SIB Movie Nights, What a Bargain!

to the scheduled movie. This involves a 25minute interactive activity that usuallyencourages the whole family to participateand is related to the feature film.

Take for example, last month’s feature“Jimmy Neutron, The Boy Genius” sched-uled on February 3rd at Heritage Park andFebruary 4th at Town Center Park. Kidswere rushing to the “Jimmy Neutron’sGreen Slime Laboratory” for the rarechance to make their very own greenslime! Scientist, Kyllene Weiss was on

hand to show everyone how the concoctionwas made and before you know it, every-one was an instant scientist. Once complet-ed, we had mini-black lights to make thissticky mess of fun, glow-in-the-dark! Nowthat’s not something you do every day.

So, be sure to join in on the fun withour next and last for the season, FamilyMovie Night in the Park: Friday, March2nd, 2012 at Heritage Park (19200Collins Ave.) and Saturday, March 3rd,2012 at Town Center Park (17200 Collins

Ave.). The next feature film is “Rugratsin Paris”. Bring your little mini-chefs intraining. We are making delicious dessertcrepes made of strawberries, whippedcream, chocolate syrup and more, prior tothe movie. The best news, the movieand the activity are all free! So no needto worry about breaking the bank and justbring the whole family!

Both Movie Nights begin at 7 PM and endat 9 PM, with the scheduled activity begin-ning at 7 PM, to conclude with our feature

film at 7:30 PM. Feel free to bring foldablechairs, blankets and/or your very own picnicbasket of goodies. If not, blankets are avail-able for rental for $5. Food and beveragesare available for an affordable price, broughtto you by Kiwanis International and TheCity of Sunny Isles Beach. And don’t for-get the Ice Cream truck, Kona Ice, whichwill also be on site. Parking in designatedareas is free! For more information, pleasecall The Cultural and Human ServicesDepartment at 305-792-1706.

If we’ve been born in the United States,we take our language in stride, since wenever had to think what to say, we expect-ed others to understand us. Yet if you wereto listen to someone who wasn’t born hereand spot some of the expressionsthey come up with, you realizehow beautiful out language canbe when others express and trans-late those expressions to ourAmericanese.

As to prove a point, there is myfriend Alex who is madly in love,or like, or whatever, with a stun-ning and charming Brazilianwoman. Her name is Gloria and everythingabout her could be every man’s fantasy.Add a delightful oozing charm and youhave Gloria.

The only thing about all this was that Icouldn’t see what Gloria saw in Alex. He isnot what you could call a “Macho Man” oreven a good dresser and doesn’t even speakPortuguese. So what was the attraction?

Only way to find out. I asked her andshe replied, “Dan dolling (at least I am adolling) is very simple. All my life everyman has been interested in touching mephysically, with Alex was different. I did-

n’t like him at first but at thebeginning we talk and wereable to touch hearts. We feltthat anyone can start downstairsand then maybe touch upstairs.”She paused. “Really Dan,dolling once you touch thebrain and then the heart, every-thing else is natural.”

You’ve grown up with Englishas your language. Could you ever phrase itthat way?

“Touch the brain first, touch the heartstarting first upstairs.” I never realized thatour language could be this beautiful. Theysay that French and Spanish are theRomance languages.

Well move over, please. Gloria has putour language up there with them.

Just recently, SouthFlorida cities were dubi-ously dubbed “MostMiserable” and “TrashiestSpring BreakDestinations” – but SunnyIsles Beach is bucking the

trend, worthy of earning terrific titles likethese:

BBeesstt DDrreesssseedd CCiittyy:: Forget NY’sFashion Week – every day, right here inSunny Isles Beach, you can see bestdressed people accessorized with dazzlingjewelry, perfectly coiffed hairdos, mani-pedis and masterfully applied makeup…Ifwe all look so good at the gym, just imag-ine how much more glamorous we get fora night on the town!

MMoosstt DDiivveerrssee CCiittyy:: Rumor has it trainingfor local retail associates now includesRosetta Stone sessions so when culturallyrich residents and visitors ask questions intheir native tongue, they’ll always be under-stood - even if they’re speaking two, three, four or more languages all at the same time!

SSmmaarrtteesstt CCiittyy:: Deciding to have a“grade A” school in Sunny Isles Beach

was arguably one of the smartest thingscity leaders ever decided to do - becausenow, when all the kids grow up there willbe smart adults who actually know how tooperate all the new high tech devices thatkeep coming out - just when we figuredout how to use the old ones!

