1 Notes on this Guide1.1 Area of ValidityThis guide describes the installation of Sunny Central and additional project-related components in a Sunny Central MV (Medium Voltage) station for connection to a medium-voltage grid.

1.2 Target GroupThe guide is intended for the station supplier commissioned with constructing the MV station.

1.3 Additional InformationAll guide for the Sunny Central MV station as well as for the installed components must be stored together with the system documentation and must be accessible at all times. 2 Safety2.1 Appropriate UsageThe MV station is a PV inverter. It allows photovoltaic solar energy from solar modules to be converted and fed into a medium-voltage grid.

2.2 Safety InstructionsFailures that affect or limit the safety of the device must be rectified immediately. Unauthorized modifications and the use of spare parts not recommended by SMA Solar Technology may cause fire, material damage and electrical shock. Unauthorized personnel must not have access to the devices.Warning signs must always be clearly readable and immediately replaced if damaged.

2.2.1 PersonnelOnly qualified technical personnel may perform work on the MV station. "Qualified" means that the personnel must possess training relevant to the activity performed and must be familiar with the content of this guide.

2.2.2 InstallationThe requirements for the installation site, which are described in the Sunny Central installation requirements and in the MV station transportation and installation requirements, must be observed.

2.2.3 Electrical ConnectionThe electrical connection must be performed according to this installation guide, the variant circuit diagram and the technical data of the device.Ensure the grid connection cable for grid feeding is fused at the nominal current indicated on the type plate. If the specified nominal current differs from the nominal current of the fuse plug, the fuse plug having the next highest nominal current may be used.

Lightning protectionThe devices have internal overvoltage protection on the AC and DC sides. However, the desired protection level can only be achieved if a lightning protection area concept exists for the installation building as per DIN VDE 0185-4, i.e. lightning conductors or combined surge and lightning conductors (not included in scope of delivery) are available at, among other locations, the building’s entrance (transfer lightning protection area LPZ 1).Combined overvoltage and lightning protection for the signal inputs can be optionally ordered.Emergency StopIn systems having more than one device, the respective emergency stop switches must be connected together as described in this installation guide. The emergency stop circuit may only be supplied with voltage from a single device.

Grid connection cableThe grid connection cable for the internal power supply must be secured with the line circuit breaker specified in the technical data. SMA Solar Technology recommends to use thermal fuses for this purpose.

Emergency Stop Circuit• The emergency stop circuit may only be supplied by a Sunny Central.• Ensure correct mounting of the jumpers on the emergency stop terminal strip of the

device. Please refer to the circuit diagram for detailed information.

3 The Sunny Central MV StationA MV station is generally a concrete substation with two chambers. One chamber contains the inverters, the station sub-distribution, and the communication technology. The other chamber contains the medium-voltage transformer, the medium-voltage switchgear, and the internal power supply.A medium-voltage connection can consist of 1 or 2 central inverters, a COM-B as communication connection, a station sub-division (STSD), a medium-voltage transformer, a medium-voltage switchgear, and an internal power supply comprised of a switch disconnector with a fuse and an internal power supply transformer.The figure below depicts a fully-equipped station and its components. The exact assembly and components of an MV station depend on the project.

The following MV stations are equipped with one Sunny Central:• SC 400MV• SC 500MV• SC 630MV

The following MV stations are equipped with two Sunny Centrals:• SC 800MV• SC 1000MV• SC 1250MV

For exact delivery scope of the Sunny Central, COM-B, the external sensors and the other components, refer to the corresponding installation guide.

4.2 Identifying the Delivery ComponentsThe individual components in the delivery can be identified by the type plates of the individual devices. The location of the type plates can be found in the project documentation.

4.3 Checking for Transport DamageCheck the packaging and the devices for any damage and compare the scope of delivery with the delivery documentation. In the case of damage to the devices and/or unclear delivery contents, immediately contact the SMA Solar Technology project manager.

4.4 StorageThe instructions for storage listed in the product documentation must be observed.

4.5 Assembling an MV StationThe HE series Sunny Central units are normally set up in a concrete substation, opposite to each other as a “left-hand system” and a “right-hand system”. The installation has to be carried out in accordance with the VDE guidelines for a closed electrical operating room. The figure below depicts a left-hand and a right-hand system.

The AC cabinet should always stand next to the partition wall to the transformer room so that the AC power cables can be connected to the transformer via the shortest possible route.

