The Vancouver Region-al Construction Association (VRCA) has announced the Silver Award winners for the 25th annual Awards of Excellence, a premier industry event honouring the regions construction leaders.

Three Silver Award win-ners were selected in most categories for their use of innovative techniques, new materials or excep-tional project management. One Silver Award winner from each category will be

chosen as the Gold Award winner during the 25th Annual VRCA Awards of Excellence gala dinner on October 17, 2013 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

The Silver Award winners this year all represent companies that were able to bring projects of the highest calibre in on time and on budget, says Jan Rob-inson, Interim President of Vancouver Regional Construction Associa-

tion. We are especially excited to make the an-nouncement about this years competition, as the Awards of Excellence is celebrating its 25th an-niversary. This is a sig-nificant milestone, and we are planning a special and appropriately signifi-cant event this year.

In this years competi-tion, there were 42 total en-trants and 38 projects con-sidered. Over the 25 years the competition has been in place, the value of the

projects has grown tremen-dously, and the total value of projects considered in this years competition represented $1.1 billion of construction throughout B.C.

The judges were ex-tremely impressed with the high quality of the projects nominated this year, says Tony Ever-ett, Chair of the Adjudi-cation Committee. All the Silver Award win-ners are true leaders in the industry, and we are proud to honour them at this years milestone event.

The 2013 competition will feature redesigned tro-phies, as well as other ex-citing changes to commem-orate the 25th anniversary and represent the competi-tion going forward, all of

which will be unveiled at the Awards ceremony in October.

Silver award-winning contractors and projects include: General Contractor over $40 Million Graham Construction

    and Engineering, a J.V. (Aberdeen Square Ex-pansion);

ITC Construction Group (2300 Kingsway Resi-dence Ltd.); Stuart Ol-son Dominion Construc-tion Ltd. (Fort St. Johns Hospital and Residential Care Facility).

General Contractor $15 Million to $40 Million EllisDon Corpora-

tion (Transportation Management Centre); PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. (Rich-mond Centre Food

Court Relocation); Smith Bros. & Wilson (B.C.) Ltd. (Edmonds Pool and Community Centre).

General Contractor up to $15 Million EllisDon Corporation

    (Samuel Brighouse Elementary School); Stuart Olson Domin-ion Construction Ltd. (Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) L 10K Fit-out);

related awards will be granted in the trade con-tractor, electrical contrac-tor, mechanical contrac-tor, and manufacturer & supplier categories. At the

IronPlanet, an online marketplace for used heavy equipment, says it has improved its pat-ented and guaranteed equipment inspection reports with the release of a new iPad app for its field inspectors. Iron-Planet offers the indus-trys only guaranteed in-spection reports, backed by IronClad Assurance, allowing buyers to bid on equipment with a high degree of confi-dence. The app improves the quality of these re-ports by allowing inspec-tors to complete reports in the field using an iPad app that provides step-by-step instructions for gathering key data based on the type of equipment being inspected.

Since our online buy-ers dont have physical contact with the equip-ment theyre bidding on, they rely on the data and images in our guaranteed inspection reports, said Randy Berry, Senior Vice

President of Operations and Services, IronPlanet. Our IronClad Assurance guarantees the accuracy of these reports, and we want buyers to have ac-cess to the most detailed reports possible. This app improves the qual-ity of our inspection re-ports while also reducing complexity for our field workers.

IronPlanets app offers numerous benefits, includ-ing: Better data through

standardization: The app enhances the integ-rity of the information in the inspection reports through a standardized process. Field workers choose from 120 differ-ent checklists based on the type of equipment being inspected. The app then walks the inspec-tor through each step and requests pictures to supplement ratings and text. The app provides an alert if an inspector has missed any neces-

sary information, which eliminates incomplete reports and the need for return trips.

Improved service: The app improves service and creates a faster sales cycle because inspection data and images are be-ing reported together electronically. Since ad-ditional data entry is not required, items and their inspection reports can be listed for IronPlanet buy-ers more quickly.

Better media for Iron-Planets marketplace: Since buyers rely on photos when bidding on equipment, its im-portant for images to be high quality. The app allows inspec-tors to take better quality pictures using the iPad camera. The checklists ensure in-spectors have images of every aspect of the equipment.Recently, IronPlanets

app was featured at a se-ries of technology seminars organized by Apple Can-ada in Montreal, Toronto and Calgary. The seminars highlighted the impor-tance of mobile strategy and showcased exemplary business apps. b

The public is now able to watch Evergreen Line construction progress on-line with the launch of webcams at two sites in Port Moody on July 18, 2013.

The images captured by the cameras will be avail-able on the Evergreen Line website at: http://www.evergreenline.gov.bc.ca.

