Copepods from Bedford Basin (Nova Scotia), mainly Pseudocalanus spp. and Temora longicornis, were fed different concentrations of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii. The feeding response of copepods to day-to-day changes in food concentrations involved adjustments of ingestion rate in <24 h; diel differences in ingestion rate were found in copepods acclimated to high food concentration but not in those acclimated to low food concentration. C and N content of faecal pellets was independent of food concentration, acclimation period to a given food concentration, and ingestion rates; a higher C:N ratio in faecal pellets than in the food suggested that N was assimilated more efficiently than C. On 9 October 1985 a daytime surface swarm of the euphausiid Euphausia lucens was observed and sampled in St. Helena Bay in the southern Benguela region. The swarm was monospecific, consisted of adults in pre-breeding condition and appeared to be feeding on detrital material. The swarm covered an estimated 46 ha, densities within it ranged .4- 150 × i04 individuals per m 3 and the swarm was estimated to contain ~5000 tonnes of euphausiids.
