Today is the day that Superman ditches the red tights forjeans and combat boots. Starting with a new JusticeLeague comic thats available now, 52 superhero titles byDC Comics will be refit over the next five weeks with new

costumes, new creative teams and 52 No. 1 issues.

Called The New 52 initiative, the move is beingchampioned by DC Comics co-publishers Jim Lee and DanDido as a way to help bolster sagging sales by updating

their aging franchises. The second largest comic publisher(behind Marvel) hopes to attract a new generation ofreaders that are more familiar with the blockbustersuperhero movies and video games than the actualcomics.

Storylines and origin stories will also change to make thecharacters more accessible to new readers. Superman, forexample, will no longer be married to Lois Lane, andBatgirl loses the wheelchair that shes been bound to since

the Joker shot her in a 1988 graphic novel. There will evenbe an injection of new multicultural and LGBT characters,including Batwoman, the first lesbian superheroine in aneponymous series by the two big publishers.

The initiative also addresses distribution, which is goodnews for fans that prefer reading comics on their iPadsand smartphones. All DC comics will now be availabledigitally on the same day that the print editions hit comic-book racks. Digital issues will run $2.99 and will drop by adollar after a month.
