud. Everything worked out well. He just wasn’t good enough.

“I’m giddy at Rail Trip’s performance. For not having sprinted in four years and the winner getting an easy fi rst quarter mile, I thought it was just awesome. (Jockey) Jose (Valdivia, Jr.) said he was going real smooth. With that race un-der his belt, we’ll probably go seven furlongs the next time

and then stretch him out.’’Completing the order

of fi nish were M One Rifl e, Sway Away and Dancing in Silks, who has lost 11 in a row since his upset win in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The 7-year-old was eased in the fi nal eighth of a mile while more than 28 lengths behind the winner.

Earlier in the afternoon, apprentice jockey Vinnie Bednar, 20, gained his fi rst two victories at Betfair Hollywood Park, winning the fourth with 5-1 shot Miles Long Gone and the sixth with 7-1 outsider Charlie’sboywins.

A great nephew of the late trainer Lou Carno, Bednar, who had previously ridden at Turf Paradise, was 0-for18 at the Spring/Summer meet before his Monday double.

Positive Response crossed the wire fi rst in the $100,000 Berkeley Handicap at Golden Gate Fields Monday but it was runner-up Awesome Gem who was ultimately declared the winner of the Grade 3 stakes for older horses.

Positive Response defeat-ed Awesome Gem by three-quarters of a length in the

1 1/16-mile contest but was disqualifi ed from fi rst and placed fourth by the stewards for interfering with fourth-place fi nisher Anthony’s Cross in deep stretch.

Anthony’s Cross was moved up to third and Hudson Landing, the original third-place fi nisher, was moved up to second as a result of the disqualifi cation.

While digging in down the stretch, Positive Response drifted in and caused Anthony’s Cross to have to check. Anthony’s Cross was beaten a neck for third by Hud-son Landing.

“He drifted out in the stretch so I switched the stick to my right hand and he came in a little,” said Couton. “I drifted in a little bit but I don’t know if I cost anyone a better placing. I think he was the best horse in the fi eld. It’s just bad luck.”

Jockey Aaron Gryder rode Awesome Gem, who ran a big race considering he rallied from last into very soft frac-tions (:50.78 for the half-mile and 1:15.09 for six furlongs) and missed by less than a length.

“The pace was slow but I didn’t want to take him out of his game,” said Gryder. “Rather than jam him up there, I decided to let him get into his stride and save ground. The pace was a lot to overcome but he’s a very classy horse and showed it today.”

Gryder shifted Awesome

Gem to the outside in the stretch and found clear sailing.

“I was very fortunate,” said Gryder. “There was a lot of bumping and squeezing going on in front of me in the stretch but we were able to avoid it. He worked himself out a trip.”

Awesome Gem, trained by Craig Dollase, is the nation’s richest active thoroughbred racehorse. The 9-year-old gelding earned $60,000 for fi rst-place in the Berkeley and the payday boosted his career earnings to $2,821,370.

“I’d rather be lucky than good sometimes in this busi-ness and that was the case today,” said Dollase. “He made his run but came up a little short. For him to close off those slow fractions and get up for second was incredible. But he’s an incredible horse. He was the recipient of a good situation.”

Awesome Gem was the 3-1 favorite and paid $8.00. The race was run in 1:45.82.

Lone Star Park, Grand Prairie, TXNates Mineshaft never looked back in Lone Star Park Handicap

Windy Hill Farms’ Nates Mineshaft, a fi ve-year-old

ridgeling trained by Austin Smith and ridden by Jesse Campbell, went straight to the lead never looking back to win the 16th running of the Grade III, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap for three-year-olds and upward over a fast main track at Lone Star Park on Monday.

Before today, Nates Mine-shaft had won all but one of his races this year. The loss was from his last out in the Grade II Alysheba earlier this month at Churchill Downs, when he tried a diff erent running style.

“The horse just keeps get-ting better,” said Austin Smith “that was just a trainer error last time. I just looked at the form too much and took him out of his game.”

All of his wins have come in the form of front running speed. Returning to that form today was all he needed to get back in the winners circle again. Going straight to an easy lead, he responded well when asked at the top of the stretch. Drawing off after being shown the whip, he proved much the best while coasting in the fi nal sixteenth crossing the fi nish line 7 ¼ lengths in front of Get in Da House. Fractions were 25.11, 49.20 and 1:11.97.

“He’s gotten to be a very, very confi dent and very kind horse,” said rider Jesse Camp-bell. “I think the job thatAustin has done to keep this horse in such sharp form for as long has he’s been, you know, really says something about what this barn is doing for this ani-mal. Very impressive.”

The $174,000 winners share of the purse boosted Nates Mineshaft’s lifetime earnings to over half a million dollars from seven wins in 15 career starts.

Nates Mineshaft paid $5.40, $3.80 and $3.00, runner-up Get in Da House returned $7.60 and $4.40, and Night Pretty paid $6.00 to show. Marilyn’s Guy, Golden Yank, Apart, Fog Alert and Imco Spirit completed the order of fi nish.

before being picked off by fa-vorite Born Force. The 3-year-old gray Born Force pulled away in the stretch to win Arapahoe’s fi rst Thoroughbred stakes by 2 1/2 lengths as the 8-5 favorite for jockey Michael Ziegler, trainer Mark Jensen and owner Deana Jensen.