We recommend the installation of a smoke detector inside the operating room which controls the external emergency stop connection of the device and which switches off the Sunny Central in the event of smoke.

The figure above shows the inverter installed as a “right-hand system”, while the figure below depicts a “left-hand system”. A station may also include only one Sunny Central. 5 InstallationThe Sunny Central devices must be fixed to the floor and the rear wall of a station. This will prevent the Sunny Central from tipping over when the station is transported.

5.1 Preparation of the Mounting Surface

5.1.1 Preparation of Sunny Central fixingThe Sunny Central must be fixed to the floor of the station. The station floor is laid out by the station construction staff. The floor can be poured concrete or steel struts. SMA Solar Technology recommends a steel strut floor. Coverings on the steel struts make it easier to access the cable chamber and install the inverter and the remaining devices in the station. The figure below depicts the concrete substation floor layout recommended by SMA Solar Technology.

5.1.2 Prepare Cable EntryThe figure below depicts a top view of the Sunny Central floor group with the DC cabinet on the left and the AC cabinet on the right. The mounting conditions for Sunny Central contain additional information regarding the position of the components in Sunny Central and the appropriate cable entry.

Prepare DC cable entryThe DC cable is inserted into the Sunny Central DC cabinet through the cable vault by the end customer at the mounting site. When using a concrete floor in the DC cabinet, include openings for the cables.Prepare the grounding cabling entryThe grounding cabling is inserted into the Sunny Central DC cabinet through the cable vault by the end customer at the mounting site. When using a concrete floor in the Sunny Central, include openings for the cables.Inserting the communication cabling and the internal power supplyThe communication cabling and the internal power supply are inserted into the Sunny Central AC cabinet through the cable vault. 5.2 Preparing the Rear Wall

5.2.1 Preparation of Sunny Central fixingThe Sunny Central must be fixed to the wall of the station.

The figure below is a schematic representation of the station and the mounting points on the station wall and floor.

5.2.2 Prepare the Air OutletThe air scoops are mounted on the Sunny Central; see 5.3.3 ”Mount Air Scoops” (page 24). After mounting the Sunny Central in the station, fit the air scoops to the air outlets.Alternatively, some air scoop parts can be mounted on the concrete substation before the Sunny Central is installed; see ”Mount the air baffle on the concrete substation” (page 21).The figure below is a schematic representation of the station and the air outlets for a Sunny Central.

Mount the air baffle on the concrete substationThe air baffle allows the air to escape.1. Mount the angular sheet on the seal at the bottom edge of the ventilation grid.

The angular sheet is not included in the delivery.2. Mount the seal on the free side of the angular sheet.

Switch cabinet air outletsThe precise dimensions of the air outlets for the individual Sunny Central switch cabinets can be derived from the size and position of the fans and their pressure reserves in the Sunny Central mounting instructions.

5.3.1 Fasten the Sunny Central to the FloorThe figure below is a schematic representation of a Sunny Central installation.

5.3.3 Mount Air ScoopsFasten the air scoops to the prepared points on the roof of the Sunny Central.The figure below is a schematic representation of the installation of the air scoops on a Sunny Central.

1. Mount the seal between the Sunny Central and the air scoop. The seal is not included in the delivery

2. Mount the scoops on the Sunny Central.

NOTICE!Damage to the device due to short circuits.

Do not drill into the switch cabinets. Waste material can cause short circuits.Remove waste materials from the cabinet.

3. Fasten the air scoops to the Sunny Central using the roof screws and washers. The washers are not included in the delivery.

4. Make sure that the device is securely in place.5. Check the seals on the air scoops.6. If necessary, seal any air gaps with sealing compound.☑ The air scoops are mounted.

Notice!Device damage due to improper mounting of the air scoops on the AC cabinet.

• The air scoop should only be fastened to the side of the switch cabinet that borders the side wall of the inverter cabinet.

6.1 Connect Sunny Central to the Medium-Voltage TransformerThe Sunny Central has various connection options on the AC side. Depending on the project, the Sunny Central AC output needs to be adapted to the MV station requirements.

DANGER!There are lethal voltages at the connections when the system is in operation.

Make sure the connections are safe to touch.• The connections to the medium-voltage transformer should be fully enclosed.• The connections to Sunny Central should be protected from unintended contact with
