Hell of a show When: February 15

Celebrated DJ Sigala, riding a wave built on the rip-roaring success of the Jackson 5-sampling earworm Easy Love and a succession of chart hits, is heading to town.

The dance DJ and producer is one of the most sought-after acts around right now, thanks to some deft sampling and input from collaborators including John Newman and Craig David. Certain to bring his biggest hits and perhaps a special guest or two, his Newcastle show promises much. O2 Academy, £17.43 o2academynewcastle.co.uk

A kind of Magic When: May 20-21

The Super League kicks off this month and with it the build-up to the third big Magic Weekend co-sponsored by NE1 Ltd at St James’ Park.

Magic Weekend is one of the biggest and best sporting weekends of the season, contributing £8m in direct economic impact to the city last year, when a record-breaking 68,700 rugby league fans joined the weekend-long party in and around the stadium.

This year’s event is set to be the biggest yet with all 12 Super League teams in action over six matches, including 2016 champions Wigan Warriors vs Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers vs Leeds Rhinos. With a fanzone and a magic atmosphere, it’s going to be another big weekend, so grab your tickets now while you can. www.rugby-league.com

Bianca del Rio, the self-professed ‘clown in a gown’ from TV’s wildly successful RuPaul’s Drag Race, brings her wicked new stand-up show, Not Today Satan, to the City Hall.

Specialising in acerbic insults and describing herself as a ‘hate guru’, del Rio’s show is uproariously funny and unapologetically naughty, chronicling her life in Los Angeles and the unusual challenges of making a living as a man in a dress. Move over Alan Shearer, Newcastle’s very first sporting hero was actually Dunston rower Harry ‘Hadaway’ Clasper, arguably the greatest-ever North East sportsman and the man for whom The Blaydon Races was written.

Now a poignant new play by Ed Waugh tells the extraordinary tale of the life and times of the champion oarsman who brought the World Rowing Championship to the Tyne in 1845. A treat.Theatre Royal, from £10, theatreroyal.co.uk

If you like your comedians with their tongue firmly wedged in their cheek, look no further than Al Murray’s pub landlord, whose cleverly satirical look at British culture can occasionally be uncomfortably close to the bone.

Get a Hedda When: February 16-March 8Continuing Northern Stage’s Queens of the North series in celebration of iconic female stories, Hedda Gabler offers up one of theatre’s finest female roles. Henrik Ibsen’s shocking and funny play explores the absurdity of living a lie as the gun-toting, horse-riding, party-throwing Hedda faces a choice of submission to her academic husband or taking control of her life after blackmail and scandal. Don’t miss political comedian and broadcaster Matt Forde, who’s heading to town having turned his anguish at modern political events into an award-winning current affairs show which is the toast of Westminster.

It’s My Political Party (And I’ll Cry If I Want To) delivers Forde’s views on what the hell happens next in our hokey-cokey political landscape, offering up a knowledgeable voice of reason (or bemusement - one of the two). The Stand, £15 thestand.co.uk

The recent launch of Resident Evil 7 set a high bar for developers to compete with, and the rest of the titles set to launch in the coming year must follow a demanding lead.

Nintendo’s newest hardware, The Switch, available from March 3, will bring with it new installments in both the Bomberman and Legend of Zelda franchises for a little nostalgia.

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will also expand their reach with entries from Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption - seven years in the making - and EA’s epic Mass Effect series.

Whatever your style of play, from first-person shooter to puzzle-platformer, 2017 is shaping up to be a big year - and may well turn out to be a defining one with so many key releases. Only time  will tell… GAME, intu Eldon Square, game.co.uk

Schmuck for a Night When: February 17Top stand-up, Hollywood actor and friend of the stars Omid Djalili is back in Newcastle with his new show Schmuck for a Night. Here’s what he has to say…

Why schmuck? I’m embracing the schmuck in me to take on the big issues of our day. Plus, it’s a word that ends with ‘uck’ which can only be a good thing.