Tebow Time, who had a clear lead in the backstretch for jockey Vince Guerra, had his two-race win streak snapped but held on for second as a 7-1 longshot. War Signal closed for third at odds of 22-1.

Born Force had been knocking on the door in stakes company with two thirds in the Turf Paradise Derby and Lost in the Fog Juvenile at Turf Paradise in Arizona. Last year’s Inaugural winner Wally Van went on to win four of the top 3-year-old races at Arapahoe Park.

Cartels First Card returns to win Dash For Speed

Cartels First Card had last appeared on the racetrack in January 2011 and made a suc-cessful return to the races on Sunday winning the $15,000, 330-yard Dash For Speed Stakes. Alejandro Luna, who had also ridden Cartels First

Card to two Arapahoe stakes wins in 2010, was aboard, and the 2-1 favorite owned by Hugo Barron Sierra and trained by Jose Manuel Bar-ron is now a perfect three for three at Arapahoe.

Patriots Glory held second in the fi eld of nine for jockey Elliot Bachicha, Jr., and Wave Bac was third. Final time for the 330 yards was 16.56 seconds.

Ms Dixie could be next Arabian star

Some of the best Arabians in the country raced at Arapa-hoe Park last year, such as T M Fred Texas, who followed two Arapahoe stakes wins by going to Dubai and winning the $250,000 Dubai Kahayla Classic on World Cup card day in March. On opening week-end this year, Ms Dixie made an impressive Arapahoe debut as the 6 1/4-length winner in the Cobra Distaff Sprint. Lori Anne fi nished second in the 6-furlong, $20,000 race for the second year in a row.

Ms Dixie has now won two stakes this year in three starts, also capturing the Grade 2 Texas Yellow Rose Stakes at Sam Houston in February.

Ruidoso Downs Race Track, NMCame West takes fi rst Lady Cap; Valentino de Lao takes Fine Loom

Came West out-fi nished fa-vored She’smylittleman to take the $50,000 First Lady Handicap for fi llies and mares, Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

In the six-furlong First Lady, the Karl Pergola-owned and -trained Came West raced in a stalking position and made a fi ve-wide move through the lane to catch favored She’smylittleman and win by one length. It was another three lengths back to third-place fi nisher Pyrite On My Mind.

Isaias Enriquez was aboard for the win in 1:12.26 for the six furlongs.

A six-year-old daughter of Came Home, Came West raced to an allowance win at Sunland Park two starts ago and was second in the El Diario Stakes at Sunland Park.

Valentino de Lao raced to late-running victory in Fine Loom Handicap

In the 870-yard Fine Loom Handicap, Tony Cames’ Valen-tino de Lao made a wide move from the outside post position in the seven-horse fi eld to score a victory after a string of three second-place fi nishes.

Valentino de Lao, who was timed in :45.84, crossed the fi n-ish line three lengths in front of Cat Five Storm and Git Er Done was third.

Esgar Ramirez rode the winner for trainer Carlos Sedillo.

Valentino de Lao was the runner-up in stakes races in his last two appearances. He was second in the Red Cell Sunland Park Distance Challenge and then was second in the SunRay Park Marathon.

The four-year-old gelding by Apollo (TB) has won fi ve of 14 starts with three second-place fi nishes.

Emerald Downs, Auburn, WAExclusive Diva much the best in Seattle ’Cap

Exclusive Diva took the early lead and poured it on late for an 8-½-length victory Sunday in the $50,000 Seattle Handicap for 3-year-old fi llies at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by Juan Gutier-rez at 118 lbs, Exclusive Diva ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:14.58 and paid $9, $4.60 and $3.20. The winning time tied the stakes record of 1:14-2/5 set by Youcant’takeme in 2003. Owned and bred by Jerre

Paxton’s Northwest Farms and trained by Tom Wenzel, Exclusive Diva has a 3-0-1 re-cord with earnings of $70,605, including $27,500 for Sunday’s victory.

Exclusive Diva rocketed to the lead from the No. 3 post-position, set fractions of :22.82 and:45.66, shook off Lady Hokulea while opening a four-length lead into the lane, and then widened the gap to win with complete authority.

Royal Moses, the 8-to-5 betting favorite ridden by Joe Crispin at 120 lbs, overcame a troubled trip to fi nish second and paid $3.20 and $2.10.

Lady Hokulea, ridden by Leonel Camacho-Flores, held third and paid $3.40 to show. Muchas Coronas, Talk to My Lawyer, Sweet Saga, Reliable Ema and Mattie Blue complet-ed the order of fi nish.

A Kentucky-bred by Bernardini-Puxa Saco, Exclusive Diva is still unbeaten around one turn including stakes tri-umphs in the Seattle Handicap and last year’s Angie C Stakes. Her only loss was a third-place fi nish in the one-mile Barbara Shinpoch Stakes last August.

Gutierrez, riding his sec-ond stakes winner in as many weeks, said things went just as they were drawn up.

“The plan was to go to the front and try to get her to relax,” Gutierrez said. “I felt a little pressure from Lady Hoku-lea, but at the quarter-pole, my horse took another gear. I didn’t think she’d do it so easily for being such a little horse. She proved she was much the best.”

