The big event on the RMAWA calendar is the annual RMA Awards. There are nine categories:

1. Best news coverage – print $500

Award categories1. Best news coverage – print

• Agricultural news story published either online or in hardcopy in WA print media.• Judged on newsworthiness, style, content, objectivity and balance.• Applicable to one story only. If this coverage forms part of a series, or is the product of investigativereporting, a 200-250 word explanatory note must be included detailing the work of the journalist to producethe story.• Entries for online print stories must be print-based articles only.

2. Best news coverage – broadcast

• Agricultural news story broadcast on television, radio or online (including podcasts) in the WA media.Stories of dual broadcasting (TV and radio) allowed, however no stories published for print and broadcastpermitted.• Judged on newsworthiness, style, content, objectivity and balance.• Applicable to one story only. If this coverage forms part of a series, or is the product of investigativereporting a 200-250 word explanatory note must be included detailing the work of the journalist toproduce the story.• Entries for stories published online must have their key component as broadcast of audio or video.

3. Best regional news coverage outside of agriculture

• Coverage of a rural news story published or broadcast in WA media.• Judged on newsworthiness, style, content, objectivity and balance.• Non-agricultural story content covering topics including but not exclusive to regional infrastructure or services, sport, politics, human interest, charity or community.• Applicable to one story only. If this coverage forms part of a series, or is the product of investigative reporting a 200-250 word explanatory note must be included detailing the work of the journalist to produce the story.

Award categories4. Best communications campaign

• Applies to public relations practice carried out in rural WA or with a rural/agricultural element.• Applicable to promotions, campaigns or events. • Judged on an executive summary up to 1000 words in length addressing any of the following: situation analysis, goals and objectives, research, target audience, communication strategy, implementation, budget, results and evaluation process.• Supporting materials such as media releases, printed material, photographs, posters, media clippings or electronic material can be included for this entry.

5. Best photograph

• A photograph published in print or online primarily for WA rural and regional media.• Original image and copy of printed or online feature to be provided electronically.• Judged according to impact, technical application and relevance.• Entries must be an individual photograph, however, the submitted work may be extracted from aphotographic feature or series.• Entries to be accompanied by an executive summary of no more than 200 words.

6. Best new entrant

• Communications or journalism professional who has been in the industry for three years or less.• Commitmenttoongoingimprovementinthefield,quality,consistencyofworkandinvolvementinindustry activities to be considered.• Entries to comprise a portfolio of three journalism or communications works with an agricultural orregional focus.• Nominations can be submitted for individuals by other RMA WA members.• Entries to be accompanied by an executive summary of no more than 200 words, outlining previouswork history.• The RMA WA Committee will contact the nominee’s employers for references prior to judging.

• One feature article or segment on one subject published or broadcast in the WA rural media.• Recognises'background'informationinaformCategory1or2cannot.Thisisnotnecessarilyfirstpage news, however, must be considered best practice journalism to reward research, story development,considerationoftaskandcraftingoffinalpiece.• The article or segment should be both detailed and easy to read or listen to.• Content may cover topics such as human interest, on-farm features, sport or other relevant rural orregional issues, including agriculture.• It should be an in-depth story, enabling the audience to gain a clear understanding of the issue that asingle news story cannot provide.• Minimumwordcountof800required.

8. Student award

• Any tertiary student who has produced up to three news or feature pieces with a regional or agricultural focus which have been published or broadcast.• Student pieces that have not been broadcast/published need written recommendation from a lecturer/tutor. • Showscommitmenttoongoingimprovementinthefieldofjournalism.• Print entries must include captioned photos and broadcast and video entries must include transcript and captioned photos (2MB)• Entries would be judged for: newsworthiness, accuracy, order of information, grammar, and adherence to the in-house style of publication.

9. Best demonstration of industry expertise (new category)

• Industry-specific(agriculture,miningandresourcesorother)storythatreflectsin-depthknowledgeofthe topic and/or industry published or broadcast in the WA rural media.• Generallythestorywouldbetargetedtoaspecificaudience,ifso,identifywhothetargetaudienceis.• Judgedonnewsworthinesstothespecificaudience,style,contentandinformationprovided,objectivityand balance.• Content may cover livestock sales, market updates, machinery, industry science-based news or otherrelevant rural and regional industry stories.• Applicable to one story only. If this coverage forms part of a series, or is the product of investigativereporting, a 200-250 word explanatory note must be included detailing the work of the journalist toproduce the story.

Rules for eligibility• Entrants must be an individual or corporate member of RMA WA.• Non-membersmustbecomeafinancialmemberofRMAWAtobeeligibletoentertheawards.• Entrants must be actively working in the Western Australian media or communications industry.• A maximum of two entries may be submitted per person, per category.• Entry submissions must have been published/aired between 18 October 2018 and 10 March 2020.• No duplication of entries across award categories will be accepted.
