DescriptionSuper Firetemp® T board is an inorganic,incombustible material. Chemically, Super Firetemp®T board features a tobermorite crystal structure thatresults in exceptional strength and controlled waterof hydration. Super Firetemp® T board is composedprimarily of lime, silica, and reinforcing fibers. Theproduct is white, essentially dust-free, and containsno asbestos. It has been fire tested up to 2000°F(1093°C).

ApplicationsUses include 1 & 2 hour fire-rated enclosures aroundkitchen exhaust hoods and ventilation ducts. SuperFiretemp® T board meets the requirements definedby Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the National FireProtection Association (NFPA 96), and SBCCI. It isan alternative method of providing duct fireprotection instead of the traditional shaft wallenclosure construction around a duct. For designflexibility, JM also has the first approved grease ductenclosure that combines Super Firetemp® T boardwith Firetemp® Wrap.

AdvantagesSystem Design. Super Firetemp® T board is anOmega Point Laboratories and UnderwritersLaboratories (UL) classified board. The product isnon combustible and complies with 25/50 flame andsmoke requirements per ASTM E84.

Simplified Installation. Super Firetemp® T board islightweight. Cutting and fabrication of the boardaround ducts is easily accomplished, therebyminimizing labor cost.

Space Saving. Super Firetemp® T board is a singlelayer system with zero clearance to combustiblewhich makes it ideal for tight installations.

Tough Board. The board is self supporting and doesnot depend on the strength of the duct to supportthe weight of the fire protection system.

Attractive. The product’s sanded surface readilyaccepts oil-based paints, wall coverings and curedveneers.

Fire Rated Doors. Super Firetemp® T board beingstrong and rigid will allow for the installation oftypical fire rated inspection doors used in shaft wallenclosures (check local codes for applicability andapproval for use).

AdvantagesSimplified Installation. This transition provides flexibilityto the installer to utilize the installation benefits of theboard and wrap, while providing an approved greaseduct fire protection system. Use of this transition willallow for time or labor saving by maximizing installationefficiency and by providing flexibility for installation indifficult spaces. Before and after any transition followthe installation recommendations described for the boardand wrap products.

System Testing and ApprovalsThis transition using Super Firetemp T board andFiretemp Wrap has been fully tested against internalgrease duct fires (UL 1978), external fires (ASTM E119/UL 263), through penetration, insulated duct fires (ASTME814/ UL 1479), and surface burning (ASTM E84/UL723). Omega Point Laboratories (OPL) fire endurancetesting agency accredited by ICBO, BOCA and SBCCI(National Evaluation Services) in the United Statesperformed these tests and have provided referencelistings.

InstallationInstall board and wrap as described in installation guides before or after transition area.

At transition, install board, then butt inner layer of wrap next to board. Hold first layer of blanket in place by attaching ½”stainless steel band (0.0015” thick) 1 ½” from edge of blanket. Coat a 5-inch width of board, with Super Calstik™adhesive, adjacent to butt joint of wrap. Overlap the second layer of wrap a minimum of 5 inches over the board and incontact with the Super Calstik® adhesive. Overlap the blanket a minimum of 3 inches over itself. Attached 2 ½” longcoarse dry wall screws with washers (1 1/2” speed clips) every 8” OC and from 3-4 inches from the edge of each corner.Attach additional stainless steel bands over wrap as described in wrap installation guide. See Figure 1 for visual depictionof board/wrap transition.

1.03 System Description

A. A light weight, non-asbestos, calcium-silicate, fire-resistive board. This fire-resistive board is a two-hourenclosure system, with zero clearance to combustibles, when used with a listed and approved through-penetration firestop system.

Installation InstructionsPart 1 - General

1.01 Description of SystemA. This fireproofing system shall be a

complete system of Fireproofing materialssupplied as specified by Johns Manville.

B. This system is designed for application ongrease ducts as shown on the drawings.

1.02 Quality AssuranceA. Supplier Qualifications: The Super Firetemp

system as supplied by Johns Manville isapproved for use on this project.

B. Applicator Qualifications: Applicatorsbidding on this work represent that theyare fully apprised of Super Firetempproducts and application procedures.

1.03 Submittals A. Product Data: Submit copies of Super

Firetemp data and these applicationinstructions and drawings.

B. Samples: Submit samples of SuperFiretemp board, Super Calstik and othermaterials as requested.

1.04 Product Delivery, Storage and Handling A. Materials shall be delivered in packaged

lots, clearly marked with Johns Manville'sname, brand and type of material with ULor other labels as required.

B. Materials shall be stored in a clean, drywarehouse with careful handling to avoiddamage.

1.05 Job ConditionsA. Environmental conditions: while a warm

environment is desirable, Super Firetempboard may be applied in subfreezing or wetweather, if necessary. The only restrictionin subfreezing conditions is to provideenough heat to prevent the Super Calstikfrom freezing before it cures.

B. Ventilation: When Johns Manville SuperFiretemp is saw-cut in the field, workersmust follow personal protection asindicated in the product warning label orMaterial Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

C. Coordination: Fireproofing must becoordinated with other construction toavoid retrofits that would interfere with theintegrity of the finished fireproofing job.At the same time, the fireproofing shouldbe applied last to minimize the possibilityof incidental damage to the finishedsystem.

accordance with all published, applicableregulations by local, state or federalagencies that may have jurisdiction.

