Debbie Proctor Update

My time back in NYC has been one of intense prayer and fasting to seek God’s

will and direction for the work He has for me in Astoria. God has been faithful and all my Muslim contacts have returned and our relationships are growing closer with many opportunities to share my faith in Jesus Christ – not as a prophet, as they see him - but as the Son of God who sacrificed His life to pay the penalty for our sins. All my students have also returned for Bible Study – both the believers and the non-believers. I ask for your prayers for all my Muslim contacts and my Bible Study students. For specific prayer requests and so you can pray for these people by name, please send me a request at [email protected]. Thank you for your prayers and your support!

A Day Apart Wednesday, October 18

9am to 12:30pm Explore different types of prayer as presented by different presenters. We will be exploring breath prayer, centering prayer and journaling as prayer. A light lunch will be served.

Please contact the church office to register so that we may prepare enough lunches. If you have questions, please call Myscha Crouch at 256-773-0348.

To all of the kind, amazing, sweet people who volunteered in our time of need,

Thank you to each and every one of you for the love and support you showed to every member of our family and our friends. From the planning, setting up, cooking, cleaning and rearranging to the serving, greeting, praying and tearing down afterward. We know that without all of your effort Brian’s celebration of life, funeral

and dinner after would not have been such a beautiful remembrance of his life. There were so many people working behind the scenes to make sure that we were well looked after.

Thank you all. The Woeber Family

Wesley Connections Page 3 They will know we are Christians by our love OVERLOADING THE SYSTEM

What a week we had at the office last week. It all began with a simple request to upgrade our internet equipment and service. Over the years, our WiFi had become slower and slower until it had become almost unusable in the office. The modem and router were outdated and running at slow speeds. So, the week begins. After many phone calls, lots of waiting and two days of trying to get things back on track, I learned that our problem was caused by too many things being plugged into each other that was creating a loop that was feeding information to something else and overloading the system and causing it to quit working. Now that I have told you everything I know about the IT problems we had last week, let me share with you a lesson that we can all learn from it, even if we don’t know much about computers and how the internet works. When we plug too many things into our lives, our minds and our hearts we can suffer from data, information and sensory overload. We live in a world of the 24-hour news cycle. When something happens in our world we know about. This can cause sensory overload. We get up in the morning and we turn on the news, open our news apps on our tablet, computer, smartphone or we open the newspaper and there it is: Hurricanes hit Houston and Florida, earthquake in Mexico, fires in Montana. And if the natural disasters weren’t enough we read stories of violence, hatred, racism, drug abuse and all kinds of things happening right here in our city, state and nation. That doesn’t even begin to cover what’s going on across our world. Living in a 24-hour news cycle world causes us to ask what can we possibility do? How can we respond or help with so much in so many places? Often times this causes us to shut down. Our brains and emotions are overloaded and we are stymied. This is where our life of stewardship comes in. When we take our vows of membership in the United Methodist church, we are basically pledging to live a life of stewardship. So, when sensory overload takes hold in your life, stop and remember your vows. Support the ministries, not just of our church but of the whole (universal) church: PRAY: pray for all those affected by natural disasters, who suffer from any of the “isms” that separate and oppress, all who are struggling with illness, death and the stuff of life. PRESENCE: show up. Volunteer at the disaster response warehouse, civic organizations, youth, children, adult ministries at the church. Volunteer to go on a mission trip. GIFTS: help financially. Donate to UMCOR, pledge to tithe to the general fund of the church. SERVICE: help in any way you can. Not just in major disasters but in the disaster of life. Stop and help someone broken down on the side of the road, help a child who needs tutoring, give a ride to someone in need. WITNESS: be a positive witness for our church, but most of all be a positive witness for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. October is stewardship month. Our vows lead us into a life of stewardship. When sensory overload occurs and you feel stuck and don’t know what to do, remember stewardship is a way of life, not just a check dropped in a bag or offering plate.

