Jane is a devoted sickey. You name a dis-ease and she has had it or will have it in thenear future. She is an 80-year-old, whoaccording to her, has never beenhealthy in her entire life. She hasoutlived three husbands andcountless lovers but to her therehas never been a week that shehas been healthy. She lives in avery busy senior community andshe participates in all phases ofsame. However she will tell youevery symptom she has completewith the latin names thereof.

She is upset that her daughter, 55, is hav-ing a slew of “women’s problems”and herdoctor wants her to go through all sorts oftests, which she has never had done to her.Doesn’t understand where her the daugh-ter’s symptoms come from. Maybe thesickly grandmother who died at 98. Shefeels her daughter imagines her sickness, unlike Jane who is truly sick. She feels thedaughter should change doctors till shegets the right one. After all she has con-

stantly done that till she gets one that thinkslike her.

As her illnesses have come and gonequickly she still keeps a medicaldictionary by her to check thediagnoses.

The other day she was quiteinsulted. Her latest doctor (justout of Med school) with whomshe felt she had a nice relation-ship sent her a registered lettertelling her that he was resigningas her doctor and to kindly find

another one who might agree with herselfdiagnosis. He even had the nerve to suggesta witch doctor out of Puerto Rico thatmight be on her plane of thought.

This has her very upset. What does awitch doctor from Puerto Rico know thatwill help her with her many ailments?Aren’t there any in the States that she cancontact? This doctor has utterly taken herauthority to choose whatever doctor shewants.

Maybe she will sue him.

Amid much fanfare, the City of Sunny IslesBeach website was launched inFebruary 2003. Special exhibitswere displayed at SamsonOceanfront Park showcasing theCity’s past, present and future; and afireworks display was presented as agrand finale to the evening!

As with any technology, makeovers and revisions are need-ed on a regular basis. The SunnyIsles Beach website has beenupdated twice in the ten years andnew features have been added asthe need arose. Now, it is time for amajor overhaul. This update will serve two pur-poses: 1) addressing the evolving needs of ourresidents and 2) providing information to visi-tors that vacation on our shores.

Knowing that this website upgrade was on thehorizon, the city hired someone to take on thejob. Meet Web and Social Media Specialist, LeahEinwalter. Even though Leah is relatively new tothe City, she brings extensive experience in webdesign and video production. She has calledSouth Florida her home since 2009 when shearrived from Iowa where she attended University

of Northern Iowa graduating with a Bachelor ofArts in Electronic Media/Marketing.

Leah wears many hats and her title is in factmisleading. Along with handling the website,

the email communication systemand the online connection to cityservices (Ask City Hall), she alsoassists in the video production andphotography section. You may haveseen her at events snapping picturesof venders and participants. Shealso mans one of the two videocameras at our Four Season per-formances and other City events.

Leah has jumped in with bothfeet; beginning with handlingupdates to the present site and ismoving on to planning the website

makeover. As she works on the design, empha-sis will be placed on user-friendly navigationand addressing the ever-changing way peopleaccess the web. Future integration may includesocial media and mobile applications as the Cityof Sunny Isles Beach strives to improve all linesof communication with our residents and visi-tors. We invite you to visit www.sibfl.net overthe next few months as the re-design of thehome page and corresponding links progress. For any questions please give a call to Culturaland Community Services at 305.792.1706.

My brother Michaeland I were among themore than 1,000 children, teens, parents, grandpar-ents and supporters whowalked in the fourth annu-al Walking 4 Friendship

on Sunday, Feb. 10. The 3K Walk andCarnival benefited the Friendship Circle, agroup that offers amazing programs forchildren with special needs.

It was so rewarding to see the happyfaces of the children and families whoselives are touched by the activities and pro-grams of the Friendship Circle, and themany teenage volunteers who are thelifeblood of the program’s success.

This year’s walk was bigger and betterthan ever. Hats is off to Rabbi Yossi Harlig,Nechama Harlig and Heather Utset fororganizing this heartwarming annual eventthat brings the community together to ben-efit such a wonderful cause.

