Super A magazine that recognizes creative arts programs in schools for students

with learning differences

Welcome to Super! Dear Readers, It is my pleasure to share with you this issue of Super, a unique magazine that recognizes outstanding creative arts programs for students with learning and developmental differences. This issue of Super

honors the Rebecca School and JCC Manhattan, as well as artists who submitted their work

individually. Featured artists include Samuel Banfield and Amy Rosenfeld. A variety of creative works, including graphic art, drawings, and photography, are included in this issue. The idea for Super grew out of my exposure to different learning styles and to the arts. Throughout high school, I was struck by the imaginative works of the students I encountered while volunteering at the McCarton School, which educates children and young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, and at an arts-in-education program in New York City. I became even more interested in producing this magazine while attending a camp for the arts and participating in a university psychology course. In addition, I volunteer regularly at the Friendship Circle, which serves children with special needs. I have enjoyed combining all that I have learned from these experiences while working on Super. The terrific team at Super helped to present the creative works in this issue. Super’s Managing Editor, Justin Karp, is a college junior who has volunteered at the NYU Summer Program for Kids (which serves children with attention deficit and behavior disorders) and in the New York City public school system; a national educational magazine has featured an article that he wrote about this volunteer work. Super’s Senior Editor, Harrison Gottfried, is a student at The Learning Clinic; he also is an avid photographer, with works displayed at the Yorktown Grange Fair and featured in this issue. Super’s Advisory Board consists of Laura Whitman, M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Marcia Surval Gottfried L.C.S.W., a parent consultant. I hope that you enjoy this issue of Super! Jenna Karp Founder/Editor-in-Chief

It is a new year. Seems like last year Was just yesterday. On my checks and Papers, I am still in Twenty-fifteen… What does that mean? The new year, have To write a new date… A new year… maybe I liked 2015; who knows What is in store in the new Year? Only one person Does: G-D. G-D has a crystal ball; And also knows who has Been naughty and nice. And is checking her crystal Ball more than twice, maybe Thrice; (3x). Seems like last year Was just yesterday. Maybe because this is Just the beginning and Twenty fifteen was just Two days ago… so it was just A few days ago… it is a new Year, just go with the flow!

Featured Poet: Amy Rosenfeld

I have decided not to make New Year’s resolutions. I made a resolution not to make Resolutions, for when I do They get broken, and Are not kept. I made a resolution not to make Resolutions… why, if they Get broken and are not kept. The best resolution is not making Any resolutions.

It is cold… brrrr… So far this winter, It has been warm, As warm as on A spring day in The month of May. It is cold…. Brrrr…. Frigid outside… No snow or ice, That is nice… But the temps Are dropping… My lips are chattering… And I am cold! What happened to the Warm days of December? I miss them now.
