WE SUPPORT MOVEMBER

Who are they?

Extract from the Mayor’s message to matricu-lantsMatric is undoubtedly an important milestone which serves as the harbinger of all their future education-al pursuits. The days leading up to the exams are of-ten tense with extreme levels of stress and anxiety. Matric exams are probably the most crucial and vi-tal examinations that you will ever write since they eventually determined your life long career options.

Desire is the key to motivation, but its determina-tion and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal, a commitment to excellence that will en-able you to attain the success you seek. Therefore re-gard the examinations as an opportunity to test your commitment and drive. An ounce of performance is

worth pounds of promises. It is now time for action, determination and execution. No problem in life can withstand the assault of continued learning and sus-tained prayer.

It becomes vitally important that parents and sib-lings also need to play their role by ensuring that the home environment is conducive to study. The success of your examinations is dependent on effec-tive time management, smart studying techniques, a balanced diet and regular exercise. As you approach the examinations phase, it is worth reflecting on the nature of life itself. Life is but a voyage (expedition) of tests and tribulations which we need to face with courage and determination. I want to say to you all that we are continually faced with making tough

decisions and choices. It is not difficult to make the right choice if you know what your values are! Stay committed to your values but remain flexible in your approach.

Lastly, there is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with examination. The whole life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.

We are living in a time where expectations are unrealistic, comparisons are unavoidable and label-ling has become the norm.

Students are vulnerable to a high volume of criti-cism at this stage as they are defined by the number of distinctions achieved and the brand of university they are admitted to.

Societal prescription demands high achievers, setting the bar at an unreasonable level, which only a percentage of students can attain.

Students are cautioned not to panic or buckle under such harsh scrutiny as we are unique beings designed to identify our vocation and chase our dreams which ultimately defines us.

Parents should monitor their kids closely during this period by supporting, motivating and encour-aging them. Affirming your kids and reassuring them that, whatever the outcome of the exams they are no less loved, respected and valued.

Take initiative in their lives and listen when they speak. Preparing our students for certain eventual-ity - after results are released - can help reduce low morale and avert negative consequences.

Students are strongly advised to have a plan B and C during course selection. Should plan A not work, there is always a contingency plan to bounce off. This allows students more flexibility and choice without feeling stifled, hopeless and backed-up against the wall.

It is of paramount importance to remember that we are not all university material.

Some of us are skills based, whilst others are sports-oriented, there are those who are drawn to the arts and entertainment or the hospitality indus-try. MAY GOD BLESS THE MATRIC CLASS OF 2013

Your Attitudes Determine Your AltitudeIn his recent speech in support of the 2013 Matriculants across Ndlambe Municipality, Mayor Sipho Robert Tandani stressed two themes that your attitude determines you altitude and to take heart in the knowledge that your community stands by you.

FaIRvIew Farm 395/5 is situated along the eastern Cape coast between east London and Port elizabeth. The nearest towns are Kenton-on-Sea and Port alfred.

The new owners of the farm chose to design a residence using renewable energy and consequently a complete hybrid system comprising of solar panels, wind turbines, battery storage and the necessary monitoring and control equipment has been installed.

The installation is also grid-connected, so that the household can exchange electricity with the eskom grid.

If there is no wind, no sun, eskom is down and the back-up batteries are de-pleted then power can be drawn from the diesel genera-tor.

H

OW DOES IT WORK

The electricity produced from the solar panels and wind turbines is converted into a 220v/50Hz sinewave by the grid manager computer/inverter so that it can be used as the regular supply. The excess energy that is not consumed by the household can be “fed” into the eskom grid.

The batteries are only used for backup purposes.

Fairview Farm 395/5 was formerly a game farm compris-ing pristine eastern Cape bush with no facilities whatso-ever i.e. no roads, water, sewerage or electricity.

Glynnis and Cyril Gebhardt

Having worked in the Petrochemical industry in Gauteng for many years Cyril and Glynnis had the opportunity in 2010 to sell their es-tablished company to a JSe group.

