Got a call from a good friend.“Guess what, we’ve finally come to an

agreement. We compromised on the lastitem.”

The ex-wife had bought hismother a $20 gift a week beforethe breakup and in the finalmeeting with the attorneys, shehad insisted that he pay the $20because she had bought some-thing for his relative. Forget thedivision of the house or otheritems, she wanted the moneybecause she had bought some-thing for his relative.

Two hours of arguments. With attor-neys present (how much was their bill?)and finally they split the difference andhe ok’ed the difference for $10.

You know it is amazing that whatstarts out as a simple divorce becomes amadhouse when an issue somehingminor becomes a big issue.

Really one wonders how these twoever got married. Probably what startedout as true love and now they were com-batants who also happened to know

which buttons to push toannoy the other and cause sit-uations that no civilized rulescan handle.

Many times the only finalanswer is one party movingfar away from the other.

You know a divorce is neverfinal. There’s always some lit-tle or big item that stops

divorces from disappearing completely. It really is amazing that considering

all the headaches that go into divorcesthat so many people actually think ofmarrying again.

We just seem to keep on trying andhoping that the next one will be that per-fect ending. Maybe there is someone outthere who is, perhaps, almost perfect.

With Thanksgiving justaround the corner, every-one’s thinking about eatingturkey and watching foot-ball - but what aboutreflecting upon the pletho-ra of things city residents

are thankful for? Here are just some of theassets enticing people from all over theworld to make a “pilgrimage” to SunnyIsles Beach….

THANKS FOR THE IMPROVEMENTS: The city’s budget includes funding for

ongoing capital improvements, new parksplus many more great municipalassets…In fact, the list of improvements isso long, even Santa may not be able tomatch all the “gifts that will keep on giv-ing” for many years to come.

THANKS FOR THE GREAT SCHOOL: Parents and kids are still celebrating the

A grades earned by the Norman S. EdelcupSunny Isles Beach School….Rumor has it,a “customized” curriculum may soon beintroduced featuring classes like “Tanning101”; “Condo Board Meeting Etiquette”;and a class that should be mandatory forsuch a diverse community: “InternationalRelations.”

THANKS FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY: The city is always stepping up efforts to

keep Sunny Isles Beach streets safe – butever wonder if it would just be easier tomake it mandatory for every citizen to ridethe city’s shuttle bus (now connecting with

Surfside shuttles so you can ride all theway to South Beach!) This could result ina lot less traffic and instead of paying forexpensive gas, you could buy an even big-ger turkey for Thanksgiving dinner – orbetter yet – have it gourmet catered fromthe Epicure market!!

THANKS FOR ALL THE FUN: Concerts, movie nights, trips, sports

programs and special holiday events arealways being planned by the city’sCultural and Human Services Departmentthat has inadvertently tapped into thesecret to world peace: Parties like therecent “Booogie by the Beach” promotingunity with an unbeatable weapon: Freefood!

THANKS FOR THE TECHNOLOGY: Now that parks in Sunny Isles Beach

have wireless Internet access, it’s easierthan ever to log on to the city’s high-techwebsite (sibfl.net) and keep up to date onimportant city news, meetings and specialevents. You can find just about everythingyou’re looking for – except a greatdate…so if you’re single, you may want toemail a suggestion that the city add a linklike “Sunny Perfect Match.com”

THANKS FOR THE PROGRESS: Overall, residents agree they enjoy life

in the city known as “Florida’s Riviera”where luxury now reigns supreme. Sowhen you’re stuffed from all the turkeyand it’s the fourth quarter, just look outsideyour window and join in reciting this apro-pos mantra: Every day is ThanksgivingDay in Sunny Isles Beach!

An echo is a reflection of sound waves. It is the repetition of sounds or spokenwords. You speak or make a sound andyour words or sounds come back to you.You cannot shout out one thing and have adifferent thing return to you. It will returnexactly as you say it. So, be careful whatyou say. Think before you speak. Am echo is also a reflection of what youare thinking and feeling.

The Universe is a reflective mirror ofyour innermost thoughts, feelings andactions. What you send out into the worldreturns to you. Like begets Like. If youspeak ill of someone, that will come back toyou. If you even think ill of someone thatwill come back to you from others. If youare thinking fearful, angry and unhappythoughts you will have fearful, angry andunhappy thoughts that will echo back toyou. If you send out love and good deeds

that is what will return to you. If you wantgood things to come to you, then you mustsend out good things.

Send out love, peace, patience, for-giveness, hope, kindness, understandingand joy. Send out positive affirmations. Those thoughts, statements and affirma-tions will reinforce your statements andgive them more power when they comeback to you. They will be magnified andintensified.