Crispin said Royal Moses should improve as distances get longer, perhaps in the $50,000 Irish Day Handicap at one mile on Sunday, June 24.

“She ducked out really bad at the start, so I just dropped her down to the rail and let her save ground,” Crispin said. “She was weaving through traffi c, but we had to go fi ve-wide around the turn, so it cost us a little bit.

“If they would’ve pushed the leader a little more, I think I would’ve caught her. At this point, with the way (Royal Moses) closes, I think she’ll be wonderful going two turns. She’ll be tough to beat this year.”

Betfair Hollywood Park, Inglewood, CAMega Dream stuns Mizdirection in Great Lady M.

For the second day in a

row, a Southern California newcomer sprung a stakes surprise at Betfair Hollywood Park.

The culprit Sunday was 13-1 outsider Mega Dream, who shocked 2-5 favorite Miz-direction in the $75,070 Great Lady M. This victory came 24 hours after Wilkinson’s 44-1 stunner in the Grade II, $150,000 American Handicap.

The come-from-behind win came a little more than six weeks after an optional claiming score at Oaklawn Park in her fi rst race for trainer Jeff Bonde.

A 5-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro out of the St. Jovite mare Dream Away, Mega Dream was ridden by Rafael Bejarano and complet-ed the six furlongs on turf in 1:08.84. The margin of victory was 1 ¼ lengths.

Transferred to Bonde after being purchased for $40,000 by Barry Arnason, Jerry Du-rant and Mersad Metanovic at a Keeneland mixed sale, Mega Dream, who paid $28.40, $9.40 and $6.40, earned most of the sale price back Sunday. The $43,530 payday increased her bankroll to $146,585. She’s won four of 11.

Like Wilkinson, Mega Dream is well-traveled. Betfair

Hollywood Park was the sixth diff erent track at which she has run, joining Fair Grounds, Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Saratoga and Oaklawn.

Mega Dream, who was previously trained by Ralph Nicks, certainly bettered her previous turf eff ort. The dark bay, who was bred in Kentucky by Nancy Stillman, trailed going a mile last Aug. 20 at Saratoga in her grass debut.

“Since she’s come out here, she’s had some sizzling works on the main track,’’ said Bonde. “I entered her three or four times in an allowance race on Cushion Track and the races didn’t go.

“I saw this race in the (condition) book, so last week I breezed her on turf (fi ve furlongs in 1:01 1/5 May 20) and she went really well on it. I said we should take a chance here because this might work out.’’

Seeking her fi fth con-secutive win for trainer Mike Puype and a partnership that includes radio and television sports broadcaster Jim Rome, Mizdirection was a no-excuse second.

Settled off the pace by jockey Garrett Gomez early,

the gray daughter of Mizzen Mast swung to the outside at the head of the lane, collared pacesetter Bloemer Girl early in midstretch, but couldn’t match the winner in the fi nal sixteenth of a mile. She paid $2.60 and $2.10.

“Everything was going well,’’ said Gomez. “She placed herself well and I thought that any time I wanted to go, I could go. I saw (jockey Joel) Rosario (on 9-2 second choice and eventual fourth place fi n-isher Teroda) getting through on the fence and I told her to go. When I told her to go, she lengthened, but she didn’t quicken.’’

The show price on Bloemer Girl, a California bred who recently returned to her home state after four starts in Louisiana and Kentucky earlier in the year, was $6.60. She wound up a half-length behind Mizdirection.

R A C E R E C A P Swin in Sunday’s $75,000 Dine Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old colts and geldings at SunRay Park.

Saddled by Ray Ashford Jr., Zenon’s Star covered 6 ½ furlongs in 1:17.72 while ral-lying to defeat Dueling Dom by a half of a length under jockey Alfredo Juarez Jr. The gelding by Fusaichi Zenon (JPN) earned $45,000 to push his bankroll to $115,292 from 12 races.

“The pace wasn’t very fast, and I was a little con-cerned about that because the horse in front (Dueling Dom) was going really easy,” said Juarez. “Another horse came between us, and I wasn’t sure how much horse I had at that point.

“I hit him left-handed, and exactly at that time he switched leads and took off ,” the rider added.

Zenon’s Star was bred by Michael Weatherly. The geld-ing became the second stakes winner sired by Fusaichi Ze-non, a 15-year-old son of 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Sunday Silence. Racing in Japan and the U.S. from 1999-2001, Fusaichi Zenon earned $768,151 from eight outs and was a graded stakes winner in Japan.

Fusaichi Zenon has sired the earners of more than $542,000 from 25 starters. He entered stud in 2004, and he stands for a $1,000 fee at Weatherly Horse Farm in Anthony, New Mexico.

Zenon’s Star’s dam, Miss Trixie, is a 12-year-old daugh-ter of the Full Choke stallion B.G.’s Drone who won the 2002 Dessie and Fern Sawyer Futurity (R) during the New Mexico State Fair portion of The Downs at Albuquerque meet.

