Frank Mason was an entomologist who willed his collection of Coleoptera to the Academy. These papers consist of correspondence between J.A.G. Rehn of the Entomology Department and Mason's colleagues concerning his death in 1927, and 3 blueprints of storage cases and a floor plan, apparently for Mason's collection but not so identified.

FOWLER, HENRY WEED, 1878-1965. Catalog of Hyrtl fish skeletons, 1960s. 144 items.

Fowler's Catalog of World Fishes included a section on the fish skeletons prepared by Joseph Hyrtl, the famous 19th century Austrian anatomist. This section, consisting of a notebook and a typescript giving the classification, description, and location of known Hyrtl skeletons, with 142 drawings of the skeletons by Fowler, was placed 8. in this collection in 1963; Catalog of World Fishes.

Apparently archived from Fowler's office files, probably in 1963.

Darlington was a physician, soldier, U.S. Con- gressman, businessman and a prioneering 19th century botanist in southeastern Pennsylvania. His copy of I. Finch's Travels in the United States of America and Canada (London, 1833) contains pencil annotations and the author's presentation inscrip- tion.

Volume 1 is labelled: The Butterfly Book Number One - Map of East Thomasville, Georgia; a list of the butterflies found North of the Rio Grande; the tabulation of the Subfamily Lycaeminae; the diary from October 6th 1898 to April 9, 1899 and from February 1st 1898 to April 9th 1898; short description of one hundred of the butterflies I have caught and sketches of the transformations of the Milkweed Butterfly. 1898- 1899. Volume 2 is labelled: The Butterfly Book Number Two - List of signs etc.; the diary from April llth 1898 to April 23rd 1898 and from April llth 1899 to [January 19011 The temperature chart belongs to this book besides the incomplete map of Chestnut Hill - out [sic, our] yard and vicinity. Note inside front dover of volume 2: It must be remembered that when I wrote this record I was only 11 & 12 years old ... .

BIOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS. Papers, 1920s. 1 document case.

The journal Biological abstracts was originally proposed in 1923. Its first issue was published in December 1926. The Academy was one of four cooperating institutions to provide serials for indexing; the others were the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U. S. Surgeon General. The collection consists of papers dealing with arrangements for the Academy's assistance and participation.

GREEN, HAROLD TICHENOR, 1896- Papers. 1 8 containers.

Harold T. Green began work at the Academy in 1921 in public relations, and created its Exhibits Department in 1929; he continued as its head until his retirement in 1964. Green not only created many of the dioramas in the Academy's museum, he participated in some 25 of the expeditions which brought back the materials with which the dioramas were created. The collection, unprocessed but accessible, contains diaries, field notes, photographs, and drawings.

Fowler's paper was prepared 1919-1920, based on all the fish specimens from the U.S. Exploring Expedition remaining in the U.S, National Museum at that time. Case 1 contains Fowler's 2p. summary of the paper, the introduction and list of islands visited, the description of species (pp.35-330) a geographical index and the first part of the text; Case 2 contains the rest of the text; and Case 3 contains the manuscript and a reprint dated 1940.

William W. Cadbury was a Philadelphia Quaker doctor who spent his professional life as a medical missionary in China, where he established a garden of orchid plants. The paintings in this collection were commissioned by Dr. Warder from a painter known only as "Gomez," during his internment by the Chinese during World War 11. The collection includes the paintings, correspondence, notes on plants, lists of species, photograph~s, maps, and biographical information.

Manuscript on the plants of Cape May County, New Jersey, arranged taxonomically, bound, 158 pages and a photocopy of a typed transcript of 177 pages, made by MIldred D. Hiers and dated June 30, 1948, with annotations probably by Mrs. Hiers. The topy was made from a typed original owned by Robert C. Alexander, on April 21, 1965.

The collection's provenance is complex; the manuscript was apparently received by the Cape May Geographical Society from the personal papers of Otway Brown at his death, and was deposited in the Academy archives by Horace G. Richards, president of the Geographical Society, in 1954.

LAESSLE, ALBERT, 1877-1954. Sculpture and papers relating to them, 1906-1985, 16 items.

Albert Laessle was a Philadelphia sculptor wha studied with Charles Grafly and shared Grafly's studio at 20th and Cherry Streets, Philadelphia. His best-known Philadelphia work is probably the standing "Goat" in Rittenhouse Square. The Academy's sculptures are the following: "Turtle and Prey" (1906), "Turning Turtle" (1906), "Polar Bear standing" (1908) , and "Victory" (1918) . The collection also includes a medal designed for the University of Pennsylvania for merit in architec- tural ornamentation (1919), and four photographs found in the ~cadem~'s Exhibits Department in 1982, and identified by the archivist as Laessle and Grafly.

"Turning Turtle" and "victory" given to the Academy by Laessle's son, Paul Laessle, in 1980; "Turtle and Prey,'' "Polar Bear Standing'' and the medal given by Paul Laessle in 1985.

Album probably compiled by Hawkins, which contains original drawings, photographs, manuscript and reproductions of manuscripts, and newspaper clippings, in bound volume with title-page bearing the imprint of D. Appleton, New York. Waterhouse Hawkins mounted the skeleton of Hadrosaurus foulkii, found in Haddonfield, New Jersey in 1858 and identified by Joseph Leidy, in 1868.

The collection consists of paintings in watercolor or wash and pen-and-ink drawings, primarily made to illustrate federal publications, by such artists as Louis Agassiz Fuertes, Ernest Thompson Seton, and Allan Brooks. A photographic record of the entire collection, of color transparencies, color 2x2 slides, and black-and-white negatives, is available, provided by the Service in 1995.

Deposited at the Academy by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1976.

CLEM, ROBERT VERITY, Paintings, dxawings, sketches and scrapbook, 1960s-1980s.

R.V. Clem painted 32 gouaches to illustrate The Shorebirds of North America (1967) with text by Peter Matthiessen, a publication sponsored by Mr and Mrs Gardner Stout. The collection includes the gouaches, a small group of Clem's drawings and sketches, and a scrapbook kept by the Stouts on the publication of Shorebirds.

Samuel Seymour participated in the Long Expedi- tion to the Rocky Mountains, 1819-1820, as the party's artist. He painted these two watercolors on the expedition: "Fort Smith, Arkansas, 1820" and "View of the Chasm through which the Platte issues from the Rocky Mountains, 1821." The collection includes the paintings, photographs of them, and photocopies of the Mellon curator's correspondence with researchers about them.

Workbook of pencil drawings and 2 engraved plates of microscopical animals such as mites, lice, fleas, and mosquitoes, with a few identi- fying legends and 2 pages of text. The workbook is titled "Microscope 1831," and there are 19 pages of drawings, some with watercolor added, and 2 items laid in. With a letter of transmittal from the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, stating "Given to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Dr. J. Monroe Thorington.,.John Auldjo was born in Montreal, Canada in 1805; was graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1823; lived in Naples Italy for many years; became British Consul at Geneva, Switzerland where he died in 1886.