You can also be an echo for the words, thoughts and beliefs of other people. Youcan imitate them and you can reflect theiropinions or actions instead of your own.So, again be careful who and what youendorse.

Listen to your echo and it will tell youexactly what you think and feel about your-self and others. The echo confirms yourbeliefs. If negative things are coming toyou realize that you have the power tochange them quickly into positives. If youare not receiving what you want from theUniverse try sending out that which youwant to receive.

The top 1% own most of the wealth ofthe nation, a staggering recession with mil-lions of people unemployed, an Anti-WallStreet protest leading to a semi-organizedgroup who successfully help oust theRepublicans from Congress and theDemocrats then introduce a 2% income tax onthe wealthy, over Republican opposition.Sound familiar? Sorry, it was the era of the1890’s

Out of the financial distress, includingfalling farm prices, came a tornado of Anti-Wall Street protesters; the People’s Party, known as Populists. They believed that organ-ized wealth was “sucking the country dry withmonopolistic prices, extortion rates and tar-iffs.” In the 1890 elections, the Republicans(party of big business) were swept out ofpower. The new House had 235 Democratsand 88 Republicans. In June 1894, theCongressional Democrats enacted a 2%income tax on the wealthy. Missouri

Democratic Congressman David Armondstated, “The passage of the bill will mark thedawn of a brighter day, the laughter of wellfed children …God hastened the era of equal-ity in taxation and opportunity!” TheRepublican spokesmen “went into a virtualpanic,” despite their having previouslyimposed a higher federal income tax duringthe Civil War that the Supreme Court hadruled was constitutional. Senior RepublicanSenator Sherman stated, “The income tax wassocialism, communism and devilism.” TheDean of the New York Bar argued before theU.S. Supreme Court that the income tax was“a communist march on private property.”

The decision came down on May 20,1895. The Court “reversed itself and voted, five to four, that the Democratic income taxwas unconstitutional.” The same day, minori-ty Justice John Harlan denounced the decisionas a “monstrous, wicked injustice to the manyfor the benefit of the favored few.” SeniorJustice Stephen J. Field wrote the strongestopinion against the income tax, stating, “Itwas an assault upon capital,” and the begin-ning of “a war of the poor against the rich.”The issue was resolved when the 16thAmendment to the U.S. Constitution was rat-ified on February 13, 1913, which broadenedthe right of Congress to levy an income tax.

of family fun. Teachers, parents, and studentsrooted for their teams to score and make agreat play.

I mention this because I want everyone toknow that the NSE/SIB K-8 staff membersare super stars both in the classroom and inthe community. Our outstanding facultydevotes numerous hours to before and afterschool academic activities to support our stu-dents. Some teachers arrive early to provideindividual attention for struggling studentsand others arrive early to open the school’scomputer labs so children can work on onlineprograms. NSE/SIB also supports an exten-sive three day a week after school tutorialprogram for students in grades 3 through 8who need some extra assistance in readingand math. In January, the program will beexpanded to include 2nd grade students.

In addition, our science teachers have beenoffering Science Fair Project Boot Campsthat help students prepare their projects forthe annual science fair later this month. Ouryoung scientists can also be found conduct-ing experiments during SECME meetings. And let’s not forget our talented artists whomeet each week to broaden their skills andcreate banners and decorations for our spe-cial assemblies. Finally, our teachers are

preparing the next generation of educators bysponsoring Future Educator Clubs. TheNSE/SIB teachers are going above andbeyond to ensure that our students haveevery opportunity to grow, learn, and suc-ceed.

I cannot close this article about our superstar staff without sharing a word or two abouttheir generosity. Throughout the year theteachers participate in many charitableevents including the Walk for the Cure andthe Mercedes Benz Walk, holiday food andtoy drives, and donations for people in need.In addition, NSE/SIB has won numerousrecognitions for its overwhelming contribu-tions to the United Way Student Campaignand the Staff Campaign.

At NSE/SIB, there is already a solid tradi-tion of giving back to the community andhelping others. The teachers and staff mem-bers are modeling behaviors they would likethe children to replicate as they move for-ward and become community leaders. Whenstudents are engaged in the community, classroom lessons have a stronger, moremeaningful impact on their learning.Together, the staff and students are building acaring, giving tomorrow for all of us. I could-n’t be prouder of the NSE/SIB K-8 family.

incorporation, known as “Concerned Citizensof Northeast Dade” were led by civic activistsincluding the late Mayor David Samson.Brave and persistent, they made a pilgrimagedowntown and secured support from a strongally - Sen. Gwen Margolis.