Zenon’s Star was a

$3,200 purchase at the 2010 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs. All told, the gelding has won three races, and his stakes re-cord includes a second-place fi nish to E Bar Way in last year’s 1-mile, $129,860 New Mexico Eddy County Stakes (R) at Zia Park.

Also during the Zia Park meet, Zenon’s Star posted a one-length win in a 5 1/2-fur-long entry-level allowance race for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds on October 24.

Sent to post at odds of 11-1, Zenon’s Star returned a $24.80 win mutuel and paired with Dueling Dom – the 4-1 second choice – for an $86.40 ($2) exacta. Odds-on favorite That’s Who fi nished third, one length behind the winner, to complete a $2 trifecta payoff of $250.40.

Desert Road ran fourth and was followed by E Bar Way, Stealyndeewin, Boy Ego, and Pecos Valley Wind.

Dueling Dom is a chest-nut gelding by the Storm Cat stallion Dominique’s Cat campaigned by Judge Lanier Thoroughbreds. Dueling Dom has banked $52,271 from nine races, and his two wins include a 3 1/2-length score in a 6 1/2-furlong, $27,100 al-lowance sprint for state-bred 2-year-olds at SunRay Park on May 1.

That’s Who was sent to post at odds of 2-5 and saw his three-race win streak snapped in the Dine. A homebred Quinton’s Gold gelding owned by Sam and Latane Stevens of Lamesa, Texas, That’s Who has won six of 10 races – including four stakes, and the $7,500 third-place share of the Dine purse increased his earnings to $360,270.

MAY 26, 2012Evangeline Downs, Opelousas, LAAquapazza benefi ts from pace to win Opelousas

Willow Lane Stables and Ronny Werner’s Aquapazza ran past pacesetters Love Dare and Vera Belle in the stretch to take the $50,000 Opelousas Stakes for fi llies and mares on the turf at Evangeline Downs on Saturday night.

Love Dare and Vera Bella were nearly 10-lengths ahead of the fi eld at the halfway point of the one-mile test before fail-ing to maintaining their advan-tage in the stretch. Aquapazza took advantage and won by an expanding three quarters of a length while Love Dare main-tained second, one-half length ahead of Vera Belle.

The Jamie Theriot-ridden Aquapazza was timed in 1:36.35 to maintain her consis-tent record this year. She now has two wins, a second and a third from four starts this year for trainer and co-owner Wer-ner. Her other win came in a $25,000 claiming race over the grass at Fair Grounds on New Year’s Day.

The Opelousas Stakes win was her fourth win from 11 starts on the turf and she has been on the board nine times on the grass.

Delta Downs, Vinton, LAMs Jingles dominates during tripleheader

Double A Partnership’s Miss Jingles showed that she is a fi lly worth watching in upcoming Louisiana-bred futurities after her impressive victory in the $252,000 Lassie Futurity on Saturday night at Delta Downs.

The Laddie Futurity for Louisiana-bred colts and geldings and the Louisiana Purchase Stakes for state-bred, non-stakes winners were also on the program.

Miss Jingles sprinted to a daylight advantage within 200 yards and then cruised to the one-length win under jockey Eddie Cox. They were timed in :16.464 for the 330 yards as the 3-5 favorite.

A daughter of Bigtime Favorite trained by Frank Cavazos, Ms Jingles earned her favoritism after winning her Lassie Futurity trial by one-and-one-half lengths with

the fastest-qualifying mark of :16.710. The only blemish on her four-race resume is a third-place fi nish in the Mardi Gras Futurity as part of the favored entry.

Bare Naked Martini was second by one-half length over Miss Taylor Swift.

Jaime Torres’ Coltins Fast Dash is improving with each start and reached stakes win-ner status with his one-half length win in the $225,337 Laddie Futurity.

Coltins Fast Dash proved best in the fi nal half of the 330-yard contest with a :16.481 time under Manuel Guiterrez.

Trained by Steve Garrison,

Coltins Fast Dash has been improving in each of his four starts. After a sixth-place fi nish and then a third-place run in his fi rst two starts at Louisiana Downs, the Heza Fast Dash gelding won his maiden when he won his Laddie Futurity tri-al by a nose with the seventh-fastest qualifying time.

Dashin Forward was second and it was a neck back to third-place runner Jess Blue Boy.

In the Louisiana Purchase Stakes, there were three hors-es virtually hitting the wire at the same time. The photo-fi nish camera determined that AJS Fast Dash won by a nose over Flamboyant Chick and

Prairie Meadows, Altoona, IAShadowbdancing, Sterling Madame impress at Prairie Meadows

Shadowbdancing was al-lowed to get an early lead and win the $60,000 Jim Rasmus-sen Memorial Stakes and Ster-ling Madame overwhelmed the $60,000 Wild Rose Stakes on Saturday night at Prairie Meadows.

In the one-and-one-sixteenth mile Jim Rasmussen Stakes, Shadowbdancing was setting the pace without any pressure on the backstretch and cruised around the fi nal turn before any challengers off ered opposition. The Israel Ocampo-ridden seven-year-

old had maintained enough energy to secure the two-and-one-half length win.

The Terrel Gore-trained Shadowbdancing had placed in two starts in minor stakes races around two turns in is two prior 2012 starts. He has now won 14 of 38 career starts.