Gratitude For the last few weeks, I have felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. This gratitude is not the simple “I am thankful for my blessings”, but a very deep feeling of gratefulness to God for all of the many ways he has touched my life and provided for my every need. This renewed feeling of gratitude has made me look at how I am sharing my God-given gifts. I am looking for guidance for new ways to share those gifts in the coming months. Stewardship month is upon us and I would challenge you to look deep into your heart to see how God has enriched your life and how you can be generous in every way. This generosity includes your time, talents, gifts, service and witness. During October, you will hear how you can follow your call at Wesley. God calls everyone of us to be in relationship with Him and to serve Him in our daily lives. It is my hope that you will spend some time in prayer and meditation about how God is calling you not just at Wesley but also in your family, community and world To help you in following your call, we will be including an interest survey on the back of our commitment cards. This will give you an opportunity to think about where you might serve in the church or community. These surveys will be available in worship, around the church and on the church website. Please let me know if you need one mailed to you. Lisa Ramey

We have an energetic and passionate youth group here at Wesley Memorial. During September, we worshipped, laughed, prayed and served together. We had Kingdom Worship Band lead us in a community night of worship, we kicked off our small groups, and were able to connect with God and each other. Our youth room is now open Wednesdays at 3:30pm for those who need a place to study. Homework help is available.

October Announcements: Sunday October 8- No Youth Group Sunday October 15- Church-wide potluck meal and Music Celebration 5pm in McWhorter Hall. Youth Bank will play. Sunday October 29- Fall party at the Herons’ house. Meet at church at 4:30pm and we will be back by 8pm.

Someone once said “He who sings prays twice.” Music is and always has been a vital part of worship and our daily relationship with our Lord. From the time of King David, people have always expressed their love for and understanding of God through music. This has been done with various instruments as well as with singing. Wesley Memorial is fortunate to have many talented musicians who participate in both of our Sunday morning worship services via the Praise Band (Arise Service) and the Chancel Choir (Sanctuary Service). Our Youth Praise Band leads youth worship Wednesday evenings and occasionally leads music in our Arise service. Our Handbell Choir adds another musical element to both of our worship services several times a year.

Sunday evening, October 15, we will present a Celebration of Music event in McWhorter Hall. This celebration will immediately follow our covered dish meal which begins at 5:00 p.m. Church will provide

meat and drinks. You are asked to bring your favorite side dish or dessert. During our celebration of music, the Chancel Choir will present several of our favorite anthems. Our Praise Band will play our favorite songs and the Youth Praise Band will lead us in a few songs as well. This is a great opportunity to worship our Lord through music. All are invited to come, share a meal and celebrate Wesley’s music ministries together. This would be a great opportunity to invite a friend or neighbor to come and join us as well. I believe God will truly bless our time together.

Ladies walk # 31 October 26-29

Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center in Cullman.

What is this all about? You will enjoy three days of singing, learning, laughing, worshiping, reflecting, praying and participating in small groups. Discussions center on 15 talks given by laity and clergy. These talks present the theme of God’s grace, how that grace comes alive in the Christian community and how it is expressed in the world. You’ll also discover how grace is real in your life, how you live a life of grace, and how you bring that grace to others.

The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special times of worship and daily celebration of Holy Communion. For more information, contact Lisa Ramey, 256-355-1842, or Myscha Crouch, 256-773-0348.

We have delivered our first month of snack bags. I am so thrilled that we still get to be a part of this great service to our neighborhood chil-dren. This year we are serving 30 children through Full Tummies. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time and those who continue to give monetarily.

GOD’S GARDEN AT WESLEY, AND PRICEVILLE MTN

As God’s Garden at Wesley draws to a close for this season, we have reached an all-time high in the amount of produce we have been able to give to the needy. For the 2017 growing season, we have been able to grow, pick and distribute more than 4,700 pounds of raw produce. Thanks be to God for allowing us to bless others through our efforts this year. We should finish our distributions within the next month and move into the next phase of our garden ministry. God bless all who helped with this outreach this year.
