Just as the Pilgrims set foot in theNew World on December 11,1620, pioneers dedicated to takingcontrol of their own destiny andforging the City of Sunny Isles

Beach accomplished their goal on June 16,1997 and ever since, there has been much to bethankful for.

‘PIONEERS OF PROGRESS’One of the most proactive chapters in the

Sunny Isles Beach “Thanksgiving Story” datesback to the early 1990’s when Miami-DadeCounty still ruled and citizens subject to pay-ing property taxes were not reaping therewards associated with living in their owncity.

A group of people rallying for incorporation, known as “Concerned Citizens of NortheastDade” were led by civic activists including thelate Mayor David Samson. Brave and persist-ent, they made a pilgrimage downtown andsecured support from a strong ally - Sen.Gwen Margolis.

After freedom fighters formed a CharterCommission and drafted a Charter there was alandslide vote in favor of incorporation and theCity of Sunny Isles Beach was officially born. But this was just the start of greater things tocome. In 1997, newly elected members of theCity Commission began the challenging task

of transforming a declining tourist destinationinto a vibrant, progressive city.

‘A NEW WORLD OF DIFFERENCE’One of the first promises kept by the City

Commission was the formation of a first-classPolice Department. Thanks to a tribe of offi-cers known as “the best in blue,” criminalsbehaving like wild Indians no longer posed agreat threat to peace and security; state-of-the-art patrol cars could ride like the wind torespond to calls; and a philosophy of commu-nity policing prevailed.

With motorcycles, all terrain vehicles, jetskis and boats, vigilant patrols were alwayslooking out for the welfare of citizens. Positivechanges were happening fast…the only thingslowing down was traffic on Collins Avenueand around interior neighborhoods welcomingreduced speed limits.

From the startup of a convenient shuttle busservice - to the creation of a Cultural andHuman Services Department planning trips, concerts and special events for the whole com-munity to enjoy, the wheels of progress contin-ued to turn.

She’s 45 now and wonders where thetime has gone.

When she was in her 20s and early30s, her ambition was to make love allday and to eat grapes at the same time. She had the appetite then and still does. There is a difference though. At 25 shehad the candidates all over the place.Today there aren’t so many especially inher age category.

There’s another minor problem. She’s gotten into religion in a big way.

Very straight laced. She teaches Sunday school. This has

become a problem with her beliefs andher body. The body still wants to do thegrapes and love bit and her mind doesn’tthink it’s such a good idea.

The solution is that on Sunday themind controls. During the week there istoo much body and the mind doesn’tfunction on these matters.

There’s been a bit of a dilemma oflate.

One of the kids that she used to teachin Sunday is in his mid 20s and returnedto the church as Assistant Pastor. He hassent all the signals for doing love andgrapes action with her.

She is a bit flattered that he is interest-ed but someone she taught Sundayschool to - also, Assistant Pastor of hervery far right church?

The choir is something he is trying tobuild up but if she joins the choir itmight not get off the ground. Will he beable to have the energy to handle thechoir and her grapes operation? TheAssistant Pastor and only twenty-five?She looks in the mirror and it’s easy tosee where her mind might be. But reali-ty doesn’t make it such a good idea.Maybe she should really pray harder fora 45 year old graper to show up.

With Thanksgiving justaround the corner, every-one’s thinking about eatingturkey and watching foot-ball - but what aboutreflecting upon the plethora

of things city residents are thankful for? Here are just some of the assets enticingpeople from all over the world to make a“pilgrimage” to Sunny Isles Beach….

TThhaannkkss ffoorr tthhee IImmpprroovveemmeennttss:: Thecity’s budget includes funding for ongoingcapital improvements, new parks plusmany more great municipal assets…Infact, the list of improvements is so long, even Santa may not be able to match all the“gifts that will keep on giving” for manyyears to come.

TThhaannkkss ffoorr tthhee GGrreeaatt SScchhooooll:: Parentsand kids are still celebrating the A gradesearned by the K-8 Sunny Isles BeachCommunity School….Rumor has it, a“customized” curriculum may soon beintroduced featuring classes like “Tanning101”; “Condo Board Meeting Etiquette”;and a class that should be mandatory forsuch a diverse community: “InternationalRelations.”

TThhaannkkss ffoorr TTrraaffffiicc SSaaffeettyy:: The city isalways stepping up efforts to keep SunnyIsles Beach streets safe – but ever wonderif it would just be easier to make it manda-tory for every citizen to ride the city’s shut-

tle bus? Then there would be a lot less traf-fic and instead of paying for expensivegas, you could buy an even bigger turkeyfor Thanksgiving dinner – or better yet –have it gourmet catered from the Epicuremarket!!