B. The Grease Duct Enclosure and throughfirestop penetration is listed underUnderwriters Laboratories under YYET andOmega Point Laboratories Classification16053-1in the OPL Fire ProtectionEquipment Directory.

C. The Grease Duct Insulation andFireproofing System complies with SBCCI.

D. For 1 & 2 hour rated assemblies, use 2"(51mm) thick Super Firetemp T.

E. The Ventilation duct Enclosure and throughfirestop penetration is listed under OmegaPoint Laboratories Classification 15053-1.

Part 2 - Product Information

such as drywall screws and a powerscrewdriver or nails and a power nail gun.

Part 3 - Installation

3.01 InspectionA. Verify that the ducts to be fireproofed are

as represented in the design criteria.

3.02 Job PreparationA. The metal duct must comply with the code

The enclosure is constructed of minimum2 " (51 mm) thick Super Firetemp T for a1-hour or 2-hour enclosure. The exterior of

the enclosure is permitted to be in directcontact with combustibles.

B. The installation of Super Firetemp boardmust be coordinated with otherconstruction work to avoid retrofits ordamage to the enclosure. Plan the worksuch that the enclosure will not have to beopened or taken apart after it has beeninstalled.

C. The enclosure must be located so that theinstaller does not have to cut into theSuper Firetemp to make room for adjacentequipment, pipe fittings, electrical fittings,etc. Verify there is sufficient room for theaccess doors to be removed so the ductcan be inspected and cleaned.

D. Super Firetemp board can be installed inany weather condition. In subfreezingtemperatures, provide enough heat toallow the adhesive to set before it freezes.The Super Calstik adhesive must be keptabove the freezing point to preventseparation.

E. It is important to have the proper tools.Super Firetemp board can be cut withordinary handsaws or power tools,however the blades will dull quickly. Usecarbide-tipped blades for maximum life.

3.03 InstallationA. Support the duct enclosure using a

conventional trapeze arrangement or simplyrest it on the ceiling support structures(Figure 1 & 2). The structures must becapable of supporting the weight of theSuper Firetemp boards and the weight ofthe duct assembly (Figure 4). Supportsmust be no further apart than 4' (1.22 m)O.C. When stiffeners are used on the metalduct, place the supports under theassembly so that the metal stiffenermembers are within 6" (152 mm) of thesupports (Figure 3).

B. For horizontal ducts the minimum clearancebetween the duct and the enclosure shallbe zero inches on the bottom, 1/4" (6 mm)(1/2" - 12mm for duct >24") on each sideand 1/2" (12 mm) (1"- 24mm for duct>24") on the top (Figure 4). Ifreinforcements are used for the particularduct, the spacing must be maintainedbetween the reinforcement and the SuperFiretemp board.

C. For vertical ducts, provide 1/4" (6 mm)(1/2" - 12mm for ducts >24") clearancebetween the duct and enclosure on all foursides for expansion clearance. Observethese clearances at all locations along thelength of the duct. If reinforcements areused for the particular duct, the spacingmust be maintained between thereinforcement and the Super Firetempboard.

D. Provide adequate clearance at the end ofall straight runs to allow for expansion ofthe metal duct inside the enclosure. Allow2" (51 mm) of expansion for every 100'(30.5 m) of straight run length.

E. Completely cover the duct with SuperFiretemp board. Use 2 " (50mm) SuperFiretemp T for 1-hour and 2-hour ratedassemblies. Butt joints should be staggereda minimum of 12 inches from other buttjoints (Figure 2). No more than 2 adjacentbutt joints should be placed in a commonplane surrounding a duct.

F. Cement all joints together with SuperCalstik by buttering both mating surfaceswith cement before joining. Use enoughSuper Calstik so that it squeezes out wherethe boards are mated together. Usageshould be about 50' (15.3 m) of joint (1/8"[3 mm] thick) per gallon (3.8 liters) ofSuper Calstik.

G. Fasten Super Firetemp sections togetherwith drywall screws or nails (8"[203 mm]O.C.) at joints where sections meet at rightangles. Screws or nails should be at least5" long (Screws or nails for ducts at orbelow cross-sectional dimensions of 24"(310 mm) by 24" (610 mm) 24" should beat least 3 1/2" long).

H. Provide adequate support at the bottom oflong vertical runs. On multiple-storyvertical runs, the Super Firetemp enclosureshall be supported at every floor level(Figure 5).

I. In multistory buildings product can beinstalled deck to deck or as a continuousenclosure. For deck to deck run the metalduct up through the penetrations in aconcrete floor system with metal supportsfor the metal duct resting on the floor ateach level. For continuous enclosuresthrough fire rated walls or floors followfirestop recommendations shown in Figures6A or 6B.

J. Whenever clean-out covers are required,use a rated access door or fabricate anaccess clean-out cover as shown in Figure7. Use a 1/8" (3 mm) thick gasket madefrom glass, mineral wool or ceramic fiberpaper around the outer 3" (76 mm) of theaccess opening to seal the door cover.Hold the fabricated access door in placewith two metal or wooden bars, usingwing nuts as shown in Figure 7.

K. Spackle all joints with Super Calstik.

L. Super Firetemp L and or M can becombined with Super Firetemp T usingSuper Calstik adhesive to form a fire ratedenclosure.

7. Calculations for the supporting members andconnection shall be submitted to the building official forapproval.
