TIPS By CHAR

ANOTHER USE FOR YOUR SMART PHONES!! Use a camera to PREVIEW COLORS. Snap a picture of color combinations and fabric choices. Remember the old adage – a pic-ture is worth a thousand words or the camera does not lie. The picture could show you what order to sew the strip sets or that the fabric you think will make a good border does anything but. Now you have a valid reason to update your phone – better phone, better camera, better quilts.

SECRETS FOR A MODERN LOOK, courtesy of Diane D. Knott in her book SCRAP QUILT SECRETS.

Choose clear colors and crisp prints.

Enlarge blocks, eliminate pieces, or choose basic patchwork for a bold look.

Add solid fabrics or a white background to give scraps an updated image.

Choose a simple quilting design.

ADDING A STRIP TO A BIAS EDGE: Place the bias edge next to the feed dogs. This helps prevent the bias edge from stretching as you sew.

Barnes & Noble Bookfair

We would like to thank everyone who helped at the bookfair this past December 9. We couldn’t have done it without all the help from our SSQ members! Tentatively, we made $954 from sales that day and gift wrap donations. We will receive a check that also includes online sales. Although we have done better in the past, it is still pretty good for one day spent at Barnes and Noble showing customers what we can do as quilters in SSQ.

Winners for the favorite quilt contest were: 1st place – June Hall and 2nd Place - Marion Biersdorf. Thanks to everyone who turned in all the beautiful quilts for that day – the commu-nity loves to see what we can do!

Thanks to Gini Bright, Linda Smith and Deb Hughes for donating such nice items for our free drawing. The happy win-ners were Arlene Garlitz, Lori Tuttle, Walter Holak and Wilma Chandler.

We would like to thank the management and staff at Barnes and Noble for providing a way for our guild to receive funds to continue our mission of promoting quilting and making quilts and stockings for needy people in our area.

We would like to thank everyone over the past 7 years for supporting our efforts at the Barnes and Noble bookfairs. You all made each and every one a success. We had so much fun over the years and will continue to help whoever decides to take over as chairperson in the following years. We wish you the best of luck!

SSQ General Meeting Minutes, DECEMBER 13, 2017

President Joan Walker called the meeting to order at 10:05 AM, an hour later than usual due to our annual Christmas party. Joan read a Christmas prayer to all to begin the meeting. She then called Charlie Linkem to the front so he could an-nounce that he and his wife are moving to Geor-gia for a job opportunity and he thanked everyone for allowing him to join and participate in the activ-ities of SSQ. It should also be noted that Charlie was one of our long arm quilters who quilted nu-merous quilts for community affairs. Good luck to you and Paula as you continue your life journey. Joan also read a thank you card from one of the recipients of our community affairs quilts who greatly appreciated our kind gesture. Mail also included the Colorado Quilt Council’s Colorado Threads publication, information from the National Quilt Museum and an ad from Ruth’s Toffee in Nucla.

Minutes: After a correction to the November minutes (109 Christmas stockings, not quilts) the minutes were approved after a motion by Gabi Mear and a second by several members. Minutes will be filed.

Treasurer’s Report: October month end check-ing balance: $17,544.39; Revenue: $730.15; Ex-penses: $2,193.51; Account Balances: Checking: $16,081.03; Savings (.31 interest) $12,533.29; Total: $28,614.32. Full report in the January newsletter.

Budget 2018: Linda Smith, treasurer, reported that the board had approved the budget for 2018 which will be printed in the January newsletter. She noted that the members study the Expendi-tures projection of $19,384.00. Our revenue is also projected, but is more of an unknown. Since SSQ is a non-profit, we are required to have a balanced budget. Income must equal expenses. To do this, revenue of $5,504.00 has been taken from our reserves; this amount will change as some of our unknown revenue materializes. (In 2017, the projected deficit was $4770; actual defi-cit is less than $1000. Chili’s revenue was $400 and Barnes and Noble was $1500 – complete un-knowns at the beginning of 2017.) Other items of note are the addition of the Mesa to Monuments quilt show for 2019. There will be expenses as planning occurs in 2018. Also in 2017 our rent for meetings at American Lutheran Church was shared 50-50 with our raffle account monies. In 2018, all rent monies will come from the general fund.

Committee Reports: If you do not have new items to report, stay seated.

Block of the Month: Churn Dash Variation is this month’s block. The Slash Album block with Y seams and parallelograms will be January’s block.

Barnes and Noble Winter: Sherri Creer and Mary Leach reported that as of the general meet-ing, the SSQ book fair had netted $928.19, but there were still 2 days to go in the online sales. They also announced that Marion Biersdorf had won as the viewers’ favorite quilt and that June Hall took 1st place. They again thanked Deb Hughes, Linda Smith and Gini Bright for donating the door prizes for attendees. Thank you to you, Mary and Sherri, for being the co-chairs for BN Winter for several years. 2017 is the last year they are serving in this capacity. Well done!!