It was great to see several local organiza-tions supporting this year’s efforts with spon-sorship tables. It was fun to watch the childrenenjoying carnival rides and crafts. And, we allenjoyed the live entertainment on stage.

There was a rousing martial arts demon-stration by Kia Kidz. The barbershop quar-tet style-group, the Singing Miamians ofPinecrest, was a big hit with the crowd. And, the children of the FriendshipCircle’s guitar program, along with manyothers, gave memorable performances.

Honorary volunteer Alexis Greenberg, ayoung adult with autism, joined Nechamaand this year’s top fundraiser, Joe Roismanof Perry Ellis International, to cut the rib-bon and kick off the event. It truly was apowerful moment.

Michael and I want to thank everyone whosupported us in our efforts to raise money forthe Friendship Circle. The money raised is cru-cial to continuing this empowering programthat makes a difference in the lives of childrenwith special needs and their families. The SIB Social Seniors gathered onThursday January 17, 2013 at Pelican ParkCommunity Center to enjoy another greatevent. Chairman Dennis Stubbolo beganby introducing Laura Hoffman of FiveStar Premier Residence of Hollywood, who gave a presentation to our memberson the benefits of living in an assisted liv-ing facility.

Next was the hi-light of the afternoon, avirtuoso performance by the DynamicDuo of Eddy and Michael. EddyShraybman is a Concert Violinist andMichael Bendoym is a Concert Pianist. Asa surprise to all, they brought with them abeautiful Russian singer that brought theaudience to a great ovation of cheering forall of them. A great time was had by all andthe music was just magnificent. After theconcert, Italian food from Sbarro’s wasserved. For those of you who haven’tattended our shows, come out and see whatall the fun is all about by calling for infor-mation.

Like we also say, this was just anothermagnificent day in paradise enjoyed by allwho came out to see the show. Our group ison a mission to enhance the quality of lifefor the Social Seniors in our community byoffering events for them to attend. We feelthat we contribute to our city becoming agreat place to live, work and play. In theFebruary 2013 Aventura Magazine, KevinMaloney of Property Markets Group(PMG) a real estate development companysaid that, “…the good news for HollywoodFlorida is that because of Sunny IslesBeach, Hollywood has become an emerg-ing market.” So as you can see, we evenhelp the surrounding cities become a betterplace to live. We want to thank all ourmembers for the support they give us byattending our events and trips. We havehad a very successful year so far, so let’skeep it going.

The SIB Social Seniors group had anoth-er fabulous bus trip on Sunday January 27,2013. The trip started with a, “GoodMorning to everyone. This is your Captainspeaking and today we will use first nameson this trip, like a family outing. My nameis Dennis and my Co-Captain is Alphonsowho will be doing all the driving today. Mylieutenants are Roz and my wife Diane andthe city employee Marie (who all did anexceptional job in helping me). I would likeeveryone else to sit back and just enjoy thistrip today.”

We traveled from SIB GovernmentCenter directly to Versailles Restaurant fora delicious brunch in our very own room.

After brunch we headed over to PinecrestGardens to see the 10th Annual Fine ArtsFestival and Farmers Market. Then afterwe all walked around the fair, we got backon the bus to travel to our tour of the mag-nificent Biltmore Hotel. We found out theBiltmore Hotel is the 1926 Crown Jewel ofCoral Gables.

The Biltmore is an elegant Florida Hotel, whose halls echo with the history of one ofthe most fashionable resorts in the countryduring the 1920 and 1930’s. It offers a lux-urious location, spacious accommodations, spa, pool, meeting rooms and superior din-ing. The Biltmore’s landmark swimmingpool is the largest hotel pool in the

Continental United States. It is a 700,000gallon, 23,000 square foot pool. It is truly athing of lasting beauty.

At the conclusion of the day, it wasagreed that everyone aboard had a greattime and are looking forward to many moretrips in the future.

