Connecting Cambridgeshire aims to bringsuperfast broadband to over 99% of thecounty by the end of 2020. Most residentswho have not got it yet will be covered inthe current phase 3 (2018-2019) or are inscope for coverage in phase 4, which is inprocurement.

Following the recent BroadbandInformation Evening in Stilton, ConnectingCambridgeshire have provided somegeneral advice to help residents get the bestout of current broadband provision.

Residents can check their current andplanned broadband coverage using thepostcode checker on the ConnectingCambridgeshire website atwww.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk.This also has advice on how to upgrade tosuperfast broadband once it is available.People can also register their contact detailsto be updated when superfast broadbandgoes live in their postcode area.

Once you have upgraded to superfastbroadband, if you are not happy with thespeeds, find they vary, or have problemswith the service dropping out, you need totake this up with your Internet ServiceProvider. If this is BT you can make acomplaint atwww.bt.com/help/home/complaints.html. Ifthis does not help, you can contact theExecutive Level Complaints team [email protected]. It also helps to raise on-goingissues with your MP.

Some broadband problems can be causedby internal wiring. One of our long-standingbroadband champions has provided someuseful tips to help improve your broadbandspeeds on his website here:www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/tips-speed-up-broadband

Regarding mobile coverage, ConnectingCambridgeshire is aware that this is poor inmany areas and will be working with localcouncillors and parishes to carry out surveysto inform mobile operators of the demandfor better services.

If you have any further queries, please [email protected] including your full address andpostcode.

They will respond directly to residents whoraised specific queries,

A Tale of Two BridgesA14 PROJECT HITS MORE MILESTONES

The A14 upgrade hit two milestones inFebruary. A new bridge over the A1 nearBrampton was opened and the bridge itreplaces is being demolished. All theconcrete recovered from the demolition ofthe old bridge will be crushed and reusedon the project.

The Brampton Road bridge in Grafham linksBrampton and Grafham in Cambridgeshireand spans the current two-lane A1 dualcarriageway. It has been upgraded to anewer, longer model and is the secondbridge to be opened on the scheme.

The new bridge is 50 metres longer than theold one; it has to span both the widened A1and future A14 - 10 lanes of carriageway! It was officially opened by Brampton ParishCouncil Chairman Cllr Simon Jordan andhis family. Residents from Brampton andGrafham were invited to cross the bridgefor the first time in a variety of vehicles, including electric and vintage cars, motorcycles and bicycles.

The widened A1 southbound carriagewaybetween Alconbury and Brampton Hut isnearing completion. Once ready, traffic willchange carriageways so that work can starton the new northbound carriageway.

The diversion of gas, water, BT and otherservices continues; over 26 miles of utilitieshave already been moved and drainagesystems for the new carriageway are beinginstalled.

Most of the new bridges are now takingshape. Some of the new junctions, such asat Swavesey, will soon start to become moreapparent.

In spring, drivers using the A428 will startto pass under the new bridge at Girton. Someof the new side roads on the scheme will beopening in the summer.

Finally - spare a thought for thearchaeologists braving the British spring asthey continue to identify and dig the sitesof interest.

An Ancient TraditionWHY DO WE HAVE EGGS AT EASTER?

Many religions and cultures see the egg asa symbol of new life and rebirth. InChristianity, the hard shell of the eggrepresents the sealed tomb of Christ.

Decorating eggs is a very ancient custom inmany parts of the world. From thesepractices elaborate and costly works of artsuch as Faberge eggs were created.Cardboard eggs could be filled with smallgifts but solid chocolate eggs first came fromFrance and Germany in the early 19th century.

J.S.Fry made the first hollow egg in 1873,while the first Cadbury egg was made in1875 in dark chocolate. 1905 saw theintroduction of Cadbury's Dairy MilkChocolate, which led to a tremendousincrease in sales.

We now eat £13bn of chocolate over Easter, though this is less than at Christmas. SCANwon’t make recommendations but we wouldsay that the sale of 'fairtrade' eggs is a veryimportant contribution to incomes indeveloping countries. (The 'Divine' brandoften gets good reviews.)

Stilton Culture

For a small village, Stilton punches aboveits weight in so many ways we can be proudof. Not least has been the outstandinglysuccessful Skate Park. Now, nearly ten yearson, it has been formally transferred from itscharitable trust to Stilton Parish Council. Sowhat more appropriate time to look back onhow it came into being?

