The SUPPLEMENT Supplee Presbyter ian Church

From The Pastor It Changes Everything

J. Michael Shannon a professor of preaching said the following:

“A graduate student, who was a Christian, was having coffee with a fellow student, a seeker. They began talking about philosophy and religion. The Christian asked his fellow student what he thought about Jesus. The seeker said many fine things about Jesus, citing His examples and His teachings. As they began talking abut the Person of Christ, the Christian asked, ‘What do you think of the resurrection?’ ‘I’m not sure,’ said the seeker, ‘but I know this; If it is true, it changes everything.’ Indeed it does.”

This Easter like every Easter there will be people brooding about the real meaning of Easter all across the country. Some folks will be so focused on eggs and bunnies and chocolate that the spiritual aspect of Easter will be put aside. There will also be people who will, like the student described earlier, be engaged in their annual intellectual gymnastics wondering whether the claims of Christ are real or fictitious. That process can be a very brief moment in time or one that percolates until a conclusion is reached. Ultimately, as in the conversation between the two students, the meaning of Easter comes down to that all important question— “What do you think of the resurrection?” Here are some important distinctives of the Christian faith that directly apply to the veracity of resurrection.

1. Christianity is the only faith that believes in a saviour who rose from the dead. If that is not true would there be so many Christian (believers) in the world today?

2. The Bible, the most published book in human history, affirms Jesus’ bodily resurrection. The mere number of people who read the Bible says a whole lot about its trustworthiness.

3. No one has been able to disprove the miracle of resurrection. As the text states it “the stone was rolled away.”

4. Numerous eye witnesses to the resurrection saw Jesus in his resurrected state.

5. The lives of countless people have been forever transformed by the news of Jesus’ resurrection.

Therefore as you anticipate Easter this year I would prompt you to ask yourself these questions: Has the knowledge of Christ’s resurrection changed everything for me? If not why not? Celebrating With You the Miracle of the Empty Tomb,

New Members

Classes Starting

Soon

Periodically throughout the year, Supplee offers an opportunity for those interested in learning more about us,

about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, about being Presbyterian, and about becoming a member of our church family through our New Members’ Classes. Whether you’re simply exploring church membership or definitely plan to join, these classes are for you. The schedule for the next series of classes is:

Class A will be a lunch meeting on Sunday, April 12 at 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. in the parlor. It will be a general introduction and time to share our faith stories, talking about what it means to be a Christian and a Presbyterian.

Class B will be a dessert meeting on Wednesday evening April 15 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the parlor. This will address specific questions about the Bible, prayer, the differences between denominations, and the sacraments.

Class C will be a dessert meeting on Sunday, April 19 from 6:30 –8:00 p.m. at the Hoagland’s. This meeting will provide time with some Session members and church leaders to talk about Supplee, our ministry opportunities, and the stewardship of time and talents.

The new members will meet with Session in the church parlor on Tuesday evening, April 22 from 7:45 p.m. to formalize their intentions for membership. These three classes will be repeated at different times throughout next year. To sign up for this fall’s classes, please call the church office, 215-646-4123 or speak to Pastor Hoagland.

Bring a Friend Sunday Ever want to introduce your friends and/or neighbors to the church you belong to? Has anyone asked you what exactly you do at your church? Or maybe you just have a friend or relative who seems lost and could use some of God's help? Whatever the circumstances, Supplee is having our Second Annual Bring a Friend/Neighbor/Relative to Church Sunday. It will be held Sunday, April 12, and all visitors who are brought by a member will receive a gift from the church.

Maundy Thursday Candles of Remembrance

On Maundy Thursday, April 2nd at 7:30 p.m., we will celebrate a time of remembrance for loved ones who have died in the past five years. If you want to participate by lighting a candle in honor of your loved one at the worship service, please sign up in the narthex or email ([email protected]) or call (215-646-4123) the church office by March 29th so that we may include the name(s) of the individuals you would like to have remembered.

Good Friday Service and Meal

Join us Good Friday, April 3rd at 6:30 p.m. for a simple meal, followed by a reenactment of Christ’s pilgrimage to Calvary. We will follow the cross as we walk around the circumference of the church and enter the Sanctuary to have our traditional Tenebrae Service which begins at 7:30 p.m. Please sign up in the Narthex if you will be coming to the meal.

Stewardship and Finance Committee

Means to Practice Stewardship All Year Long

If you watch TV, you may have seen advertisements by H&R Block, tax return preparers, telling us that it is “Refund Season” and not “Tax Season”. H&R Block emphasizes “refunds” because billions of dollars are returned to taxpayers in March and April whereas some of us end up owing taxes at this time each year. I also read that 33% of taxpayers, up from 28%, are using their refunds to either pay off debt or add to savings, rather than using it for spending.

This is an encouraging sign for our economy but made me think…Why don’t Christians take a portion of their tax refunds and give it to support their church? The Supplee Stewardship & Finance Committee is trying to encourage and recognize stewardship throughout the year. We are sure that most of us have plans already for our tax refunds, which we hope includes savings or paying debt. However, another option to consider is offering a portion of your tax refund as thanks to God for his abundant blessings by supporting His mission at Supplee.

Supplee could use these special contributions to defray the 2014 shortfall of $13,000 or to meet our 2015 budget for Missions which included an additional $5,000 over and above the usual 12% of contributions. We thank everyone for the financial offerings you have and will make and are especially grateful for the many offerings of your time, talents and treasures. At this time, prayerfully consider the financial blessing God has provided and consider returning a portion of your tax refund to His mission here at Supplee.