PDQ Kiddo was second and It Happened Again was third while never seriously threatening Shadowbedanc-ing.

In the one-and-one-six-teenth-mile Wild Rose Stakes for distaff ers, there was no doubt that 2-5 favorite Sterling Madame was the best mare in the fi ve-horse fi eld.

Andrena Van Doren’s homebred Sterling Madame rolled to the lead under a hold from jockey David Mello and the rider had an easy trip to the fi nish line. The Thomas Amoss-trainee steadily increased her advantage and cruised to win by more than 12 lengths.

She was timed in 1:43.15.Sterling Madame was third

in the New Orleans Distaff at Fair Grounds in March two starts ago. She then was fourth in an allowance race over Keeneland’s artifi cial surface.

Another World was second and Ginger Added was third.

Betfair Hollywood Park, Inglewood, CAWilkinson pulls American Handicap shocker

Making his fi rst start for trainer Jeff Mullins, Wilkinson pulled the biggest surprise in the long history of the $150,000 American Handicap Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Dismissed at 44-1 in the Grade II, the 4-year-old Lemon Drop Kid saved ground while racing close to the pace, angled outside approaching the stretch, collared leader Li-berian Freighter with less than an eighth of a mile to run and easily withstood the late surge of 3-5 favorite Mr. Commons.

Owned by E.K. Gaylord II, Wilkinson was ridden by Mar-tin Pedroza as he earned the fi rst graded win of his career. The margin of victory was 1 ¼ lengths.

Well-traveled when in the barn of Neil Howard, the dark bay colt out of the Afternoon Deelites mare Tasha’s Delight arrived in California having lost six in a row.

He had fi nished on the board twice during that period in two graded races – includ-

ing a third in the Grade I Jamaica Handicap last Oct. 8 at Belmont Park – but had not been better than fi fth in his fi rst three outings of 2012.

Completing the mile on turf in 1:33.37, Wilkinson paid $90.60, $18.20 and $8.20. The previous highest win price in the American was Takarian, who returned $64.20 in 1999 when scoring the fi rst of his two victories in a race that has been contested 73 times.

Now 5-for-18 lifetime, Wilkinson, who has competed at seven diff erent tracks in fi ve states, increased his earnings to $336,994.

Besides Belmont Park and Betfair Hollywood Park, the Kentucky bred has raced at Keeneland, Churchill Downs, Saratoga, Fair Grounds and Thistledown.

“I only got the horse fi ve days ago, so all the credit has to go to Neil Howard,’’ said Mullins after his fi rst Ameri-can victory. “I trained (Tasha’s Delight) and she always tried hard. The trip was kind of what we wanted.

“(Gaylord) told me the horse needs to be close up and out of trouble. We let Marty know that and he did it per-fectly. The fi rst thing you notice

Sterling Madame

about him is he’s a handsome horse. He does everything in the morning and loves his job.

Mullins added Wilkinson will be aimed for the $300,000 Grade I Shoemaker Mile June 30.

The win was also the fi rst in the race for Pedroza and the veteran rider was quick to credit what he was told in the saddling paddock.

“In my handicapping it looked like he wanted to make one run,’’ said Pedroza. “When I came out to get instructions, everything changed. Jeff told me to warm him up without a pony and get him to feel loose and aggressive.

“He told me to send him leaving there and sit behind the fi rst fl ight. I just fell right into a perfect trip. If I had done what I wanted to do, sit and make one run, I probably wouldn’t have won. Believe me, my plan was diff erent.’’

The loss was the second in a row for Mr. Commons, who paid $2.40 and $2.10, as the odds-on choice. He was also the runner-up when 4-5 in the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile March 3 at Santa Anita.

“I thought he ran really well from the 10 post,’’ said Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, re-ferring to Mr. Commons’ draw. “You’d like to win it, but he’ll get a lot out of this race and move forward.

A fi ve-time winner over the Betfair Hollywood Park grass, Liberian Freighter put away pace rival and 4-1 second choice Compari entering the stretch, but weakened a bit late in his fi rst start since he trailed in the Grade I Shoemak-er Mile last July 2. The show price on the California bred gelding, who fi nished a half-length behind Mr. Commons, was $5.40.

Compari wound up fourth and he was followed by Mobi-

lized, Tigah, Calimonco, Great Warrior and Soul Candy. Bar-ney Rebel and Venomous were scratched earlier in the day.

Siempre Mio, who was scheduled to make his fi rst start for new owners – Los An-geles Lakers stars Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol – was scratched from Saturday’s sixth race by trainer Doug O’Neill.

The 4-year-old gelding, who had drawn the inside post in the $54,000 allowance, was “coughing,’’ according to O’Neill, so the decision was made to scratch.

Bryant and Gasol each purchased a 25% interest at a Lakers Foundation charity auction April 24. The California bred is also owned by Mark Verge’s Westsiderentals.com and Chris Quinn.

During The Inside Scoop, the weekly paddock show at Betfair Hollywood Park hosted by Kurt Hoover, O’Neill indi-cated Siempre Mio, who has two wins in fi ve starts, could be back in action within two weeks.

