The John Deere 850K and 1050K Crawler Doz-ers impressed a jury of independent design spe-cialists from 41 coun-tries, and took home the 2016 Red Dot Award one of the worlds largest and most distinguished design accolades. In col-laboration with BMW Group subsidiary Design-works, John Deere devel-oped an industrial design language on the 850K and 1050K that delivered a consistent aesthetic to the entire dozer family. These machines boast in-dustry-leading toughness for mining, quarrying, road building and other large-scale operations.

The John Deere 850K Crawler Dozer boasts more power and weight for increased produc-tivity and an EPA Final Tier 4/EU Stage IV diesel engine for work in non-attainment areas. Deere included equipment owners and operators from the beginning of the design process to de-velop optimal solutions for the updated 850K Crawler Dozer. Key ser-viceability features, such as the innovative easy-to clean V-cool package, give the 850K best-in-class status in the ve-hicle market. The entire K-Series crawler dozer product line now has a spacious redesigned cab that is noticeably quieter and more comfortable. The overall design lan-guage emphasizes cham-fering to enhance visibil-

ity to the blade, side and rear of the machine.

The John Deere 1050K Crawler Dozer is a production-class ma-chine built to emphasize strength, toughness and durability. Because op-erators spend long work hours in construction machinery, product du-rability and user comfort are of the utmost impor-tance. Strong chamfers, surface breaks and stout overall proportions se-cure an active stance and directional assertiveness.

Manufacturers and de-signers entered a record number of approximately 5,200 innovations in the Red Dot Award Product Design category in 2016. The jury was also bigger than before, with 41 ex-perts coming together in Germany to assess each entry live and on site over a period of several days.

The 850K and 1050K werent the only John Deere products to win. The 8000 Series self-pro-pelled forage harvester from the Agricultural Division also secured a prestigious Red Dot Award. b

Terex Cranes has sup-plied, through its dealer Harsadhan International in India, customer Gam-mon India with two Terex CTT 331-16 flat-top tower cranes one freestand-ing with a height under hook of 92.6 metres the other using a special sin-gle tie-in collar to achieve an under hook height of 120 metres. The cranes will help complete the new $75 million Temple of the Vedic Planetarium (ToVP) currently taking shape on the banks of the Ganges in the holy town of Mayapur, West Bengal, India. When finished the ToVP will be the largest Vedic temple in the world.

The ToVP is an ambi-tious project representing the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) - or the Hare Krishna movement - now globally recognized as an authentic spiritual tradi-tion. Combining modern technology, ancient sci-ence, timeless wisdom

and lively culture, the Temple promises to be a popular spiritual destina-tion.

The two Terex cranes have another year or so on site before work at the temple is finally complete and in particular its main centrepiece dome which will stand at a height of 113 metres - two metres taller than Londons St Pauls Cathedral and 40 metres higher than the Taj Mahal, Agra.

This main dome hous-es the Vedic Planetarium providing visitors with a tour of the various regions of the cosmic creation. Beginning at the lower planets, pilgrims travel up through the earthly realm and then onto the higher planetary systems before passing beyond the boundary of the mate-rial universe. Within the spiritual realm, visitors view the various planets, before finally arriving at the topmost abode of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna.

Construction of the ToVP had certain restric-tions making it more dif-ficult to complete the con-tract. The main challenge was that the cranes were not allowed to be fixed to the temple structure. This meant specifying one freestanding crane and one with a collar which is fixed into the ground us-ing ground anchors. The pre-tensioning equipment for the collar has been specifically designed in-house by Mr. Goverdhan Bhutada, Head of Plant, Gammon India. Tower cranes with collars tend to be used when construct-ing curved structures such as cooling towers, but rarely on regular shaped buildings.

The Terex CTT 331-16 with HD23 tower was chosen because of its im-pressive 92.6 metres free standing height which can be extended to 120 metres when fitted with just one collar. The col-lar is located at a height of 70 metres allowing the crane a further 50 metres to climb before reaching its maximum operating height. The free standing crane uses four slightly larger 2.32 metre square

HD23 26.6 tower section at the base. Above these eleven, 2.28 metre square cross-section towers were used. All are six metres long, the smaller sections weighting 4,823kg includ-ing ladders, platforms and assembly equipment.