After freedom fighters formed a CharterCommission and drafted a Charter there was alandslide vote in favor of incorporation and theCity of Sunny Isles Beach was officially born. But this was just the start of greater things tocome. In 1997, newly elected members of theCity Commission began the challenging taskof transforming a declining tourist destinationinto a vibrant, progressive city.

‘NEW WORLD OF DIFFERENCE’One of the first promises kept by the City

Commission was the formation of a first-class Police Department. Thanks to a tribe of“best in blue” officers now led by wise ChiefFred Maas, criminals behaving like wildIndians no longer posed a great threat topeace and security; state-of-the-art patrol carscould ride like the wind to respond to calls;and a philosophy of community policing pre-vailed.

With motorcycles, all terrain vehicles, jetskis and boats, vigilant patrols were alwayslooking out for the welfare of citizens.Positive changes were happening fast…theonly thing slowing down was traffic on

Collins Avenue and around interior neighbor-hoods welcoming reduced speed limits.

From the startup of a convenient shuttlebus service - to the creation of a Cultural andHuman Services Department planning trips, concerts and special events for the wholecommunity to enjoy, the wheels of progresscontinued to turn.

Like emerging colonies, distinct citydepartments were also established – eachwith a proactive mission based on promotingthe highest quality of life, working in con-junction with the City Manager. Public Worksstarted cleaning up the streets and removingovergrown brush. Code Enforcement encour-aged citizens to be law abiding and promotean upscale image.

The Building Department recruited a teamof expert officials and inspectors. The FinanceDepartment helped draft feasible budgets;highly qualified zoning and community devel-opment experts were charged with promotingoptimal development. An AdministrativeServices Department was created to keepthings running smoothly. And a Cultural andHuman Services was established to planenriching, entertaining “community unity”events for residents of all ages to enjoy.

‘PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE’Pioneers of progress were called into action

once again when a Citizens’ Planning AdvisoryCommittee was formed to help draft aComprehensive Plan shaping the future of devel-opment in Sunny Isles Beach. Working late into

the night in Commission chambers (formerlylocated in an RK Shopping Center), residents, business and community leaders discussed piv-otal issues such as beach access and zoning codesdesigned to foster optimal development alongCollins Avenue and Sunny Isles Boulevard.

Soon, old rundown motels along the eastside of Collins Avenue started to disappearand multi-million dollar developments beganto rise. Relics of the past like Colonial Innwere replaced with the futuristic Pinnacle byJ. Milton & Associates, The Related Group’sOcean One…Two…Three, etc. And soonafter, international publications announcedthe triumphant news that Donald J. Trump, the Trumps of Williams Island, TurnberryAssociates and other world-famous develop-ers such as Fortune International were land-ing on Sunny Isles Beach.

As property values continued to climb, taxes stayed low - but adhering to the motto“good isn’t good enough,” the CityCommission voted to embark on anotherambitious initiative supporting the goal tomake Sunny Isles Beach “Florida’s Riviera.”

‘SWEEPING CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS’While residents of Golden Shores were

cheering a much needed stormwater drainageand street paving project, pow wows werebeing held and the City Commission ulti-mately voted for a “feast your eyes on this”comprehensive capital improvement planbenefiting the entire city.

Primarily targeting beautification, park

development, a streetscape plan, future proper-ty acquisitions and road resurfacing, the capi-tal improvements would promote the highestquality of life - yet Sunny Isles Beach wouldstill maintain one of the lowest property taxrates in Miami-Dade County.

In keeping with the pioneer spirit, a Mayor’sAdvisory Council was also formed so residentscould provide input to the City Commissionwhile volunteering to serve on committeesrelating to public good and welfare.

Accomplishing even more visionary proj-ects, a gala groundbreaking ceremony at theTony Roma’s site marked the beginning of con-struction for the magnificent new GovernmentCenter now gracing Collins Avenue.

As the city welcomed more and moreSunny Isles Beach settlers including manyfamilies with children, the Commission real-ized the need for city parks and a school.Continued efforts to acquire land and grantfunds helped make the dream come tofruition as park dedications ensued and aschool, recently christened the Norman S.Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8, first openedin the fall of 2008.

MUCH MORE TO BE THANKFUL FOR In 1676, the town council of Charlestown,

Massachusetts officially declared a day ofThanksgiving and now in 2011 and beyond, the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission haspledged to continue forging ahead with pro-gressive initiatives residents and visitors aresure to be especially thankful for.

THANKSGIVING, from page 1 ––––––––

It’s nice to see that Ford has finally comearound and is offering American consumerssomething more than gas-guzzling SUVsand monster pickup trucks.

