    Why have you spurned the Lord and done evil in hissight? You have cut down Uriah the Hittite with the sword;

you took his wife as your own, and him you killed with thesword of the Ammonites.

Now, therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have takenthe w ife of Uriah to be your wife.

R: A proclamation from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians

    Brothers and sisters:

We who know that a person is not justified by works of thelaw but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we havebelieved in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faithin Christ and not by works of the law, because by worksof the law no one will be justified.

For through the law I died to the law that I might live for God.

I have been crucified with Christ. Yet I live, no longer I,but Christ lives in me. Insofar as I now live in the flesh, I liveby faith in the Son of God who has loved me and givenhimself up for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if

justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.

    The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.C: Please stand to give and honor to the Holy Gospel.

    4/12

All: Glory to you, O Lord.

A PHARISEE invited Jesus to dine with him, and he enteredthe Pharisees house and reclined at table. Now therewas a sinful woman in the city who learned that he wasat table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing analabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his

feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, andanointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee whohad invited him saw this he said to himself, If this manwere a prophet, he would know who and what sort ofwoman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.Jesus said to him in reply, Simon, I have something tosay to you.

Tell me, teacher, he said. Two people were in debt toa certain creditor; one owed five hundred days wagesand the other owed fifty. Since they were unable torepay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them willlove him more? Simon said in reply, The one, I suppose, whose large debt was forgiven. He said to him, Youhave judged rightly. Then he turned to the woman andsaid to Simon, Do you see this woman? When I enteredyour house, you did not give me water for my feet, butshe has bathed them with her tears and wiped them withher hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she has notceased kissing my feet since the time I entered.

You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed myfeet with ointment. So I tell you, her many sins have beenforgiven because she has shown great love. But the oneto whom little is forgiven, loves little. He said to her,Your sins are forgiven. The others at table said tothemselves, Who is this who even forgives sins? But hesaid to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go now inpeace.

Afterward he journeyed from one town and village toanother, preaching and proclaiming the good news ofthe kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the

Twelve and some women who had been cured of evilspirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, fromwhom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife ofHerods steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others whoprovided for them out of their resources.

Sisters and Brothers, The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.C: Please be seated for the listening of the homily.

    Homily

Dear Brothers and Sisters, I would like to greet the fathers in theworld a very Happy Fathers Day!!!

This celebration has a very beautiful name: the Gospel of Life. Inthis Eucharist, in the Year of Faith , let us thank the Lord for thegift of life in all its forms, and at the same time let us proclaimthe Gospel of Life.

On the basis of the word of God which we have heard, I wouldlike to offer you three simple points of meditation for our faith:first, the Bible reveals to us the Living God, the God who is lifeand the source of life; second, Jesus Christ bestows life and theHoly Spirit maintains us in life; and third, following Gods wayleads to life, whereas following idols leads to death.

    1. The first reading, taken from the Second Book of Samuel, speaks to us of life and death. King David wants to hide the actof adultery which he committed with the wife of Uriah the

Hittite, a soldier in his army. To do so, he gives the order thatUriah be placed on the front lines and so be killed in battle. TheBible shows us the human drama in all its reality: good and evil, passion, sin and its consequences. Whenever we want to assertourselves, when we become wrapped up in our own selfishnessand put ourselves in the place of God, we end up spawningdeath. King Davids adultery is one example of this. Selfishnessleads to lies, as we attempt to deceive ourselves and thosearound us. But God cannot be deceived. We heard how theprophet says to David: Why have you done evil in the Lords

sight? (cf. 2 Samuel 12:9). The King is forced to face his deeds ofdeath; what he has done is truly a deed of death, not life! He

    5/12

recognizes what he has done and he begs forgiveness: I havesinned against the Lord! (v erse 13). The God of mercy, whodesires life and always forgives us, now forgives David andrestores him to life. The prophet tells him: The Lord has putaway your sin; you shall not die.

What is the image we have of God? Perhaps he appears to usas a severe judge, as someone who curtails our freedom andthe way we live our lives. But the Scriptures everywhere tell usthat God is the Living One, the one who bestows life and pointsthe way to fullness of life. I think of the beginning of the Book ofGenesis: God fashions man out of the dust of the earth; hebreathes in his nostrils the breath of life, and man becomes aliving being (cf. 2:7).God is the source of life; thanks to hisbreath, man has life. Gods breath sustains the entire journey ofour life on earth. I also think of the calling of Moses, where theLord says that he is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac andthe God of Jacob, the God of the living. When he sends Mosesto Pharaoh to set his people free, he reveals his name: I amwho I am, the God who enters i nto our history, sets us free fromslavery and death, and brings life to his people because he isthe Living One. I also think of the gift of the TenCommandments: a path God points out to us towards a lifewhich is truly free and fulfilling. The commandments are not alitany of prohibitions you must not do this, you must not dothat, you must not do the other; on the contrary, they are agreat Yes!: a yes to God, to Love, to life. Dear friends, our livesare fulfilled in God alone, because only he is the Living One!