The SIB Social Seniors brought us anoth-er magnificent quality musical show onFebruary 1, 2013 in our very own NormanS. Edelcup SIB K-8 School cafeteria. Wehad over 150 adoring fans clearly there tosee the one and only Biana!

Chairman Dennis Stubbolo welcomedeveryone to this special program and askedSunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman S.

Edelcup to introduce a VIP in the audience.Mayor Edelcup invited to the stage our veryown U.S. Congresswomen, DebbieWasserman Schultz, representing Florida’s23rd Congressional District and theChairwoman of the Democratic NationalCommittee. She welcomed every one andthanked all for electing her to another termas our U.S. Representative in Congress.

Dennis gave thanks to the small army ofvolunteers and city personnel who helpedpull a show like this together, for the pleas-ure of our residents. It takes a lot of dedi-cated people to help run events that are theenvy of all the cities around us.

With the formalities complete, it wastime for the One and Only Biana Pinchuk“Live in Concert”. She is our City’s veryown special prodigy, a gifted 10 year old, future star of our Universe. Her voice is bigand powerful and at the same time has amusical operatic tone. She sang and playedthe violin to 14 of the most beautiful oper-atic and Broadway tunes of all times. Bianawrote and performed her new original song“River of Musical dreams”.

At the end of the show, her parents andgrandparents came up on the stage to cheer-ing and applause from the audience. Bianawill be doing a five city tour in the futureand she is definitely not one to be missed. This was a performance that we willremember for a very long time.

After the show, finger foods and coffeewere served to complete another magnifi-cent day in paradise enjoyed by all whocame out to see this very special show.

BY DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ

Since 1968, more than 400,000 Americans have beenkilled with guns. Each day, an average of 34 Americanswill die as a result of gun violence.

This is totally unacceptable and it is time for a nationalconversation about the astronomical gun violence in theU.S. and how we can curb this terrible problem.

The devastating events last month in Newtown,Connecticut have spurred a national debate about our exist-ing gun laws and mental health care system. First as a statelegislator and now as a Congresswoman — and as a parent– I’ve been an advocate for sensible gun safety measuresthroughout my entire career.

That’s why I’ve started a series of roundtable discussionswith local officials, law enforcement agencies, gun owners, hunters, advocacy organizations, and victims of gun vio-lence, so that I can hear directly from South Floridiansabout what’s happening right here in our community. In thecoming months I plan to host more such discussions to hearideas for moving forward toward real progress on thisissue.

In Washington, I’ve been part of the Gun Violence

Prevention Task Force, and over the last couple of monthswe have met with people on both sides of the aisle and allsides of the issue to develop a comprehensive set of policyprinciples that respect the Constitution’s second amend-ment and will make our schools, neighborhoods, and com-munities safer.

We will continue to meet with our constituents across the

country to help ensure all voices are heard in this importantnational discussion. As my dear friend Gabby Giffords saidat a recent Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, “Violenceis a big problem. Too many children are dying. We must dosomething. It will be hard, but the time is now.” We mustheed Gabby’s words and rise to the occasion to find com-mon-sense solutions for curbing gun violence in our coun-try.

While there is no one action we can take that will everprevent all gun violence, I think that we simply must findsome common ground in order to move forward on sensi-ble measures that can help prevent future tragedies. Weowe it to the victims of gun violence to make it possible forall of us to be safe in our communities.

I am proud to be an advocate for the people of SouthFlorida, and my office is open to you. You can reach usin Pembroke Pines at 954-437-3936, in Aventura at 305-936-5724 and in Washington, DC at 202-225-7931. I’malso available online athttp://wassermanschultz.house.gov, where you can signup for my electronic newsletter, and on Facebook atRepDWS where you can stay up-to-date on what I’mdoing for South Florida.

