“We’ve had these solar panels for 10 years and they’re virtually

maintenance free. I feel so happywhen I use water heated by the sun. It’s win-win. Good for the wallet —

good for the environment.—Lynn

“I just wonder why I didn’t do thisyears ago. Maybe it’s the initial capital

investment, but that comes backmany-fold. It’s so fundamental —

energy from the sun. My advice is justjump in — the water’s warm.”

—Ian

“It certainly made sense financially forme. It’s not something like a furnacethat has to be serviced every year. As

far as ongoing maintenance there’svery little. It just sits there quietly

saving me money.”—Brett

The most efficient typeof solar energyUnlike photovoltaic (PV) systems thatconvert sunlight into electricity, a solar hotwater system simply captures the free andplentiful energy from the sun and uses it todirectly heat your water — a process that’sproven itself for over 100 years. Plus, aSunward™ Solar Hot Water System isabout 1/5th the price of a PV system thatcaptures the same amount of energy.

Your Best First Step toEnergy IndependenceMost energy experts agree that, aftertaking conservation measures (likeinsulating your home), solar hot watergives you the best return on yourinvestment.

Protection from RisingEnergy CostsWith all the uncertainty over future energycosts (the cost of oil doubled in 2009),perhaps the best reason to invest in solarhot water now is for the peace of mind.Think of it as "prebuying" up to 85% ofyour hot water for the next 20 or moreyears. How many oppor tunities exist tocap future energy costs in this way?

Hot Water: the secret“Gas Guzzler”Because it is usually hidden in one ormore utility bills, most homeowners areunaware of how much they spend ondomestic hot water for washing andbathing. According to the U.S.Department of Energy the averagehousehold spends up to 40% of theirhousehold energy bill on hot water!

As long as solarcollectors are placed inunshaded areas, solarhot water can be madeefficiently anywhere inthe USA.

A. CONTINUOUS EMBEDDED COPPERWhat it is: Copper tubing is sandwiched—under extreme

pressure—between two sheets of aluminum, permanentlybonding the metals together for an exclusive, super-conducting, leak-free system.

Why it’s better: In other collectors, where copper tubing is merely tack-welded to aluminum panels, heatabsorption is not as complete, and spot welds are prone to breakage due to expansion andcontraction. Plus, the single 64' length of copper tubing has no joints to leak or fail.

B. 20-WATT PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELWhat it is: This panel generates electricity from the sun’s

rays, to power the pump on the Heat Exchanger (whichmoves the heat transfer fluid through the system).

Why it’s better: Because the Sunward™ System generatesits own electricity, there’s no 110-volt wiring required. OurPV panel is pre-wired and all electrical components are“Quick-Connect.” Other solar hot water systems that arehard-wired into your home’s electricity are called parasiticsystems: they shut down during power failures, andconsume up to 15% of the system’s energy savings inelectricity.

Sunward™ Solar Collectors

Solar Collectors may be mounted on theground (shown in top photo on our optionaltimber frame kit) or on your roof. If youground-mount, the micro-tubing will needto be buried in a shallow trench. For roof-mounting, the micro-tubing can be routedon the exterior of the house or through aninternal path.

The Sunward™ System is easily incorpo-

rated into your house and property. The

main decisions you need to make are 1)

where to install the collectors, and 2) how

to route the connective micro-tubing from

the collectors to the heat exchanger. B

C. MICRO-TUBINGWhat it is: 3/8"-diameter copper tubing transfers the heated Glycol mixture

from the Solar Collectors to the Heat Exchanger.

Why it’s better: With our smaller-diameter tubing, capillary action forces outair, eliminating the need for priming the system, which simplifies installation.Other systems use 1/2" and 3/4"-diameter copper, which requires extralabor and expense to cut and solder joints at every turn. Sunward Micro-Tubing is flexible, so it can be shaped and snaked from the collectors to theheat exchanger. Our tubing is also a fraction of the cost of 3/4" insulatedlines for other systems, yet transports as much or more heat energy.

HEAT TRANSFER FLUIDSunward uses a mixture of food-grade Glycol and distilledwater (totally non-toxic) as its heat transfer fluid. But thanksto its smart design, the Sunward™ System uses less of it,and makes it last longer. In fact, a Sunward™ System can goup to 5 years without Glycol replacement. Many other sys-tems require annual replacement of the Glycol. That requiresflushing the system and the Glycol can cost as much as $80per gallon.

A. 80-GALLON GLASS-LINEDSTORAGE TANK

What it is: This tank provides extra storage capacity foryour solar-heated water, reducing by up to 85% theamount of oil, gas, or electricity your existing waterheater uses.

Why it’s better: The tank is separate from the HeatExchanger. Other systems use tanks with built-in heatexchangers. This means that when the tank wears outyou have to replace the whole unit, including the heatexchanger — which is the most expensive part of thesystem. Plus, our storage tank is included with theSunward System. (Many systems are sold withouttanks and this can come as an unpleasant, last-minute surprise!)

A. EXTERNAL HEAT EXCHANGERWhat it is: The Heat Exchanger transfers heat from the solar heated

Glycol to your water supply.

Why it’s better: External Heat Exchangers don’t need to be replacedwhen the tank does (see next page). Built-in units sit at the bottomof the tank—so when the water is heated, it naturally rises andmixes with colder water. The Sunward™ Heat Exchanger delivershot water right to the top of the storage tank (with minimal heatloss) where it is drawn from, on demand.

B. 20-WATT MAGNETIC-DRIVE PUMP What it is: The pump that circulates the Glycol mixture through the

Sunward system.

