Hoekom? Want as kleintjie was dit sy ‘ding’, mama se lang hare!

Daardie ervaring los jou nooit agter nie, nie as pasiënt of as ouer nie.

So doen my ‘n guns, gaan besoek die FB bladsy vir Little Fighters Cancer Trust en

Rosehill Superspar invited Chipembere Rhino Foundation to par-ticipate in their community box project towards the end of Oc-tober 2013. For the project Spar customers are encouraged to donate their till receipts to one of the selected charities/service clubs/organisations from the area represented in their store and Rosehill Superspar then pledge to donate one per cent of all till receipts collected in the charity boxes.

Jackie elms, senior admin for the Superspar, invited a represen-tative from the foundation to come in and sit in on the grueling count of all the receipts donated to Chipembere’s community box where a massive R375, 000.00 worth were counted in.

Brent Cook from Chipembere was advised and after contact-ing several active reserves in the surrounding area, the decision was made to use the spar voucher worth R3, 750.00 on rations for Anti-Poaching teams who go on extended bush patrols. Bully Beef, Condense Milk, Hot Chocolate and Game was the collective request. These rations were collected by Brent and have already been distributed to Anti-Poaching Teams on the ground!

Heartfelt thanks once again from the Foundation to Douw Pot-gieter and the team from Rosehill Superspar and this incredible community for the unwavering support to help save our rhino!

LeNT is derived from the Anglo Saxon word lenctem, meaning spring. Lent is the 40 days (excluding Sun-days) between Ash Wednesday and easter Sunday. Tra-ditionally it has been a time of fasting commemorative of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the wilderness following his baptism. Lent also recalls the 40 days that elijah and Moses both spent with God, as well as the 40 years that Israel spent wandering in the desert. Lent prepares the way for the greatest observance of the year, the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Lent is a good time self-reflection, a time to re-exam-ine our lives and get realigned in our relationship with God and the world around us. This year I would like to suggest that the path we travel is that of simplicity.

Simplicity, contrary to the suggestion of its name,

is not a particularly simple or easy way. Life is very complex and the walk of simplicity is complicated and demanding, but the rewards are many. Simplicity is a spiritual discipline that re-orients our lives by deliber-ately organizing it for a purpose. It is spiritual because simplicity deals intimately with the beliefs and views that lend shape and order to our lives. Simplicity is a discipline because we have to work at it and practice it in order to apply it in our lives. each of our paths will be unique to our situation.

Simplicity touches every area of our lives as we open more of ourselves to God and the central value that di-rects our lives. May these 40 days of Lent be a time of refreshing and renewal as we practice these daily disci-plines. (With acknowledgement to Ann Hagmann)

IT has been some time since I attended a Club 100 luncheon - as I moved away from the area for a few years – so it was with slight trepidation that I set off last Friday afternoon listen to “The big game hunter who’s gunning for the poachers”.

Nope, big game hunting, mmm… definitely not my topic of choice. Controversy around Ron Thomson arose even be-fore the scheduled luncheon and the debate in the room was already stirring - following a letter published in the Talk of the Town newspaper – as I en-tered the room.

I observed with fascination as some folks nodded while the guest, Ron Thomson, spoke, while others muttered “that’s oversimplifying things ...” I took notes found elements I agreed with and many I did not. A brief opportunity for questions fol-lowed after the talk before lunch was served and all were reminded to approach the speaker for further questions or debate and to peruse his books on sale.

At our table two women de-bated the talk and suddenly I heard loudly and clearly “well, if I had to put up with a big game hunter, then ernest Heming-way would have been the man for me…” She had my attention and we interacted. I was seated next to someone who was fairly new to the area and it was clear that for her Club 100 offered an opportunity to meet new people in a stimulating envi-ronment.

And then it was time to go and I realised I ‘d seen many fa-miliar faces and met many new, socialised and relaxed without

needing to make meaningless small talk. I reflected on the many other Club 100 func-tions I’ve attended and realised that’s always the case. Club 100 offers women in the area – and more regularly nowadays men – the opportunity to meet ‘n greet, listen to a good speaker, and enjoy a hearty luncheon. The speaker or the topic may not always meet your approval or be in line with your view-point but it always makes for excellent conversation around the table.

