Song of Gathering October 4, 2009

Jesus, I ComeWords by William Sleeper, 1887; Music by Greg Thompson, 2000

Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,Jesus, I come; Jesus I come.Into Thy freedom, gladness and light,Jesus, I come to Thee.Out of my sickness into Thy health,Out of my wanting and into Thy wealth,Out of my sin and into Thyself,Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of my shameful failure and loss,Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come.Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,Jesus, I come to Thee.Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm,Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm,Out of distress into jubilant psalm,Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of unrest and arrogant pride,Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come.Into Thy blessed will to abide,Jesus, I come to Thee.Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,Out of despair into raptures above,Upward forever on wings like a dove,Jesus, I come to Thee.

Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come.Into the joy and light of Thy home,Jesus, I come to Thee.Out of the depths of ruin untold,Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,Ever Thy glorious face to behold,Jesus, I come to Thee

Meditation Romans 4:1-5What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.

Call to Worship Psalm 18:1-3

Leader: I love you, O LORD, my strength.

People: The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my strong-hold.

Leader: I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. O mag-nify the Lord with me.

People: Let us exalt His name together.

Songs of PraiseO Love That Will Not Let Me Go

Words by George Matheson; Music by Christopher Miner

O love that will not let me go,I rest my weary soul in Thee;I give Thee back the life I owe,That in Thine ocean depths its flowMay richer, fuller be.

O light that followest all my way,I yield my flickering torch to Thee;My heart restores its borrowed ray,That in Thy sunshine’s blaze its day

May brighter, fairer be.

O joy that seekest me through pain,I cannot close my heart to Thee;I trace the rainbow through the rain,And feel the promise is not vain,That morn shall tearless be.

O cross that liftest up my head,I dare not ask to fly from Thee;I lay in dust life’s glory dead,And from the ground there blossoms redLife that shall endless be.

How Firm a FoundationWords by Robert Keene 1787; Music: Traditional American Melody,

1832

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He hath said,You, who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?

In every condition, in sickness, in health; In poverty’s vale, or abounding in wealth; At home and abroad, on the land, on the sea,As thy days may demand, shall thy strength ever be.

Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,For I am thy God and will still give thee aid;I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to standUpheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.

When through the deep waters I call thee to go,The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie,My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only designThy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose,I will not, I will not desert to its foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.

Responsive Reading Psalm 32Leader:  Blessed is the one whose transgression is

forgiven,whose sin is covered.

People:  Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

Leader:  For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.

People:  For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

Leader: I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

People: Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to You at a time when You may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach Him.

Leader: You are a hiding place for me; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with shouts of deliverance.

People: I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Leader: Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.

People: Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.

All:  Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

Jesus, I am resting, resting in the joy of what Thou art, I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heartThou hast bid me gaze upon Thee, and Thy beauty fills my soulFor by Thy transforming power, Thou hast made me whole

O how great Thy loving kindness, vaster, broader than the seaOf how marvelous Thy goodness lavished all on meYes, I rest in Thee Beloved, know what wealth of grace is ThineKnow Thy certainty of promise and have made it mine

(Chorus)Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what Thou artI am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart

Simply trusting Thee Lord Jesus, I behold Thee as Thou artAnd Thy love so pure, so changeless satisfies my heartSatisfies its deepest longings, meets, supplies its every needCompasseth me round with blessings; Thine is love indeed

The LORD's Promise (verses 9-21)

Song of ResponseRock of Ages

Words by Augustus Toplady, 1776; Music by Thomas Hastings, 1830

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,Let me hide myself in Thee;Let the water and the blood,From Thy wounded side which flowed,Be of sin the double cure;Cleanse me from its guilt and power

Not the labor of my handsCan fulfill Thy law’s demands;Could my zeal no respite know,Could my tears forever flow,All for sin could not atone;Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,Simply to the cross I cling;10

Naked, come to Thee for dress;Helpless look to Thee for grace;Foul, I to the fountain fly;Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,When mine eyelids close in death,When I soar to worlds unknown,See Thee on Thy judgment throne,Rock of Ages, cleft for me,Let me hide myself in Thee.

Let the water and the blood,From Thy wounded side which flowed,Be of sin the double cure;Cleanse me from its guilt and powerRock of Ages, cleft for me,Let me hide myself in Thee;
