The Feast of Pentecost: On this last and greatest day of the feast, the Lord pours forth the Holy Spirit in the form like tongues of fire upon his followers. On this day we are reminded of our bap-tism in fire and the Spirit, we are anointed with the manifold gifts of the Spirit, and we receive the courage and wisdom to proclaim the gospel of the Lord. The church and altars are decorated in green to show the living Spirit. Some of the faithful will also decorate their dining room and prayer corner with green branches. How will you celebrate the life of the Holy Spirit in your home?

"If from one burning lamp someone lights another, then another from that one, and so on in suc-cession, he has light continuously. In the same way, through the Apostles ordaining their succes-sors, and these successors ordaining others, and so on, the grace of the Holy Spirit is handed down through all generations and enlightens all who obey their shepherds and teachers.”

St. Gregory Palamas, “On how the Holy Spirit was manifested and shared out at Pentecost

PENTECOST SUNDAY

(Readings taken from the web page of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: www.usccb.org)

EPISTLE (Acts 2:1-11)

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit en-abled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language? We are Parthi-ans, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phry-gia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

Gospel (John 7:37-52 & 8: 12)

On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, “Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: ‘Rivers of living water will flow from within him.’

He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Page 6: Sunday of Pentecost...Myrrh-Bearer’s Retreat for Women - June 28-30, 2019: Sponsored by the Eparchy of Phoenix and held at the Madonna Retreat Center in Albuquerque, NM. . Women,

Some in the crowd who heard these words said, “This is truly the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.”But others said, “The Messiah will not come from Galilee, will he? Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David’s family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not bring him?”The guards answered, “Never before has anyone spoken like this one.” So the Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed.”Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, “Does our law con-demn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?” They answered and said to him, “You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