See you there next time?

Club 100: a hot ‘n steamy review

Ron Thompson, guest speaker at last week’s Club 100 luncheon: “The people whose livelihoods are dependent on the sustain-able use of any living resource are those who are the most concerned about its proper management.”

March is Energy Month in South Africa.

Come on board and reduce energy consumption in your everyday life. over this period, government or-ganisations will partner with businesses, organisations and concerned citizens to promote energy saving and spread awareness of South Africa's energy needs.

In December 2010, the UN General Assembly de-clared 2012 the International Year of Sustainable en-ergy Access for All. Government has thus emphasised the importance of increasing access to energy, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Five quick tips to reduce energy consumption in your home:

1. If you’re not using an appliance, switch it off and minimize Phantom Loads (energy that an appli-ance or electronic device consumes when it is not actually turned on) by unplugging appli-ances and electronics when you are not using them, or by plugging them into a power strip,

and turning the strip off when they are not in use. Research shows that phantom loads can account for up to 6% of your household energy usage.

2. Switch to Solar – make the most of living on the Sunshine Coast and harvest the energy of the sun with a solar geyser and claim your eskom rebate.

3. A geyser uses 39% of all household electricity; switch it off to save electricity and money. Insu-late geysers and water pipes as this will help the water to stay hot for longer. Reduce the maximum temperature setting for your geyser/ thermostat, to 60ºC and instead of a long bath rather shower, as showers use less water and energy. energy and water-saving shower heads use less water and electricity.

4. Use energy saving globes (CFLs) instead of incan-descent bulbs.

5. To save money in your kitchen close fridge doors as quickly as possible when taking items out – do not leave the door open for longer than necessary.

TB Awareness MonthTUBeRCULOSIS (TB) causes thousands of deaths every year in South Africa and the rest of the world. To help stop the spread of the disease, the World Health Organ-isation (WHO) started a new plan called the Glob-al Plan to Stop TB 2011-2015: Transforming the Fight - Towards the Elimi-nation of Tuberculosis.

The number of people who die from TB rises worldwide every year. The new and improved plan is action oriented. It will run from 2011 to 2015 and its main aim is to save more than five million lives in the next five years. The plan will

improve TB research to help the development of rapid TB tests, faster treatment plans and more effective vaccines.

World TB Day, fall-ing on March 24th each year, is designed to build public awareness that tuberculosis today re-

mains an epidemic in much of the world, caus-ing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-half million people each year, mostly in developing countries. It commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch's announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. Koch's dis-covery opened the way towards diagnosing and curing TB.

Tuberculosis is often called TB for short. TB can infect any part of the body, but most often it attacks the lungs; it is then called pulmonary TB.Symptoms of pulmonary TB are:• a cough that lasts for more than 2-3 weeks• weight loss• fever• night sweats• loss of appetite• coughing up blood.

When people with TB cough, sneeze or spit, they propel the germs that cause TB into the air. A person can be in-fected by inhaling only a few of these germs.Infected people may not feel ill or show any symptoms if their immune system can keep the bacteria under con-trol. About one-third of the world's people are infected without showing symptoms. When someone's immune system is weakened, the chances of becoming sick are greater. TB can be cured with medication... but untreated it can kill.

My Dog Wont Stop Whining! What should I do?SPCA COLUMN SPONSORED By BUCO

ARe you a dog owner that is up-set because your canine com-panion whines all the time? Are you scared that your adorable pup may be ill, or that some-thing serious could be wrong? When your pup does whine, do you get mad at her for such ir-rational behavior?

If you answered yeS to any of the above questions, the first thing to know is that you are not alone. Dogs that whine incessantly is one of the most common complaints of dog owners the world over!

The second thing to know is that getting upset or getting mad at your friend (however justified you feel in doing this) is unlikely to have a positive im-pact on the situation.

There is a possibility that if your pup whines a lot it might be sick or injured. It may also mean that your dog is sad, de-pressed or scared. Just like hu-mans, dogs also have feelings. you may want to do some in-vestigation to find out the real reason for your dog's behavior.