Why it’s better: Since it gets its power from the sun via the photo -voltaic panel mounted on your collectors, the pump only runs whenthere is enough sun to produce hot water. As the intensity of thesun increases, the pump picks up speed, and transfers heat to yourwater supply that much faster.

C. OVER 120' OF 1/4" COPPER TUBINGWhat it is: The tubing through which the heated Glycol is pumped in

order to transfer the heat to your cold water.

Why it’s better: Four concentric coils of copper tubing are nestedwithin one another inside the Heat Exchanger. There is so muchsurface area of copper in such a small space that the watersurrounding the tubing is quickly heated to as much as 180º F.

C. STAINLESS STEEL FLEX-PIPE andCOUPLINGS

What they are: These high quality couplings connect your StorageTank and Heat Exchanger quickly and easily with just a wrench.

Why they’re better: They eliminate the need for fussy (andexpensive) fixed plumbing and soldering in the connectionsbetween the Heat Exchanger and Storage Tank.

B. PRE-PLUMBED CONTROLS What it is: This array includes a thermal mixing valve,

temperature gauges, and nearly all the plumbingrequired to tap into your existing hot water system.

Why it’s better: Because it’s made in our factory, it isprecise and fully pressure-tested so it eliminatesconsiderable labor at the job site. Your plumber onlyneeds to make two cuts into your cold water inlet toconnect the Sunward™ System.

STORAGE TANKSUPPLEMENTS your existing hot water supply

Sunward™ HeatExchanger andStorage Tank The Sunward™ System does not replace

your current water heating system. In-

stead, the Sunward™ Solar Storage Tank

and Heat Exchanger work with any type

of existing hot water system, including

storage tanks, on-demand tankless

water heaters, or even a "loop" from a

boiler or furnace. So you’ll enjoy free hot

water when the sun is shining...but you’ll

still have hot water from your current

system when it’s not.

Inside the Sunward™ Heat Exchanger is theonly moving part in the entire system — the20-watt magnetic-drive pump that circulatesthe Glycol mixture. The pump is so reliable, itcarries a 10-Year Limited Warranty!

Frequently Asked Questions

Sunward™ Systems will not freeze and will easilyproduce free, piping hot water even when theoutside temperature is -40° F!

Service and Support

Q: Can solar hot water be used in any part of the country?

A: Yes. Homeowners in any state in the continentalU.S. can reduce their energy bills significantly by usinga Sunward™ Solar Hot Water System. The primarycriterion is that you can position the solar collectors ina location that receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlighteach day, without obstruction from shadows. Evenovercast days (as long as there is enough light to cast ashadow, no matter how faint) will produce plenty ofsolar-heated water.

Q: Does my house need to face due south?

A: No, the solar collectors do not need to face duesouth. You can efficiently trap solar heat with collectorsthat face as much as 45 degrees east or west of duesouth. Even if your roof is not ideally oriented, Sunwardcollectors can be mounted on the ground to gain abetter exposure to the sun.

Q: Is installation difficult?

A: Many solar hot water systems are notoriouslycomplex and expensive — primarily because no twoinstallations are identical. This is why Sunward™

Systems have been designed so our components"quick connect," completely eliminating the need forAC wiring, complicated plumbing, and solderingcopper pipe. This eliminates a huge amount ofinstallation expense. In fact, Sunward offers the onlysystem that is so easy to install you can do most of thework yourself if you are handy.

Q: Does the Sunward™ System replace mycurrent hot water system?

A: No. The Sunward™ System does not replace yourexisting hot water system, but rather acts as a “pre-heater.” Once installed, the cold water coming fromyour well or municipality that now feeds into yourexisting water heating system will be diverted to firstenter your Sunward Storage Tank. This water will thenbe heated by the sun, either fully or partially dependingon how much sun you receive. It will be stored in theSunward Storage Tank until you use hot water, at whichtime it will reenter your existing hot water system. Thisallows the Sunward™ System to work with ANY existinghot water system, including electric or gas-fueled hotwater tanks, “on-demand” tankless water heaters, ordomestic hot water “loops” from your oil, gas, or woodfueled furnace.

Q: What if there are extended cloudyperiods?

A. During long periods of overcast days, or whendays are shorter in winter months, you won’t make asmuch solar hot water. Your existing system will thenheat the water, just like it does today, so you’ll neverrun out of hot water. The best news is that even ifthere’s only enough sun to pre-heat your water a fewdegrees, that’s still less fuel you’ll use. You can expecta Sunward™ Solar Hot Water System to provide 65%-85% of your annual hot water, depending on how muchsunlight you receive.

Solar collectorscan be mounted onthe ground or onyour home’s roof.

We’re just a phone call away If you ever have any questions about your Sunward™ Solar Hot Water System, ourexperienced team of Technical Support Specialists will provide free, one-on-oneassistance. Each of our Specialists has received extensive training in product useand troubleshooting. If necessary, we can get parts to you right away. And if we can’t solve your problemover the phone, we’ll find someone in your area who can. So go ahead and enjoy your new Sunward™ Solar Hot Water System...and knowthat we’ll always be here.

Q: Will the Sunward™ System work well inthe winter?

A: Days are shorter in winter, especially in northern lat-itudes. However, thousands of homes as far north asNewfoundland have been using our system to makesolar hot water in the winter. In general, in summermonths you'll make 90-100% of your hot water from thesun, in the spring and fall 70-90%, and about 35-50% inthe winter when days are shorter.

Sunward™ Systems can even be used in areas withheavy snowfall. When mounted properly, snow will gen-erally slide right off the tempered glass surface of thecollectors. You may see frost forming on the photo-voltaic panel which generates electricity to run thepump. However, as soon as the sun hits this panel, ittakes just a short time for it to heat up enough to meltthe frost.
