What is Nanotechnology?

• Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale.

What do the terms “superhydrophobic” and

“oleophobic” mean?

Super-Hydrophobic describes a coating that exhibits superior water repelling properties that exceeds 150 degrees of contact angle when measuring the sphere of a drop of water on the surface. It creates an angle of 165-175 degrees. Well-known windshield water repellents are closer to 110 degrees.

Oleophobic refers to the ability to repel oil and other hydrocarbons.

What are its composition?

How does it work?

It uses proprietary nanotechnology to coat an object and create a barrier on its surface. This barrier repels water, oil and other liquids unlike any coating seen before.

The coating is molecularly bound to the product surface at a nanoscopic level, which means it becomes inseparable from it and is as durable as the material it protects. Because the coating is one thousand times thinner than a human hair, it is invisible to sight or touch.

What are its features?

Applications and Uses

Super-hydrophobic coatings have important applications in maritime industry. They can yield skin-friction drag reduction for ships' hulls, thus increasing fuel efficiency. Such a coating should allow ships to increase their speed and range while reducing fuel costs. They can also reduce corrosion and prevent marine organisms from growing on a ship's hull.

Super-hydrophobic coatings have potential uses in vehicle windshields to prevent rain droplets from clinging to the glass.

The coatings also make removal of salt deposits possible without using fresh water.

Furthermore, super-hydrophobic coatings have the ability to harvest other minerals from seawater brine with ease.

Due to the coating's hydrophobic and self-cleaning properties, it makes it extremely difficult for a treated surface to harbor bacteria. This allows tools and surfaces to remain sterile, even after contact with contaminating fluids.