Sunland Park, Farmington, NMDashkova rallies to win Aztec Oaks

Jose Rivera Jr. rode Dash-kova to a come-from-behind victory in Saturday’s $75,000 Aztec Oaks Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fi llies at SunRay Park.

Saddled by Dwain Gris-som for owner Double Kee LLC, Dashkova covered 6 ½ furlongs in 1:20.23 after closing on the early fractions of :24.14 and :47.94 set by early leaders Rio Fresco and Vinton Row. The bay daughter of Atilla’s Storm’s margin of victory was one length from Vinton Row, and she returned a $9.60 win mutuel as the 7-2 third choice in the fi eld of eight.

Dashkova was bred by Justin Kengye. The fi lly is the fi rst stakes winner from 21 starters sired by Attila’s Storm, a 10-year-old son of the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat whose runners have earned more than $448,000 and include Fallon Fontane, the third-place fi nisher in the fi llies division of the $100,958 Cop-per Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park on April 14.

Attila’s Storm is owned by James E. Helzer and R.D. Hub-bard, and the stallion stands for a $1,500 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch in Anthony, New Mexico.

Dashkova’s dam, Olympic Crisis, is an unraced 11-year-old daughter of the Naskra stallion Olympio. Her second dam, the Florida-bred Pass The Line mare Mid Life Crisis, was a two-time allowance winner at Calder Racecourse in Miami in 1996.

The $45,000 winner’s share of the Aztec Oaks pushed Dashkova’s bankroll to $165,403, of which $150,110 has been earned this season. The fi lly, who was a $900 buy at the 2010 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs, has won four of 12 rac-es – including three of six this year – and her stakes resume

includes a 2 1/2-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile, $110,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks (R) for state-bred sophomore fi llies at Sunland Park on March 25.

Dashkova teamed with runner-up Vinton Row, a 13-1 longshot, for a $2 exacta payoff of $200. Super Stormy, the 9-2 fourth choice, fi nished third, 1 ½ lengths behind the winner, to complete a $3,575.80 ($2) trifecta.

Roll Bloomers Roll, Easy Loving Who, Silence N Soli-tude, Whisper’s Sister, and 2-1 favorite Rio Fresco completed the order of fi nish.

Vinton Row is a homebred bay daughter of Pro Prado campaigned by Johnny Black. Unraced as a 2-year-old, the fi lly has earned $40,250 from four races, and her two wins include a 7 3/4-length score against state-bred $10,000 non-winners-of-two claimers at Sunland on March 18.

Super Stormy was coming off of an 11 1/2-length victory in a 6 1/2-furlong non-winners of-two $6,250 claiming sprint at SunRay on May 13. The homebred dark bay or brown daughter of Suave Prospect has won two of 12 starts and has banked $42,948 for her owner, J. Kirk Robison of El Paso, Texas.

MAY 25, 2012Remington Park, Oklahoma City, OKJakes Charming Jody wins Blink Of An Eye by wide margin

All speed and quickness all the time featured Friday night at Remington Park in the $25,000 Blink Of An Eye Stakes at 110 yards. Winning the stampede to the fi nish was Jakes Charming Jody by three-quarters of a length, impres-sive considering the length of the event.

Owned and bred by Gary Kurz of Von Ormy, Texas and trained by Toby Keeton, Jakes Charming Jody was ridden by Francisco Ramirez. When the starting gates fl ew open, the 4-year-old mare was ready, getting a quick jump on her competition then quickly opening up for her winning margin. Jakes Charming Jody crossed the fi nish in :6.784 seconds over the fast track, just missing the Remington Park track record for 110 yards by .009 seconds.

Jakes Charming Jody was 7-1 in the wagering and paid $16.40 to win, $10.40 to place and $7 to show. Coker James was second and returned a

healthy $34.40 to place and $6.60 to show. Dashing Cover-age was the beaten 5-2 wager-ing favorite, fi nishing third and paying $3.20 to show.

The Blink Of An Eye win was the seventh from 17 at-tempts for Jakes Charming Jody and it was her second career triumph at Remington Park. The $15,000 winner’s share of the race moved her career bankroll to $136,654. A mare by Jody O Toole from the Special Elan mare Charming Elan, Jakes Charming Jody was bred in Texas.

The Blink Of An Eye Stakes gave Keeton and Ramirez their third win on the Friday night card together. They also teamed to score with Chrome Version ($5.20 to win) in the second race and Country Chick Moons ($4.40) in the seventh race.

Jockey G.R. Carter clinched his 15th Remington Park title as leading rider, on a night when he didn’t even compete in Oklahoma City. While Carter competed in trials for the Ruid-oso Futurity at Ruidoso Downs, N.M., it became mathemati-cally impossible for any other jockey to catch him in the fi nal three days at Remington Park.

Going into Saturday night

action, Carter starts with 71 winners, 33 ahead of Jimmy Brooks who sits in second with 38.

The other horsemen cat-egories are still not fi nalized as Eddie Willis leads Clint Craw-ford in the trainer standings, 40-36. The owner standings have Carl Pevehouse of Ratliff City, Okla. on top over Belle Vista Farms of Arcola, Ill. 13-10.