The time is Now to stop the violence

BY RABBI YISRAEL BARON

Imagine looking down at alarge marble stone in its natu-ral state, never cut from theearth, not yet trimmed or pol-ished. Now imagine thisstone, still in its raw state, being used as a primitiverough floor of a building that

was built on top of it. But then, in order to pro-tect people from tripping on rough bumps in themarble stone, the decision was made to apply alayer of cement right on top of it. Then, shinylinoleum tiles were used as a finishing touch togive it some “elegance.”

Oh, and then a fancy border was added and acoat of wax was put on top of that to give it anextra shine.

Does that make sense? What’s wrong withthis story? I can hear you shouting, “Hey stupid! Why not take advantage of the marble stonefloor that was there to begin with?”

Granted, it takes more work to cut and shinemarble than to lay down linoleum, but the workis well worth it. I am not just referring to thesheer beauty and elegance of the finished prod-uct. I am also referring to the naked innocenceof it. Here is a floor that is genuine and unique,in contrast with the linoleum which is only aveneer, a cover over the less-appealing reality of

the cement underneath it.I ask myself: How often do I superimpose

upon my character all sorts of veneers, in orderto avoid doing the work needed, to show off thenatural beauty of my own character, that justneeded some refinement, some polishing?

The work begins with the advice of theMishna, “acquire yourself a friend.” With agood friend we have much to gain. But to“acquire” means that there is an expenseinvolved. Still, the Mishna implies that this is aworthy investment. To acquire a good friendyou need the skill of moving from being intro-vert to extrovert for the purpose of building adeeper relationship.

An introvert protects his vulnerabilities bybeing withdrawn. The unconscious thinking ofthe introvert is, “If I don’t expose myself toomuch, I cannot get hurt.” There is always thenatural fear of people taking advantage of hisweak points, but in reality, the walls of insecuri-ty are a huge billboard advertising the introvert’sweaknesses. People can sense the walls of inse-curity put up by the introvert.

“What does he have to hide?” people mightask. When an introvert makes that leap andreadies himself to expose his weaknesses andthus better himself, it will give him the ability tobe more grounded in reality. This process ofself-discovery can make a person more honestwith himself.

Aside from saying, “acquire for yourself afriend,” the Mishna goes on to say, “make foryourself a teacher.” So, why do you need botha friend and a teacher? And why is the term“make” used for the teacher and “acquire” usedfor the friend?

The short answer is that there is no free lunch.According to the investment of your effort is theextent of your reward. To build a deep relation-ship with your “friend” who is your peer, youneed to “acquire” – you need to pay in the “cur-rency of effort.”

A relationship is about two different indi-viduals coming from two different places andmeeting somewhere in the middle. That takeseffort. It takes more work to build a relation-ship with a friend than with a good teacher. That is because a teacher, being the leader, will put more effort into the relationship andmove to meet you where you are.

So, while the “teacher” is good for the stu-dent, promoting and encouraging introspectionand growth. It is actually the friend which canbe the deeper catalyst for change, since thefriendship with a peer requires more investmentinto the relationship. In contrast, the nature ofthe student-teacher relationship, requires lesseffort on the part of the student, and thus canyield lesser results. The teacher can actuallyinhibit growth by being so accessible and notdemanding reciprocal effort.

Beyond the relationship you may have witha teacher or a friend, there is a third evenmore demanding relationship which yieldsthe most results. Like when you take onresponsibilities for others, such as being aparent or a caretaker. That is being the ulti-mate giver in a relationship. In such a posi-tion, you obligate yourself to search within, and to find the resources within yourself toprovide for the needs of others. That is whyI thank my children for making me who I am.A whole new experience in life began when Ibecame a parent.

Now let’s go back to our marble floor analo-gy. Just as we don’t want to cover over the mar-ble with cement, linoleum, shiny wax and soforth, so too we have no need as people to hidebeneath shallow veneers, as we avoid facing thework it takes to let the inner beauty shine. Wemust let the unabashed naked beauty of ourcharacter shine, as we are challenged to unleashthe resources that hide deep within us.