Both cranes have 70 metre jibs capable of lift-ing 3.5 tonnes at the end of the jib. The CTT-331-16 has a maximum jib length of 75 metres and can lift up to 16 tonnes at a maximum radius of 22.4 metres. On site the cranes have been lifting

re-bar, concrete, stainless steel formwork panels which form the shape of the dome and finally a Ka-lasa which will be at the domes pinnacle.

As well as being unable to tie the cranes into the structure and having to design the collar and pre-tensioning cables, the site was difficult to reach be-ing surrounded by water on three sides Mayapur is on the Ganges river the confluence point with the river Jalangi. Many of the materials and equipment used has been transported

by water boats which are often used to move items in this part of India.

Given the specific tow-er crane requirements and restrictions, the great 93 metre free-standing height of Terex CTT 331 enabled us to complete the con-tract, said Lucia Canali, Application Engineering Manager, Tower Cranes. Both cranes have per-formed faultlessly since the start of the contract and the contract should be finished on schedule. b

Komatsu America Corp., introduced the new D155AXi-8 Radio Contr-oldozer, Komatsus first radio controlled machine with intelligent Machine Control technology. It is the latest addition to the next generation of machine control and dozer technol-ogy.

The D155AXi-8 Radio Control dozer is ideal for applications where cus-tomers may want to re-move the operator from the machine and still maintain high levels of ef-ficiency and productivity, said Sebastian Witkowski, product manager, Komatsu America Corp. This dozer meets customer demands in those applications, while utilizing Komatsus proven, automated, rough-cut-to-finish-grade technol-ogy, Witkowski said.

For many operators, the ability to feel machine re-sponse to blade load is an important factor in effec-tive dozing. This is natu-rally difficult for a radio

control application where the operator is separated from the machine. The D155AXi-8 RC dozer is unique among radio con-trol dozers thanks to the enhanced intelligence that automates operation from heavy dozing to fine grading to efficiently doze material. The D155AXi-8 RC has the ability to sense and control blade load, op-timize the start of the cut, and minimize track slip.

Powered by a 354 HP Komatsu SAA6D140E-7, Tier 4 Final emissions certi-fied engine, the D155AXi-8 emits 80% less nitrogen oxides (NOx) than its Tier 4 interim predecessor. The variable geometry, turbo-charged and after cooled, 15.24 litre diesel engine features Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF) and Selective Catalytic Re-duction (SCR) systems and achieves fluid-neutral fuel economy.

An automatic gearshift transmission and lock-up torque converter team up

to select the optimal gear range, depending on job-site conditions and load. They are designed to pro-vide maximum operation efficiency. The electroni-cally-controlled transmis-sion locks up the torque converter to transfer en-gine power directly to the transmission, eliminating horsepower loss and cut-ting fuel consumption by up to 10%.

The patented Sigmadoz-er blade, designed to dig and roll up more soil at the blades centre, holds more material, reduces digging resistance and dozes up to 15% more soil while using less power, compared to a typical semi-u blade.

The D155AXi-8 radio control dozer, whether rented, leased or pur-chased, is covered by the Komatsu CARE program for the first three years or 2000 hours, whichever comes first. Komatsu CARE includes scheduled factory maintenance, a 50-point inspection at each service, and two complimentary Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter exchanges and DEF tank flushes in the first five years. b

Portsmouth, UK-based Rapid Response Solutions has taken delivery of a 300t hydraulic skidding system, the only one of its kind in Europe, from Canadian manufacturer Hydra-Slide.

Lifting, transport and storage specialist RRS will initially put the product to use for installation of trans-formers at electrical sub-stations, but Paul Barber, managing director, fore-sees its widespread use on a variety of projects.

He said: We had quoted for the electrical substation job, for which we knew the Hydra-Slide system was best suited, so in the short-term it made sense to proceed with the order upon award of the contract. Additional elec-trical substations, large machinery manufacturers and shipping firms will be future targets for the prod-uct, while I expect it to open doors to joint venture projects with our tier one partners.