FFiirrsstt RRaattee CCiittyy:: Sunny Isles Beach hasone of the lowest property tax rates inMiami-Dade County – so what will we dowith all the money we save? Go shopping(to be good citizens and help stimulate theeconomy, of course!)

TTaannnneesstt CCiittyy:: Isn’t it great we get towear swimsuits in winter instead ofsnowsuits? Sunny Isles Beach hasbecome renowned for having some ofthe greatest tans of any city around – soin order to maintain this golden reputa-tion, please refrain from washing yoursheets in laundry rooms where othersmight see the tanning lotion streaks onyour sheets!

HHaappppiieesstt CCiittyy:: Why is Mona Lisa smil-ing? Perhaps because she heard when itcomes to the fine art of creating the high-est quality of life, the City of Sunny IslesBeach is worthy of the most terrific title:“Masterpiece success!”

Transference is when you redirect yourchildhood thoughts, beliefs and emotionsabout a person onto a new person later inlife. It is a psychological phenomenon thatis usually unconscious.

Transference in the workplace occurswhen certain people and situations are rem-iniscent of your prior relationships and situ-ations. You may not recognize these feel-ings or beliefs as something from the pastand therein lies the danger professionally. You might not have learned how to handlethe original relationship or situation, so youare likely to repeat your reaction to it,regardless of whether or not your reaction isappropriate or inappropriate. This leavesyou very vulnerable because you mightoveract or underreact.

You may be creating a negative scenarioin your mind and all of your interactionswith the current person are based on that.Your father may have been very authoritar-

ian. Your co-worker or your boss mayremind you of your father. This can cause alot of friction and passive-aggressivebehavior on your part. On the other hand, you may remind your co-worker or boss ofsomeone from his past whose behavior hedisapproved of. This is equally dangerous. There is a possibility that you may be fired.

The situation could go the other way andyou could be overly compliant with an indi-vidual because they remind you of a child-hood friend or teacher who liked you. Yourreactions to that person could make youlook weak and ineffectual. This is equallyhazardous.

If you are experiencing any negativeemotions or situations at work don’t justblame the other person. Make an effort tounderstand what is really happening. Lookfor similarities in the person’s appearanceor their mannerisms. Ask yourself if theyresemble anyone from your past. If theydo, you will need to look very closely anddecide if your reactions are appropriate ornot. If the negative reactions are comingfrom them you will have to talk to them in agentle, non-confrontational manner.

Upcoming Events — March 2012

BY ROSLYN BREZIN

The time is now…to be up and about, toenjoy, and to learn. On Thursday, February16th SIB Social Seniors did just that byparticipating in our winery trip.

Many like myself, had visited wineriesbefore but the Schnebly Winery is differ-ent. On part of the property there’s 1.25acres of passion fruit vineyard. There arefifty banana trees with over 20 varietiesof bananas all over the property. Theplants in front of the exquisite waterfallare Monster Delicioso. The grounds areso beautiful that many weddings takeplace there.

Robert Burns, a local architect, designedthe “Grand Tasting Room” where weenjoyed tasting different wines in our com-plimentary glass which were made fromtropical fruit. We also had cheese snacks. The winery has the potential to make about100,000 gallons of wine a year.

Our private bus with our 50 passengersthen took us to a lovely restaurant wherewe enjoyed time to socialize, receive ourremembrance gift, and greet old friendsand make new ones.

Dennis Stubbulo, Chairman, joins me inthanking the Mayor and Commission, theCultural and Human Services Department, and Cary Martinez for making this suc-cessful day possible.

Join our free group for the next twomeetings titled: March’s Magical MusicalMonth on Thursdays, March 8th and 29thfrom 2:00-4:00 pm in the CommissionChambers at the SIB Government Center,18070 Collins Avenue. Enjoy a snack onMarch 8th compliments of the City. OnMarch 29th the snack fee will be $1 for acookout on the patio, participation isoptional.

For more information about future activ-ities of our group call Dennis at 305-206-9459 or Roslyn Brezin at 305-949-1522.

Working out this morning at Equinox, Ifound myself excitedly thinking about all thenew developments coming our way here inAventura, Sunny Isles and the surroundingareas. The cranes are coming back. No, notthe long-legged necked birds but rather thosehefty pieces of yellow machinery primitivelyinvented by the Ancient Greeks in the late 6th

century. Along with the cranes, the developerparties will be back in full swing introducingtheir sexy, streamlined marvels nestledagainst sumptuous picturesque landscapes.

