Introduction The Sunflower Baby Blanket is the second in my series of seasonal blankets.

I designed this blanket for one of my (9!) nephews. Henry is just one year old and has a sunny

personality and dimples that would make anyone smile.

So this blanket was designed to embody Henry’s bubbly and cheeky personality. With so many

nephews (and only one niece) I also tend to make a lot of unisex items. So unlike the Spring

Fields Baby Blanket, this is a unisex colourway and design.

I designed this pattern for Rico Creative Cotton and Caron Cakes. You can use cotton for a

lighter summer blanket, but you will have to manage the colour change. If you don’t want to do

that, you can also try the newly released Caron Cotton Cakes (which unfortunately weren’t yet

available when I was designing this pattern). If you will be using this blanket all year round, the

warmer wool blend of Caron Cakes is another great option.

I would like to thank my AMAZING testers for this pattern: Zahra (@tinyanaesthetist), Maggie

(@tossedwave) and Tamika (@precious_hearts_handcrafts). You are all fantastic. Check out

their blankets at the end of the eBook, they look absolutely amazing.

Rico Creative Cotton

I used 2x 50g skeins each of these colours:

Light Pistachio {Roots C1}, Light yellow {Petals C2}, Tangerine {Flower Centres C3}, Light blue

{Leaves C4}, Sky blue {Leaves C5}

Caron Cakes

I used 2 cakes of Rainbow Sherbet

I controlled the colourway by separating out the colours before I started to make the blanket.

You can choose to do this, or just go with the colourway. If you separate the colours, I used

them in this order:

Green {Roots C1}, Orange {Petals C2}, Pink {Flower Centres C3}, Light blue { Leaves C4}, Blue

{Leaves C5}

Note on colour choices: When you choose your colours, do keep in mind that the roots will be

made with C1, the flower centres will be made with C3 and the petals will be made with C2

(but you can pick whichever colour you like for the petals as they will be added separately)

Now for the legal stuff: with this pattern you’re more than welcome to make items for small-

scale sale. I only ask that you credit me as the designer. No mass produced items may be made

without my prior permission. This pattern cannot be reproduced or reposted in any way, and

cannot be translated without my consent.

If in any doubt, or you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]

I hope you enjoy making this blanket as much as I enjoyed designing it!

Materials

To make this blanket 80cm W x 90cm L (with a margin of error of 5cm) exactly as shown you

will need the following materials:

• 2x Cakes of Caron Cakes Yarn (Rainbow Sherbet)

o You will be playing yarn chicken at the end with 2 cakes. So if you don’t have

nerves of steel you should either buy an extra 100g (128 meters/140 yards) of

aran yarn for the border, or an additional cake.

Or

• 10x Skeins of Rico Creative Cotton (2x 50g keins each of the following: light pistachio,

light yellow, tangerine, light blue, sky blue)

o You will be playing yarn chicken at the end with 10 skeins. So if you don’t have

nerves of steel you should buy an extra 100g (128 meters/140 yards) of aran

yarn for the border.

• 6mm Crochet Hook (US: J/10, UK and CA: 4)

• 5mm Crochet Hook (US: H/8, UK and CA: 6)

• Yarn Needle

• Blocking Mat

• Blocking Pins

If you wish to use a different type of yarn than what I have used, the specifications are as

follows:

• Aran Yarn (worsted weight, 10 ply, medium 4)

• 400 grams (14.2 oz)

• 700 meters (766 yards)

o C1: 137 meters (150 yards)

o C2: 128 meters (140 yards)

o C3: 146 meters (160 yards)

o C4: 146 meters (160 yards)

o C5: 128 meters (140 yards)

• Cotton or wool blend

As this pattern is for a baby blanket, I would recommend purchasing yarn that can be machine

washed and is designed for heavy use. The last thing new mums want to do is hand-wash

blankets!

Tight Leaves

These leaves are used to finish off stems 3, 5. 7 and 9. After the tight leaves have been made,

the stems will not continue to grow so you won’t need to do FPTRs on these stems any longer.

They follow the same process as Two Leaves, but the leaves are closer together.

Overlay Crochet Round

Overlay crochet is used to secure the sunflower centres to the blanket.

Pick a yarn to use to secure the centre (I’ve shown you what it looks like with the same

coloured yarn, and with contrasting yarn below).

Insert hook through the HDCs of round 3 (big sunflower) or row 2 (droopy sunflower) AND

the stitches in the row directly behind them. Pull up a loop of yarn (2 loops on hook). Pull the

last loop through the first loop to create a SL ST.

Continue in each ST in the round [1] (32 or 16). In the final ST, pull up a loop [2] and the end

of the yarn. Thread the end of the yarn through the loop and tighten. Hook the end back

through the back of the work. Weave in ends.

You can also choose to repeat this in the other rounds of the sunflower centre if you want a

colourful effect.

[3] No overlay crochet, [4] overlay crochet in the same colour, [5] overlay crochet in different

colours

You can also choose to add a running stitch to each petal if you don’t like the fact that they

curl naturally.

Yarn over 3 times. Insert your hook into the first ST. Pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yarn over

and pull through 2 loops [1] (4 loops on hook). Yarn over again and pull through 2 loops (3

loops on hook). Yarn over a final time and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook).