Prairie Meadows, Altoona, IASprint stakes doubleheader at Prairie Meadows

River Bear went from last to fi rst to with the $60,000 Prai-

rie Express Stakes while Salty Strike prevailed by a nose in the $60,000 Prairie Rose Stakes during a stakes doubleheader on Friday night at Prairie Mead-ows.

Each of the races was run over six furlongs on a sealed and sloppy track. The Prairie Express was held for males with the Prairie Rose held for fi llies and mares.

Dana Waier Thorough-breds’ River Bear settled in last place in the six-horse fi eld while Wiredfortwotwenty opened up a large early lead in an attempt to win the race for the second straight year.

River Bear, under Danush Sukie, made a fi ve-wide run

through the stretch to get the three-quarter-length win as the 22-11 favorite. Signsealndeliver also caught Wiredfortwotwenty to fi nish second. Wiredfortwot-wenty saved third.

The Leroy Hellman-trained River Man was timed in 1:09.18.

In the Prairie Rose, it was a very tight fi nish when Starlight Starbright appeared to have the race in hand within yards of the wire, but Salty Strike unleashed a furious charge in the last few strides to get the win by a very close nose.

Shane Laviolette was aboard Salty Strike, the odds-on favorite, for the win in 1:09.85.

Salty Strike concluded her 2011 season with a four-length win in the Dream Supreme Stakes at Churchill Downs in November. She came back this year to fi nish off the board in a pair of stakes at Oaklawn Park before her score in the Prairie Rose.

Delta Downs, Vinton, LATripleheader runs at Delta Downs

Santiago Castillo’s RDD Dashin Eff ort scored as the favorite in the $81,002 Old South Futurity and trainer

Heath Taylor took the other two stakes — the $52,550 Old South Futurity and the Grade 3, $25,000 Develop A Plan Stakes — on Friday night at Delta Downs.

RDD Dashin Eff ort surged in the fi nal strides of the 330-yard Old South Futurity to grab the win under jockey Arturo Carrillo. They were timed in :16.564 for the head win.

Jet Black Legend was sec-ond while Chickie Kool was a close third, just a neck behind the top-two runners.

The Jonathan Castaneda-trained RDD Dashin Eff ort, a gelding by Dashin Bye, raced to his third-straight win after fi nishing fourth in his fi rst start. He won a maiden race by a nose at Sam Houston Race Park and then showed his late run to win his Old South Futurity trial by one-half length.

Trainer Taylor stepped up in the Old South Futurity and the Develop A Plan Stakes.

Renee Spiller’s Triple Vodka posted his second 2012 win from three starts when he won the Old South Derby by a neck over 11-10 favorite Jess Fly With Me. Sizzlin Cartel was more than one length back in third.

Triple Vodka, with Raul Ramirez Jr. up, raced the 400

yards in :19.588 after open-ing up a daylight lead and the holding off a bid by Jess Fly With Me.

A son of Tres Seis, Triple Vodka was undefeated from three starts last year, highlight-ed by his three-quarter-length score in the $400,000 TQHA Sale Futurity in July, his fi nal 2011 start. The colt returned in March to fi nish third after a troubled trip and was then awarded the win via disquali-fi cation in his Old South Derby trial.

Triple Vodka has fi ve wins, including a pair of stakes, from six starts.

Denis and Julie Schoen-hofer’s First Klas Fred raced to

his fi rst win since September when he won the Develop A Plan Stakes at 350 yards. He won by a nose in a tight fi nish in which the top fi ve fi nishers were separated by four noses.

Charal Kid was second and Kool Country Man was third.

Veteran John Hamilton was aboard for the win in :17.380.

First Klas Fred took the Classic Chevrolet Stakes for Texas-breds back in Septem-ber and then was third in the Cherokee Challenge. He was favored in each race.

In his two starts this year, First Klas Fred was sixth in an allowance race and fourth in the Sam Houston Classic.

MAY 26, 2012Ruidoso Downs Race Track, NMChamps make cut into Ruidoso Derby; new players ready for the challenge

Champions Ochoa and Fea-ture Mr Bojangles each quali-fi ed for the Grade 1, $679,207 Ruidoso Derby on Saturday, however they will be tested by horses who showed they are ready for top-level grade 1 competition.

The fi nals for the Ruidoso Derby will be held on June 9 and join the Grade 1, $600,000 Ruidoso Derby to produce of the most impressive stakes doubleheaders this year in American Quarter Horse racing. There will also be full wagering on the Belmont Stakes when I’ll Have Another makes his bid to win the Triple Crown.

The horses with the 10-fast-est times from the 400-yard Ruidoso Derby trials qualify for the Ruidoso Derby. The juve-niles with the 10-fastest from Friday’s Ruidoso Futurity trials will compete in the 350-yard futurity.

Reigning champion two-year-old and two-year-old geld-ing Ochoa and 2011 champion two-year-old colt Feature Mr Bojangles are each among the top-four derby qualifi ers and fi gure to move forward in the derby after returning from extended rests for the Ruidoso Derby trials.

Ochoa, winner of the 2011 All American Futurity, was sent off as the overwhelming 2-5 fa-vorite in the fi rst of six Ruidoso Derby trials and settled for sec-ond place after not handling the closing rush of 31-1 longshot Dashing Spartacus.