Mind, you’ve mellowed haven’t you? I’ve become less frenetic. I used to dance every two minutes between the stand up. I can’t even remember why.

But don’t audiences miss the dances? Yes.

You’re in The Nutcracker with Morgan Freeman and Keira Knightley. How weird is the mix of film and stand-up? It doesn’t faze me. Years ago I went straight on stage in full costume from the set of The Mummy at Shepperton Studios. I was in full 1930s Egyptian prison warden garb.

Your acting CV includes work with Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt, Robert Redford, Johnny Depp, Mike Myers, Sarah Jessica Parker… Who’s been most fun? Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones as the father of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in Pirates of the Caribbean 3. His character shoots and kills my character and this seemed to bother him. And after each take he’d say, “listen, you do know I don’t mean this?” The final time he shot me he just stood over me and mumbled “we’ve all got issues… it’s all about mummy innit?” How right he was.

Bongo’s Bingo When: February 17

Bongo’s Bingo party stars The Vengaboys. Yes, you heard that correctly, we did say The Vengaboys - hitmakers of the 90s, kings of Eurotrash, and the people you’re most likely to run into at Pontins. Thought they’d been consigned to the bargain bin of history? Tough luck folks, they are still a thing and, with them, Eurodance continues to live the dream.

They’ll be bringing with them their ‘iconic’ reworking of Typically Tropical’s Barbados, the seminal We’re Going To Ibiza, and many more largely identical hits including Boom Boom Boom Boom! - the video for which, incidentally, has amassed more than 68 million views on YouTube (there is a reason for this, and it isn’t the catchy tune).

And now you’ve got that song on a constant loop in your head haven’t you? Sorry about that… Boiler Shop, £6, stephensonquarter.com

It’s the entertainment craze that’s sweeping the nation, but this isn’t bingo as your Nan would recognise it.

Bongo’s Bingo is the illegitimate offspring of an unholy coupling of traditional bingo and techno rave pimped to within an inch of its life with epic dance-offs, outrageous live acts, bizarre stunts and alcohol-induced mayhem.

Hosted by the rambunctious Jonny Bongo, the bingo is livened up with rave intervals, extravagant entertainment, and quite a lot of liquid refreshment.

Bongo’s Bingo prizes have been known to include a Porsche, a boat, a mobility scooter and boxes of Coco Pops, while surprise celeb appearances have included the great David Hasselhoff, vintage popsters S Club 7, and Ms Dynamite.

Busted, the boy band it’s okay to like, are back on tour and heading to town with their brand new album Night Driver and without their mates from McFly. The ongoing on again/off again saga of the pop rock trio has resulted in some pretty catchy hits, from the sass of What I Go To School For to the daftness of Year 3000. Their latest material sees the group return with a more mature outlook, and if recent single On What You’re On’s electro-fuelled style is anything to go by, their latest incarnation seems set to be the one that sticks. www.getintonewcastle.co.uk

Guaranteed to smash any New Year’s diet resolution, NE1’s latest Newcastle Restaurant Week in January was another record breaker, serving up a staggering 45,000 meals over seven days in more than 100 restaurants

Pleased To Meet You

Dinner dates

Since the first event in 2011, Newcastle Restaurant Week has grown into a bona fide foodie phenomenon, serving a remarkable 297,000 diners – that’s equivalent to the population of Newcastle, if you please!

The city’s foodies love the event so much, that over the five years it’s been running, we’ve spent a whopping £3.5m on Restaurant Week meals, which is a whole lot of steaks, Dover soles, and soufflés, folks.

The event is also a record breaker, attracting an extra 10,000 diners this year and 19.7% increase in revenue.

Little wonder that so many people now head to www.getintonewcastle.co.uk to get

the gen on where to eat, with a whopping 1.8m page views of Restaurant Week January 2017 offers in a little over a month.

The unparalleled growth reflects the dramatic expansion of Newcastle’s dining out scene, with the city now boasting more restaurants per square foot than any city outside London, which must make us the hungriest folks in the UK. Nice work, people!