They purchased Fairview Farm 395/5 and relocated to the Kasouga area.

Who are they?

Eros and Rua. The two faithful city hounds have become regular farm dogs and are thriving in their new environment.

Eveready Wind turbine 80 volt DC with Grundfos borehole pump controller. The turbine supplies DC power directly to the Grundfos borehole pump and the gate motor at the entrance.

The DC power from this turbine is limited to 500 volts and then inverted to 220v /50 Hz sinewave before being trans-mitted via an underground cable to the main power man-ager computer situated at the farm house.

The DC photovoltaic power is inverted to 220v/50hz sin-ewave and then transmitted to the main power manager computer.

This central computer receives power from all the sources i.e. solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, eskom grid and the diesel generator. The power is then distributed directly to the house and the back-up batteries are kept fully charged. This complex system also permits excess power from the wind turbine and solar panels to be exchanged with the eskom grid.

as the wind does not always blow and the sun does not always shine in the eastern Cape it is useful to have backup power from the eskom grid.

I Go Travel volunteers arranged the Kenton RocKs Disco on Saturday the 2nd of November in the town hall. The su-pervised event for young teens was a roaring success as can be seen. The volunteer hope to host more such fun and safe

events for young teens during the holiday season as part of the Kenton Beach Club activities.

I Go Student Travel, based in Kenton-on-Sea, offer a unique experience for Interna-tional students aiemd at adding value to their curriculum by adding a challenging experience - designed by their educational facility - which incorporates the education-al needs of the student and those of the lo-cal community in the Kenton-on-Sea area. Students need to learn how to adapt and how to work with people and as a team in accomplished goals and learning and teach-ing one another.

Sjef Smits, 26, a student in Urban and Ru-ral development at the HAS-University in ‘s-Hertogenbosch shares his experience.

It is obligatory to do an internship abroad and I chose to do mine in South Africa. One of the most important reasons was the di-versity of the country, in culture, as well as in nature.

My assignment while with I Go Student Travel was to write a report about the Mar-selle township on water management. The area is very poor and they have lots of prob-lems with water management. My task was to identify the problems and find (the most) applicable solutions for these problems.

One of the biggest challenges is the amount of materials you can use to work with compared to the Netherlands. Lots of information was not available, so I went out a lot to gather the information myself. A very positive thing was that all the people were very interested in the work that I did and they all want to help out with whatever I needed. This is something you would not see in the Netherlands.

In short I can recommend to each student of Urban and Rural development, landscape design, or any study in the field of water management, infrastructural development etc. to spend their internship here. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will stick with me for the rest of my life!

VAL Armstrong will be our only PA Croqueteer playing in the South African Na-tional Golf Coquet Cham-pionships taking place in Somerset West. She and her partner from Cape Town were the runners-up in the Open Doubles last year, however this year, she will be playing with a dif-ferent partner from Natal.

Our other two National Title holders, Mary McGhie & Jill Pople who won the Handicap Doubles, will not be defending their title. We wish Val good croquet, good luck & a happy tour-nament.

Both our ‘wounded war-riors’, Elaine Reed & Jenni-fer Worrall, are well settled in the Frail Care units of

Damant Lodge & Settlers’ Park and are happy to see old friends. Please remem-ber, though, that they both tire easily, so don’t visit for too long!

Our Social member and bar lady, Mary Boyd, is celebrating her birthday on the 9th of November. We wish you good health, lots of painting and many

happy times in the coming year. Please don’t forget Birthday night on Tuesday the 12th of November, and if attending, please bring a plate of eats!

The Prize giving is on Tuesday, 19 November, and there are still some outstanding matches to be played! Please arrange to play these asap!

Kleinemonde Mashie course historyDUE to vagrants near the Kleinmonde tips, Piet Coetzer decided to clear bush to deter vagrants and others that fre-quented the bushy area. “It made such a differ-ence that we decided to use this piece of ground and make it into a park like area,” Piet said.