Remember that dogs cannot talk. They can communicate their feelings only by barking or whining. That's the only com-munication methods they have available to them. When a dog whines, this means that your dog has a problem or needs

something. First and foremost have your dog examined thor-oughly by your vet to check if there is any medical problem. A dog can indicate pain only by whining.

If there is no medical problem then you would need to take a step further in order to inves-tigate why your dog whines so much. Another reason could be boredom. Dogs are very ac-tive and intelligent animals. A dog that is lazy might be a dog with a problem. Normally, a dog whines in order to indicate that it is getting bored and it needs some kind of stimulation. you must keep your dog busy for as long as a possible. Taking your dog to obedience training, or undertaking your own training with your dog, will help to keep its mind and body active and stem most issues.

even a simple "Stay" com-mand would be sufficient to keep your dogs mind out of boredom. This would make the dog feel that it is doing some-thing important for its master. This simple trick might be suffi-cient to keep dog from whining in your home.

A few more reasons that may trigger dog whines are fear, bossy attitude of your dog or having a dog with a demanding nature. In such situations you

must use efficient parenting skills to teach your dog good habits. Remember that a well trained dog should whine only when it is sick or in trouble. If your dog whines frequently then it will be difficult for you to know when they are truly in trouble, and this could lead to disaster.

Another common reason is that your dog is suffering from separation anxiety as dis-

cussed in a previous article. This is a very common, but often mis-understood, clinical disorder that leads to dogs whining, bark-ing and tearing your home apart when you are away. If you think this may be a problem for you, I would encourage you to seek

professional advice.Remember, you can always

exchange ideas with the friend-ly staff at your SPCA who also knows the professionals in our area. email us on [email protected] or call us at 046 624-1919.

Mexican Pepper Casserole

IngrEDIEnTS:

1 tbs olive oil

2 cups sliced onion

6-8 bell peppers thinly sliced

4-5 cloves of garlic minced

1 tsp salt

1 and a half tsp cumin

1 tsp dry mustard

Black pepper to taste

Cayenne to taste

2 tbs flour (chickpea flour packs an added protein punch)

2-3 eggs

2 cups yogurt

grated cheese

Paprika for the top

METHoD:

Sauté onions in olive oil until they begin to soften. Add bell peppers and spices of your choice for another 8-10 minutes then sprinkle in the flour and allow to cook for another five min-utes until the peppers are very tender. Transfer to oven proof bowl.

Beat together the eggs and yogurt and stir in fresh minced herbs of your choice – we used Vietnamese corian-der leaves. Pour the custard over the bell pepper and onion mix. Cover with grated cheese and dust with paprika.

Bake for 30-40 minutes until firm in centre and bubbly around the edges. Serve hot with rice and beans!

With Peppers in abundance my sous chef (almost 11) and I decided to tackle this easy yet yummy recipe to deal with our current green pepper glut. While I usually prefer red or yellow peppers fresh and crunchy in a salad life some-

times gives you lemons or um… green peppers and one simply makes the most of them. While I may have been sceptical as to whether my taste buds would approve once I tasted it I eagerly dipped in for a hearty second helping.

SWIM FOR HOPE 2014

ON the diArycroQueT cornermANY thanks to all you folks who visited Jennifer Worrall on her birthday, she was really chuffed! Whilst the thank you’s are being said, we need to toss out plenty of accolades and laurels to our ‘Lawn Wizards’, who, against all odds and sweltering weather, managed to get the lawns in pretty good shape for our eP open Door 10 days ago. many, many thanks to Peter Wan-sell and Colin murray for the hours and efforts you put into getting

our lawns looking so good! We’re sorry to hear that Bill Hall has been “proper poorly” lately. Do hope you’ll soon be better. Please come to Croquet again as we’ve missed you!As there is no more Croquet news and no birthdays this coming week, here’s a little chuckle you might have seen before, but worth repeating. Van der merwe was in-vited to a special reception whilst in London. He did more than jus-

tice to the various drinks on offer. Towards the end of the evening, when the band struck up, he felt like dancing. He walked across to a gorgeous figure in scarlet and asked: “may I have the pleasure of this dance?” To which he received an indignant reply: “No, you may not! Firstly you are in no fit state to dance; secondly because it’s the National Anthem being played and thirdly because I’m the Cardi-nal Archbishop of Westminster!”