    2. Todays Gospel brings us another step forward. Jesus allows awoman who was a sinner to approach him during a meal in thehouse of a Pharisee, scandalizing those present. Not only doeshe let the woman approach but he even forgives her sins, saying: Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she lovedmuch; but he who is forgiven little, loves little (L uke 7:47). Jesusis the incarnation of the Living God, the one who brings lifeamid so many deeds of death, amid sin, selfishness and self-absorption. Jesus accepts, loves, uplifts, encourages, forgives, restores the ability to walk, gives back life. Throughout the

Gospels we see how Jesus by his words and actions brings thetransforming life of God. This was the experience of the woman

who anointed the feet of the Lord with ointment: she feltunderstood, loved, and she responded by a gesture of love: shelet herself be touched by Gods mercy, she obtainedforgiveness and she started a new life. God, the Living One, ismerciful. Do you agre e? Lets say it together: God, the LivingOne, is merciful! All together now: God, the Living One, ismerciful. Once again: God, the Living One is merciful!

This was also the experience of the Apostle Paul, as we heard inthe second reading: The life I no w live in the flesh I live by faithin the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me(Galatians 2:20). What is this life? It is Gods own life. And whobrings us this life? It is the Holy Spirit, the gift of the risen Christ. The Spirit leads us into the divine life as true children of God, assons and daughters in the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Arewe open to the Holy Spirit? Do we let ourselves be guided byhim? Christians are spiritual. This does not mean that we arepeople who live in the clouds, far removed from real life, as ifit were some kind of mirage. No! The Christian is someone whothinks and acts in everyday life according to Gods will, someone who allows his or her life to be guided and nourishedby the Holy Spirit, to be a full life, a life worthy of true sons anddaughters. And this entails realism and fruitfulness. Those who letthemselves be led by the Holy Spirit are realists, they know howto survey and assess reality. They are also fruitful; their lives bringnew life to birth all around them.

    3. God is the Living One, the Merciful One; Jesus brings us thelife of God; the Holy Spirit gives and keeps us in our new life astrue sons and daughters of God. But all too often, as we knowfrom experience, people do not choose life, they do notaccept the Gospel of Life but let themselves be led byideologies and ways of thinking that block life, that do notrespect life, because they are dictated by selfishness, self-interest, profit, power and pleasure, and not by love, byconcern for the good of others. It is the eternal dream ofwanting to build the city of man without God, without Gods lifeand love a new Tower of Babel. It is the idea that rejectingGod, the message of Christ, the Gospel of Life, will somehow

lead to freedom, to complete human fulfilment. As a result, theLiving God is replaced by fleeting human idols which offer the

    6/12

intoxication of a flash of freedom, but in the end bring newforms of slavery and death. The wisdom of the Psalmist says:The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; thecommandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes(Psalm 19:8). Let us always remember: the Lord is the Living One,he is merciful. The Lord is the Living One, he is merciful.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us look to God as the God of Life, let us look to his law, to the Gospel message, as the way tofreedom and life. The Living God sets us free! Let us say Yes tolove and not selfishness. Let us say Yes to life and not death.Let us say Yes to free dom and not enslavement to the manyidols of our time. In a word, let us say Yes to the God who islove, life and freedom, and who never disappoints (cf. 1John 4:8; John 11:2 and 8:32); let us say Yes to the God who isthe Living One and the Merciful One. Only faith in the LivingGod saves us: in the God who in Jesus Christ has given us hisown life by the gift of the Holy Spirit and has made it possible to

live as true sons and daughters of God through his mercy. Thisfaith brings us freedom and happiness. Let us ask Mary, Mother of Life, to help us receive and bear constant witness to theGospel of Life. Amen. Please all rise.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.In verdant pastures, He gives me repose.

Beside restful waters He leads me.He touches my soul.

The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

He guides me in right paths for His name's sake.In the dark valley I fear no evil for He is at my side.

His rod and His staff give me courage. The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

And I shall dwell in the house of the Lordall the days of my life.

The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

The a moon shines full at His commandAnd all the stars obey

I sing the goodness of the LordThat filled the earth with food
