THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading (Deuteronomy 30:10-14) (Sit)

Commentator: The commandments of the Lord are near to us, written in our hearts. We need only to carry them out in the daily events of life.

Reader: A reading from the Book of Deuteronomy

MOSES said to the people: “If only you would heed the voice of the Loso, your God, and keep his commandments and statutes that are written in this book of the law, when you return to the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul.

“For this command that I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say, ‘Who will go up in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’

Nor is it across the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us

Page 4: Sunday TV Mass (July 14, 2013)

of it, that we may carry it out?’ No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.”

The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 69)

R - Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.

1. I pray to you, O Lord for the time of your favor, O God! In your great kindness answer me with your constant help. Answer me, O Lord, for bounteous is your kindness; in your great mercy turn toward me. (R)

2. I am afflicted and in pain; let your saving help, O God, protect me. I will praise the name of God in song, and I will glorify him with thanksgiving. (R)

3. “See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! For the Lord hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.” (R)

4. For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. The descendants of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall inhabit it. (R)

Second Reading (Colossians 1:15-20)

C: Christ Jesus is both the image of the invisible God and of the lowly person. By becoming man, he has taken the face of every man and woman.

R: A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians

CHRIST JESUS is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or

principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.

The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

C: Please all rise to give and honor to the Holy Gospel.

Alleluia (Cf. Isaiah 6:63c, 68c) (Stand)

Choir: Aleluya-le-luya! Aleluya-le-luya! Ale-lu-uuuuya-a-le-lu-uuuya! Aleluya-leee-luya!

C: Your words, O Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life.

Gospel (Luke 10:25-37)

P: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit.P: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. All: Glory to you, O Lord.

THERE WAS a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”

He said in reply, You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.

Page 5: Sunday TV Mass (July 14, 2013)

He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”

But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Jesus replied, “Aman fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveller who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn, and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’

Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robber's victim.” He answered,

“The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Sisters and Brothers, the Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

C: Please be seated for the listening of the Homily.

Homily (Sit)

Good evening, brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Before I go, I would like to say Happy Birthday to Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company Chairman, Manny V. Pangilinan!

May Jesus Christ be praised and may his holy Mother pray for us.

Last Sunday we heard about the Lord Jesus sending seventy-two of his disciples to proclaim the kingdom of God.  This week, we encounter the scholar of the law who comes to the Lord Jesus and asks about eternal life.  In response, the Lord Jesus tells the scholar of the law the parable of the Good Samaritan.  Most of us are so familiar with this parable that we can easily hear it, without listening to it.  The story is simple.  A man going from Jerusalem to Jericho is robbed, beaten and nearly killed.  A priest and a Levite walk past the injured man, and a Samaritan stops to care for him.  The Samaritan treats the wounds of the injured man with wine, oil and bandages.  The Samaritan takes him to an inn, pays for his care, and promises to pay for any additional needs when he returns.  The Samaritan demonstrates what it means to be a neighbor.

The law of God calls us to love God and to love our neighbor.  This is not a mysterious commandment.  It is not hidden from our view.  This commandment is near to us.  It is in our mouths and in our hearts as our reading from the book of Deuteronomy tells us.  We have only to carry it out.

The difference between the Samaritan and the priest and the Levite was more than just their actions.  We do not know why the priest and the Levite did not stop to help the injured man. The Lord Jesus, however, tells us that the Samaritan acted because he was moved with compassion for the injured man.  From the compassion that he felt for this unknown and injured man on the side of the road, the Samaritan carried out the love of neighbor. The word compassion means to suffer with.  To be compassionate means we are willing to suffer with those who are suffering.  The Samaritan was willing to suffer and willing to sacrifice for the injured man.  His act of charity cost him several things.  It cost him wine, oil, bandages made of cloth, and comfort on the journey because he gave the injured man his own place on the animal he was riding.  It cost him the two silver coins that he gave to the innkeeper, and whatever he would pay on his return.  And it cost him the most precious gift that we can give to another: it cost him time.  The Samaritan was willing to suffer with suffering.  That is what it means to be a neighbor.

