CHEESEFARE SUNDAY (Readings taken from the web page of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops,

www.usccb.org)EPISTLE: ROMANS 13:11-14:4

And do this because you know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salva-tion is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness [and] put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and licentiousness, not in rivalry and jeal-ousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh. Welcome anyone who is weak in faith, but not for disputes over opinions. One person believes that one may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. The one who eats must not despise the one who abstains, and the one who abstains must not pass judgment on the one who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on someone else’s servant? Before his own master he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 6:14-21If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not for-give others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions. “When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

LET’S BEGIN GREAT AND HOLY LENT WELL (AND TOGETHER)!

Today is Cheesefare Sunday and we have the opportunity to combine our Pot Luck Sunday of good food and good company (made better by yours, of course) as well as a time to start the Great Fast with a spirit of true brotherhood and unity, which is made possible by mutual forgiveness. Our Pot Luck brunch shall begin at the Parish Hall immediately after the Divine Liturgy this morning, or about 10:30 a.m.

As many of us know, the season of Lent begins with the celebration of Forgiveness Vespers on Cheesefare Sunday. To share the beginning of this holy season as a parish, we invite all of you to join us at our cathedral at 12 noon, right after the Pot Luck brunch. As a feature of our Byzantine Catholic identity, at Forgiveness Vespers our clerics and parishioners mutually forgive each other at the end of Vespers. This mutual forgiveness prepares us for the Great Fast which is a time of forgive-ness, repentance, penance, prayer, Lenten worship, and good works.

If it is Friday in Lent, then it is time for our LENTEN FISH FRY!

This year, we invite everyone to save Friday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m. at our parish hall. As always, volunteers are most welcome to help make these events happen smoothly for the benefit of our parish family. Please sign the volunteer work list for the Fish Fry which is located on the coffee counter in the parish hall. We need: Set-up crew, Dinner crew and Clean-up crew.A good investment for men at Lent: Our Men’s Group

Although our men would do well to grow in holiness throughoutr the year, and our Men’s Group is ready to help, in Lent our Men’s Group provides a great opportunity to do so with fraternal support as well as with prayer and honest, respectful dialogue over Fr. Walter Ciszek’s renowned and profound autobiography, With God in Russia. In March, we will meet on Tuesdays the 5th and 19th at 7 p.m. to pray Small Compline in the cathedral and then at the conference room of our rectory. All men of good will are welcome to join us and we shall start chapter 2 of this Servant of God’s testimony on March 5th. Please approach Fr. Rojas with any questions about our Men’s Group.

WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER: EPARCHIAL APPEAL 2019

We have begun the 2019 Appeal for the Eparchy of Phoenix. By now you have all received your pledge forms and information about donating. We hope you will take the opportunity to choose from the various options of donating: cash, checks, credit cards and online donating. We are asking each household to donate $275.00, but of course larger amounts are welcome. Your generosity to the Eparchial Appeal not only helps to solidify us as a parish but also as an eparchy. Much can be ac-

complished by our Eparchy of Phoenix because of your generosity and commitment to the appeal. Our parish goal is $41,657.70.

ATTN: ALL “HOLY ROLLERS” & PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LEARN HOW TO BAKE

The traditional Ruthenian baking is an art which has been passed from generation to gen-eration in Europe and here in America. Without our “holy rollers” and people who would like to learn these skills, it would be tragic to lose what we have come to love along with a key way to raise funds for our beloved parish. Therefore, with heartfelt thanks to our veteran “holy rollers”, we in-vite people of good will to join our selfless “holy rollers” at our baking days scheduled for Monday, March 18, Tuesday, March 19, and Wednesday, March 20 at our parish hall, starting at 8 a.m.

Healing for Soul & Body are Available from the Eastern Catholic Clergy of Arizona

On Sunday, March 31 at 6 p.m., there will be a Healing Service (a.k.a. Anointing Service) at Holy Dormition Ukrainian Catholic Church (3720 W. Maryland Ave., Phoenix). After the Healing Service, Confessions will be available. During Great and Holy Lent, the best way to prepare for the Resurrection of Christ is the Mystery of Repentance!