The first camera will be located at the north tunnel portal area near Barnet Highway and View Street, where the tunnel-boring machine will be assembled and then launched in early 2014. The second cam-era will be at the site of Moody Centre Station at the current Port Moody transit exchange.

The Evergreen Line will connect the com-munities of Port Moody, Coquitlam and Burnaby for the first time through rapid transit with a direct connection to the exist-ing Millennium Line. It will support community

growth and development along the route and near the stations by providing better transit connections between regional centres and downtown Vancou-ver.

The new line will also cut commute times for busy families, reduce traffic congestion and reduce emissions. For instance, travelling on the Evergreen Line from Coquitlam City Centre to Vancouver will take 40 minutes, saving almost 45 minutes per day com-pared to driving.

    It will also spur eco-

nomic growth in B.C. cre-ating 8,000 direct and indi-rect jobs.

Funding for the Ever-green Line is a partner-ship between the Gov-ernment of Canada, the government of British Columbia and TransLink. The estimated project cost is $1.43 billion, with the Government of Canada contributing up to $424 million ($350 million from the Building Canada Fund, $67 million from the Public Transit Capital Trust Fund, and $7 mil-lion from the P3 Fund), the government of B.C. contributing $586 million, and other partners con-tributing $21 million.

TransLink is contribut-ing the remaining $400 million and will operate the system when it opens. b

McElroy, the leader in thermoplastic fusion tools, recently introduce a new socket fusion kit for use with popular polypropyl-ene-random (PP-R) pipe and fitting sizes. The kit offers an easy ordering op-tion for those working with 20 through 63mm diameter pipe and fittings.

The McElroy Polypro-pylene Socket Fusion Kit includes a 16 to 63mm socket heater, 20 to 63mm socket heater adapters, storage box, socket adapter tray, heater sling, heater bench mount, heater sup-port frame weld, socket

fusion specification chart, depth gauge tool and 1/4-inch Allen driver.

Contractors dont want to individually specify all the heater adapters and tools they might need on the job, said Chip McEl-roy, President of McElroy. With this socket fusion kit, the customer gets a great set of tools for the most popular pipe and fit-ting sizes. The storage box is designed to hold all of the adapters and tools in a very organized manner.

McElroys Socket Tooling equipment meets ISO 15874, DIN 16962

and DIN 8077 pipes and fittings specifications. McElroys Socket Fusion Heater included in the kit provides microproces-sor controls to precisely set and monitor heater temperature in all field conditions. The heater is also fully field service-able, including the elec-tronics. A long 20-foot power cord minimizes the amount of electri-cal connections that are needed to operate the equipment.

The socket adapters that are included within the kit features durable Teflon-coated surfaces, with the pipe diameter size and part number etched into the flat, non-coated back.

A profitable investment with an innovative drive concept.

Productivity Partnership for a Lifetime. The ASC single-drum rollers offer the highest compaction performance on the market - so you get a productivity boost from the very first day. Equally wise when it comes to efficiency and cost-effectiveness: the fully hydraulic drive concept.

The low engine position gives these single-drum rollers maximum stability and climbing ability. Excellent visibility for users and easy service access for you to cut maintenance costs. All these benefits turn this powerful innovation into a highly profitable investment.

A long-term investment but not really a movable asset.

Candice Bergen, Mem-ber of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar, on behalf of Canadas Environment Minister, the Honourable Peter Kent, recently cel-ebrated Canadas 1000th Ecogift south of Austin, Manitoba. This Ecogift consists of 59 hectares of prairie grassland and as-pen parkland that is ideal habitat for a large variety of birds. The land is also in the core range of the endangered northern prai-rie skink, Manitobas only lizard.

It is a great honour to recognize Canadas 1000th Ecogift in south-ern Manitoba and mark the success of the Eco-logical Gifts Program since its creation in 1995, said MP Bergen. Over the past 18 years, Canadians have donated over 150,000 hectares of private land valued at approximately $630 mil-lion. With this program, Canadians can take real action to protect and

conserve our countrys ecosystems for present and future generations. I encourage other land owners to consider the Ecogift Program as it would be wonderful to protect more land, es-pecially native prairie lands.

Since 1995, Canadas Ecological Gifts Pro-gram has encouraged private landowners to conserve ecologically sensitive land by do-nating it to a qualified recipient. Donors not only have the comfort of knowing that their cherished piece of na-ture will be cared for in the future, but they also receive significant income tax benefits.

The Manitoba Habi-tat Heritage Corporation is a proud partner in the Ecological Gifts Program and we will be respon-sible for conserving this prairie Ecogift in perpe-tuity, said John Whita-ker, Chairperson of the

Manitoba Heritage Habi-tat Corporation. Work-ing to conserve Canadas natural legacy through partnerships is what we do.

