The youth organization STAN is a contemporary, non-governmental art
community based in Ukraine. They commit themselves to uniting writers,
philosophers, artists, journalists, teachers, social activists and student youth. After
the deterioration of the democratic situation in Ukraine, the organization directs its
activities to addressing social problems through unconventional methods such as
contemporary art. STANs main aim is the development of a creative civil society
by organizing and supporting cultural, educational, social and human rights
initiatives. They publish anthologies of social poems, organize street actions,
performances, and concerts, trying to push both, government and society.
STANs campaign “Cultural Map of Luhansk” is one example of a community
development process, with the aim to democratize the cultural sphere of Luhansk
and was supported by the ECF and Heinrich Böll Stiftung. Another program the
organization initiated is “From cinema to actions”, where they screened more than
one hundred films with an emphasis on different social contexts in order to reach
out to young people in the Donbas region, trying to make them become active and
address their own social problems. This initiative was supported by Microsoft, the
European Commission and NED.
STANs work is devoted to the following themes:
development of intercultural dialogue and mutual integration through art;
actions against authoritarianism, xenophobia and racism;
informing the public about social and cultural developments;
supporting socially oriented contemporary art;
breeding a culture of protest and protect the freedom of expression.