TThhaannkkss ffoorr AAllll tthhee FFuunn:: Concerts, movie nights, trips, sports programs andspecial holiday events are always beingplanned by the city’s Cultural and HumanServices Department that has inadvertentlytapped into the secret to world peace:Parties like the recent “Booogie by theBeach” promoting unity with an unbeat-able weapon: Free food!

TThhaannkkss ffoorr tthhee TTeecchhnnoollooggyy:: Now thatparks in Sunny Isles Beach have wirelessInternet access, it’s easier than ever to logon to the city’s high-tech website(www.sibfl.net) and keep up to date onimportant city news, meetings and specialevents. You can find just about everythingyou’re looking for – except a greatdate…so if you’re single, you may want toemail a suggestion that the city add a linklike “Sunny Perfect Match.com”

TThhaannkkss ffoorr tthhee PPrrooggrreessss:: Overall, resi-dents agree they enjoy life in the cityknown as “Florida’s Riviera” where luxu-ry now reigns supreme. So when you’restuffed from all the turkey and it’s thefourth quarter, just look outside your win-dow and join in reciting this aproposmantra: Every day is Thanksgiving Day inSunny Isles Beach!

When negative things are happeningin your life, it is not unusual to feel very, very alone and very, very helpless. Youmay feel that you have no one to protectyou and no one to support you. You mayfeel that you have no assistance and noone to give you a hand. You probablywant help but do not know where to turnor how to go about securing it. Your lifemay feel out of control. You may feel thatyou are in a downward spiral, going fromone crisis to another.

Sometimes in the middle of a crisis itmay seem as if everything is bad, upset-ting and frightening. In difficult times ofdarkness and despair it is important toremember that there is a force in theUniverse called “Divine Intervention.” Itis a force that alters your life in unforeseenways and makes it better. That’s when a

negative situation becomes a positive situ-ation.

So when you are in the midst of astorm tell yourself that even if it seemsbad it could turn out to be good. As con-tradictory as it may seem, force yourself torelax and curb your negative, fearfulthoughts. Trust that things will have a pos-itive outcome. You may not understandhow the situation could ever be positivebut it is possible. A car fender-bender, forinstance, is bad, but meeting your futurehusband because of it, is good. An adversereaction to a recreational drug is bad butending your addiction is good.

Allow your mind to believe in a posi-tive outcome. It will calm you in the midstof the crisis. When you change yourthoughts, even for a moment, you generatepositive chemical reactions in your mindand body that will empower you andincrease your ability to cope with the situ-ation. You will experience a feeling ofserenity and hope. You will feel peace-ful instead of fearful. And that will trulyfeel “Divine”.

Historians have recently focused onthe incompatibility of slavery with the nat-ural rights philosophy of our FoundingFathers in our American Revolution.According to historian Gary B. Nash, “TheAmerican Revolution represented thelargest slave uprising in our history.”Patrick Henry justified our revolution:“Give me liberty or give me death!”Jefferson’s Declaration of Independencestated, “All men are created equal and enti-tled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happi-ness.” While those inalienable rights wereuttered, not one word applied to about500,000 enslaved people. Our light of liber-ty was a “pillar of darkness for slaves.”

In 1772, it was ruled that slavery inEngland was illegal. In our RevolutionaryWar, the British made it general policy tooffer liberty to our escaped slaves. Blacks“secretly wished the British would win, forthen all slaves might gain their freedom.”In both the North and South, “thousands of

slaves fled whenever the British forceswere within reach.” Virginia’s RoyalGovernor, Lord Dunmore, promised free-dom for all slaves who fled their mastersand joined British regiments fighting theAmericans. Flight to fight, however, wasdifficult for many slaves, according toNash, “because they would be leavingbehind wives, children and elderly to themercy of revengeful masters.” Jeffersonestimated that 30,000 slaves fled their mas-ters during the British invasion of Virginiain 1781. A 21 year old slave named Titus isillustrative. He fled his master, joined blackregiments in Virginia under Lord Dunmore, renamed himself Colonel Tye, returned toNew Jersey and organized other blacks tofight against the Americans. For five yearshe fought his own American Revolution, before dying from battle wounds.”

Thousands of slaves “who fled to theBritish to fight the Americans died of battlewounds, and many who survived the warwere evacuated in 1783 to Florida, Jamaicaand Nova Scotia.” Seventy eight years later, over 600,000 Americans died in a Civil Warover slavery. Our Founding Fathers couldhave ended slavery and proclaimed theirequal right to life, liberty and the pursuit ofhappiness for which we Americans fought awar for our independence.

cleaning up the streets and removing over-grown brush. Code Enforcement encouragedcitizens to be law abiding and promote anupscale image.