Donating a perpet-ual conservation ease-ment on this land has been a very rewarding experience, said Karl Gerrand, one of the pri-vate property donors of Canadas 1000th Eco-gift. It feels good to know that this land will remain undeveloped forever, and that future generations will be able to enjoy a natural un-touched wilderness that past generations have taken for granted.

One of the reasons I have valued having the land and want to protect it for the future is because of the opportunity it has pro-vided for my children to be exposed to the natural environment and the edu-cational opportunities it has provided me as a par-ent, said Trevor Pizzey, the other private property donor of Canadas 1000th Ecogift. Regardless of the season, observation of the natural environment is a great way for any of us to learn something new. b

Imagine crossing Cana-da three times end to end between Vancouver, B.C. to St. Johns, N.L. That distance 21,775 kilometers is about the length of shorelines in this country cleaned through-out the 20-year history of the Great Canadian Shore-line Cleanup.

After summer recre-ation, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is an ideal chance for every-one to make a difference in their communities by cleaning shorelines of po-tentially harmful litter. This fall, the communities will come together to keep their local lakes and rivers clean and healthy for every-one, including the wildlife and people who depend on them. Since 1994, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup has mobilized over 500,000 individuals across Canada to take ac-tion keeping our waters healthy for the wildlife and communities that depend on them.

By removing shoreline litter from waterways, par-ticipants in the Great Ca-nadian Shoreline Cleanup are helping prevent animal entanglement, water con-tamination and dangers for water-based activities such as boating and swimming. Over its history, the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up has helped to remove approximately 1.2 million kilograms of shoreline litter the approximate weight of 259 school buses.

Celebrating its 20th an-niversary this fall, the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up is a joint conservation initiative between Vancou-ver Aquarium and WWF. It is the largest direct-action conservation initiative in Canada. This falls Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up will take place from September 21-29, 2013. You can get involved in your very own community by adopting a local shore-line as a site coordinator, or by volunteering with an existing cleanup. Register-

ing is easy, visit Shoreline Cleanup.ca.

Shoreline cleanups can happen along the edge of any body of water - rivers, ponds, lakes, beaches and anywhere else where land and water meet. This year, the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF are aiming to have over 64,000 Canadi-ans participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up - and we hope youll be one of them.

CPIA is very proud to be a site sponsor of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup says Carol Hochu, President and CEO, CPIA. This national conservation effort is a great chance for everyone to get involved and play an important role in keeping our rivers and lakes healthy for our com-munity and the plants and animals that rely on our wa-ters for survival.

Shoreline litter does more than mar the beauty of our ecosystems; it puts wildlife and people at risk. The impact of shoreline lit-ter is far-reaching, says Cathy Cirko, Vice Presi-dent, CPIA. The good news is that through the Shoreline Cleanup, there is something we can do to be part of the solution. b

Although our histori-cal forefathers remain important figures in the creation of the country, Canadas growth and de-velopment is also a di-rect result of the unsung people who laboured with their machines to build the country we know today. And this story can be found in the hearts and minds of the 350 volunteer members who make up the Historical

Construction Equipment Association of Canada (HCEA), a group formed in 1996 dedicated to preserv-ing the antique equipment of the past while recording the construction history of Canada for the next genera-tion.

The non-profit HCEA has spent the last 17 years expanding and restoring their collection of artifacts, including the horse-drawn

equipment used at the turn of century through to the diesel equipment used in the 1940s and 1950s. With approximately 45 pieces of equipment, 75 per cent of which are operational, some artifacts are the only machines of their kind in existence. Our circa-1917 Buckeye Trencher is among the oldest pieces of construction equipment still around, says HCEA

Canada President, Frank Rooney. We are also very proud to have two built-in-Montreal vintage Dominion Shovels in operating con-dition. HCEA volunteer members have also spent more than three years re-storing a 1929 Adams #10 Grader, a labour of love that required the overhaul of every major component including the engine, trans-mission, gear boxes, and

    moldboard.Although many of the

HCEA members are from the construction sector operators, mechan-ics, welders, and others there are also lawyers, accountants, and teachers who are involved. Many realize that an effort should be made to preserve our Canadian construction heritage, Rooney says. HCEA Canada provides a unique opportunity.

The organization oper-ates in partnership with the Simcoe County Museum near Barrie, Ontario. The Museum provides a home for all the equipment, and is the site for shows and demonstrations. In addi-tion to more formal volun-teer duties, such as demon-strating and operating the historical equipment for visitors at annual events, members can also serve on a variety of committees, work at the Museum, or

take on a restoration proj-ect. Rooney says that there are an unlimited number of tasks to fit every kind of interest and skill level. Preservation of heritage is essential, he says. As my old uncle used to say, Well, son, hard to tell where youre going if you dont know where you came from. b

Primoceler, a microfab-rication company specializ-ing in laser micro welding and scribing of transparent materials, has developed the first sapphire-to-sap-phire welding process.