J and L Stables’ Dashing Spartacus surprised after being

winless in fi ve previous starts while the Sleepy Gilbreath-trained Ochoa had won three of four starts with a third-place fi nish in last year’s Ruidoso Futu-rity. The Tres Seis sired Ochoa absolutely dominated the Grade 1, $2,400,000 All Ameri-can Futurity by one-and-one-half lengths as the 8-5 favorite. That was his previous start on Labor Day.

The Carl Draper-trained Dashing Spartacus, a $95,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, raced to the second-fastest time of :20.131 while Ochoa recorded a :20.204 time. All of the trials were raced into a very stiff headwind that ranged up to 30 miles per hour.

Two-time All American Futurity winner Draper also qualifi ed Rc Black Mamba and Texas Rockstar to the Ruidoso Derby, a race he has won three times in the last 10 years.

The Mr Jess Perry-sired Dashing Spartacus, whose best previous race was a third-place run in his Rainbow Futurity trial, was making his fi rst start since fi nishing last in a Zia Park allow-ance race on October 9.

Feature Mr Bojangles, sired by Feature Mr Jess, showed he is ready for his summer derby campaign when he pulled away from RC Black Mamba to win the fourth trial by one-half length as the 7-10 favorite. Feature Mr Bojangles posted the third-fastest time of :20.157 while RC Black Mamba recorded the sixth-fastest time of :20.238.

Owned by R.D. Hubbard, Jim Helzer, SM Cattle Export Company and Jaime Domin-guez, Feature Mr Bojangles has won seven-straight races since fi nishing a troubled second in his fi rst start. The Roberto Sanchez-trained colt won three futurities in New Mexico last year, highlighted by his one-half length win in the Grade 1,

$700,000 Rainbow Futurity. One of the new names

in the Ruidoso Derby and the grade 1 stakes ranks is fastest-qualifi er Executive Brass, a $15,000 supplemental nominee to enter the Ruidoso Derby trials. The J.J. Gonzales II-trained gelding won his Ruidoso Derby trial by one length with a :20.121 time.

Owned by John Thurmond and Sherree Meridyth, Execu-tive Brass was second behind Feature Mr Bojangles in last year’s Four Corners Futurity. Since then he has raced in trials and allowance race.

MAY 25, 2012Ruidoso Downs Race Track, NMKrash Cartel impresses in debut to set top Ruidoso Futurity time

Los Primitos’ Krash Cartel raced to a four-and-one-quar-ter length win in the second of 25 trials to the Grade 1, $600,000 Ruidoso Futurity on

Saturday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs and his time of :17.759 for 350 yards held up as the fastest-qualifying time during a day dominated by a stiff head wind.

The wind throughout the card exceeded 15 miles per hour with the majority of trials ran into a wind above 20 miles per hour.

The time of the 10th-fastest qualifi er, Jess A Zoo-min, was :17.973. Last year, on Ruidoso Futurity trial day with an eight to 15 mile-per-hour head wind, the fastest time was :17.502 and the 10th-fast-est time was 17.697. Thus, the wind was such a large factor that Krash Cartel’s time would not have qualifi ed for the 2011 Ruidoso Futurity.

Nonetheless, the wind was consistent throughout the card and the horses that suc-cessfully dealt with the wind and raced to the 10-fastest times will compete for a record $600,000 purse on June 9.

Krash Cartel, a $72,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase, ranks as one of the favorites for the Ruidoso Futurity after his brilliant career debut for trainer John Stine-baugh. The Corona Cartel son totally dominated his rivals and

fi gures to step forward when he makes his second out in the Ruidoso Futurity.

Veteran Cody Jensen was aboard Krash Cartel for the precocious debut.

It was an afternoon that featured success with fi rst-time starters. In addition to Krash Cartel, Prince of Alexander, Co-ronas Ice Maiden and Separate Battle reached the Ruidoso Futurity fi nals in their career debuts.

The Micheal Alexander-owned and -trained Prince Of Alexander won the 18th trial by two lengths and his time of :17.786 was the second-fastest quali-fying mark form 246 horses in the trials.

Juveniles with stakes experience also will return on June 9 for the Ruidoso Futurity.

Owned by Fredda

Draper, Denny Bowen and Susie Taylor, PJ Chick In Black was a $15,000 supplemental nominee and made a very successful jump from New Mexico-bred stakes compe-tition to the Grade 1 open futurity level. The Carl Draper-trained fi lly rolled to a three-length trial win and her time of :17.848 was the third-fastest qualifying mark.

The daughter of Desirio made her career debut in the trials to the New Mexican Spring Futurity and she raced to a one-length win in :15.001 for 300 yards. She moved for-ward to win the $110,000 New

Mexican Spring Futurity by one length.

Jose Badilla’s Pajarita Sita, a member of the fi rst crop of Pappasito, could be dangerous in the Ruidoso Futurity after her one-and-one-quarter-length trial win with the sixth-fastest time of :17.913. The $42,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase started her career with a West Texas Futurity trial win and then fi nished third in the Grade1 West Texas Futurity as the 5-2 favorite.

The quickest trial results will be available through Twit-ter by following Ruidoso Press Box (@RuiPressBox).
