PresidenT TROMBONE KELLIE & THE MUDDY ROADERS

JULIE’S REVIEW 21 OCTOBER

Hi There Jazz Lovers,

The year is fast slipping away and will be gone before we know it, but before that happens, we continue to bring you some top jazz and a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

August saw us welcome back the David Bentley Quintet – I do offer our apology for David and his very late arrival which meant that a number of you had to miss the last part of his show because of needing to be on the courtesy bus or other commitments. It was around then that the beat increased and the dancers took to the floor and what a shame to miss the closing number “Georgia” rendered by Annette Henry and strongly supported by Rick Halstead on reeds, which was probably the highlight of the afternoon. For all -thanks for your patience & understanding

As a “thank you” for your continued support, your committee is particularly excited to have brought to you for the first time here at the Coast, The Clarence Jazzmen – WOW! Now that was a real day of fabulous jazz. Warren “Clarence” Byrnes (drums and vocals); Pietro Fine (Clarinet, soprano sax, melodica & keyboard; Bob Dooley (double bass); Dave Stephensen (Trumpet & Trombone) AND special guest Phil Morris from UK (trumpet) really had the place jumping and make it a very hard act to follow. Calls from the audience for MORE! saw an overtime encore from the

band as they were having so much fun. A hard act to follow as it may be, we are sure you will just love Kellie Bennett and her Muddy Roaders when they travel up for an afternoon of fun and ALL THAT JAZZ in October, so do hope to see you there Cheers Julie

BRIAN FANE’S REPORT

On Sunday 19 August, the Club presented Dave Bentley Quintet. Dave on keyboards and vocals finally opened the session with two songs which heralded to the stand Annette Henry who gave great renditions of well- known songs ”It Could Happen to you”, “I Could Write a Book” and other songs which gave Andrew Shaw the space to show his talent with the sterling bowed bass solo. David sang “Loaded Dice” which allowed Nathan Goldman to show his drum technique with a superb solo. Not to be out done, Rick Halstead, on tenor and soprano saxes, showed his versality with great solos and ‘fill ins” for David and Annette’s vocals. There were many great moments of swinging music, including my favorite “Green Dolphin Street”, jazz classics written by guitarist Pat Metheny and trumpeter Clifford Brown. These gave the guys the opportunity to display their musical abilities and excel when playing blues, swing jazz and soul. The afternoon drew to a close with Annette and Rick’s rendition of the Ray Charlies hit “Georgia” – Jazz music doesn’t come much better than that! Thanks to Dave Bentley Quintet and I must give a mention to Sean

and the sound provided to present their music in the best possible way. THE CLARENCE JAZZMEN

Sunday 16th September

From Buddy Bolden to Louis Armstrong to The Duke of Ellington, The Clarence Jazzmen gave the Sunshine

Coast Club audience the music we know and love. With English trumpet star Phil Morris as guest we were taken to

New Orleans to Chicago and New York. The opening “Hello Dolly” with a Louis vocal led into Duke's “Satin

Doll”followed by a raunchy “Comin' Home”. We were really tappin' the tootsies. Warren's vocal of “What a

Wonderfull World' received a great round of applause . Pietro on clarinet finished the first set with inspired

drummimg from Warren and trombone from Dave with Juan Tizol's “Caravan” The next set “It Don't Mean a

Thing” “Georgia” the Nat Adderley “Work Song” added to the enjoyment and our sound man Ben sat in on

keyboards with “Let the Good Times Roll. By this time the floor was buzzing with the dancers. How could you not

enjoy Dave's gutsy trombone solos, Pierto's Clarinet and those sweet notes from Phil on trumpet. The afternoon

closed with the encore of Duke's “C Jam Blues” . Well we didn't have any blues only that the afternoon was over.

Clarence Jazzmen - ,come back - we love your music -. Thanks for a fun afternoon of music
