We enjoyedseeing theScholarshipRecipientsSunday. Iheard several
folks say they would like for themto be called up out of thecongregation, so we would knowwho they are. Maybe next year? It was nice to see Bill Clark inchurch Sunday! FCC was well represented atthe Broken Arrow PAC Saturdaynight (fantastic theater)! TheRankin Brothers Classic MusicReview recreated sounds of themusical stars from the 50sthrough 80s. “Elvis” wasespecially good! Liz Utley, DellaDavidson, Charlie Crews, GayWion and I really enjoyed theshow. This handsome boy was eatingwith Bob Rorschach one eveninglast week and I went over andsaid, “Don’t tell me this is Leighand Tom’s little boy!” He stood upand up and is as tall as I am. Hesaid “Yes. I am Daniel, and I am18 and will be a senior at MetroChristian next year.” What a niceyoung man! My five-year-old great-grandsonwas visiting his other great-grandparents a couple of weeksago, and he sat them down andtold them, “Now, I know you allare not used to little kids beingnoisy and running through thehouse, and it is because you’reold, and that’s okay.” After theystopped laughing, they let himstay. A group of friends on a crosscountry road trip took a tour oftheir favorite brewery. As theymarveled at the process, one ofthem slipped and fell into a hugevat of beer.
This has been an exciting week inthe search and call process. Wehad candidates in Tulsa to visit withthe team and tour the church andcommunity. While we havecorresponded extensively with theseindividuals it is great to finally meetthem in person. We were able toshare with them the ministrycurrently happening at FCC andhear what their vision for our futuremight be.
As I mentioned in the last Vision, thefirst impression is important. To aidin making ours a good one CassieGray made great hospitality basketsthat had the FCC book “How Firm aFoundation,” information about Tulsaand Oklahoma, and snacks(including several Oklahoma madeproducts). We are grateful for herhelping to share the “extravaganthospitality” that FCC has becomeknown for.
The search team is enthusiasticabout what we have seen and heard. As we continue discerning who Godis calling to be here, we feel that weare getting closer to understandingwho that might be. I continue to askfor your prayers for these candidatesand the congregation. Bright daysare ahead.
Sincerely, Ben Gray

My Most Influential Teacher
Mr. Garrison was my most influentialteacher. He was my history teacherwhen Kennedy was assassinated. Hewas the reason I majored in history inundergraduate school. I centered myselfon American History from the Civil War tothe present.
At Crestview (Ohio) Junior High SchoolMr. Garrison made it all “real”. He didn’tjust stand up front and lecture. He toldstories about the various historical menand women; their relationship with eachother and their relationship with history.

What better transition from VBS -“school of spiritual studies” to the“school of scholastic studies”-thanone last summer-fun festival withmusic, delicious food and drinks, water and playground activities anddramatic presentations?
Sunday, August 25 at 12:15, FCCwill celebrate the kickoff of the 2013-2014 academic school year andconclusion of VBS by hosting a fun-filled summertime family event onthe FCC playground and parking lot.
Director of Children’s Ministries,Beverly Vale Brown says VBS hasprovided many wonderful spirituallearning opportunities for children,“We are completing a servicelearning unit that involved thechildren making cards of apprecia-tion for city employees. LastSunday, they hand-made thank-youcards with candy stuck to them. This week, our four vans will takegroups of children to four differentlocations in the city, where our kidswill go to a fire or police station andpresent the cards to the men andwomen stationed there. This com-pletes their act of community care.”
Beverly says the last two weeksof VBS will be focused on servingthe world through Jesus. “As far asthe children go, they have learned agreat deal about thinking outside ofthemselves. They’ve learned that inevery area of their lives--family,friends, neighborhood, school --they can help other people.”
Right now, Beverly says shecould use some help from service-minded adults and teens who wouldbe willing to help with preparationsfor the the family fun fair.

Dear Scholarship Team, It is with great joy and thanksgiv-ing that I write to your generouscongregation. When I applied toBrite in order to begin my D.Min.program, my wife and I kept won-dering how we could make thiswork. Now that we have two chil-dren, the prospect of going back toschool seemed daunting andfinancially draining. ...Thank you so much for yourkindness and willingness to helpstudents, even those you may nothave met before. On Sunday morning August 25th, we will conclude our summer-longVacation Bible School as FCC youth and children present a VBS grand finale“God’s Big Backyard,” with a skit and songs. A family-style barbeque lunch will follow recognition of our students andeducators returning to classrooms. During the service we will bless thoseinvolved with all levels of education: Sunday School, K-12, college, administra-tion, support - all who do their very best to ensure the next generation is well-equipped to lead and succeed in the future. We are proud to have so manymembers of our congregation who are part of our country’s education system- one that is the very bedrock of freedom, democracy and religious liberty.(See EDUCATION Page 2)
