Focal Passage

Mark 11:12-25

Page 13: Sunday School Lesson 2009 10 04

Mark 11:12-25

12The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13Seeing

in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit.

When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the

season for figs. 14Then he said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from

you again." And his disciples heard him say it.

Mark 11:12-25

15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying

and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the

temple courts.

Mark 11:12-25

17And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written: " 'My house will be called

a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.‘ "

18The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a

way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching. 19When evening came, they

went out of the city.

Mark 11:12-25

20In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21Peter remembered and said to

Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!"  22"Have faith in God," Jesus answered. 23"I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and

does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be

done for him.

Mark 11:12-25

24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you

have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

Page 18: Sunday School Lesson 2009 10 04

What drew Jesus to the fig tree?

• He was hungry• It was in this path• It had a promising appearance

– covered with leaves

Page 19: Sunday School Lesson 2009 10 04

How did the fig tree symbolize the nation of Israel?

• The activities at the temple had an outwardly religious appearance

• Inwardly they were:–Meaningless ritual– Performance only– Exploitive–Hypocritical

Page 20: Sunday School Lesson 2009 10 04

What can be done to remedy fruitlessness?

1. Have faith in God

2. Whatever obstacles to faith you face in life – ask God to move them

3. Pride is the primary hindrance to faith in God

Page 21: Sunday School Lesson 2009 10 04

Was it reasonable for Jesus to expect fruit out of season?

The Flower Blooms Inside

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

goodness, faithfulness,gentleness and self-control.

Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

Was it reasonable for Jesus to expect fruit out of season?

1In the presence of God and of Christ

Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his

appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of

season;

2 Timothy 4:2

Product must accompany Promise

• Christians may appear promising from afar

• Our outward ‘appearance’ may in and of itself draw others to us

• But what satisfies those who come is not the promise – but the product

• We need to offer people fruit• That fruit needs to always be available

– in season and out of season

Page 26: Sunday School Lesson 2009 10 04

Can you be a Disciple and not produce fruit?

Page 27: Sunday School Lesson 2009 10 04

Luke 13:6-9

6Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. 7So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down!

Why should it use up the soil?'  8" 'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for

one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it. 9If it bears fruit next year, fine!

If not, then cut it down.' "

2. What things in your life are hindering your ability to produce fruit?

3. How can you cultivate your life to bear more fruit?