Page 6: Sunday TV Mass (July 14, 2013)

And, my dear brothers and sisters, that is what it means to be a Christian.  In union with the Christ who has suffered for us, we suffer with the poor, the injured, the sick, the rejected and the dying. We suffer with those who have been cast to the side of the road of our society: the unborn, the elderly, the mentally ill, and the disabled.  Every Christian was marked with the sign of Christ’s glorious sufferings in their baptism.  Every vocation is marked with the blessing of Christ’s holy cross.  Mothers suffer with and for their children.  Fathers suffer with and for their families. Husbands suffer for their wives, wives suffer for their husbands, and priests suffer with and for their people.  We are the neighbors and we are the people Christ has called us to be when we are willing to suffer with those who are suffering.

But we were not the first to suffer.  We suffer in union with Christ on the Cross.  For in truth, dear brothers and sisters, we are not the Good Samaritan in the parable.  We are the injured man.  And Christ our Savior traveling the road to the Heavenly City of Jerusalem was moved with compassion for us.  He approached us while we were still sinners, bathed us in the wine of his blood and anointed us with the oil of gladness.  He carried us in his own body and placed us in the inn which is his holy Church and left the precious coins of His Word and His Sacraments until his return.  As we now experience his presence and await his return in glory, we ask for the grace to recognize those who are suffering.  We ask for the gift of compassion in our hearts so that we will be willing to suffer.  And we ask for the grace to suffer with Christ, who has lovingly suffered for us.  Amen.

Rites of Marriage

Profession of Faith (Stand)

P: Tayo po magsi-tayo ulit as we proclaim:

Page 8: Sunday TV Mass (July 14, 2013)

All: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(At the words that follow, up to and including and became man, all bow)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

R: Lord, let us love you in others.C: That the ministers of the Church, Pope Francis,

bishops, priests and deacons may not only speak about love, but be compassionate and loving, so that

after preaching to others, they themselves may receive the gift of salvation, we pray: (R)

C: That our newly elected officials may not only focus on administering the basic services of government to the community but also design programs that would improve the living condition of the citizenry, we pray: (R)

C: That those whose profession is to help the sick and the needy -doctors, nurses, and social workers-may be strongly motivated by gentleness and love for those they help, we pray: (R)

C: That those who “lie wounded on the road”–the street children, the victims of sexual abuse, the old and the lonely-may find good Samaritans who will assist them and restore their health and confidence, we pray: (R)

P: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

For you so loved the world that in your mercy you sent us the Redeemer, to live like us in all things but sin, so that you might love in us what you loved in your Son, by whose obedience we have been restored to those gifts of yours that, by sinning, we had lost in disobedience.

And so, Lord, with all the Angels and Saints, we, too, give you thanks, as in exultation we acclaim:

Holy

Choir: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.Heaven and earth are full, are full of your glory.Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes, who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Page 11: Sunday TV Mass (July 14, 2013)

P: For two or Three, are Gather in my name, there I am in the name in the midst. Sisters and Brothers and all we join us now in Television, where ever you are, there’s welcome the Lord in our midst, in our hearts, the greatest healer is with us.

Let us also welcome our blessed Mother, who is present in every Mass.

You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.

Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body + and Blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion, he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it: for this is my body which will be given up for you.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and, once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it: for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.

Mystery of Faith

C: Please all stand.P: The mystery of faith: Choir: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup

We proclaim your Death, O Lord until you come again.

Anamnesis and Intercessions

P: Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his Death and Resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you.

Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Francis the First our Pope and Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle our Archbishop and all the clergy.

Remember your servants, the victims of the Asiana Airlines crash in San Francisco, California, the earthquake in Baguio and Dagupan, whom you have called from this world to yourself. Grant that he, who was united with your Son in a death like his, may also be one with him in his Resurrection.

Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Doxology and Great Amen

P: Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours almighty Father, for ever and ever.