Moab Retreat: Judy Kiser reported she had called all those signed up to make sure everyone had a room or roommate if they so wished and a ride. Call her if you have any questions. Detour is the name of the quilt project which will use 2” strips. There is a wait list.

Community Affairs: Kris Murphy wished to thank Nancy Knoll for providing several quilts. Nancy is in Florida where she resides part of the year. She will be a member in 2018. Orchard Stitchers meets the third Tuesday of the month. Last time 13 quilts were layered ready for quilting. This year the totals were 90 to St. Mary’s; 11 to Fruita; 2 lap robes to the VA. There were several given to Habitat for Humanity.

Rendezvous 2018: Feb. 22-23; First Presbyteri-an Church, 27 ½ Road and Cortland; ½ day class = $10 members/ $15 non-members; full day class= $20 for members/ $25 for non-members. Lunch both days will be catered for $8.00 each day. January program will be presented by Ren-dezvous teachers. A few of the teachers made a brief showing of their samples to whet our appe-tites for more. Marilynne Gossett will be doing recycled jeans aprons. Diane Abraham will be doing “Navajo Code Talkers”. Dee Hoaglund will do an open sew on collage quilting. She will be there to help, but not teach the technique. Janet Wheeler showed vinyl window bags.

Membership: 92 members were present.

Installation of 2018 Officers: Joan Walker re-installed Linda Smith as Treasurer after reading the duties of the treasurer and pinning a rose boutonniere on Linda’s garment. Charlene Knoll installed Sue Osborn as secretary after reading the duties of the secretary and pinning a rose boutonniere on Sue’s garment. Gabriela Mear installed Jocie Perotti as vice-president after reading the duties of the vice president and pin-ning a rose boutonniere on Jocie’s garment. Joan Walker installed Yolanda Crawford as pres-ident after reading the duties of the president and pinning a rose boutonniere on Yolanda’s garment.

Recognition of helpers 2017: Joan asked all officers and chairs and co-chairs to come down to the front to receive a token of her apprecia-tion. A picture was also taken for the website.

Gabi Mear, vice president, thanked everyone who helped prepare the fellowship hall for to-day’s party. She especially mentioned Sharon Olander, Patta Reed, Janet Wheeler and Cheryl Phillips who made and/or provided prizes for those in attendance today. Businesses thanked were Fabric Inspirations for a gift certificate, Hi Fashion for 24 small scissors and Tracy Miller for a thread donation from her private stash and from her business the Owl’s Nest a gift certifi-cate.

Yolanda Crawford: Greeted the members by saying she was looking forward to being the 2018 president. She again asked for help from all the members. The positions still open were programs 2019 and both the Spring and Winter Barnes and Noble chairmanships. Other com-mittees could use more helpers as well. Contact Yolanda if you wish to help.

Show and Tell: 16 members showed their pro-jects – many completed for gifts. Joan Walker led off with table toppers for her grandchildren and a pictorial quilt of Lacy, a rescue dog owned by her daughter in Ohio depicted by Debbie Sasser. Wendy Bain proudly displayed a project made by her 9-year-old grandson for his 11-year-old cousin. Sonia Sanderson displayed anoth-er of her award-winning hand appliqued quilts from Black Canyon Quilt Show.

Debbie Sasser showed a completed project from fall retreat – hummingbirds and also a baby quilt of Dresden plates. Diane Abraham showed a quilt she quilted with a pantograph on her Grace Frame.

Kris Murphy displayed Arabian Nights by Ricky Timms which she is calling Dessert Nights. Jo Cornforth displayed a One Block Wonder quilt (her book is available for anyone who wishes to borrow it). She was continuing to add borders when her granddaughter told her to stop; bor-ders were not needed and she wanted the quilt. Helen Baltz-Jones displayed the Exploding Star with 784 triangles – a multi-year project. Pam Lewshenia showed bells with her wall hanging to be presented as a childhood memory to her son. Bruce Rahn presented a quilt for veterans which will be displayed January 23-26 at the Veterans’ Art Festival. Caroline Brueggeman showed her granddaughter’s dog. Bonnie Stenger wore a coat she completed in 2000 with reverse and regular applique – coat is very warm so she wears it very seldom. She and her sister Pam showed their completed sisters challenge using Stonehenge fabric. They also showed their Quilts of Valor with God Bless America quilted in words throughout the quilts. Pam also showed her hand dyed quilt 10 years in the making with 900 half square triangles. June Hall showed her 1997 challenge known as “Memories in the Attic” which won 1st place at BN Winter this year. Great job ladies and gent. Isn’t it wonderful to get projects finished?!

Business portion of meeting was adjourned at 11:00 AM.

2018 PROGRAMS: Wendy Bain, programs chair for 2018 presented a preview of programs for 2018. Jolly Stanford, the workshop pre-

senter for March, presented information on her Navajo Wedding Basket Quilt which can be done in traditional colors or in colors of your choice. Strip sets need to be made prior to the work-shop. Signups began at the December meeting.