The HT300 hydrauli-

cally powered heavy track skidding system, like its 500t capacity big brother, is one of the most cost-ef-fective and accurate tools for moving, loading or un-loading all types of heavy loads. It is frequently used to move transformers, gen-erators, compressors, pres-sure vessels and machines where a rigid, load carrying track is required.

Barber said: We looked at all the models, including the HT500, but felt the 300t system was the most ver-satile. We are hoping that moving forward we will have a requirement for a second, larger system but we will probably choose the 1,000t unit [the HT1000 Tri-Rail], capable of push-ing 1,000t while maintain-ing an eight-inch profile.

Janine Smith, vice presi-dent at Hydra-Slide, said: We are very excited about RRS investing in the HT300 system. We know from ex-perience how much this equipment can benefit their business. It will increase the

number and type of projects theyll be able to take on and it will set them apart from their competition.

The 300t heavy track skidding system is the only unit of its kind Hydra-Slide has sold into Europe. There are other models of Hydra-Slide skidding systems in the UK, while similar-sized and larger models are more prevalent in mainland Eu-rope. Hydra-Slide has Eu-ropean customers in Portu-gal, Georgia, France, Italy, Russia and Iceland.

The product represents a great fit with our existing range, said Barber. We are developing our proj-ects division to increase the services available to our customer base and are continually led by those customers into new areas. This system will reduce the manpower required to carry out certain lifting and moving tasks using tradi-tional methods.

Smith explained that as RRS already has an experi-enced and qualified rigging crew it will take minimal ex-posure and training for them to be confident in the safe operation of the HT300. She said: Hydra-Slide skidding systems are designed for sim-plicity with the operator in

mind. Reputable and consci-entious transport companies know that safety is the most important aspect of any job.

Barber said: Before or-dering the system I spent a lot of time researching the different types of equip-ment available on the mar-ket to carry out this type of work. I had numerous conversations with Hydra-Slide, asking questions about the system, how it worked, how easy it was to operate, how easy it is to maintain, their experi-ence in the marketplace and their engineering abili-

ties. I was really impressed with the responses I was getting. Nothing was too much trouble. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience, and were hap-py to share it with me.

The HT300 included 50 feet of double track and four skid shoes. The push cylinders and all connecting hardware came packed con-veniently in a steel toolbox for storage. RRS also ordered an Enerpac 700 bar, sole-noid-controlled split flow pump system, which will be used to operate the jacks on the skidding system.

Barber explained that the pump can also be used to operate the jacks needed to lift the load to get the skid-ding system under the load. The pump is a synchronised system with electronic con-trol, allowing one operator to activate four jacks simul-taneously or individually. The synchronised system ensures the pressure in each jack remains equal. The En-erpac pump can be utilised on a variety of jacking op-erations using Rapids pad, wedge and pulling jacks. b

The new Commando DC130Ri a rubber tired compact size top ham-mer drill rig - is the latest addition to Sandvik Con-structions surface drilling product offering. The new machine includes a large number of upgraded fea-tures developed through consultations with custom-

ers, while the foundation of the unit is based on the se-ries of drill rigs launched in 1988. It is in fact the years of experience that guaran-tee a versatile, highly pro-ductive drill rig combined with intelligence and top-rated mobility.

Modular design and practical layout of compo-

nents, new efficient rock drill and a new intelligent control system with large on-board touch screen, are the core features of the new machine. The fully remote-controlled, hydraulic and self-propelled compact size drilling unit, with 4-wheel carrier, is designed for drill-ing 22-45 mm holes. But this isnt all; the new Com-mando DC130Ri has been built on the feedback re-ceived from customers that has resulted in nearly 100 practical changes and up-grades that make this unit

really a user friendly - must have - drill rig.Tougher than ever, with high performance and versatility

A completely new RD106 rock drill providing a high 5.5 kW output pow-er, and a new intelligent drilling control system, form the basis for Com-mando DC130Ris high penetration rates. Perfor-mance is further enhanced with the machines large drilling coverage area, and a new forward pointing feed that allows it to drill

closer to structures than before. The machine also possesses the functional-ity to have roll-over for the feed, change drill steels on the rock drill, and to adjust the drill rig to challenging environmental conditions with additional appliances such as the fuel powered engine heater. All this en-sures that the Commando DC130Ri is a truly versatile drill rig that is easily adapt-able to changing job sites, and different drilling appli-cations. These include road construction, demolition works, secondary break-ing, foundation drilling, trenching, shaft sinking as well as dimensional stone quarrying.First intelligent compact class drill rig

