Though poor, their father Asif, dreams of having his children study and live better lives than he did. Asif feels that if he had been educated, their lives would have been much different than what they are today. Saeed, his youngest, is one of the best students of his grade so the poor parents have high hopes from him. Saeed loves sports and is often found outside on the playing a vigorous game of cricket with the neighborhood boys. He dreams of making it to the national cricket team one day. Unfortunately, all of Saeed’s dreams were shattered one day when while playing cricket the ball hit him on his right eye. His friends immediately alerted Saeed’s mother, who assuming it was a normal injury used a homemade remedy to help dull the pain and swelling. Saeed temporarily felt better, but in subsequent days, he found he could not see the blackboard in his classroom clearly and his eyes started to water whenever he concentrated too much while reading. After a couple of weeks, his teachers noticed that Saeed’s grades were falling; he was not paying attention in class and was often staring into space. Previously a confident and outspoken child, he was now withdrawn and quiet – the playful look in his eyes and ready smile were a thing of the past. He looked down while speaking to others, avoided crowds and playing with his friends and siblings. One day they got a call from school – the news was not good. Saeed had started to cry in class, when asked to read from the board, he got up and ran from the room. Upon questioning, Saeed confided in his teacher that he could not see the board properly and he felt something wrong with him. His teacher told Saeed’s father to show him immediately to an Opthamologist. Asif took his son to LRBT Primary Eye Care Center in Baldia Town the very same day; Saeed was diagnosed with traumatic cataract in his right eye and was told that he would need immediate surgery. Worried about the surgery cost, Saeed’s father asked the Ophthalmologist about the expense and in heart could feel the pain of his dreams shattering. To his utmost surprise he was told that treatment at all LRBT facilities is free. Asif took his son to LRBT Korangi where Saeed was given a date for surgery. Saeed’s surgery was successful and he is able to see clearly once again. He is back in school and working harder than ever before. Smiling from ear to ear, he looks at the camera with great confidence as he shares his dreams of becoming a cricketer. LRBT recently treated its 36th million patient and impacted the lives of millions more by enabling the treated to become productive members of society again. Government of Sindh A fresh grant of Rs.35 million has been awarded to LRBT for fiscal year 2017-18. We plan to carry out 12,157 cataract surgeries in four of our Sindh Hospitals over a period of twelve months. This project was especially designed to carry out cataract surgeries on the poor, needy and disadvantaged people in the Province of Sindh. USAID/Sightsavers In accordance with the MoU signed between Sightsavers and LRBT in January 2017, we are in the process of carrying out 21,525 cataract surgeries in this calendar year at ten designated Hospitals over a period of twelve months. In the 2nd quarter, we have been able to conduct 3,500 cataract surgeries, according to plan. Cumulatively, we have so far conducted 9500 surgeries. The project is being implemented on schedule. Despite security concerns, LRBT is also carrying out a comprehensive Childhood Blindness initiative in collaboration with USAID through Sightsavers to address the interlinked problems leading to childhood blindness. In the last three months 13,329 school children and 315 children from the community have been screened under this project. Another project of Sightsavers in collaboration with Standard Chartered Bank under the Seeing is Believing program requires LRBT to carry out refraction, cataract and minor surgeries over a period of 3½ years beginning July 2016. In order to support this Project, LRBT has also been provided with ophthalmic equipment for use in this project. In the April- June quarter, we conducted 1466 surgeries. Brian Holden Vision Institute LRBT is actively participating in this program with BHVI for “Our Children’s Vision” campaign which is a global effort emphasizing the need to increase children’s access to eye health on a war footing. In this quarter we conducted OPD of 59,224 children of which 1,384 were refracted at all our Hospitals. 366 glasses were provided to children requiring them. CBM International Under the two contracts inked between CBM and LRBT, 22 students are to undergo training for a period of one year leading to certification and the second one is a program to carry out 2,200 cataract surgeries this calendar year. Implementation of both programs is underway. Students have been enrolled and are undergoing training at the LRBT School of Ophthalmic Para medicine.