I refer specifically to the all-new FordFocus, a small car with a wonderfully freshdesign, high levels of craftsmanship andoccupant safety, an exceptional array ofsmart new technologies, and an EPA-rated40 mpg on the highway. On top of all that,Focus delivers solid handling and an over-all excellent driving experience.

Focus is powered by a new 2.0-liter DOHCfour-cylinder engine that combines high-pres-sure gasoline direct injection and twin inde-pendent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT)for enhanced performance and fuel efficiency. How about 20 horsepower more than the pre-vious Focus engine and a fuel economyimprovement of more than 10 percent?

The new engine is mated to the latest six-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmis-

sion with a high-efficiency dual dry-clutchdesign. The advanced transmission also isoffered with SelectShift Automatic thatallows you to shift gears manually. A five-speed manual transmission is available.

With a sleek and sporty design, Focus isavailable in hatchback and sedan models —S, SE, SEL and Titanium trim levels. Thefour-door sedan and five-door hatchbackmodels mark the next step of Ford’s kinet-ic design form, and more than 10 millionunits have been sold worldwide sinceFocus was launched in 1998.

Focus has a striking front end dominatedby a wide-mouth grille and slanted insetheadlights. A sleek profile and a dramaticrising beltline emphasize the athletic stance. The stylish exterior is matched by a modern,cockpit-style interior with a stylish centerconsole. Bold graphics, a sculptured soft-touch instrument panel and quality trimmaterials give the interior a premium look.

Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)levels have been reduced and drivingdynamics improved by the increased stiff-ness of the body structure, one with 30 per-cent greater rigidity than the previousFocus. Also, there’s a new windshield witha special acoustic layer that significantlyreduces wind and road noise. The wind-

shield is complemented by increased sideand rear glass thickness for extra quietness.

The screens can be personalized to dis-play information relevant to each driverusing a simple button click, voice com-mand or touch screen tap.

MyFord Touch is powered by a new gen-eration of the company’s popular SYNCsystem, which includes a sophisticatedvoice control system for vehicle functions, connected Bluetooth devices, a Wi-Fi

hotspot, MP3 players and a varietexternal media.

BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN City Historian

Too often we thoughtless-ly think of ThanksgivingDay as a day of leisure. Dowe not have much more tobe thankful for than thePilgrims who were lookingfor a New World and new

freedom? They found it on our shores, andthey gave thanks to God for their survival.

Besides continually reaping our yearlygains, we have been reaping the fruits of thelabor of the men and women of the past cen-turies. “You might ask, “What have theydone?” Our land has been cleared and farmsbuilt up. Machinery has been invented andour land is beautiful and sanitary. An educa-tional system has been established. Our landis full of universities and colleges where welearn and profit by the truths which othershave fought out for us. We have freedom ofreligion.

Think of the lives of the great religiousleaders of the past. Can we not say that ourheritage has indeed been a rich one? Most ofus live a life far removed from real want.Few of us daily encounter muggers, miss ameal out of necessity or have the greedy andcorrupt snatch our savings from us.Certainly, most of us can be thankful for thenecessities of life… Health… Freedom…Time, to enjoy our loved ones on a fall day.

Thanksgiving is our nation’s family day, possibly more so than any other day in theyear. It is a day when we are reminded that“no man liveth unto himself” It matter notwhat our station in life may be; what ourprosperity or adversity; this day emphasizes

our mutual independence and our responsi-bility one to another.

Doubtless there are many people through-out the country today called cynics who, intheir distress and privations, feel that a day ofthanksgiving has no adequate place in theirlife. It is easy to be thankful where everycondition favors us, where the necessities oflife are abundantly supplied and healthdwells at our fireside! To use the language ofan American Poet: “Tis easy enough to bepleasant when life flows along like a song.”

Thanksgiving Day affords our citizens theopportunity of making a mental audit of theirassets and liabilities, both spiritual and material.

This festival is America’s only religiousfeast. Its character is fundamentally social, fraternal, and inspirational. The memory ofit, when it has passed, should help the Nationlook forward to even a happier Thanksgivingnext year. Thanksgiving Day is not merely atime for an extra dinner, neither is it a time todo all the thanking for the 365 days of theyear. It is the day to remind us to say, “thankyou” a little more often to God and to men.

In 1864, in the midst of the Civil War,Abraham Lincoln asked the people of theUnited States to meet in their places of wor-

ship and give thanks to almighty Godfor the blessing they enjoyed. Thisproclamation marked the beginning ofthe Nations annual observance ofThanksgiving Day. Since Lincoln’sassassination, each President wasinduced to issue proclamations callingupon the people to observe the lastThursday in November as a specialday for giving thanks, andThanksgiving Day is now a nationalholiday.
