both AP Seminar and AP research assessments only (butnot on four additional AP Exams) will earn the AP Seminarand Research Certificate.
Sparta High School will start AP Seminar this fall.“Being a part of this innovative program will allow Sparta
High School to reach a broader, more diverse student pop-ulation, working to prepare these students for college andbeyond,” said Dr. Daniel R. Johnson, assistant superinten-dent of Curriculum and Instruction. “The beauty of thisprogram is that is provides our students with more freedomin curriculum choices so that they may access more chal-lenging coursework outside of the traditional AP coursesoffered, while sharpening their reading and writing skills.”
The AP Seminar course, typically taken in 10th or 11thgrade, equips students with the ability to look at real-worldissues from multiple perspectives. Through a variety ofmaterials — including articles, research studies and foun-dational and philosophical texts — students tackle complexquestions; understand and evaluate opposing viewpoints;interpret and synthesize information; and construct, com-municate and defend evidence-based arguments. Education, innovation, sustainability and technology are examples ofthemes or topics covered in AP Seminar. However, teachersand students can choose subjects based on student interests, whether local, regional, national or global.
“By tapping into students’ personal interests, AP Cap-stone will give our students an entry point into stimulatingcoursework more than ever,” Johnson said.
Students will be assessed through a team project and pre-sentation, an individual project and presentation, and anend-of-course written exam.
In the subsequent AP Research course, students design, plan and conduct a yearlong research-based investigationon a topic of individual interest, documenting their processwith a portfolio. Students build on skills developed in theAP Seminar course by learning how to understand researchmethodology; employ ethical research practices; and collect, analyze and synthesize information to build, present anddefend an argument.
“We are proud to offer AP Capstone, which enablesstudents and teachers to focus on topics of their choice ingreat depth,” said Trevor Packer, senior vice president forAP and instruction at the College Board. “This providesterrific opportunities for students to develop the ability towrite and present their work effectively — individually andin groups — the very skills college professors want their stu-dents to possess.”
By responding to and partnering with the higher educa-tion community, the College Board developed AP Capstoneso students can practice skills that will serve them well intheir college years and in careers. The result of feedback fromeducation professionals, the program has won the supportof several colleges and universities.