FIFTeeN swimmers from all walks of life go on standby on the 1st of March for one of the most extreme open wa-ter swimming challenges in South Af-rican waters, in support of the Little Fighters Cancer Trust, a local charity that offers support to children with cancer and their families. The group will attempt the 8km rounding of Cape Point, stretching from Diaz Beach on the western side of Cape Point with its notoriously turbulent waters, to Buffels Bay on the eastern side, taking swimmers through the point where the two oceans (Atlantic and Indian) meet.

The “2014 Swim For Hope” follows on celebrated South African musician and record-holding marathon swim-mer Carina Bruwer’s dramatic solo rounding of Cape Point in April last year, her first open water swim since starting a family in 2007, which saw her battle extreme conditions and left her with severe hypothermia af-ter finishing just 16 minutes shy of her record set in 2004. Having raised R17,500 for the Little Fighters Cancer Trust last year, Carina announced that Swim For Hope will return in the form of an invitational group swim this year, with fourteen experienced open water swimmers joining her on the “most spectacular open water swimming ex-periences in the world”. She says: “I’m

looking forward to sharing this very special open water experience with fellow swimmers, while swimming as a group as opposed to a soloist will undoubtedly result in an even more significant fundraising effort. We have already raised over R30,000 for Little Fighters since launching 2014’s event and I’m optimistic about exceeding our goal of R100,000!”

All moneys raised will go towards the Little Fighters Cancer Trust’s BAG OF HOPe Project. A bag of hope pro-vides essentials for both the Child with Cancer and his/her mother or bedside care-giver, with items such as toiletries, pyjamas, non-perishable food, educational toys, blankets and sanitary products, making a challeng-ing and prolonged hospital stay just a bit more comfortable. LFCT is opera-tional in 11 main paediatric oncology treatment centres throughout South Africa, including the Western Cape, Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal, eastern Cape and Free State.T h e S w i m m e r s

Carina Bruwer (34), who leads the multiple award-winning instrumental pop group Sterling eQ and holds re-cords for numerous swims including the english Channel (fastest SA wom-an), Gibraltar Straits (fastest woman), False Bay (fastest SA woman) and many more, is joined by 12 men and

2 women aged between 24 and 61, all of whom have significant open water swimming experience. Collectively Ca-petonians Justin Coetzee (44), Keith Struthers (55), Monika Hayes (50), Lindsay de Kock (55), Anthony Pearse (44), Martin Vleggaar (36), Neil Hop-kins (32), Chris Westcott (33), Charl Cilliers (45), Clinton Le Sueur (40) and Rouen Smit (24) share dozens of successful Robben Island crossings plus a few records, while Johannes-burg swimmers Colin Gluch (46) and Richard Child (61) have also braved the Cape waters for a number of cross-ings, while Richard also has an english Channel crossing to his name.

The swimmers will be on standby to swim from 1 March, and the swim will be called when conditions are most fa-vourable. The waiting period can be anything from a few days to weeks; regular updates will follow. Members of the public, as well as corporates are invited to follow Swim For Hope’s social media interfaces (facebook and twitter) for live updates from the wa-ter on the day of the swim and are en-couraged to sponsor and donate, us-ing the “BackaBuddy” website (www.backabuddy.co.za).

SUNNY SPORTS FISHING COLUMN

Melissa makes us proudThe South African Shore Angling As-sociation Nationals for Ladies took place at the West Coast in Langebaan this year from the 10th to the 14th of February and the eastern Prov-ince Ladies Angling Team was rep-resented in the competition. The la-dies teams’ fished on the Tuesday at Varkenvlei, Wednesday at the Lapa, and Thursday back at Varkenflei.

Melissa du Randt once again rep-resented her province. This is the fourth year that Melissa has been fishing for the Eastern province La-dies Angling Team. The team con-sists of six members, a coach and a manager.

