2 lbs sea trout fillets (or any white fish), cut into 1 inch thick fillets
1 stick butter, melted
1/2 cup blackening seasoning
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup light mayo
1 tablespoon garlic salt
1/2 cup roughly chopped cilantro
Coat cast iron skillet with olive oil. Preheat cast iron skillet to roughly 350 degrees in the oven. And once heated, move to grill that has already been heated to 400 degrees.
Toss fish with melted butter. Using 1/4 cup seasonings cover one side of fish. Place seasoning side down in cast iron skillet. Allow to cook for 2 minutes. During this time coat the side of fish facing up with the other 1/4 cup seasonings. Flip fish and allow to cook another 2 minutes, or until cooked thoroughly.
Then fill tortillas with fish, cabbage, a drizzle of the Fish Taco Sauce and enjoy!
Fish Taco Sauce: Using your food processor or blender, purée all ingredients together. Refrigerate until ready to use.
FRESH FISH TACOS
FISH TACO SAUCE
STEAK TACOS 3 pounds bone-in chuck roast, trimmed of fat
5 cloves, minced garlic
8 ounces beer
Salsa
Spicy Crema Mexicana (1 cup sour cream mixed with two tablespoons taco seasoning)
Place the roast in a slow cooker, and then add the garlic, onions, lime juice, olive oil, spices, and salt and pepper. Massage all the ingredients into the meat and let sit for 15 minutes. Top with the chili, cilantro and beer, and then cover. Set the slow cooker to high and cook for 4 hours on high or 6 hours on low.
Once the meat is tender and falling apart, remove and shred, discarding any bones and extra fat. Cover meat to keep warm and set it aside. Skim off as much fat as you can from the liquid in the slow cooker and drizzle some of the remaining juices over the meat to keep it moist and flavorful.
Using tongs, toast the tortillas very lightly over a low burner. Tortillas will toast quickly, in 10-15 seconds. Fill tortillas and enjoy!

Taproot Farms, Co. is a family owned and operated business specializing in handcrafted natural skin care products. From shea butter to their popular goat milk soap, all of thier products are created on the family's off- grid farmstead in Chickaloon, Alaska. We were thrilled to hear the story straight from the farmers.
"Our story began in the late 1990's as a father/son homeschool project. Arctic Breeze, as we were called at the time, emerged from that project and we started selling our products to family and friends. To our surprise, it was actually pretty successful for being a kitchen operation. Desiring a more simple lifestyle, in 2005 we moved our family business to a 197 acre farmstead in Chickaloon. Taproot Farms, Co. was born from and inpired by that drastic change in our lifestyle."
WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME? We first chose the name Taproot becasue it just sounded cool. But as we have grown as individuals and as a company, we have realized that our name couldn't be more perfect for us. We desire to be a taproot in people's lives, inspiring them to live more simply, sustainably, and fully as a community.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR WORK? One thing that we are very passionate about is finding contentment in everything we do. It's easy to be happy doing the things you like, such as interacting with customers at the market. It is a lot more challenging finding that same joy while mucking out
the goat pen on a blazing hot day. Life is full of adversity. We have found so much peace and happiness learning to embrace the challenges and joys with the same attitude.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE? The greatest joy is also the hardest challenge. We often struggle to be content through all processes and seasons of life and work. But hey, we're only human.
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS? Argan oil, shea butter, and goat milk soap. Argan oil is an incredible multi- purpose oil, excellent for all skin types. It makes the most amazing moisturizer! Shea is great for those who suffer from dry skin, especially for us Alaskans. Our goat milk soap is made with our own goat's milk, from our farm. It is truly astounding how much of a difference goat milk makes in soap. It is a skin super food! We also have some really exciting new products and lines in the works. They are top secret, of course, so you will have to stay tuned!
DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY AT TAPROOT FARMS. Oh gosh, no two days are alike around here. Since we live off-grid, we are often directed by the weather. If it snows a lot, the day is usually spent doing snow removal and plowing our two mile, unmaintained road. If it is super sunny or windy, it's laundry and vacuuming day. The only "constants"

35
36 SUNSHINE Issue No. 5
are making and shipping products, milking the goats, and taking care of our livestock.
WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED? We are constantly inspired by our customers, or our "tribe" as we like to call them. Seeing their desire to live more simply, wholly, and naturally fuels us and inspires us to help meet their needs.
ANY EXCITING STORIES FROM THE FARM? There are so many crazy stories in our past; so many fly by the seat of our pants moments. Most of the time, they involved our goats. When we first decided to get goats, it was on a total whim. The day we picked them up, we didn't have any hay and their pen wasn't even finished yet. WE will never forget the hilarious display it was trying to contain them while we frantically worked on their pen, in the freezing winder wind. Goat's are master escape artists and can get spooked very easily. They were running EVERTYWHERE, and all we remember is thinking that they were going to run off in the woods and get eaten by bears. You would think we would have learned our lesson then, but no. We had to repeat the same situation when we first got pigs. Except in that scenario, we were sprinting through the woods trying to find teeny tiny little pigs.