“We decided in No-vember 2011 to build a three hole mashie golf course for a bit of fun, this was enjoyed by all and we currently have

six greens and nine tee boxes,” he added.

The Kleinemonde Mashie course hosts regular competitions on Fridays at 16:00 with an average of 12 to 16 play-ers turning out and visi-tors are welcome. Results: Friday the 1/11/2013Individual Medal: 1st Andre Laas 28 net2nd Wayne Bowls 29 netNearest to pin on 3rd Daniel Wind

Jarryd PaULS

The recent news of a trag-ic event that shook South African cricket served to re-mind us of the dangers that playing the sports we love

may pose. Darryn Randall, a former Border cricket-

er and highly regarded coach at Stirling Pri-

mary School, died tragically at the age of 32 when he was struck on the side of the head after attempting a pull shot. He was play-ing in a match in Alice for Old Selbornians against Fort Hare University. According to reports he was wearing a helmet.

Deaths while playing are not new to cricket. Raman Lamba, a former Indian Test cricketer, died after he was struck on the head whilst fielding at short leg without a helmet in 1998. Sadly, such events in the past have seemingly not changed certain people’s minds on the importance of wear-ing safety equipment.

In club cricket in this region it is too com-

mon an occurrence to see an opening bats-man stride out to the crease without wear-ing a helmet as a show of fearlessness to the bowlers. Such foolishness usually only goes so far as to aggravate and encourage the bowlers, inviting them to ‘pepper’ the batsman with a few short deliveries.

Of course there are certain safety mea-sures in some sports which will always re-main optional, such as a scrum cap in rugby. However, too often junior and senior rugby players run out to play without mouth guards, which can protect one from severe teeth and gum injuries.

In South Africa we need to monitor safety

more closely. Wearing a safety-approved helmet when batting or fielding at close-in positions such as short leg should no lon-ger be optional. Surely it is time to create stricter rules in the area of safety equip-ment and ensure that they are applied. Sadly, as evidenced over the weekend, there are times when even helmets fail to prevent the unthinkable, but they do go a long way towards enhancing the safety of cricketers. Hopefully we will begin to see improve-ments in local sport in the near future.

In the meanwhile, the sporting world mourns the sad passing of one of its con-tributors and participants.

THIS is so much more than a story, it’s what legends are made of! #washietake2 is about ordinary people doing the EXTRAordinary.

The Washie 100 Miler is not

an ordinary race, it’s one of the most gruelling road races on the continent, 160 kilometres that challenges even the best ultra-distance runner under the harshest conditions.

Motoring Matters ian CookThis column is sponsored by The Little Brewery.

Please drink and drive responsibly.

There are no fewer than 9 finalists in the 2014 Car Of The Year competition, which is sponsored by Wesbank, and run by the S A Guild of Motoring Journalists, and I have listed them in alphabetical order in order to avoid any show of bias:Audi A3 Sportsback 1.4T FSI ManualJaguar F-Type 3.0 V6 S

These vehicles will all be put through their paces at a two-day evaluation in Gauteng in January of 2014, which in-cludes some rigorous test=driving by jury members of the Guild.

The overall winner will be revealed at a banquet in February - watch this space for that announcement!

Joey Venter has com-pleted the Washie twice, and this year the Washie beat her – or did it?

Joey, backed by a com-mitted team of seconds and a passionate ‘be-hind the scenes’ team, is set to re-run the Washie 100 route. But, this time it’s about more than just completing the distance. This is about more than beating the road – each step, each kilometre run, is to assist vulnerable women and their children – survivors of domestic violence, rape or abuse -survivors of one of life’s most gruelling challenges under harsh conditions.

Joey and her team are busy writing history – would YOU like to be a

part of it? This is your opportunity to be part of something EXTRAordi-nary. You don’t have to run, walk or even crawl any of the 100 miles of the Washie route.

Your part is simple, but critical! Pledge your sup-port for Joey, her team and most importantly the vulnerable women and their children by spon-soring Joey per kilometre or making a once-off or monthly donation today.
