Super Fall Edition
CCR members, The 2009 All-GM Show is now a fading memory as we head into fall. It was a great effort on both club's parts and it would be impossible to do it without the combined efforts of both sister clubs. I am proud to be associated with everyone in-volved and am glad that it was more fun than work in the end. We did feel the effects of the economy this year, as we had 48 less entries than our record breaking 2008 show of 177. We noticed that more than half of the cars & trucks coming in were pre-registered to save $5, which was something to-tally new. We streamlined much of the work at the front gate like just alphabetizing the pre-registered cars and split-ting the driveway in two. This made more cars move quicker and the complete laptop tabu-lating of the registrants before, during and after the show greatly improved efficiency. We were also able to make the
PayPal option work for online registration after months of tweaking the set-up. Much refiguring and redesigning of the new field was necessary due to the heavy construction across from the duck-pond, and many thanks go out to various members of both clubs who helped to make it work. Many thanks as well go to the Montgomery College Security & events folks for helping me at every turn going out of their way to make things work for us. I have been told that they love our show and look forward to it. Lot of kudos go to CCR members for taking in the pre-registrations and handling the ever impatient return calls and ferrying the money to the Buick club to keep track of it. Finally many thanks to our laptop vote counters and tabu-lators and for their help with antique gas pump assembly. It saved the day when the "Best of Show--Modified" winner

dropped his trophy, breaking his pump, and Denney Keys came to the rescue with a spare one from his truck. The food vendor and Mikey-the-Music Man were at their best. The GM-history trivia questions were a hit to make the door prize winners work for their prizes. We will try that again next year if we can get enough new questions. It was unanimous that the new show field was a favorite over the others and I will try to get it again for 2010. Also thanks go to Elsie Bell and the Browns for gra-ciously hosting the bag-stuffing party and last minute planning meetings that helped make the whole show work. Again, I am very proud to be part of the best group of car nuts that make all this crazy Herculean effort called a car show worth it in the end. It was fun! ------------ -Cory

time" with no engine in,
made it easier for me to
add my makeshift junc-
tion block, add the miss-
ing wire and correct to
how it is supposed to be
wired. It also gave me a
better view and access
for looking for the
proper ground straps,
and I added the negative
terminal to frame miss-
ing wire. With the old
steering column out,
replacing the speedome-
ter cluster lens was a
whole lot easier and get-
ting the thing back to-
gether correctly was not
something I was com-
pletely successful doing
with the column in. To-
day I found a couple of
"hot air holes" in the
firewall I'll stuff with
dum-dum. While the
mechanic was taking the
headers and trans loose,
I was underneath with a
can of POR-15 and dis-
posable brush, touching
up a few rust/bare spots.
I know the engine
is a BIG block, it just
doesn't look that big in
the engine bay. I suppose
once the rest of the stuff
is actually bolted on it'll
get a bit more crowded
between the fenders. I am
still wondering what 440
HP and 500 ft/lbs of
torque will feel like at
WOT. Since I will do the
"valve train conditioning"
I guess I'll find out soon
enough...
Since I never
knew what the old engine
had when it was running
well, I don't know what
to expect. I didn't get on
it that much before and
probably won't that much
in the future either. The
mechanic started it yester-
day and it already
sounded MUCH better
than the old engine!
Gary Sutherlin’s Engine Update
Page 2 The Rocket Review Volume 20, Issue 4
Editor‘s Note: CCR mem-
ber Gary Sutherlin shared with me
in an email this update on his new
ZZ454 GM crate engine for the
blue 1966 El Camino he brought to
the All-GM. As I know many of
us look at and consider engine re-
placements, I thought members
might find Gary’s update interesting.
Thanks Gary for the info!
My El
Camino engine update is
still on-going. The new
engine is sitting out on
the floor and the "GM
Performance Pan Kit",
made in Taiwan, pan has
been painted and is wait-
ing for the mechanic to
get some non-normal cus-
tomer need-it-now time.
This is something I agree
and support. They have
customers with daily driv-
ers, work trucks that
really need their vehicles
fixed sooner than later.
Besides I enjoy driving
my Olds as my daily
driver.
Actually the "idle

wife drove this maroon 1962
Cutlass convertible down
from PA to show off its new
interior and rebuilt engine.