2 Corinthians 9: 8 “And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good.” Encouraging year round faithful stewardship…showing Christ is the cornerstone of our lives.

Lenten Mission Offering

We have set a goal of $15,000 this year for our Lenten Mission Offering, which we will be dividing between HOPE and Presbyterian Disaster Relief. HOPE International focuses on poverty alleviation through microenterprise development. HOPE’s vision is to enable sustainable economic development that results in significant and lasting change,

temporal and eternal, in the lives of many people living in poverty. The HOPE network consists of both microfinance institution (MFI) and savings and credit association (SCA) programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Where possible, HOPE works in conjunction with local believers and the local Church. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) the emergency and refugee program of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is a ministry of compassion and hope. PDA responds to natural and human-caused disasters that would otherwise overwhelm a community’s ability to recover. It is committed to walking with survivors in the long-term journey of recovery. PDA enables congregations and mission partners to witness the healing love of Christ through caring for communities adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic events. Although, after a disaster, life for many may never be as it was before, we are confident of God’s power to redeem, for “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it”. (John 1:5)

Breakaway by Evan Lehman

Our fundraiser season with Breakaway is fully underway this spring. As a youth leader, something that you want to do is provide students with unique experiences. A major draw of youth group for teens is the different places we go and programs that we participate in. There is a great deal of behind the scenes work put into figuring out how to provide as many beneficial and unique experiences for our youth without going over budget. The biggest factor in offsetting youth expenses is through fundraising. We just finished our pancake breakfast which was a great success and we are very thankful for all your donations. Coming up in the end of April will be our Annual Spaghetti Dinner. The event will be Friday April 24

th, tickets will go on sale several weeks

before and there will be more available at the door. I highly encourage you to come out for this event and bring your friends and family out as well. The more people we have at our fundraiser events the better. For our last fundraiser this spring we are going to be offering something new in the form of a car wash on May 9th . The majority of the funds raised will go towards our summer missions trip while the remainder will be used to keep costs low for all of our other events. Please make it a point to come out to one or all of our fundraisers this spring and support your youth group. News from the Nursery School by Karen Kohler

Last month we wrote in this Supplement how pleased we were with the mild winter. As those words were published, we were plunged into single digits and almost daily snow. So this month, we aren’t saying a word about weather! The Nursery School is back on track after our days off and late arrivals. We hosted our Pre-K daddies on Father’s night. The Older Pre-K

children made parachutes with Daddy, and launched them from the Sanctuary balcony with great success. We are always touched each year that whichever choirs might be practicing stopped to allow this highpoint of the evening, or delayed until we are finished. We are always so impressed by the loving cooperation and care the church has given to the school. The school truly is a mission of the church, and we are grateful for the love! The 4-5 Pre-K built wooden “creations” with Daddy, made out of our available wooden pieces, scraps, popsicle sticks, or woodsies, held together with glue and nails (Daddy, you did a great job overseeing the hammering!!) One of the boys told me they had created a ship – a flying ship (amazing, as they only had about 20 minutes!) The 3-4’s created self-portraits on head day, painted with their hands and feet on the appropriate days, and enjoyed Mousercising and a very healthy snack on Good Health Day. The 2-3’s loved their shapes unit as they drew, printed, glued and ate the shapes of the day. Thanks to all of the parents who brought in such creative, shaped snacks! We were all so happy to be able to play outside in the playground after the snow had (almost) melted. What a treat fresh air, sunshine, climbing and running are to a child! We look forward to April, hopefully with lots of time outside!

Troop 542 News by Kyle Higgins, Troop 542 Historian

On the coldest weekend in February, Troop 542 braved the elements to go cabin camping at Camp Rodney in Maryland. The adventure started on a Friday night, when

we got our cooking areas set up and, after an hour or so of work, settled down in our cabins to get rest for the long day ahead.

Saturday began with breakfast. Then the morning activities started, including an orienteering class and five-mile hike for the first year Scouts, and chess and cards for everyone else. After that, we made lunch and the afternoon began. Originally, the plan was to to hold a catapult building competition in the afternoon. But due to the cold and heavy snow, some patrols decided to stay inside, while others built their catapults, and others went on a short scavenger hunt. The forecast called for the snow to change to rain which would turn our cooking areas into a sloppy mess, so we cooked our dinners and then packed up our cooking gear. The evening also brought an excellent campfire and, eventually, a good night’s sleep.

Sunday morning came, and that meant it was time to pack up and leave. Because we had already packed our cooking gear, the adults collected all of our breakfast food and cooked breakfast for the Scouts using the kitchen in the cabin. An interfaith service was held, with a message on the topic, “A Scout is Friendly”, and everything was cleaned and packed to leave. Then, after a weekend in Maryland, the scouts went home, tired but looking forward to the next trip.

Boy Scout Troop 542 meets at Supplee Church every Monday during the school year at 7:30 PM and has fun outdoor activities every month. Check out our web site www.troop542.com or contact Scoutmaster Jay Eibner at 215-990-6651 if you’re interested. Boys who have finished 5th grade and are not yet 18 are eligible to join.

Each month we select members to receive greetings from the Supplee Church family. These are people who are temporarily unable or no longer able to attend church. This is an opportunity for us to let them know we think of them and miss their fellowship. You do not have to know the person to send them greetings. Please send a card, sign your name, and Supplee Church. This is a wonderful way to remind them that God cares and so do we.