The Building Department recruited a teamof expert officials and inspectors. TheFinance Department helped draft feasiblebudgets; highly qualified zoning and com-munity development experts were chargedwith promoting optimal development. AnAdministrative Services Department wascreated to keep things running smoothly. And a Cultural and Human Services wasestablished to plan enriching, entertaining“community unity” events for residents of allages to enjoy.

‘PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE’Pioneers of progress were called into

action once again when a Citizens’ PlanningAdvisory Committee was formed to helpdraft a Comprehensive Plan shaping thefuture of development in Sunny Isles Beach.Working late into the night in Commissionchambers (formerly located in an RKShopping Center), residents, business andcommunity leaders discussed pivotal issuessuch as beach access and zoning codesdesigned to foster optimal development

along Collins Avenue and Sunny IslesBoulevard.

Soon, old rundown motels along the eastside of Collins Avenue started to disappearand multi-million dollar developments beganto rise. Relics of the past like Colonial Innwere replaced with the futuristic Pinnacle byJ. Milton & Associates, The Related Group’sOcean One…Two…Three, etc. And soonafter, international publications announcedthe triumphant news that Donald J. Trump, the Trumps of Williams Island, TurnberryAssociates and other world-famous develop-ers such as Fortune International were land-ing on Sunny Isles Beach.

As property values continued to climb, taxesstayed low - but adhering to the motto “goodisn’t good enough,” the City Commission votedto embark on another ambitious initiative sup-porting the goal to make Sunny Isles Beach thejewel of South Florida.

‘SWEEPING CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS’While residents of Golden Shores were

cheering a much needed stormwaterdrainage and street paving project, powwows were being held and the CityCommission ultimately voted for a “feastyour eyes on this” comprehensive capital

improvement plan benefiting the entire city.Primarily targeting beautification, park

development, a streetscape plan, future prop-erty acquisitions and road resurfacing, thecapital improvements would promote thehighest quality of life - yet Sunny IslesBeach would still maintain one of the lowestproperty tax rates in Miami-Dade County.

In keeping with the pioneer spirit, aMayor’s Advisory Council was alsoformed so residents could provide input tothe City Commission while volunteeringto serve on committees relating to issuessuch as traffic, education/schools and longrange planning.

Accomplishing even more visionary proj-ects, a gala groundbreaking ceremony at theTony Roma’s site marked the beginning of con-struction for the magnificent new GovernmentCenter now gracing Collins Avenue.

As the city welcomed more and moreSunny Isles Beach settlers including manyfamilies with children, the Commission real-ized the need for city parks and a school.Continued efforts to acquire land and grantfunds helped make the dream come tofruition as park dedications ensued and theSunny Isles Beach Community Schoolopened in the fall of 2008.

MUCH MORE TO BE THANKFUL FOR In 1676, the town council of Charlestown,

Massachusetts officially declared a day ofThanksgiving and now in 2010, the SunnyIsles Beach City Commission has pledged tocontinue forging ahead with progressive ini-tiatives.

Recently re-elected, Sunny Isles BeachMayor Norman Edelcup has served on theCity Commission since 2001; been a residentof the city since 1969; and has earned a stel-lar reputation in the community for being aninvolved citizen, successful businessmanand generous philanthropist.

Following the death of the city’s firstMayor, David Samson, Edelcup, who wasserving as Vice Mayor at the time, wasappointed interim Mayor in 2003.Subsequently, he declared his intent to run forthe mayoral seat in a special election - butsince the qualifying deadline passed with nocandidates opposing Edelcup, he was declaredthe new Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach. Civicactivist Roslyn Brezin was then been appoint-ed to fill Edelcup’s Commission seat.

Due to term limits, Brezin was not able torun in the November 2010 election. The can-didate filling Brezin’s Commission Seat 4will either be Isaac Aelion or JenifferViscarra, depending on the results of a run-off election scheduled for Dec. 7.Commission Seat 2 (vacated by GerryGoodman due to term limits) will be filledby Jeanette Gatto as of Dec. 2.

The latest national unemployment num-bers show that claims for new benefits aredropping for the third week in a row.

In a recent week, 434,000 people filed newunemployment claims and that’s down byabout 21,000 people from the previous week.Long-term unemployment also is down by122,000 people nationwide, although 4.36million former workers still are collectingextended benefits. Locally, there are definitesigns of a slowly improving job market.