All: Pierce, O most Sweet Lord Jesus, my inmost soul with the most joyous and healthful wound of Thy love, with true, serene, and most holy apostolic charity, that my soul may ever languish and melt with love and longing for Thee, that it may yearn for Thee and faint for Thy courts, and long to be dissolved and to be with Thee.

Grant that my soul may hunger after Thee, the bread of angels, the refreshment of holy souls, our daily and super substantial bread, having all sweetness and savor and every delight of taste; let my heart ever hunger after and feed upon Thee, upon whom the angels desire to look, and may my inmost soul be filled with the sweetness of Thy savor; may it ever thirst after Thee, the fountain of life, the fountain of wisdom and knowledge, the fountain of eternal light, the

May it ever compass Thee, seek Thee, find Thee, run to Thee, attain Thee, meditate upon Thee, speak of Thee, and do all things to the praise and glory of Thy name, with humility and discretion, with love and delight, with ease and affection, and with perseverance unto the end.

May You alone be ever my hope, my entire assurance, my riches, my delight, my pleasure, my joy, my rest and tranquillity, my peace, my sweetness, my fragrance, my sweet savour, my food, my refreshment, my refuge, my help, my wisdom, my portion, my possession and my treasure, in whom may my mind and my heart be fixed and firmly rooted immovably henceforth and for ever. Angelus Message

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good Evening,

Today our Sunday event for the Angelus is taking place here in Meralco Gym. I greet the inhabitants of this beautiful little town! Above all, I would like to thank you for your prayers, and I do this with all of you who have come here in large numbers as pilgrims.

Today’s Gospel — we are at Chapter 10 of Luke — is the famous Parable of the Good Samaritan. Who was this man? He was an ordinary person coming down from Jerusalem on his way to Jericho on the road that crosses the Judean Desert. A short time before, on that road a man had been attacked by brigands, robbed, beaten and left half dead by the

wayside. Before the Samaritan arrived, a priest as well as a Levite had passed by, that is, two people associated with worship in the Lord’s Temple. They saw the poor man, but passed him by without stopping. Instead, when the Samaritan saw that man, “he had compassion” (Luke 10:33), the Gospel says. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; then he set him on his own mount, took him to an inn and paid for his board and lodging... in short, he took care of him: this is the example of love of neighbour. However, why does Jesus choose a Samaritan to play the lead in the parable? Because Samaritans were despised by Jews on account of their different religious traditions; and yet Jesus shows that the heart of that Samaritan was good and generous and that — unlike the priest and the Levite — he puts into practice the will of God who wants mercy rather than sacrifices (cf. Mk 12:33). God always wants mercy and does not condemn it in anyone. He wants heartfelt mercy because he is merciful and can understand well our misery, our difficulties and also our sins. He gives all of us this merciful heart of his! The Samaritan does precisely this: he really imitates the mercy of God, mercy for those in need.

A man who lived to the full this Gospel of the Good Samaritan is the Saint we are commemorating today: St Camillus de Lellis, Founder of the Clerks Regular Ministers to the Sick, Patron of ill people and health-care workers. St Camillus died on 14 July 1614: this very day his fourth centenary is being inaugurated and will end in a year. I greet with deep affection all the spiritual sons and daughters of St Camillus who live by his charisma of charity in daily contact with the sick. Be “Good Samaritans” as he was! And I hope that doctors, nurses and all those who work in hospitals and clinics may also be inspired by the same spirit. Let us entrust this intention to the intercession of Mary Most Holy.

Moreover I would like to entrust another intention to Our Lady, together with you all. The 4th State of the Nation Address of the President Benigno S. Aquino III is now at hand. One can see that there are many young people here, but you are all young at heart! I shall leave in a week, but many people will set out for Batasang Pambansa even sooner. Let us therefore pray for this great event for the Government

Page 18: Sunday TV Mass (July 14, 2013)

Sector which is beginning, that Our Lady of Aparecida, Patroness of Brazil, may guide the footsteps of the participants and open their hearts to accepting the mission that Christ will give them.

Let us now pray together…