Recently I attended a luncheon at theApogee Beach in Hollywood, located just oneblock north of the Beach Club. There JorgePerez, a Cuban American real estate magnateand author and one of “The 4oo Richest Peoplein America” according to Forbes Magazine ofSeptember 2008, spoke of his grand new proj-ect with intense passion. Following, Cuban cui-sine was on the menu but with a new twist!Rather than the lavish servicing one has beenaccustom to in the past, the gourmet delightswere dished meals-on-wheels style from foodtrucks. Personally I found it amazing, refresh-ing and fun. The only thing missing was a fewextra napkins!

A few weeks later my schedule included abrunch at Bellini of Williams Island. This 24-story tower of 70 exclusive residences cur-rently under development is the powerfulvision of Developer Martin Margulies, also arenowned art collector and founder of theMargulies Art Collection at the Warehouse.Bellini is to be the last residential site onWilliams Island and with that, sales are sur-passing expectations.

Bentley and Mercedes, my two teacupyorkies, were my companions to both events.Bentley, who is practically a veteran of theseaffairs having attended several in the lastyears, was the poised gentleman. Mercedes, only nine months old, was “Kardashian-esque” with much to gossip about! I’m sureDeco Drive is in her future with more of theseevents on the calendar.

Sunny Isles Beach is another area soon to behome to several cranes along the landscape. The iconic developer Gil Dezer who devel-oped Trump is collaborating with the PorscheDesign Group in developing the PorscheDesign Tower. The 57 story, 650 million dollartower promises to be one of the most uniqueluxury beach condo offerings to date. Recentlyunanimously approved by the Sunny IslesBeach Commission, this iconic structure willtransport your car, via a high-speed glass ele-vator, to your front door within 45 to 90 sec-onds – while you’re still enjoying the view. This will be a technological wonder – can’twait!

The Dezer’s are long known as car enthusi-asts collecting since the 1970’. MichaelDezer’s office in Trump sports a classic car asa desk. Gil has a Porsche decorating the wallof his living room. They share a huge collec-tion of American classic cars and memorabil-ia valued in excess of five million dollars. This collection is soon to open as the DezerCollection Museum and Pavillion in NorthMiami’s industrial district, the largest andmost significant car collection in the UnitedStates, this month where the James Bond col-lection will be revealed.

In the good old days I once counted sixteencranes as I drove from Haulover to Aventura.Recently I spoke with the Mayor of SunnyIsles Beach Norman Edelcup who shared withme of six new projects in the works. So theexcitement is returning. The developers areback. The parties and the preconstructionsales have begun. Things are looking up ashigh as the cranes can reach!

The cranes are coming

Henry Norton lives quietly as your neigh-bor in the city. He celebrated a special birth-day recently in the company of family fromaround the country. You might know him asthe UM graduate & attorney who lives nextdoor, or as Jenny’s husband, or as the fatherof those two nice girls, Rita and Susan. Aswith many other WWII Veterans who cameback from the war and quietly contributed toour society, you would never know the obsta-cles he has overcome.

Because of his parents’ desire that their chil-dren have a Jewish education, he spent part ofhis youth separated from them while boardingat a Jewish orphanage and studying in a Jewishday school in Breslau, Germany. With theintensification of Nazi persecution, the familydecided to try to immigrate to America. TheAmerican Consulate would only issue one visafor the family of seven, and his father chosehim, as the oldest of the five children, to moveto America at the age of 15. He was to pavethe way for his siblings and parents to followhim to Rochester, New York.

Henry worked hard in his new country, learned English, and excelled in school andthe workplace. He graduated from highschool and welcomed his brother, Jack, whomade it to America before the war broke out.Another brother, Isidor, would later join themin America after surviving the Holocaust.Unfortunately all other members of his fami-ly including grandparents, parents, anotherbrother and a sister, aunts, uncles, andcousins, perished in the Holocaust.

Because of his skills, Henry had a chanceto stay stateside and work in a defense plantduring WWII. Instead he enlisted and wassoon commissioned a Second Lieutenant andField Artillery Officer. Henry was thenselected for intensive military intelligencetraining at Army Camp Ritchie and he is for-ever now known as a “Ritchie Boy”. The

award-winning documentary film “TheRitchie Boys” depicts their vital secret con-tributions to the war effort. He interrogatedcaptured enemy combatants at the front linesin Italy. He was a member of the exclusive“G2” that planned and participated in of theinvasion of Southern France. He later wasresponsible for all captured enemy docu-ments for the 7th Army. Under the directorders of General Eisenhower, he then trav-eled throughout all European battle zones(French, English, and American), locatingand recruiting for America the leadingGerman rocket scientists, including Wernervon Braun and his brother.