Melissa, ranked 16th in the coun-try over a period of three years of fishing, started off with a great day’s fishing and so did the team, finishing in second position for the day. Melis-sa caught a total of 10 sharks for the day and was lying in 12th position for the tournament. All the teams on Day 2 had a blinder, fishing in kelp with very little success. Saying that, the team moved into 21st spot with one day of fishing left. By this stage all the ladies were feeling the pres-sure of keeping their team position

and individual positions. At the start of day three, loads of

fish were being caught by all the an-glers. Melissa caught plenty of under sized fish but after lunch managed to get the size that counted. All round the eP Team performed very well for the day. Coaches and managers were overwhelmed by how well the ladies had been doing.

The eastern Province Ladies end-

ed in first position overall, winning GOLD and all the eP Ladies did very well with regards to their individual positions: K. Kapp 6th, H. Potgieter (cpt) 8th, J. Taljaard 14th, M. du Randt 17th, M. Jonck 20th, and e. Re-itz 23rd. This was an amazing finish for such an inexperienced team that had only been fishing for four years and coming from seventh overall last year to winning the Nationals.

Melissa du Randt and Helen Pot-gieter received their president co-lours and will be fishing in the Gus Kulner international tournament in November 2014 at Jeffrey’s Bay, fish-ing against Namibia. Melissa had her heart set on going to the nationals and coming back with her colours, and so she did! Du Randt is the first lady to represent her club at pro-vincial level and to get her National Presidential Colours and is currently lying ninth in South Africa with Hel-en lying 12th overall in a three year ranking. It was three days fishing in different conditions, with calm seas and short casts and it was a learn-ing curve for all. Melissa du Randt is a proud member of the Port Alfred River & Ski-Boat Club.

Scary eyes – the mark of a championJarryd PaULS

ROBIN Peterson has been under fire recently for a string of below-par performances in the national cricket side, ultimately leading to him being dropped for the second Test in the ongoing series against

Australia. Peterson came onto the field as a substitute fielder on the third day of the Test, and fielding at square-leg proceeded to drop a catch that would typically leave a knot in one’s stomach for weeks to come. The fact that the bats-man was Steve Smith, a centurion

from the previous Test, also did little to alleviate the groans from the St George’s Park crowd. However, few took much consideration of the look in Dale Steyn’s eyes at that time. One could argue that it was a match-de-fining moment.

Dale Steyn had been down on pace, and looked altogether flat up to that point in the test. Four overs after the catch was dropped he produced one of the finest deliveries in recent mem-ory to uproot Brad Haddin’s middle stump, before taking four wickets in a sensational spell of reverse-swing bowling to secure a remarkable 231-run victory. That is how to respond to disappointment.

Something special is brewing in

the sporting world. This is an age of champions who never give up. They are the ultimate competitors who do not surrender to the inevitable, but rather storm back and cast fear into their opponents when met with adversity. Rafael Nadal, Lionel Messi, Kieran Reed and Usain Bolt are only a few names that fall into this category.

Perhaps this sort of intensity is what separates those who make it at the top level from those who do not. Often schools today are wary of children becoming carried away and as a result attempt to suppress this aggression on the sporting field. Of course there are boundaries that should be noted and adhered to in school sport, but is that really cause

for quashing the traits of a potential sporting superstar? School coaches should embrace this sort of passion in children, channelling it in such a way that may lead to enhanced per-formance and enable young sports-men to put disappointment aside in the way that Dale Steyn did over the weekend.

South Africans continue to show the world how to overcome difficul-ties. Instead of dwelling on the past, it is in our nature to stand up and be counted. So next time you see a little bit of ‘scary’ in a young sportsman’s eyes after an anti-climax, you may just have found South Africa’s next Dale Steyn. We certainly could do with a few more of him.

Discovery Surfer’s Challenge 2014

The Discovery Surfers Challenge 2014 took place in East London last weekend with hoards of enthusiast joining in the fun. Visit http://www.surferschallenge.co.za/ for the results of the event and visit www.pollocks.co.za to see the stunning 2014 photos. For the last 30 years, surfers, athletes, walkers and paddlers have paced the Eastern cape Shoreline from Yellow Sands at the Kwelera mouth to Nahoon Beach in East London in an annual bout of madness brought on by Surfers Marathon fever.