Bob and Cortney Novogratz caught our attention a few years ago when thier Bravo TV show, Nine By Design, made it's debut. Then we followed them over to HGTV and glued ourselves to their design show. This married couple is known for their distinctive, urban-bohemian design style. They have a gift for mixing new and vintage with high end and thrifted. Life in New York City with seven children has developed the Novogratz style into something functional with a touch of quirk. They transform homes and buildings into whimsical living spaces. Bob and Cortney tell us, "We wear many hats, from building, designing products, hotel design, and
"We purchased a dilapidated brownstone in Chelsea (a neighborhood on the West side of Manhattan) 16 years ago and everything after that is history."
"Youth, big cities, fashion, film, travel, humor, and most especially, color."

Our designs have become more modern with cleaner lines. But since our style is always changing, that might reverse in the future. It’s very fluid.

FAIRY BIRDS A PAIR OF TWIN SISTERS WORK TOGETHER TO TEACH
CHILDREN THE POSITIVE RESULTS OF KINDNESS AND GIVING
Heather and Heidi started working together when they created an accessory line called True Birds. They were at a special appearance for Nordstrom when the store manager asked the twin sisters when they were going to start a clothing line. "This got us thinking where we wanted to take our company next. So we thought and thought some more and something crazy happened, out of the blue we both had the same idea of writing a children's book and also the exact same storyline in our heads. Never had it occurred to us that we should write a book but sure enough the stars alined and we moved forward and have loved it ever since."
The book is called Fairy Birds. It is a positive experience in children's literature where children can learn great characteristics like giving, loving, and kindness in a fun and adventurous way. We asked Heather and Heidi a few questions about their colorful work and artistic lives.
HEATHER: We love creating together and love how our work causes us to speak on the phone at least a few times a day! Sisters talk all the time anyway but working with your sister causes you to literally always be in touch, that is the best bonus of working together!
HEIDI: Working with my best friend, could there be anything better? It is such a great way to connect with one another. Sometimes we can be a bit goofy and other times we get creative. I love that we both bring something unique to the table.
HEATHER: Creating! We love to create together whether that is writing or coming up with the next outfit for one of our book characters. We love gathering inspiration and we love turning our pages of Fairy Birds into real life through our community parties we throw. They are a lot of work but they are so fun and rewarding in that we get to connect with local communities and meet kids where we can teach them about the giving movement of the book in person.
HEIDI: Letting our creative juices fly. It is so fun and rewarding to write books that get our minds reeling and thinking of ways we can get kids inspired to do good in this world. I love the interaction the book creates between us and our readers. To see their faces light up and talk about how they can give in their lives makes everything worth it.
HEATHER: Each other! I feel like we push each other to be more creative, think outside the box, and grow. I also feel that traveling and being outdoors keeps us plugged into being different and keeping a fresh approach on things as we gather inspiration from that.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAIRY BIRDS EXPERIENCE? HEIDI: To date the most memorable experience we has been the amazing opportunity to meet with a group in Dallas, Texas to kick-off their preventative at-risk youth program. It was such a special experience to read the book to these children. They were so responsive and we had a great discussion on how to they could give in their own homes. The answers they gave were very heartfelt and sweet. They were so excited about the book and gave us such a warm response. Despite their difficulties they had in their own homes, they were optimistic and full of happiness. We walked out of this experience with positive vibes and endless smiles. A book reading we will never forget.
More Fairy Birds Giving Movement parties around the USA and book #2 coming out hopefully Fall/Winter 2014!

HEIDI: Distance. Heather lived in Verona, Italy and I lived in San Diego, CA when we wrote and published the book. The time zone difference sometimes made it difficult to connect but we were flexible and found times that worked with each others' schedule. Due to the modern day convenience of Skype and Facetime we were really able to connect and felt at times that we were sitting right next to each other which made the writing and editing process so much fun! Now Heather lives in Dallas, TX and I still currently live in San Diego still working alongside each other on Facetime and loving it.
HEATHER: I'd say modern hippie. I find myself wearing a mix of lights, brights, lace and natural fabrics. I like things that flow. I also love layered jewelry and beach waves in my hair. HEIDI: I love the hippie style as well, but also love to mix it up with fresh current prints. I love to accessorize with bright pops of color and create soft, natural curls with my hair.
HEATHER: I love a bright lipstick and a bit of bronzer. I feel like a bright lip can pop your features and a bronzer gives me a little sunshine in my every day.
HEIDI: My staples are mascara and a small amount of eyeliner. A pop of coral on those lovely cheekbones makes you feel vibrant, and a rotating lip color keeps things interesting.

If you are going to rock a camo look, be sure the pieces fit your body in a flattering way. Your act of fashion bravery can go terribly wrong with ill-fitting pieces.
If you don't want to draw attention to your bottom half, only wear camo on the top.
Camo comes in many different patterns. Avoid tree or desert patterns. If you're going for a fashionable look, stick with a classic, traditional green camo.
one at a time Camo is a strong pattern. You only need one article of camo paired with simple solids to make a bold statement.