When he was discharged as a Captain with aBronze Star Medal, he followed his heart toMiami and married Jenny. He first worked in apost-war defense plant, and then ran a dry clean-ing business before enrolling in University ofMiami and earning a law degree. Henry has prac-ticed law since 1952 in Miami-Dade County.Happy Belated Birthday Henry and many more!

We have many veterans of the U.S.Military Services in our City. Like Henrythey served their country and then quietlymoved back into civilian life as productivecitizens. Take time to thank a veteran today.

FIRE PLAN REVIEW

I liked the Hyundai Veloster when I firstdrove it at the press preview in Portland, OR,back in October. I like it even more afterspending a week behind the wheel of the lit-tle three-door coupe. It’s nicely designed, very sporty and handles well in traffic and onthe highway.

My only knock on the car was that it wasa bit underpowered, but Hyundai has movedto correct that fault, introducing a new tur-bocharged model for the 2013 lineup. Theturbo version of the Veloster made its worlddebut at the North American InternationalAuto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January. It’s a bookend to Hyundai’s turbochargedsports coupe lineup, paired with therefreshed 274 hp rear-wheel-drive 2013Genesis Coupe 2.0T (Turbo), which alsodebuted at the show.

Veloster is powered by a new 1.6-liter 201hp Turbocharged-Gasoline Direct Injection(T-GDI) engine mated to a six-speed auto-

matic or manual transmission. The T-GDIengine produces 201 hp at 6,000 rpm and 195pounds-feet of torque from 1,750-4,500 rpmwith regular gas, and delivers 27/38 mpgwith manual transmission models.

The Gamma engine has a twin-scroll tur-bocharger that, when combined with theGDI system, results in instantaneous powerdelivery.

Twin-scroll turbochargers are usuallyfound on more expensive high performanceengines. They have two exhaust gas inletsdivided by split walls inside the turbine hous-ing, with both gas passages controlled by awaste-gate. A twin-scroll turbo recoversmore energy from the exhaust than a single-scroll turbocharger, thanks to a divided man-ifold. The twin-scroll design separates thecylinders, whose exhaust gas pulses interferewith each other, resulting in improved pres-sure distribution in the exhaust ports and amore efficient delivery of exhaust gas energyto the turbocharger’s turbine.

The Turbo Veloster has the same 104.3-inch wheelbase as the production Veloster, but the Turbo is 1.2 inches longer (167.3inches) and about a half-inch wider (71.1inches).

It is further distinguished by a sexy sport-tuned engine intake and exhaust note, sport-tuned steering, a unique front fascia, fog-

lights, 18-inch alloy wheels with chromeinserts, a Graphite Black interior with blueaccents and headliner graphics. Full leatherseats with the word “Turbo” stitched into theseatbacks deliver a unique look and offerexcellent support and comfort.

A Supervision Cluster in the dash gives thedriver information in a larger, clearer andmore interactive format, thanks to a pair ofscreens located between the tachometer andthe speedometer. The center stack and con-trols resemble a sport-bike fuel tank and

incorporate a push-button starter and alloypedals. Heated front seats are standard on theTurbo version.

Pricing on the 2012 Hyundai Velosterstarts at $17,300, but an MSRP for the Turbomodel has not yet been released.

CHANGE IN THE AIR? At the Feb. 16 City Commission meet-

ing, Winston Towers resident ArleneKoenig spoke in favor of the resolutionsupporting a smoking ban in commonareas of condominiums, noting, “This is abold step - change is in the air and [theSunny Isles Beach City Commission] is atthe forefront of initiating thischange…Let’s be ‘progressive and proac-tive.’ States that have already restoredlocal control of smoke free air includeLouisiana, Illinois, New Jersey, Delaware,Iowa, Nevada and Oregon; and I’m hop-ing this resolution will be the first step toinclude Florida on that list.

“We all know how dangerous second-hand smoke is and that it kills about443,000 Americans every year. Whensomebody is smoking on their terrace theyare [virtually] smoking in your apartment, which is a health hazard to you and yourenvironment and can cause illness. On apersonal note, I will be 67 next week and[passing] this resolution is the best birthdaygift I can get - plus the gift from my oncol-ogist who gave me thumbs up for beingfour years cancer-free.”

Commissioner Jeanette Gatto stated,“This resolution was initiated by [ArleneKoenig] who has experienced secondhandsmoke floating into her unit and it generat-ed a bigger conversation about multi-unitdwellings where we all share space.Whether we like it or not, in condos we’reinherently sharing air space and commonareas so it’s very difficult to dodge ciga-rette smoke - especially secondhandsmoke, which is documented to be verydangerous to your health.