At Primoceler, we con-stantly expand technologi-cal boundaries, said Ville Hevonkorpi, Primocelers Managing Director. We

were the first to weld glass to glass, glass to silicon and now sapphire to sapphire. Sapphire-to-sapphire weld-ing is even more difficult than glass-to-glass weld-ing, and no one has been able to do it before.

Sapphires cost-effec-tiveness, durability, high melting point, chemical in-ertness, transparency and

capacity for optical trans-mission in visible, ultra-violet and near-infrared light make it a highly de-sirable material in several industries. For example, because of the materials resistance to heat and chemical erosion, sapphire substrates are currently used in the manufacturing of many LEDs for mobile handsets, televisions, auto-mobile headlights and gen-eral lighting. Now that we have developed this totally new technology, were an-ticipating that it will open new possibilities for indus-

tries, just as our glass-glass welding technology did, said Hevonkorpi.

Hevonkorpi was re-ferring to one of Primo-celers previous inno-vations, a laser micro welding methodology that produced an ex-tremely small Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ), expanding the potential for packaging fragile components, including under or inside glass, which had been a chal-lenge for manufacturers. We recently learned the benefits of glass to welding glass in medical devices, he continued. As glass is transpar-ent to infrared light and radio frequency waves, it makes new kind of implants possible. Also glass is highly bio-com-patible and so better for patients.

Sapphire has also yielded a great deal of benefits for medical de-vices. As an optical ma-terial, its durability is second only to diamond, which, in addition to the fact that it is chemically inert and non-throm-bogenic (will not cause blood clots), makes it

an excellent material for surgical tools, implants, braces as well as endo-scopes and laser win-dows.

Sapphire is widely used in sensors, different types of lenses and other devices, so there is a range of potential for this new technology, said Hevon-korpi. Companies that use sapphire for their prod-ucts will come to us with ideas of how sapphire-to-sapphire welding technol-ogy can benefit them. We always welcome custom-ers to challenge us and test their products.

The machine that Pri-moceler developed for the new process is somewhat similar to the laser-based welding machine previ-ously created to produce a small HAZ. The new ma-chine contains a fiber laser unit specially optimized for the welding process by Corelase and also features software and components developed in-house.

This is just another innovation in a line of in-novations by Primoceler, said Hevonkorpi. Well continue to be the pioneer in micromachine develop-ment. b

Ritchie Bros. Auction-eers (NYSE and TSX: RBA), the worlds largest auction-eer of farm, construction and other heavy equip-ment, set new Company re-cords during an unreserved public auction in Saska-toon, SK on August 7, 2013 by selling 135 combines for

more than CA$15.5 mil-lion. The Company broke its records for the largest number of combines ever sold at a Canadian auction as well as for the high-est gross auction proceeds for total combine sales at any Ritchie Bros. auction around the world. In to-

tal, more than 1,475 items were sold in the auction for more than CA$26 mil-lion. Every item was sold to the highest bidder, re-gardless of pricewithout minimum bids or reserve prices. Bids were made in the auction on-site, online in real time at www.rbauc-

tion.com or by proxy. The agricultural econ-

omy in Western Canada is very strong right now so theres high demand for quality new and used equipment. Thankfully, we were able to meet that need with the most combines weve ever sold in one of our Canadian auctions along with a great selection of other agricultural equip-ment, said Jordan Clarke, Regional Sales Manager, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. We witnessed strong participation locally, from across the country and around the world for al-most all equipment catego-ries featured in the auction. This Saskatoon auction showcased our ability to at-tract some of the largest ag-ricultural equipment on the market today. We want to thank all our customers for putting their trust in Ritchie Bros. and our unreserved auction method.

More than 3,050 bidders from 17 countries, includ-ing all Canadian provinces and one territory, regis-tered to participate in per-son or online in the auc-tion. Bidders from outside Saskatchewan purchased more than CA$10.5 million or 40 percent of total gross auction proceeds. More than 1,450 of the bidders taking part in the auction registered to bid online and purchased more than CA$8.5 million of equip-ment available online.

Equipment in the auc-tion was sold on behalf of

over 200 sellers, including a selection of late model combines and headers for Regina, SK-based Youngs Equipment Inc., an agricul-tural equipment dealer spe-cializing in Case IH equip-ment.

We regularly use Ritchie Bros. as an exten-sion of our sales depart-ment, and what they bring to the tableaccess to customers who we may not typically deal withmakes them a valued part-ner to our business, said Chad Jones, Corporate Sales Manager for Youngs Equip
