Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude, that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that op- pose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God, and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the ser- vice of God sweet and amiable, the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread to displease Him in any way. Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Your true disciples and animate me in all things with Your Holy Spirit. Amen. Of all the feasts of Our Lord, I venture to say, that in a certain sense, the Ascen- sion is the greatest, because it is the su- preme glorification of Christ Jesus. Holy Church calls this Ascension “admirable" (Litany of the Saints), and “glorious" (Secret, Mass for the Ascen- sion), and throughout the Divine Office of this feast, she makes us chant the mag- nificence of this mystery.… The mystery of Jesus Christ’s Ascension is represented to us in a manner suitable to our nature: we contemplate the Sacred Humanity rising from the earth and ascending visi- bly towards the heavens. - From Christ in His Mysteries by Blessed Columba Marmion, O.S.B. ANNOUNCEMENTS– ST. MARY’S, SALEM

FR. JAMES K. SEIWERT will offer the 10:00am Mass today (Sunday) as his

third Mass of Thanksgiving; we welcome him and his friends from South Dakota. Many of you have met Fr. Seiwert, who was ordained a priest on May 2 in San Antonio, during his visits to Salem over the last two years. Following Mass, Father will offer his first priestly blessing to those who would like to receive it. Please pray for Fr. Seiwert as he prepares for service to God’s people in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

MONDAY IS MEMORIAL DAY: Weather permitting, our morning Mass will be celebrated

at St. Mary Cemetery (and since it is a federal holiday, Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am, and not at 8:25am). If it rains, we will celebrate Mass at 10:00am in the church. Following Mass, Father Lawrence will conduct the blessing of graves.

THE SANCTUARY LAMP before the Blessed Sacrament burns from May 18 through 30 for

the happy repose of the soul of Joe Eichacker, at the request of Don and Elaine Eichacker, and from June 1 through 14 for the happy repose of the soul of Lee Baldwin and the intentions of his widow, Mrs. Judy Baldwin. Please remember these intentions in

your prayers before the Lord Jesus, truly present in the Sacrament of the Altar.

LEGION OF MARY PILGRIM SHRINE SCHEDULE: May 20: Frances McPhillips; May 27:

Robert & Kathy Deters; and June 3: Rich & Cathy Roling. Please call 425-3000 for information on how to host the Pilgrim Shrine. The next Patrician Meeting will be on May 28; topic: Moses - the man who conversed with God.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT SALEM:

THE NOTRE DAME SCANDAL: Of the 83 U. S. Bishops who publicly opposed the honor

given to Mr. Obama at the University of Notre Dame’s Commencement last Sunday, Bishop Trautman’s statement of May 12, 2009 was among the most succinct. I share it with you now:

STATEMENT OF THE MOST REV. DONALD W. TRAUTMAN, BISHOP OF ERIE, PA: The Golden Dome of Notre Dame, the long revered symbol of a Catholic university, will be disgraced and dishonored on this coming May 17th, the commencement day of the university. On that day the leaders of the university are giving a platform and honor-ary degree to an individual who is a relentless advocate of unrestricted abortion: President Obama. On his fourth day in the White House he approved federal funding to perform private abortions in other countries (the overturning of the Mexico City Policy). He restored to the United Nations Population Fund monies to support abortions, while opposing federal funding for pro-life pregnancy help centers. He authorized funding to conduct human embryonic stem cell research. In the words of Mary Ann Glendon, professor of law at Harvard University who turned down the prestigious Laetare Medal from Notre Dame University, President Obama is “an uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.” May 17th will mark not just a bad decision by university officials, it will mark a day of shame and blemish for the Catholic record and reputation of Notre Dame University. Its relationship to the Catholic hierarchy and to the fundamental principles of the

Church has been fractured and will take new leadership to rebuild. Many loyal alumni, students, and faculty will continually pray the rosary in reparation at the Notre Dame Grotto during the graduation. They will give witness of what the real Notre Dame is all about. What should be a day of joyous celebration for graduates and their families will be a day of shame and dilemma as the university leadership moves away from its rich Catholic tradition. Now must begin the work of bringing new luster to the Golden Dome. Now is the time for recommitment to being once again a great Catholic university.