The new intelligent control system of the Com-mando DC130Ri provides modern machine control features that until now have been found only on larger drill rigs. Intelligent engine control provides operating cost savings through lower fuel con-sumption by optimizing the engine power based on actual requirements. The advanced drilling control guarantees smooth drilling, and is gentle to drill steels. High performance is further enhanced by being able to increase percussion pres-sure while drilling without sacrificing rock tool life.

The 7 (175 mm) on-board touch screen enables effective monitoring allow-ing changes to machine

functions. It provides dif-ferent views for adjust-ment, aligning and drill-ing, as well as diagnostics for trouble shooting pur-poses; a practical feature that helps the operator to accomplish the work re-quired even more easily and smoothly. The Com-mando DC130Ri may also be equipped with several optional control system features, such as the torque control and automatic feed-percussion-follow-up, which enables automati-cally adjusted drilling in varying conditions. Addi-tionally, the new control system enables the use of the TIMi aligning and in-clination system as well as the SanRemo remote moni-toring service.Mobile and well balanced

In machines of this size class mobility, transport-ability and stability are essential features that re-ally count. From its initial development, the very first Commando was built to meet these requirements. Being of compact-size and light-weight construction for easy transportation, the new Commando DC130Ri is equipped with four high-torque tramming mo-tors, and skid steering that makes the unit extremely mobile. Commando DC130Ri has a completely new modular design and com-ponent layout that allows easy reach to all service points and components. The whole carrier is divid-ed into four main modules, which can be dismounted when making major over-hauls. Furthermore, the

better collective placement of the hydraulics, and opti-mized location of the elec-trical cabinet, has allowed the hosing to be significant-ly reduced and the electri-cal wiring minimized. A completely new cover system has two large side doors with gas springs, and a removable middle roof section that provide easy, and two-direction access, to all service points.

Kobelco Construction Machinery U.S.A. Inc. (or KCMU) held a grand opening on June 2 for its new hydraulic excavator plant built in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, USA. KCMU is the U.S. subsidiary of Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

Among the approxi-mately 130 attendees was the Honorable Takashi Shinozuka, Consul Gener-al of Japan in Atlanta; Jen-nifer Noel Fletcher, South Carolinas Deputy Secre-tary of Commerce; Tony Allen, South Carolina De-partment of Commerce; David Britt, Spartanburg County Council and Chair-man of the Economic De-velopment Committee; Hiroshi Sato, Director and former Chairman of Kobe Steel, Ltd.; other relevant officials; and representa-tives from local

The new U.S. plant in Spartanburg County has been in operation since March, 2016, but the grand opening cer-emony marks the start of full-scale production. The plant has initially begun manufacturing fuel-effi-cient 20-ton class excava-tors, for which demand is the highest in the U.S. market. KCMU plans to gradually increase pro-duction volume and ex-pand the production menu. The new plant will actively undertake the same production improve-ment activities that have been implemented in Ja-pan and will utilize the companys manufactur-ing capabilities to produce competitive products.

With the full-scale op-eration of the Spartanburg Plant, Kobelco will now be able to reduce produc-tion lead time for its North American customers, bet-ter accommodate market needs; expand the range of cross-sourcing chan-nels, and establish an op-timum production struc-ture throughout the entire Group. b

Pembina Pipeline Cor-poration is pleased to an-nounce a joint feasibility study with the Petrochem-ical Industries Company K.S.C., a subsidiary of the Kuwait Petroleum Corpo-ration, for the evaluation of a world-scale combined propane dehydrogenation and polypropylene up-grading facility in Alberta.

This Project represents an opportunity to develop crucial new market de-mand for propane in the Province of Alberta. Over the past decade, approxi-mately 85 percent of Al-bertas propane produc-tion has been exported across North America. Developing Alberta based value-add infrastructure will increase local pro-pane demand benefit-ting Albertas oil and gas producers, as well as the Province, by increasing regional economic activity and tax base. The Project could consume approxi-mately 35,000 barrels per day of propane and pro-duce up to 800,000 metric tonnes per year of poly-propylene.