he said something like
“I‟ve built a bunch of
these, and this is the
worst I‟ve seen by far!”
Regardless, he
was extraordinarily me-
ticulous in his disassem-
bly, rebuilding, and reas-
sembly of the turbo and
carb. The turbo is an
AirResearch model that
creates between 6-8 lbs.
of boost before a
wastegate opens. In or-
der to control detona-
tion as temperatures
from the exhaust driven
turbo can exceed 1400
degrees, a fluid injection
of 50/50 methyl alcohol
and distilled water (with
a touch of water pump
lubricant) pressurized by
manifold vacuum is in-
jected into the throttle
body between the single
barrel side draft Roches-
ter carb and the turbo.
As Jim worked
on that, I rebuilt the dis-
tributor using a Per-
tronix ignition system,
and cleaned and tested
the tank pressurization
valve—a rare item that
sits on the manifold and
controls fluid tank pres-
sure. It checked out.
Jim kept me in-
formed through pictures
of his progress on the
turbo, which took him
about 2 months to finish,
with the biggest delays
coming from his recondi-
tioning the scored bearing
race inside the turbo itself
and special ordering (they
were non-existent) a set
of ruptured diaphragms
for the waste gate.
As you can see
from the pictures, Jim‟s
work was cut out for him,
and he did a tremendous
job. The hardest part was
actually plumbing it once
I had it back, on the
manifold, and on top of
the engine. The great
thing Jim did was to label
each connection (52 in
all!) with its mate on little
key fobs. There are many
different sizes of vacuum,
fuel, and coolant tubing
used, as well as copper
and steel lines that needed
to be fabricated and bent
into place. What seemed
like a complete engine
took almost two weeks
just to connect all pieces
leak free and correctly.
Finally, it was done and
time to test it. More on
that, breaking it in, and an
unanticipated lifter
/pushrod problem next.
Jetfire Engine Rebuild, Part IV—Rise of the Turbo
Page 3 The Rocket Review Volume 20, Issue 4
Last issue con-
cluded with balancing the
crank and internal circu-
lating parts. Having cov-
ered the block, the valve
train, and the bottom end,
now came the tricky
parts—the turbo, carb,
and fluid injection system.
I had inquired
when I first got the en-
gine back in 2001 about
parts and rebuilding ser-
vices from the main 215
company in the US,
D&D Fabrications in
Michigan. Essentially,
they said it was
“unobtainium” - their
term for there were no
parts sources or rebuild-
ers. They were able to,
however, give me the
phone number of a gen-
tleman named Jim Noel,
who resides in Minnesota.
Fast forwarding to last
year when I began to re-
build the engine, I con-
tacted Jim, builder of 11
Jetfire engines and the
one that is on display at
the National Oldsmobile
Museum.
Jim took some
convincing, but in the fall
of 2008, he agreed to take
it on. After I shipped it
to him, he realized what
he was in for. I believe
Paul Seleckmann and his
wife drove this maroon 1962
Cutlass convertible down
from PA to show off its new
interior and rebuilt engine.
The turbo/carb setup as it ap-
peared when shipped out to Jim
Noel. Ugly and rusty.
Internal wastegate gasket was
hardest part to find. Jim tracked
down the original manufacturer.
Turbo assembly from the im-
peller side once it was recon-
ditioned.

Here‘s the inside of the compressor as it looked when
first taken apart. This and the one to the right demon-
strate Jim Noel‘s incredible work on this unit.
Single barrel sidedraft Rochester 1GC carb assembly
without the fluid injection system attached. Notice
dark grey wastegate left.
Finished turbo/carb/fluid
metering assembly on a
manifold. Looks a little bet-
ter than the top pictures, eh?
Various parts of the carb assembly, along with
fuel bowl and fluid meter parts, maybe in worse
shape than the turbo side.
These are two ancient and irreplaceable parts—on
top is a fluid tank decompression valve that Jim now
manufactures and on the bottom is the manifold
pressure valve that pressurizes the alcohol injection
tank and helps meter its injection.