HOW IT CAME ABOUTIn summer 2004 a number of anti-socialincidents gave cause for concern, writesPeter Mitchell. We talked to the youthsinvolved; their claim was ‘there wasnowhere suitable for outdoor recreation.’

So a Youth Facilities ManagementCommittee (YFMG) was formed and inNovember 2004 a village survey was heldto canvass ideas. From the 45 replies it wasdecided to provide an ‘All Wheeled Facilityfor Stilton’ - a Skate Park for short!

But such things don’t come cheap, so someserious fund-raising began. By March 2008we had raised some £28,000 for Phase 1 ofthe project; enough to pay for the base andsurrounding fence. The YFMG became aregistered charity, the ‘Stilton Children’sand Young People’s Facilities Association(SC&YPFA). By the June we had raised afurther £50,000 towards Phase 2, enough topurchase 2/3 of the ramps.

The young people took the lead in thespecification and procurement of theequipment, meeting representatives of threespecialist suppliers: GBH Engineering,Gravity Engineering, and Park Leisure. After extensive discussions and a numberof site visits to view finished constructionsthey selected Park Leisure’s designproposal. The order was placed and theramps were delivered later in the year. Wemoved on to Phase 3.

Fund-raising continued; bythe end of 2009 £143,000had been raised, whichcovered the full cost of theSkate Park, a CCTV systemlinked to the CCTV centreat Huntingdon andfloodlighting, with a bit leftover to help with the runningof the Park.

Cllr Tim StokesTim Stokes passed away peacefully onThursday 1st March at the Sue Ryderhospice, having lost his courageously longfight with lung cancer.

Stilton has lost a true friend and advocate.Having moved to the village some sevenyears ago, Tim became a Parish Councillorin 2015 and joined the Stilton AmenitiesSteering Group at a critical stage in thePavilion project’s planning and fundraising.Tim's contribution was always appreciatedand thoughtful and based on hugeexperience. He always sought to solve aproblem rather than create a new one.

Tim's passion in life was music and, although you would never know it, he waswell connected and respected in the worldof music. He said that the eastern region of

the UK was the only one without a majormusic festival and his ambition was toarrange a ‘mini Glastonbury’ nearby. Eventhough gravely ill his mind was full of plansfor the future and for the future of Stilton. Both he and Bashir at The Angel Spice hadbig plans to revitalise The Tunnels as abespoke venue for music and family fun.Tim loved classic sports cars.

Tim was hugely supported by his sonPatrick, who suspended his LondonUniversity course in order to care for hisfather. This he did impressively well. Thecare at Sue Ryder was outstanding.

Tim was a very private person and alwaysunderplayed his talents, experience andgenerosity. He will be much missed. Thoseof us who knew him can be ever thankful. Our prayers, thoughts and best wishes go toPatrick and Tim's brothers and sisters.

Stilton in TuneBEGINNING OUR SECOND YEAR IN STYLE !

Sunday 11th March saw us complete ourfirst year of concerts at the Pavilion – howtime flies! It has been an exciting year forour venture and, thankfully, support hasbeen very good and has grown steadily. Thesupport has been good enough for me tostart planning for 2019!

Our type of music is hidden from theairwaves due to the Musicians’ Unionblocking its use because of the orchestralsounds produced by these wonderfulinstruments.

I am pleased to advise that we have donated£620 to the Pavilion after all costs have beencovered. Hopefully, this year will see thisfigure increase as I have confirmed thatdonations will be made to the end of thisyear at least.

Thankfully we avoided the snowy weatherlast month and Paul Carman providedexcellent entertainment with his playing anddry sense of humour. He even threw in acouple of songs - he is a good singer! Ouraudience size was down a little but I thinkclashing events and Mothers’ Day probablyaccounted for this as quite a few regularswere missing. Let’s hope that by the timeof the next music event, on Sunday April15th, the spring weather will be here as thesigns are about. We have another greatplayer and entertainer, Jon Smith, visitingus from Sheffield and I am sure he willplease our audience with his musicianship.

This will be our first ‘birthday’ so I amhoping that our support will break ourcurrent high of 62 people. The more whovisit the more I can donate to the Pavilion, the second phase of which is starting nowand will benefit patrons with new seating, blinds for the main hall and many otherfinishing touches both inside and out. Itshould certainly make this fine buildingeven more amenable and it is hoped thatlocal people will support the facility as wellas our social musical events.