The polypropylene would be transported in a pellet form to markets across North America and internationally. Poly-propylene is one of the worlds most commonly used polymers, traditional uses include automobile plastics, medical supplies, home appliances, trans-parent containers as well as numerous other appli-cations.

With access to the larg-est supply of propane in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, Pem-bina is ideally suited to fa-cilitate the development of this Project. Once the con-struction of Pembinas re-maining third fractionator is complete, Pembina will have over 200,000 bpd of fractionation capacity and will control approximately 60,000 bpd of propane sup-ply in the Fort Saskatch-ewan area, as well as ad-ditional supply originating from Empress, Alberta.

Pembina and PIC will undertake a detailed tech-nical, financial and com-mercial study to confirm if the development of the Project is economically

feasible and aligns with each partys respective investment criteria. This study is expected to take approximately six months, followed by Pembina and PIC approval to proceed to Front End Engineering Design. The final invest-ment decision is expected to be made by the middle of 2017. Subject to regula-tory, environmental and Pembinas Board of Direc-tors approval, the Project is expected to be in service by 2020.

This Project poten-tially builds on both Pem-binas position as the larg-est supplier to Albertas existing petrochemical industry, as well as be-ing one of Canadas lead-

ing energy infrastructure companies, said Mick Dilger, Pembinas Presi-dent and Chief Executive Officer. Developing this Project represents another natural extension of our natural gas liquids value chain and is a logical step for additional seamless in-tegration with our existing asset base.

PIC is very excited to be evaluating the feasibil-ity of the Project, said Mohammed Abdullatif Al-Farhoud, PICs Chief Ex-ecutive Officer. Alberta represents a very attractive market to develop large-scale petrochemical infra-structure, as it is supported by long-term feedstock se-curity, a supportive local government and comple-ments the existing asset base of a number of PICs and related companies op-erating in Alberta. b

Pembina Pipeline & PIC Evaluate Facility In Alberta


The Forest Products As-sociation of Canada (FPAC) welcomed the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM) new Innovation Action Plan, calling it an important step towards a low-carbon economy.

Following an all-day meeting yesterday in Daw-son City, Yukon on the future of Canadas forests and forest products sec-tor, the CCFM announced

a renewed commitment to enhance innovation and industry transformation, including the Action Plan that outlines how Canadian jurisdictions will better work together on innovation and bio-economy initiatives.

Under the three pillars of collaboration, engage-ment and mobilization, the CCFMs Innovation Action Plan outlines how jurisdic-tions will work together

to help the forest sector achieve its potential in ar-eas such as bio-products and building with wood, competitiveness and sus-tainability.

This Action Plan recog-nizes the shared opportunity before us to continue to trans-form Canadas forest sector into an even bigger economic driver, said Derek Nighbor, FPACs CEO. We welcome this important government partnership.

The CCFM, which in-cludes cabinet ministers from across the country who are responsible for forests, also committed yesterday to various ac-tions on climate change, environmental reputation, indigenous participation in the forest sector, all of which are important issues to the FPAC member com-panies.

The CCFM also reiter-ated its intention to again partner with FPAC to de-liver two Skills Awards for Aboriginal Youth. The awards, which are each worth $2,500 and have been handed out since 2012, encourage Aboriginal workers to consider careers in the forest sector. b

Kubota Corporation, Osaka, Japan, entered into an agreement to purchase Great Plains Manufactur-ing, Inc., based in Salina, Kansas. Once complete, the purchase will expand the long-time alliance with Land Pride and will include all five Great Plains divi-sions with multiple facili-ties in Kansas and a manu-facturing plant in Sleaford, England.

Since 2007, Kubota has worked closely with Land Pride to provide quality, performance-matched im-plements to Kubota dealers and customers across the U.S. and Canada. Through our Canadian marketing al-liance, weve learned that Land Pride products are a great fit for our tractors, our dealers and our brand here in Canada. This acquisition will strengthen our abil-ity to deliver high quality products to our customers and continue our strategic growth into new markets, said Kubota Canada Ltd. President, Bob Hickey.