“This [resolution] urges the FloridaLegislature to amend the Clean Air Act toprohibit smoking in all common areas – thepool area, parking garages, patios and bal-conies. There are a lot of situations wheresmoke is drifting into other units. We’regoing to press hard for this and urge ourlegislators to [address] this because wethink it’s extremely important given thefact that secondhand smoke is toxic anddangerous “

Commissioner Isaac Aelion pointed out,“As president of a condo building, I get a lotof complaints from residents who live abovesmokers units and indeed [the smoke] rises.I’ve experienced firsthand when an individ-ual smokes on a [highrise] balcony, auto-matically, the smoke goes to the upper bal-cony and inside [a unit] if the sliding doorsare open, so it is very appropriate that this

resolution is being brought before us.”Gatto added, “I [also personally] have a sit-uation where I have a bedroom that is fivefeet away from my neighbor’s balcony and[the cigarette smoke] is drifting sideways soit really is impossible to control because it’sdictated by where the wind is blowing.”

ALARMING STATISTICS According to the Center for Disease

Control, tobacco use - including cigarettesand various forms of smokeless tobacco –have led to more deaths than HIV, illegaldrug use, motor vehicle accidents and actsof violence combined. The CDC alsoreports that breathing in secondhand smokehas an instant effect on a person’s cardio-vascular system. Even a slight exposurecan damage blood vessels and cause bloodplatelets to become sticker. Over time, these changes can result in heart diseaseand heart attacks.

People regularly exposed to secondhandsmoke have a 20 to 30 percent greaterchance of developing lung cancer thanthose who are not exposed as often.Secondhand smoke refers not only to thesmoke that wafts from the end of a burningcigarette, but also the smoke that isbreathed out by the smoker.

Multi-unit housing structures such ascondominiums where smoking is allowedis a special concern and subject ofresearch. According to the FloridaDepartment of Health, secondhand smokecan seep through lighting fixtures, cracksin walls, around plumbing, under doors, through shared ventilation, as well as per-meate building materials, and then enteradjoining units. Secondhand smoke can-not be controlled with ventilation, aircleaning or by separating smokers fromnon smokers.

Many U.S. local and state governmentshave decided that protecting the health ofpeople in public places is of the utmostimportance. Many have passed cleanindoor air laws. Although the laws varyfrom place to place, they are becomingmore common. According to the New YorkSun, secondhand smoke is overtaking noiseas one of the most common complaintscoming before condo boards.

Locally, as of Jan.1, 2012, AventuraHospital and Medical Center became a“tobacco-free” campus. No smoking ortobacco use is permitted inside the mainhospital garages the Cancer Center, or any-where on the hospital campus includingsurrounding medical buildings.

PROTECTING YOUTHSDuring the Feb. 16 City Commission

meeting, the issue of candy flavored tobac-co being marketed to young people wasalso addressed. Koenig introduced youthsinvolved with the Students WorkingAgainst Tobacco for Miami-Dade initiativealigned with the Florida Department ofHealth’s Tobacco Free work group.

Koenig and the students explained,“We’re very concerned about the issue ofcandy flavored tobacco. It targets new users- the majority of which are kids. Studiesshow that 17-year-old smokers are threetimes as likely to use flavored cigarettes assmokers over the age of 25. Almost 90 per-cent of adult smokers began smoking asteenagers…We want to prevent youthsfrom beginning to use these cancer causingproducts by getting them off the shelves.

“This policy is not aimed at the fewadults using these products who can easilyswitch to other products - but at protectingour youth. Some facts: Twenty percent ofsmokers ages 17-19 smoked flavored ciga-

rettes while only six percent of smokersover the age of 25 reported smoking fla-vored cigarettes.

“Eighty percent of smokers startedbefore the age of 18. This ban will helpstop the more than 3,600 young peoplewho start smoking daily. We would like toask [the Sunny Isles Beach CityCommission] to pass a policy [related to]taking these products off the shelves andprotecting our youths.”

In response, Mayor Norman Edelcupsaid the issue concerning tobacco target-ing youths would be considered at afuture Commission meeting. Explainingthe process, City Manager Alan Cohensaid, “When [proposed] legislation isbrought before the Commission it takessome time to develop. City staff has towrite it – and the City Attorney has toreview it. The legislative process is adeliberative one that does take sometime…So this will go through the chan-nels and hopefully come before theCommission at some point.”