Looking further ahead to May 20th we haveour first returning player in DutchmanDirkJan Ranzijn whose enthusiastic style ofplaying, along with quieter moments, isalways well received. Prepare to ‘rock’!

Concerts start at 2:30pm (doors open 2pm)and, with an interval for free refreshments, finish around 5pm. Do come and join ourmusic-loving group, you will be welcomedby our friendly team of helpers. Oh, the cost, just £7.50 per person! We look forward toseeing you at the Pavilion.

FOLKSWORTH SCHOOL- THE STORIES GO ON!

Once upon a time, there was a school fullof very excited people, for it was soon tobe World Book Day! In homes across thearea, parents, children and staff had beenbusy preparing costumes, as everyday itemstook on entirely new lives and meanings.

Unfortunately, just as the great day arrivedso did the snow. Would our heroes andheroines get their moment? Would thewhole thing have to be postponed?

No way - it would take more than that toput off our determined children and staff.

From Vikings and Fairies, to Animals andHeroes, the range of characters included wasas broad as it was colourful. Some childrenwent on to make moving pictures of theirfavourite characters, whilst others took partin the World Book Day quiz.

As the end of the day approached, everyonegot together in a celebration assembly to

share the efforts which had been made, andthe successes which had been achieved. Let'shope they all live happily ever after!

FOLKSWORTH PRIMARYSCHOOL PTA

As we write this we are looking forward toEaster, which is always a fun time in theschool. This year is no exception, with ourannual Easter egg hunt, chocolate tombolaand Easter colouring competition for thechildren to enjoy at the end of term.

Your continued support really does make adifference. We recently provided someSplash Suits for our youngest children(Acorn class) so they can make the most ofthe outside space all year round. In addition, with the help of IKEA we are working ona project that will improve the fun andeducational space for the children in thepeace garden and bandstand.

In the next issue we will have more detailsabout our Summer Fair so please look outfor that and save the date, Saturday 9th June!

From The Cabbage Patch

Easter in the GardenA CHECKLIST OF ESSENTIAL JOBS FOR THE LONG WEEKEND

WEEDING

Get them now! Many weeds germinate atquite low temperatures so will be appearing.Pull them up by hand, hoe them in, or digthem out. If you have a large patch use aweedkiller such as Roundup.

FEEDINGUse a slow-release fertilizer on beds andborders or enrich the soil with organic matter.

PRUNINGNow is the time to prune the roses and feedthem with special rose food. Also cut backthe buddleias.

LAWN

Of course, you checked the mower lastautumn, didn’t you! So you are happy thatit will work when you start it up. Set theblades high for the first cuts. Tidy the edges, spike it with a garden fork and apply a weed& feed mixture. If you have a moss problem, apply a moss killer when you see new greengrowth starting

WILDLIFEThe birds still need food and water as theywork at nest building. Clean out nest boxesbefore they show interest in nesting there.

Of course, all this presupposes the weatheris kinder to us than in the recent past!

Seal RescueThe recent stormy weather played havocwith coastal marine life. SCAN had the goodfortune to witness volunteers from Seal &Shore Watch rescuing a seal pup that had

become stranded high up on the beach nearCromer. We assumed the poor creaturewould be dead, but were assured that, onceback at the rescue centre, it should quicklyrecover and be returned to the sea.

Many readers will no doubt be visiting thecoast this year in the hope of seeing someseals, so here is some official advice:

1. Keep your distance. Seals can bite andsuch bites can take a year to heal.

2. Keep your dog on a short lead and DONOT allow it to approach a seal.

3. Seals do NOT need to be kept wet whenout of the water.

4. If you encounter an obviously strandedor injured seal, do NOT approach it. Ifyou’re on a Norfolk beach, call Seal &Shore Watch on 07498 597448.Elsewhere in Britain, contact Marine andWildlife Rescue on 01692 650338. Keepthese numbers in your mobile!

You can learn more about Seal & ShoreWatch on their Facebook page,@sealand.shorewatch.

This is a seal ambulance! Trained volunteers carefully recover the hapless pup to the careof the rescue centre. Note the heavy duty gloves. (Photo: Seal & Shore Watch)