For the foreseeable fu-ture, all five of Great Plains divisions will continue to operate as they have with their infrastructure intact and with respect to the dis-tinctiveness of the brands, trademarks and operation-al strengths. Doing so will allow employees, dealers and customers to interact with the same great com-panies they have come to know and trust.

Roy Applequist, Great Plains founder and chair-man, will remain on the leadership team to help guide the operations and facilitate a seamless transi-tion. My plan is to play a significant role in helping Great Plains become a vi-tal part of the Kubota fam-ily, said Applequist. Great Plains leadership position in the agricultural implement business has been earned by striving to do our best in satisfying our customers needs, and we are confident that teaming up with Kubota will allow us to continue to uphold this tradition.

Partnering with Mr. Ap-plequist in overseeing and managing the transition is Linda Salem, president of Great Plains Manufacturing. Ive worked alongside Roy for 26 years, and I intend to carry forward the entrepre-neurial and successful legacy that he has created at Great Plains, expressed Salem. Ive also worked collabora-tively with Kubota for over 10 years, which has allowed us to create a foundation for a strong working relation-ship that we will continue to build as we move forward.

The partnership fur-ther builds on Kubotas presence in Kansas where the company recently an-nounced the establishment of its North American Dis-tribution Centre in Edger-ton, Kansas, which serves as the primary distribution hub for Kubota parts and whole goods across the U.S. The companys ex-panding presence in the re-gion well-equips it to com-plete a seamless transition to ensure existing Great Plains and Land Pride cus-tomers continue to receive the same reliable and pro-fessional support they are accustomed to. b

The John Deere 944K Hybrid Wheel Loader is bolstering bottom lines by offering maximized pro-ductivity and efficiency through its hybrid-electric drive system designed to lower daily operating costs. Coupled with a 536 horsepower, PowerTech EPA Interim Tier 4 engine (IT4), the 944K Hybrid Wheel Loader can provide significant fuel savings over 9-yard3 loaders with conventional drivetrains*. The production-class wheel loaders brushless AC generators and motors, water-cooled brake resis-tors and solid-state power electronics deliver reliable, long-term performance to

quarry and large-load ap-plications.

Todays wheel load-ers demand increased up-time and reliability, and our customers asked for a solution that offers much more, said John Chester-man, product marketing manager, production class four-wheel drive loaders, John Deere Construction & Forestry. The highly fuel-efficient 944K Hybrid Wheel Loader delivers quick, smooth and respon-sive hydraulics, and four modular, independent wheel drives with elec-tronic traction control that provide customers with a complete loader solution built to last through the

most rugged conditions. The 944Ks hybrid-elec-

tric drive recaptures energy while slowing the loader when the operator lets off the accelerator, lessening the load on the engine and fur-ther reducing fuel consump-tion. During operation, the engine can run in a limited speed range of 1,200 1,800 rpm for maximum fuel ef-ficiency in Normal Mode or can run at constant speed so boom and bucket functions are powerful, responsive and quick in Performance Mode.

Offering strong pushing power and quick ramp-climbing ability, the 944K hybrid wheel loader helps operators maintain stock-piles and heap hoppers in quarry operations and other production facilities through its bucket width of 12 feet and breakout force of 103,388 pounds. No transmission shifting or clutches to engage enable smooth reversals and less spillage.

The 944K Hybrid Wheel Loader offers standard trac-tion control that automati-cally limits torque to any wheel when slippage oc-curs, increasing machine traction in poor underfoot conditions. With enhanced rim pull control, the loader prevents tire spin and slic-ing. The 944K also offers coast control to reduce service-brake wear and features such functions as dynamic braking in a hydrostatic transmission, slowing the loader and helping reduce service-brake component wear.

Inside the cab, the loader is quieter than other machines on the market. At only 108 decibels, noise is much less noticeable to bystanders, and cab noise is only 72 decibels for the operator. With the larg-est loader cab offered by Deere, the 944K offers a commanding view to the bucket, tires and ground hazards through floor-to-ceiling front glass. The machines joystick steering delivers smooth, low-effort control for fatigue-beating comfort.