So, where are the new jobs coming from?According to state figures from the Agencyfor Workforce Innovation, the top growingfields are education and health with 39,200new jobs, professional services with 15,400positions and trade-related fields with 13,600new jobs.

Full-time hiring is picking up again slowlyin some specialized fields like healthcare andprofessional services, but “Help Wanted”signs for permanent positions are expected toremain scarce through at least the first half ofnext year according to some national laboranalysts.

LOCAL CRUISE BUSINESS BOOMINGThe U.S. economy may be struggling

through an anemic economic recovery, butSouth Florida’s cruise lines are reportingsolid third quarter profits and it’s shaping upto be a record-breaking year for the Port ofMiami.

Deep discounts, solid bookings, stabilizing

fuel prices and reduced operating expensesare paying off with dramatic profits, accord-ing to the latest earning reports out of SouthFlorida’s cruise lines.

Royal Caribbean just announced a 55 per-cent gain in its third quarter earnings, NCL isup over 21 percent and Carnival is reportingprofits improving 22 percent over earlier inthe year. Those profits are being driven by arecord number of passengers who decidethat, despite our lagging recovery, cruisesremain a good deal, providing travel, housingand meals under one roof.

This past fiscal year, the Port of Miamialone saw more than 4.1 million passengerstravel through it. That is up about 35,000from the previous year and a new “WorldCruise Record” according to port officials.

So what’s the downside? As demand risesfor limited space, prices are starting to climbtoo. It’s the simple law of supply anddemand. But that’s precisely why the indus-try is seeing such good earnings, and goodearnings for local cruise lines and cargo oper-ators are good for South Florida because ofthe revenues the industries generate and allthe jobs they support.

Improving business at the Port of Miamialone is forecast possibly to generate another33,000 new jobs in 2014 once the port’s mainchannel is dredged and expanded. It lookslike the local cruise business is headingtowards making 2010 a record breaker, witheven more ships coming here over the nextfew years and forecasts for even more cargoand more passengers.

What makes it even more remarkable isthat this all comes as the U.S. economy stillstruggles to see more gains from an overallstalled recovery.

Too often we thought-lessly think ofThanksgiving Day as aday of leisure. Do we nothave much more to bethankful for than thePilgrims who were look-

ing for a New World and new freedom? They found it on our shores, and they gavethanks to God for their survival.

Besides continually reaping our yearlygains, we have been reaping the fruits ofthe labor of the men and women of the pastcenturies. “You might ask, “What havethey done?” Our land has been cleared andfarms built up. Machinery has been invent-ed and our land is beautiful and sanitary. An educational system has been estab-lished. Our land is full of universities andcolleges where we learn and profit by thetruths which others have tough out for us.

We have freedom of religion.Think of the lives of the great religious

leaders of the past. Can we not say thatour heritage has indeed been a rich one? Most of us live a life far removed fromreal want. Few of us daily encountermuggers, miss a meal out of necessity orhave the greedy and corrupt snatch oursavings from us.

Certainly, most of us can be thankful forthe necessities of life…Health…Freedom…Time, to enjoy our loved oneson a fall day.

Thanksgiving is our nation’s family day, possibly more so than any other day in theyear. It is a day when we are reminded that“no man liveth unto himself” It matter notwhat our station in life may be; what ourprosperity or adversity; this day empha-sizes our mutual independence and ourresponsibility one to another.

Doubtless there are many peoplethroughout the country today called cynicswho, in their distress and privations, feel

that a day of thanksgiving has no adequateplace in their life. It is easy to be thankfulwhere every condition favors us, where thenecessities of life are abundantly suppliedand health dwells at our fireside! To use thelanguage of an American Poet: “Tis easyenough to be pleasant when life flowsalong like a song.”

Thanksgiving Day affords our citizensthe opportunity of making a mental auditof their assets and liabilities, both spiritualand material.

This festival is America’s only religiousfeast. Its character is fundamentally social, fraternal, and inspirational. The memory ofit, when it has passed, should help theNation look forward to even a happierThanksgiving next year. Thanksgiving Dayis not merely a time for an extra dinner, neither is it a time to do all the thanking forthe 365 days of the year. It is the day toremind us to say, “thank you” a little moreoften to God and to men.

If we can’t be thankful for what we have,

we can be thankful for what we don’t have,Disease and Isolation.

In 1864, in the midst of the CivilWar, Abraham Lincoln asked the peo-ple of the United States to meet in theirplaces of worship and give thanks toalmighty God for the blessing theyenjoyed. This proclamation marked thebeginning of the Nations annual obser-vance of Thanksgiving Day. SinceLincoln’s assassination, each Presidentwas induced to issue proclamationscalling upon the people to observe thelast Thursday in November as a specialday for giving thanks, andThanksgiving Day is now a nationalholiday.