*Yarn over 3 times. Insert your hook into the next ST. Pull up a loop (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 loops on hook). Yarn

over again and pull through 2 loops (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 loops on hook). Yarn over a final time

and pull through 2 loops (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 loops on hook).*

Repeat from *-* 6 more times [2-3] (7 in total)

Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops on hook. CH 1 to close.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shallow BPHDC

This stitch is basically the same as a BPHDC. The only difference is instead of inserting your

hook around the post, you insert your hook around the stitch. See more information here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Standing ST

This stitch is what is used when changing colours, or when joining the yarn again after the

sunflower centres. You can find a good tutorial on how to do a Standing HDC here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instructions READ BEFORE STARTING:

• Grey row = front side of work

• White row = back side of work

• Colours in {curly brackets} refer to recommended colour changes. When changing colours, I use a standing HDC instead of a starting chain.

• Numbers in [square brackets] within the text refer to the image it corresponds to

• The turning chain at the end of each row does not count as a stitch

• When working in BLO or FLO – this is the front or back loop as seen from whichever side you’re working on, NOT the FLO or BLO or the “right” side of the work

• Except when making leaves or flowers, there should be 7 HDCs between each of the FPTR stems. This will change to 15, and eventually 23 as the blanket grows. On each end there should be 4 HDCs. I would recommend counting at the end of each row.

• If you have a greater or smaller number of stitches, there are the following options:

o Undo (frog) your work until you find the mistake. This is recommended if you have more than 1 or 2 extra/fewer STs OR the stems have started to bend.

o If you have only added 1 or 2 extra stitches, HDC2TOG in the STs between the stems that contain the mistake (this will stop the stems from bending)

o If you are missing 1 or 2 extra stitches, 2 HDC in a ST between the stems until you have the right number of STs between each stem (this will stop the stems from bending)

It may be helpful to use stitch markers to mark the stems that will contain flowers/leaves.

These are stems 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

Finish off and cut yarn leaving an end long enough to weave in.

Now we will work in the row again. Skip the ST after the ST your centre was created in. Join your yarn to the next ST using a standing HDC. HDC in next 13 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 72. Skip next ST, HDC in next 23 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 72. Skip next ST, HDC in next 4 STs. CH 2, turn. (1x Centre, 4 FPTR, 82 HDC)

Row 78 SUNFLOWER (Stem 6) In this row we will secure the sunflower centre. HDC in first 44 STs. FPHDC around 6th HDC in round 3 of the centre (if you can’t figure out which is the 6th ST, just FPHDC around the ST that is most in the centre. This is just to secure the centre and has very little impact on the design). Skip next ST. HDC in remaining 44 STs. CH 2, turn. (89) Now we will use overlay crochet to secure the centre to the blanket.

Row 79 {C4} HDC in first 4 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 77. Skip next ST, HDC in

next 23 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 77. Skip next ST, HDC in next 31 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 77. Skip next ST, HDC in next 23 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 75. Skip next ST, HDC in remaining 4 STs. CH 2, turn. (85 HDC, 4 FPTR)

Row 80 HDC in each ST across. CH 2, turn. (89) Row 81-

84 Repeat rows 79-80 twice After row 84, make the 36 sunflower petals They will naturally curl when you make them (see below) so you will need to pin the petals down when blocking to keep them straight.

Row 85 {C5} HDC in first 4 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 83. Skip next ST, HDC in

next 23 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 83. Skip next ST, HDC in next 31 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 83. Skip next ST, HDC in next 23 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 83. Skip next ST, HDC in remaining 4 STs. CH 2, turn. (85 HDC, 4 FPTR)

Row 86 HDC in each ST across. CH 2, turn. (89) Row 87 BEE

In this row we will create the bee HDC in first 4 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 85. Skip next ST, HDC in next 11 STs. CH 1. Skip next ST. HDC in next 11 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 85. Skip next ST, HDC in next 31 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 85. Skip next ST, HDC in next 23 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 85. Skip next ST, HDC in remaining 4 STs. CH 2, turn. (84 HDC, 1 CH 1, 4 FPTR) Now we will use two contrasting colours to make the bee With your chosen colour, make a puff ST in the skipped ST under the CH 1 space from row 86 [1]. Tie off your yarn. With another colour (or the same),

make a SL ST in the ST on the top of the puff ST, and around the CH 1 (this secures the bee to the blanket). HDC in the same ST, SL ST into the same ST and tie off yarn [2]. [3] View from back.

I have chosen to add an optional overlay crochet bee trail at this point:

Row 88 HDC in first 72 STs. CH 1 (above bee) and skip the bee. HDC in remaining 16

STs. CH 2, turn. (88 HDC, 1 CH 1) Row 89 HDC in first 4 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 87. Skip next ST, HDC in next 23

STs (including in the CH 1 space above bee). FPTR around FPTR of row 87. Skip next ST, HDC in next 31 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 87. Skip next ST, HDC in next 23 STs. FPTR around FPTR of row 87. Skip next ST, HDC in remaining 4 STs. CH 2, turn. (85 HDC, 4 FPTR)

Border Row 1 SC in each ST on each side of blanket. Make 2x SC in each corner. Row 2 Crab stitch (reverse single crochet) in each ST around blanket
