“God mounts His throne to shouts of joy, a blare of trumpets for the Lord” (Responsorial Psalm 47, the Ascension of the Lord)

In the words of the Preface for the Mass of the Ascension of the Lord, we hear the words:

“For the Lord Jesus, the King of glory, conqueror of sin and death,

ascended today to the highest heavens, as the Angels gazed in wonder.

    Mediator between God and man,

judge of the world and Lord of hosts, he ascended, not to distance himself from our lowly state But that we, his members, might be confident in following

where he, our Head and Founder, has gone before”

In his Ascension, the Risen Lord does not abandon us, but rather fulfills his mission on earth and returns to seated at the right hand of the Father. It is now our turn to go out as his mis-sionary disciples and proclaim, teach, share and show by example our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. The gospel reading for Mass today is often called the “Great Commission”: “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples

of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you

always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

So, let us not just stand here “looking up at the sky”…rather, let us carry on in His holy name.

N e w M i n i s t r y o f H o s p i t a l i t y We are looking for a whole new “Ministry of Hospitality” that will be in place when we come back to Mass. You will be trained for this ministry and your welcoming presence will delight the hearts and souls of our parish family and keep us safe. We will need 80-100 folks to participate. Here are the ba-sics: You need to be from 18-64 years of age with no compromising health conditions. You will need to be at the church 30 minutes before Mass and for 20 minutes following Mass. Some will greet folks at the entrance to the parking lot; some will guide folks into the carefully

designated pews; some will assist folks with Communion lines; some will help folks back to their cars at the end of Mass. All will help to disinfect the church and pews, in accordance with CDC recommendations, following each Mass and prepare it for the next Mass.

Volunteers will be provided with masks, gloves, disinfectant spray and disposable wipes. The Diocese of Orange is giving the directives and guidelines for church capacity, social distancing, cleanliness of the church, and liturgy. These are very well thought out and it is up to each parish to get their plan in order. If you are interested in becoming part of this new Ministry of Hospitality, please visit our website www.st-timsrc.org/ministryofhospitality to fill in the form and we will get in touch with you very soon!

Dear Friends, Is there any reconciling our “living in Christ” and our “living in anxiety?” Why do you and I experience anxiety? Because we are not indifferent to human suffering. Because we ques-tion life’s meaning. Because we receive so little thanks or validation of our life. Because the fruit of our labor remains hidden. Because persons we love are ill. Because persons we love are struggling—perhaps suffering. Why anxiety? Because we take our responsibilities seriously. Because our future is unclear. Because life’s de-mands are overwhelming. Because we are honest and choose not to run away from reality. Because we have suffered significant losses in our life—some without much, if any, warning—and so, we live our lives, “waiting for the other shoe to drop.” Why anxiety? Because we are fragile human beings. “Living in Christ” and “living in anxiety” are not mutually exclusive. “Living in Christ” is not the eradication of worry and anxiety. We say to ourselves: “If only I had more faith, I wouldn’t worry so much!” “Living in Christ” is learning to “tame,” “domesticate,” and, perhaps, by God’s Grace, one day “befriend” our anxiety, transcend or “move beyond” our anxiety, that it have less power over us. “Living in Christ” means allowing our worry to turn us toward Christ—to face Christ! “Living in Christ” helps us to keep our worry and anxiety in perspective: anxiety is not the totality of our life, but only part of the larg-er picture of our life, only part of the larger context of our life—a life blessed and redeemed. “Living in Christ” means allowing our anxiety to turn us to prayer: our silent listening through and beyond the clatter of our worries. “Living in Christ” means learning to be grateful in the midst of worry and anxiety. Yes, there is anxiety, but there is also faith, however weak and incomplete. Yes, there is anxiety, but there is also hope: we can still fan the ember of hope into fire once again, even though “we will plant trees in the shade of which others will sit, but we will not.” We will persevere, despite whatever comes our way. Yes, there is anxiety, but there is also love: we can still be a person for others, a person of compassion and self-giving—against the seeming preponderance of selfishness and evil. We can still create beauty—and a beauti-ful life. We can live with wisdom, integrity, and virtue—and “grace under pressure.” There is still room for peaceful-ness of heart and joy! For despite the sorrow and tears, life is good and beautiful and meaningful, beyond measure. We can seek “the beauty of holiness and the holiness of beauty.”

Are there not still fireflies Is not beauty still beauty

And truth still truth Are there not still poets Are there not still lovers

Are there not still mothers (fathers), sisters and brothers

Are there not still fireflies Are there not still stars at night

Can we not see them In a bowl of night

(Lawrence Ferlinghetti) Sincerely, Fr. Craig Butters

Recently Father Craig Butters was reminded of a homily he delivered on June 3, 2012. He sent me a copy of it and with his permission, I would like to share it with you as the topic is timely and, in true Father Craig style, beautifully expressed...

A n E a s t e r S e a s o n R e f l e c t i o n I was shown three manners of our Lord’s face. The face of Suffering that he showed while here in this life, dying. Though this face was mournful and trou-bled yet it was glad and joyful, for he is God. The face of Empathy and Compassion he shows with the certainty of caring to all his lovers who let them-selves go to his love. The Joyful face was shown more than the other two and continued the longest because this face will exist endlessly. –Julian of Nor-wich (trans. by Brendan Doyle) Only in our imagination can we see Christ’s face as it appeared during his time on earth: the face of the infant Jesus lying in the manger, the boyish face of Jesus conversing with the temple elders, the face of Jesus at his baptism in the Jordan, the compas-sionate face of Jesus when he ministered to the poor and the outcasts, the suffering face of Jesus as he died on the cross, and the glorified face of the risen Christ. Unlike us, Mary Magdalen knew what Jesus real-ly looked like. She was one of his most beloved dis-ciples and the first to visit the place where he had been buried. According to Saint John’s Gospel, the risen Jesus was there when she arrived, but Mary of all people did not recognize him at first. Perhaps in her grief and shock she was temporarily blinded. But when he said, “Mary!” (for me the most dra-matic word in the entire Gospel account of the Res-urrection), she knew it was he. As we often sing together at Sunday Mass, God “calls us each by name,” but not in the voice that Mary Magdalen immediately recognized. It may be in the voice of a friend, a spouse or other family member, in a pastoral homily, in a work of art, music or literature, or indeed in the face of a homeless ref-ugee. Mary Magdalen’s lapse was only momentary, but how often do we fail to recognize Christ’s pres-ence in our everyday lives. The main reason is that we are simply overwhelmed by the distractions of living in the world, by worries about our kids and aging parents, by concerns about health and paying the rent and, these days, especially about coping with the pandemic of COVID-19. It won’t be easy and we need a lot of help. Let’s pray together then, in the words of another hymn we often sing at Mass, “Open our eyes, Lord, help us to see your face. Open our ears, Lord, help us to hear your voice. Open our hearts, Lord, help us to love like you.” -Bill Kramer, Life, Justice and Peace Ministry

Feeling down? Do you have a need for prayer? May-be a desire for a spiritual guide at this time? Or may-be you just want to pray with someone? We can help! Call our Spiritual Guidance and Prayer Helpline to talk to and pray with a religious, priest, deacon or other lay spiritual guides. The helpline is a free service available across the Diocese of Orange.