SUCCESS – How doyou spell success? AtSunny Isles BeachCommunity Schoolsuccess is spelled withan “A”. For two con-secutive years SIBCShas earned an “A”

grade from the State of Florida. This isbased on student achievement on theFCAT test but is really a reflection of theexcellent teaching at SIBCS. The out-standing faculty works diligently everyday to ensure that students master skills inall areas of the curriculum. SIBCS is asuccess story.

At SIBCS, success is spelled with two“cees” – one for community and one forcommunication. The City of Sunny IslesBeach extended a warm welcome to theschool, its parents and staff, and continuesto embrace our goals and mission. Theresources and friendship of the communi-ty have been available to the school in allour endeavors. C is also for communica-tion and we pride ourselves on our effortsto communicate with parents and the com-munity. Have you visited our newlyupdated website? Do you read our week-

ly Parent Express? Do you receive ourautomated phone messages? Do youcheck the marquee for the latest events? We want you to know what is happening atSIBCS and we want your feedback.

At SIBCS, success is spelled with a “u”because we could not accomplish ourgoals without you, the parents, who are thebackbone of our school. Your enormousenergy keeps our calendar filled with funfamily activities, with informative meet-ings, and with fundraising events that ben-efit our children and teachers. You makeSIBCS special in so many ways.

At SIBCS, success is spelled with dollarsigns $ucce$$. Thank you to theEducation Trust which continues to under-write our big ticket items that are not fund-ed by the District. In these difficult finan-cial times, your commitment to our schooltruly makes a difference in each class-room. The Funds purchase of 60 comput-ers last year enables SIBCS to stay in theforefront of technology in the educationalarena.

Yes, SIBCS is a success story, but thatstory has many authors. As I have said sooften, our success is built on teamworkand partnership. We could not do it with-out the “cees” , without the “u” and with-out the $. This Thanksgiving I am thank-ful that you are a part of our success.

The RX luxury crossover vehicle has been

a huge success for Lexus. Introduced in 1998,

the RX is now in its third-generation and sell-

ing at a strong pace.

The RX 350 was reintroduced as an all-new

model for the 2010 model year and 2011

brings only a few changes, including the new

Smart Stop Technology and a several color

changes.

• Smart Stop Technology — a braking sys-

tem enhancement that automatically reduces

engine power when the brake pedal and accel-

erator pedal are applied simultaneously under

certain driving conditions.

• Color Changes — New exterior colors are

Satin Cashmere Mica (replaces Golden

Almond Metallic) and Stargazer Black;

Truffle Mica and Black Sapphire Pearl have

been discontinued.

The Lexus RX is a good looking vehicle,

with a sleek profile accentuated by pro-

nounced front fenders that flow into the doors

and rear fender flares that sweep around to pull

the corners together. A rear spoiler helps aero-

dynamically and conceals the rear wiper and

houses the AM/FM radio antenna and high-

mount stoplight. Up front, the grille is situated

lower than the headlights (standard halogen or

optional HID) and the lower edges of the grille

form a unique arrowhead design.

Under the hood, the Lexus RX 350 is pow-

ered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a six-

speed Multi-Mode Automatic Transmission

and makes 275 hp at 6,200 rpm. Intake and

exhaust manifolds have been tuned for better

performance and fuel economy. Lexus also

maximized the torque output to better meet the

needs of luxury crossover drivers, with 90 per-

cent or more of the peak torque available from

2,300 to 6,100 rpm, where torque is most uti-

lized. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelli-

gence (VVT-i) is used to control both intake

and exhaust camshafts independently, optimiz-

ing engine performance at all speeds and loads.

The six-speed automatic transmission has a

quick-shifting response with help from minia-

ture high-flow linear solenoids that control

transmission-fluid line-pressure. The torque

converter uses a low-speed lockup damper to

enable lock-up from second to sixth gear and

improve fuel economy.

When applying the accelerator pedal rapidly

during kick-down, the direct-downshift control

allows the transmission to directly shift from

sixth to third or fifth to second, skipping the

intermediate gears to get the quickest response.

With the Multi-Mode Automatic Transmission,

the driver can shift manually by moving the

gated shift lever to the “S” slot, then pushing it

forward to up shift and backward to downshift.

Lexus offers the RX 350 with a choice

between front-wheel drive (FWD) and an

electronically controlled Active Torque

Control all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

Pricing on the 2011 Lexus RX 350 starts at

$37,975.
