Brain Resource & Information Network Hospital Home School Slide 2 Project BRAIN Addresses the Dilemma: Identifying & Supporting Students With TBI in the Classroom Increasing awareness of children and youth with TBI who are served by the school system Providing training and ongoing support to schools, families, and healthcare providers in the early identification of children with TBI Supporting BRAIN Resource Teams within selected school systems that will consult locally on issues of developing supports for Tennessee students with TBI Partnering with Tennessee hospitals to promote effective communication between healthcare providers and educators to facilitate successful transitions Slide 3 Slide 4 Brain Injury Transition Liaison (BITL) After a student receives a diagnosis of a TBI (mild, moderate, or severe): At discharge the family will be presented with the consent form If given consent, the Brain Injury Transition Liaison will notify the childs school principal that he/she has sustained a TBI The Liaison will provide support through follow up phone calls Slide 5 Whether or not the family gives consent, they will be given helpful resources SIGNS & SYMPTOMS TOOL Slide 6 BITL Brochure Slide 7 Slide 8 Success Stories Parents are grateful for education, resources & follow-up Signs & Symptoms Tool is very effective Daycare involvement School education ED Staff Satisfaction & Engagement Slide 9 What can you do? Important to use TBI instead of CHI This will enable the child to receive SPED services if necessary Write nursing order to consent An updated order set using the consent process is in production Utilize the Signs and Symptoms Tool even if not consenting the patient
